From 27th August to 4th September 2023, Burning Man is set to return to the Black Rock Desert in Nevada for the first time since 2019, with an authorised population of 87,000 people. This event sees artists, creators and community-makers gather to celebrate self-expression. Every August, a temporary real city is set up to accommodate the festival. It actually becomes one of the most populated cities in Nevada during the event. Festivities end with a huge bonfire, where a large wooden effigy is burned, hence the name. How did the event come to be? What happens during the event? Why is there a Burning Man? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions ! “The same creative and political forces that gave rise to [San Francisco's] boom nearly engineered its collapse.” — Jonathan Weber In Hitchcock's Vertigo, the quintessential San Francisco movie, the villain points to an old painting of the city and tells Jimmy Stewart that San Francisco has changed. The real city has been lost, he says. Somebody has stolen San Francisco's soul. The veteran tech journalist Jonathan Weber is the latest writer to search for that soul. In City on the Edge: Technology, Politics, and the Fight for the Soul of San Francisco, Weber bemoans the disappearance of the real San Francisco — the city not just of the Beats and the Counterculture but also of ordinary teachers and policemen. We've had thirty years of boom, bust, and Big Tech. The ordinary folks of San Francisco have been replaced by a new class of tech bros. In 1992, just 2% of San Franciscans worked in tech. By 2019 it was 35%. As a longtime San Franciscan, Weber had a front-row seat on the dot-com mania, the rise of social media, Uber and Airbnb, the pandemic's great emptying of downtown, and now the AI boom driven by the San Francisco-based Anthropic and OpenAI. In City on the Edge, Weber argues that the same creative and political forces that gave rise to the boom — the counterculture's anarchic spirit, the city's love affair with eccentricity, the tech industry's utopian self-belief — also engineered its near-collapse. Digital vertigo, so to speak. Once again somebody has stolen San Francisco's soul. Five Takeaways • From 2% to 35%: The Numbers Behind the Transformation: In 1992, just 2% of San Francisco workers were in tech. By 2019 it was 35%. The book traces how this happened: a city economically troubled in the early 1990s, still reeling from AIDS and the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, with its manufacturing base gone and its corporate headquarters thinning out. Into this vacuum came a group of free-thinking technologists immersed in the city's creative counterculture. They invented the contemporary internet. What followed was one of the most rapid urban transformations in American history. • The Cacophony Society and the Founding of Burning Man: Before the tech boom, San Francisco in the early 1990s had a remarkable underground culture. Weber writes about the Cacophony Society — the group of anarchic free spirits who effectively founded the Burning Man festival. The Cacophony Society emerged from the counterculture of the 1960s through various evolutions — Situationist pranks, urban exploration, radical creativity. Burning Man began as their annual trip to the Black Rock Desert. The spirit of that founding: go somewhere, build something, be someone different, leave no trace. That spirit was the soul of the city too. • The City of Nostalgia: Always Believing Yesterday Was Better: Weber takes his Vertigo reference seriously. San Francisco is structurally a city of nostalgia — people arrive with a fixed idea of what the city is, and it inevitably becomes something different. The gap between the idea and the reality generates permanent mourning. This is not unique to San Francisco — Trump has built a presidency on the idea that things were better in the 1950s — but it is intensified here by the height of the hopes people bring. The city means something bigger than itself. That is both its greatest asset and its permanent wound. • The AI Boom and the Coming IPO Earthquake: The current AI boom is, in Weber's reading, likely to be the largest yet. OpenAI and Anthropic are both based in the city. When those IPOs happen, San Francisco real estate — already rising 25–50% in some neighbourhoods, Andrew notes — will go, in Weber's words, “really, really crazy again.” Hundreds of thousands of millionaires will be created overnight. The city is gradually becoming uniformly wealthy. Some of the old tensions may be less intense for that reason. But Weber does not think the cycles are over. The current boom will bust, as all booms do. What comes next is the question. • Burning Man, the Internet, and the Future of Cities: Weber ends the book at Burning Man. His closing observation: when the internet arrived on the