We cover a lot of ground in this week's episode with Fort Works Art's Lauren Childs—gallery owner, artist, mom, and constant supporter of the arts. Her gallery quickly became one of my favorite places in Fort Worth when it opened 2016, first for its unique roster of artists but eventually for its continued dedication to bringing international attention to Texas artists. In Episode 106, we talk about some of my favorite artists from previous Fort Works exhibitions (Dan Lam, Marshall Harris, Kate Simon), as well as a few of my favorite things: art activism, Art Basel, the Burning Man experience, and how we can help one another as we navigate these uncertain times. In this episode, I talk to the artist Marcelina Gonzales about challenging preconceptions of being a Hispanic female through her work. Marcelina creates meticulous pieces that combine paint and resin to recreate memories of her youth. In our conversation, she discusses how she navigated her experience from adolescence to womanhood while growing up in Brownsville, a border-town located at the southernmost tip of Texas. The Rio Grande Valley, the area where she came of age, is a unique place for its fusion of Mexican and American culture and traditions yet it is often regarded with contempt by outlets that promote its poverty, lack of education, and danger. Marcelina works to reconcile the shame triggered by the circumstances and external barriers set by her perceived identity, ability, and class. Ultimately she seeks empowerment as she works to destroy the expected social, political, economic, religious, and sexual role of a female living in today’s America.   Marcelina’s work has been exhibited repeatedly throughout Texas in galleries and exhibitions such as Freight Gallery in San Antonio, Fort Worth’s Fort Works Art competitive “40 under 40” Exhibition, the El Paso International Museum of Art, and at the 500X Gallery in Dallas, Texas. She has been included in several juried exhibitions throughout the United States including the Rosetta Hunter Gallery located in Seattle Central College and in exhibitions spaces in Los Angeles and New York City. She has also had the opportunity to travel internationally with her work to places such as Berlin, Germany, Budapest, Hungary, and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Most recently she took part in a 3 person exhibition in New York City’s Chelsea Gallery, Field Projects. Riley Holloway is a Dallas-based artist whose dynamic portraits capture the faces of the world around him. A 2015 Hunting Prize finalist, he has attended The Art Institute of Dallas, the Florence Academy of Art, and the University of Texas in Arlington. In 2013, Holloway completed a unique residency at The Fairmont in Dallas, which was accompanied by a solo exhibition in the hotel’s gallery at the completion of his time there. He has been in a number of group exhibitions and repeatedly featured in solo exhibitions at Fort Works Art in Fort Worth. In addition, he completed a prominent public art mural commission for a municipal court building in downtown Fort Worth and was recently added to the Dean Collection, a contemporary art collection owned by hip hop producer Kasseem Dean (AKA Swizz Beatz) and his wife, singer-songwriter Alicia Keys.I recently sat down with Riley at his studio in Dallas where we discussed growing up in an artistic home, studying in Florence, the impact of the right artist residency and what it’s like to have Sedrick Huckaby as your mentor.
