Dan van Voorhis joins Rich Ferreira today for the first time as our guest! Dan is an author, historian, professor, and speaker at 1517. He is very familiar with podcasts since he hosts the daily podcast, "The Christian History Almanac." Dan and Rich recently returned from the Reformation Tour of Germany (Sept. 11-19, 2024) and are here to share their favorite sites, stories, and faith lessons from the trip! One highlight was seeing Castle Church (All Saints' Church) in Wittenberg, where legend says Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door.Dan shares the 4 Questions of the Reformation that were asked Martin Luther, by the Apostle Paul in Galatians, and by believers from ancient to modern times. After posing the overarching question, "Why did the Reformation happen?", these 4 questions follow:"Who's in charge?""Who says?""How am I made right with God?""What next?" (or "What do I do now?")The Reformation at its best was asking all of this, and today people still are. Join us next autumn for our return trip to Germany (plus Switzerland!) to study the Reformers, see their cities of origin, and to understand how they influenced our faith today.Germany/Switzerland Signature TourSept. 6-17, 2025https://gtitours.org/trip/signature-germany-switzerland-2025 Link to the September 2024 Germany blog:https://gtitours.org/tour-journal/signature-germany-2024 Link to Reformation video:https://vimeo.com/1015725421 Dan's bio:Dan van Voorhis is an author, historian, professor, and speaker at 1517. In the early to mid 80's the Piqua, OH high school football team needed a manager. Phil Voorhis realizing that he may be a bit small and slow to be playing big time HS football in Ohio thought it would be a good opportunity to be associated with the FB team. This lead to a suggestion from a football coach that he might be interested in attending at Cramer Student Athletic Trainer Workshop at near by Miami University to learn some taping skills and a few nuggets of athletic training knowledge, from unknown to him at the time, Hall of Fame athletic trainers. His time at Miami left an impression. He decided to go there for his undergraduate studies. Working in their internship AT education program he set his sights on med school until organic chemistry derailed his plans. Deciding on charting his career path as an athletic trainer he got a call on a dugout phone while working summer league baseball that set the course of 34 year career as an ATC and all of them at Northern Illinois University. GA to Assistant AT to Head AT and finally to his current position as Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine and Athletic Training, Phil has seen it all. Is Valentine's Day a Hallmark Holiday? We sit down with Dr. Dan van Voorhis from "Christian History Almanac" and ask him about the history of St. Valentine's Day from a church history perspective. He shares with us 3 different historic people named "Valentine" in the 200s, when Christianity was illegal in Rome. He shares how the first valentine letter on the record was one of condolances, not romantic love, and how these stories were tied into the martyrdom of the early church. We talk about the facinating Georgian vs Julian calendar, and how that effects our perception of the season of Valentine's Day on the church calendar--as it used to be in the peak of spring, and how it started overlapping with fertility holidays. Throughout history, Christians used saints days to keep their calendar, to avoid using pagan gods' names in their calendar, and further down the line, Puritans didn't use either, and used only numbers in their calendar "15th day of the 10th month..." We go down a fun rabbit trail discussing the struggle of the historian to figure out which calendar each reformational character used in their letters, and calendars were often determined by Catholic or anti-Catholic loyalties.  So if you want to be historically accurate, you'd celebrate Valentine's Day on February 27th, and send out a bunch of condolance cards. :) Just kidding. It was a just for fun conversation full of fun facts and Dan always brings the encouragment from a historical perspective that there is nothing new under the sun, and that the rumors of grace are true, and everything will be ok. I've been dry-tooling more than ice climbing this winter, largely because it's been frustratingly warm in New England. Call this my adaptation strategy — but really, I feel like I'm just getting ahead of the curve since trigger alert: dry-tooling is the future of ice climbing. #provemewrong(please)Not to be all dire, dour and doom and gloom, but globally, climate change is leading to fewer days below 0°C, aka, the planet is warming. (according to an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report from 2021). Since ice forms below the freezing temp of water, it's not hard to see that the result will be fewer climbable days of ice as a result. So what's an ice climber to do?Today, we chat with Taylor Luneau, an ice climber from Vermont, former Policy Director of the American Alpine Club, and current Conservation Manager at The Wilderness Society. Taylor has spent the bulk of his adult working life in conservation efforts, protecting public land, and now, supporting climate change mitigation strategies through forest management policies.During his time at the AAC, Taylor commissioned a first-of-its-kind study evaluating ice season length for one of the premiere ice climbing destinations in the U.S. — the Mount Washington Valley in New Hampshire. You might have seem the film that came out of this, freeze//thaw, which shares the scientific findings and socioeconomic impact on guides in the area. Definitely worth watching. We talk about the study, how climbers can get involved in responding to climate change, along with mitigation and adaptation strategies in today's episode. Resources and links:If you'd like to connect with Taylor, his Instagram is @taylor.luneau, and his Wilderness Society email is tluneau@tws.org. To learn more about the Mount Washington Valley study, here is the webpage that has “freeze//thaw”, an article by Jimmy Voorhis and Micheal Wejchert, and the full study by Voorhis, McDowell, and Burakowski, et al.The impact of our national forests to mitigate climate change:“Forests in the U.S. remove the equivalent of about 12 percent of annual U.S. fossil fuel emissions or about 206 teragrams of carbon, after accounting for natural emissions, such as wildfire and decomposition. Worldwide, healthy forests absorb 1.1 billion metric tons of carbon per year, the same contained in nearly 54 million tanker trucks worth of gasoline. Biologically rich, continuous networks of public lands play an important role in absorbing climate-changing emissions, sustaining plants and animals, and helping the hardest hit communities adapt to the impacts of a changing climate." We invited church historian, Dan van Voorhis, to come and talk to us about the history of revivalism. What is a revival? Are we in a revival right now? He talks about the first Great Awakening, and the second Great Awakening, and the mindsets and theology that came out of those movements. He talks about a spectrum in our definitions of revivals, from Pentecostal to Methodist, and the historical crossover that happened during the Second Great Awakening between the Methodists and Baptists. And then we talk about ordinary means of grace, and extraordinary means of grace, in the ways the Holy Spirit works in our lives. This is part 1 of a 2 part conversation on revivalism with Dan, for the purpose of having an educated, gracious, and thoughtful approach to reports of revivals happening. In this episode, we bring on Dr. Dan van Voorhis, professor in the "History of Christianity in America" 1517 academy course, to talk to him about how our history affects our theology. We talk about migration patterns in America, as different people groups emmigrate here throughout the centuries, and how different denominations affect each other regionally. The circumstances of history often push the church to ask questions it wouldn't ask with such intensity otherwise: such as during Covid, when the church started asking the question: what is church, and why do we need it? This facinating discussion is not long enough, but fortunately, his whole course on it is free, and available on the 1517 academy page. https://1517-academy.thinkific.com/courses/christianity-in-america Dan also does a short, daily podcast on Church history, "The Christian History Almanac." https://www.1517.org/podcasts/the-christian-history-almanac The promo video for this course: "Is America a Christian Nation?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lMZZWfGIZQ&t=14s Support the work of 1517