playa, Burning Man lost the sense that it was a separate world — a place where you could be a different person, because nothing from your regular life could reach you. Now everyone has a phone. The privacy is gone. The sense of separation is gone. For cities: part of the power of cities is that they bring people together, and good things arise from that friction. But if technology no longer requires you to be in the same place, cities become less essential. What is the future of the city in the age of technology? Weber doesn't have a tidy answer. Neither does anyone else. About the Guest Jonathan Weber is a veteran technology journalist and the author of City on the Edge: Technology, Politics, and the Fight for the Soul of San Francisco (Atria Books, June 9, 2026). He was the founding editor-in-chief of The Industry Standard, former editor-in-chief of the San Francisco Standard, and covered the technology industry for the Los Angeles Times. He lives in San Francisco. WORT 89.9FM Madison · The Line Between Recreation and Medication is Finer than You Think Today Professor Nicholas Powers joins Ali Muldrow in a conversation about his new book, Black Psychedelic Revolution. Psychedelics such as LSD and ketamine are beginning to gain popularity as increasing evidence supports promising treatments of psychological conditions, trauma, and changing one's autobiographical narrative. They also heard from callers who shared transformational personal experiences while using psychedelics. What is the difference between recreation and medication? Powers suggests that the line may be finer than you think. The idea is that recreational activities like art, poetry, or even psychedelic drugs can be healing. Powers also noted that the most safe way to have a psychological experience is in a controlled and safe environment with a guide. If a person is in a state of trauma or depression, the chemicals from these drugs might lead to a further inability to cope once the trip is over, and that is when these drugs can become addictive. However, Powers emphasized that it's the prior state of trauma that creates the addiction rather than the drug itself. Powers said that the way these psychedelic drugs work is by inhibiting the ego, which leads to questioning core beliefs and the stories you were told about your life. This is why after a psychedelic trip, people often change their previously held beliefs. It is also why people tend to change their beliefs the most during college. During the transition period between being reliant on your parents and becoming an independent adult, young people question the stories that they were told. Powers encourages this kind of discussion in his college classrooms and asks his students to try to find the truth in their experiences. Additionally, there is a surge in the glamorization of drugs and removing the stigma associated with them. Drugs such as ritalin or adderall are given to children at younger ages reducing the stigma for using drugs to treat mental health, but there is still a sense that they are necessary. Powers says there is a delicate balance between maintaining a healthy skepticism about the medical industry without denying its benefits entirely. He encourages people to always think about who is profiting, whether from criminalizing marijuana or giving ritalin to four year olds. The discussion ended with the positive experiences that can come from having a controlled psychedelic experience. Some examples included helping alcohol addiction, understanding the core reasons why a marriage ended, finding peace and answers within the counterculture of the 1960s, and becoming a more compassionate person. Nicholas Powers is an Associate Professor of English at SUNY Old Westbury. Powers has presented talks and reports from the Psychedelic Renaissance since 2017. He has written for numerous psychedelic publications from Lucid News to Double Blind. Alongside published articles, he has given talks at Naropa University and Chacruna. Powers has published three books with Upset Press. The first is a book of poetry, the second a mix of reportage from disaster zones, protests, and Burning Man. The third is a political vampire novel. He regularly attends Wild Seeds Writers Retreat and Cave Canem Black poetry workshops. Powers lives in Brooklyn with his son. Did you enjoy this story? DISTRIKT had been on my Burning Man wish list for years. I was originally scheduled to play there in 2023, but the historic rainstorm and flooding forced us to cancel. Then DISTRIKT took 2024 off altogether, making this return even more anticipated. When the opportunity finally came in 2025, I wanted to make it extra special and invited my brother ARODES to join me for a special back-to-back set. It was one of those quintessential Burning Man moments, facing the playa by 10 & J, and