Send us a textIn all these debates about sola fide, it is often easy to attack a strawman instead of discussing the heart of the matter. In this video, I read through the Sixth Session of the Council of Trent in order to unveil what we actually mean by justification, correcting potential errors in interpretation and understanding. Galileo is considered the father of modern science. His discoveries included the laws of pendulums which led to the development of the first accurate clocks. But tragically, he was tried by the Inquisition of Rome for heresy. The science deniers of the Church threatened to burn him at the stake unless he recanted his claims that he could prove that Copernicus was right: that the Earth is not the center of the universe, that we live in a heliocentric system where the earth and the other planets revolve around the sun.

How did Roman Catholic respond to the Reformation? The Council of Trent condemned Protestants, but also aimed to purify the Roman church.

Reformation is taking hold on continental Europe, espousing doctrines in direct opposition to the Roman Catholic church. Rome must respond, and does so starting with the Council of Trent. In addition, we will learn about another large figure in the early Protestant Reformation, John Calvin.--When you hear the work 'council' you think of a meeting, but this 'meeting' extended almost 20 years through the reign of three popes. The four main decisions or decrees that the council produced were- --1. A rejection of Sola Scriptura -Scripture Alone is the Authority- and a re-affirmation of the authority of Papal decree and tradition as equal with scripture- --2. A rejection of Sola Fide -Justification by Faith Alone- and a reiteration that justification is a progressive process that requires works- --3. An establishment of Transubstantiation -real physical transformation of the bread and wine during communion into the body of blood of Christ- as church doctrine.--4. Ecclesiastical reforms in the clergy.
Over the last couple of years on the Postscript, we have been walking through the history of the Church. The last few episodes on this subject, we have been discussing the Reformation. We have discussed Jan Hus, John Wycliffe, Martin Luther and the Anabaptists. Today we are sitting down with pastor and Church History instructor Greg Axe to discuss the Counter Reformation. We set the context with the setting, particularly the age of European exploration and expansion couple with two key Catholic players, Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits (1534 AD) and Pope Paul III, overseer of the Council of Trent (1545 AD). In this conversation, we discuss the ways in which the Roman Catholic Church sought to entrench its reformers against the Church as official enemies of the state by the authority of the Council of Trent, giving the Catholic Church the right to anathematize people in over 100 instances - which council stands today as one of the most foundational doctrinal documents of the Catholic Church. What was it like for a Renaissance-era composer to navigate the liturgical changes of an ecumenical council, and to have a theological outlook on Our Lady's Immaculate Conception (later vindicated as the Church's own view) that was different from that of his episcopal employer? We look at these questions, and hear about the adventurous and interesting life of lesser-known composer Juan de Esquivel in this episode with Dr. Michael O'Connor. The first years of Christianity and, later, the years of the Protestant reformation were especially formative years in the Church. Father O'Connell guides the listener through historical facts with stories, always drawing us into the mindset of the key players and of the time in which they lived. How were the very first Christians viewed by their contemporaries, and why were they persecuted? How did the Church survive the popular heresies that arose while it was still very new? In the second part of the course, we learn about the humble beginnings of Martin Luther and how his personal theological difficulty became a movement that changed Christendom, one in which a one-time defender of the Catholic faith and the papacy, Henry the VIII, would later reject the authority of the pope and have himself declared the Supreme Head of the Church in England. catholicthinkers.org https://youtu.be/QSTMtTNPLrE