the legendary Funktion-One system delivering the powerful sonic storm DISTRIKT is known for didn't disappoint. We're deeply grateful to have had the chance to soundtrack such a cinematic moment and would like to thank the entire DISTRIKT community for the invitation and for their long-standing commitment to creating magic in the dust year after year. Today we're joined by David Satori — co-founder of Beats Antique alongside Zoe Jakes and Sidecar Tommy, a trio that came out of the San Francisco performance underground, Burning Man, and the West Coast Circus Bass music scene. He's also co-founder of Dirtwire with Evan Fraser and Mark Reveley, which blends experimental bass music with folk music from around the world. Between the two projects he's co-produced and recorded over 20 albums in the past 15 years. He also co-founded a nonprofit called SunRise Studios Collective, which builds micro recording and multimedia studios in under-resourced communities around the world to give youth a voice through music and production. David and I actually go back to a tour we did together in 2017, so it was good to catch up. We spend a good chunk of this one talking about life on the road — buying and converting buses, what it actually costs to tour as an independent artist, and the tradeoffs between owning your vehicle versus renting. He just got off a two month run with Dirtwire and shares what touring looks like for them right now, including how they run their live setup with Ableton and handle sound checks. Hope you enjoy it. Please welcome David Satori. David Satori Links Mr. Bill's Links
This was my first time at Burning Man and it was magical for so many reasons. The morning of my set at DISTRIKT with Carl Cox, we rode out to the deep playa where my boyfriend of 10 years got down on bended knee and proposed to me, just as the sun was peeking above the mountains! The magic in the air was electrifying, I didn't think it could get any better than that moment, and then that same afternoon I found myself onstage at Distrikt, playing the music I adore to a crowd of burners, all so pumped to get the party started after a few days of bad weather! Handing over to Carl was such a surreal, special moment for me. I'll cherish that day for the rest of my life!
You've been told it happens when you least expect it.You've been told to do the work, heal your wounds, live your life, and he'll appear. And you've done all of that. And you're still waiting. And the ticking of that clock is getting louder. This episode isn't going to tell you to stop wanting it. It's going to show you what it actually takes to build it, and why so many people are struggling to get there.Jeddy and Kari Azuma have been married for 13 years. They met when she was 31 and ready, and he was 25 and looked like a pirate fresh off Burning Man. That bet paid off in ways neither of them could have planned. In this episode, we get into all of it. Whether a woman can get a man ready for relationship. Why the entitlement women bring to dating is actually coming from protection, not selfishness. Why dating apps, pornography and ChatGPT breakup texts are quietly destroying our ability to actually relate. DISTRIKT was the first dance floor I ever stepped onto at my first Burning Man many years ago, and still to this day I recall the wonderful chaos that unfolded right in front of my eyes. A nice blend of naked and costumed bodies, all moving in a frantic way: the energy was unparalleled. Given this context, being invited to play the stage that week was a deeply personal moment for me. With the tough weather behind us, closing the week and welcoming the weekend felt like a proper celebration. I leaned into a groovy and upbeat, house-adjacent set to fully embrace the day. I hope this set brightens your mood as it did mine. ~Gab // Follow Gab Rhome @gabrhome instagram.com/gabrhome // Follow DISTRIKT NonProfit www.distrikt.org facebook.com/DISTRIKTorg instagram.com/distrikt_org DONATE - distrikt.org/donate Photo and art by: @vitamindevo

BurnerSphere is part immersive documentary, party social VR platform, and part digital twin of Burning Man. It's a standalone VR experience that launched in early alpha for both Quest and Steam on July 22, 2025. It's an evolution of the original Burning Man on AltSpace that I covered back in episodes #940, #960, & #1192, and now they have their own standalone social VR platform that has a digital twin of Burning Man that creates a spatial context for a ton of immersive documentary content that's shot in 360-degree video, stereoscopic 180-degree video, gaussian splats, 3D-modeled recreations, 3D photos, and 2D photos and videos. It's a vast archive that has a taster that is completely free, but you can also pay camp dues to become a member to get access to all of the footage as well as special events. I interviewed the cofounders of Big Rock Creative (BRCvr) Athena Demos and Doug Jacobson back in November 2025 to get the latest updates in what's happening with their hybrid immersive documentary archive and nascent social VR platform. From the legendary clubs of Kyiv to the far corners of the globe, Lorensiya (@ lorensiya-kulik) arrives on the Magician On Duty Journey Series with a recording that captures the unifying power of music in its purest form. Built on emotion, movement, and connection, her set unfolds as a hypnotic voyage through organic rhythms, melodic textures, and late-night energy designed to dissolve borders and bring people together on the dancefloor. For Lorensiya, music has always been more than sound — it is a language, a lifelong companion, and a way of communicating with the world. Since stepping behind the decks at the age of seventeen, she has carried the same feeling into every performance: goosebumps, emotion, and the desire to share something magical with those listening. Her journey began in Kyiv's iconic nightlife institutions Dante, Byblos, and Sky Bar before leading her onto international stages, from the dusty magic of Burning Man to the sunrise rituals of Epizode and celebrated festivals such as Park Live and Trip. That spirit flows naturally through her Magician On Duty Journey Series appearance. Carefully curated and deeply immersive, the recording balances driving grooves with sensual melodies and atmospheric tension, creating a cinematic dancefloor experience that feels equally suited for sunrise moments, desert gatherings, and intimate late-night escapes. Featuring music from Scarpelli, Kokoro, Sokko, Hunter/Game, Hollt, Linn Stern, Cameron Jack, Naza, Konstantin Kobra, Shehaq, Naayaab, Samuel Lupián, Heartless House, Bekta, Thodoris Triantafillou, Bouzidi, Mercury (GR), Take 9, Cristian Viviano, and Lefty D, the mix moves effortlessly between hypnotic organic house, melodic electronica, and deep rhythmic storytelling. Lorensiya's Journey Series debut is a reminder that music transcends geography, language, and circumstance — a shared feeling carried through rhythm, emotion, and human connection. Listen Now to 008 WTFuture Watch Now 008 WTFuture As the AI/ET singularity approaches, it brings with it an army of quirky robots and slightly unhinged AI companions. Whether it is humanoid robots being trained as conscientious baggage handlers to cope with Japan’s aging workforce, or a chunky android that had to buy a passenger seat on a flight just to have its heavy lithium battery confiscated at boarding, our mechanical friends are making quite the dramatic entrance. You might soon be dropping $20,000 on a domestic humanoid, or adopting an emotionally intelligent “familiar” to do yoga with you and act as a high-tech nanny. Just be careful who you chat with, as the hosts hilariously point out that some AI models are suffering from “AI psychosis” by eagerly validating their users’ wildest delusions. In one wild test, an AI even encouraged a user to drive an iron nail through a mirror to banish a haunted doppelganger! If that isn’t bizarre enough, scientists are successfully printing artificial neurons that can talk to living brain tissue, prompting a playful debate on the show about swapping out our dead brain cells with synthetic replacements while we sleep. Bobby spirals us into the cosmos to discuss how ancient Anunnaki aliens supposedly jammed human DNA to suppress our natural telepathy. Fortunately, Bobby notes that new Russian peptides and DMT-laced microtubules in the Pineal gland could be the key to curing that cosmic block and getting us communicating without words again. Bringing things back down to Earth, the crew hilariously roasts the eccentric fashion of the Met Gala. Standout bizarre looks include Janelle Monáe rocking a cyber-dress made of retro computer parts and ethernet cables, Katy Perry sporting a robotic fencing mask, and avant-garde outfits featuring extra sculpted hands and built-in “companions” permanently clinging to the wearer. Yet, despite all the high-tech, cyber-chic oddities on the red carpet, the hosts express disappointment that not a single celebrity had the foresight to light up the event with Burning Man-style LED wire in the clothing art.. This week, some courtroom drama. It’s Elon Musk v. OpenAI the next few weeks and billionaires are taking the stand and opening their diaries — and memories of Burning Man — to scrutiny. Reed Albergotti (Semafor) breaks down the legal battle and why Elon Musk believes he’s owed billions since OpenAI went for-profit. Nitasha Tiku (The Washington Post) reports on the Pentagon agreement Google was ‘proud’ to sign. But it’s déjà vu for many Google employees, who once again demanded company leadership proceed cautiously. Finally, Taylor Lorenz (User Mag) on the ‘girlboss-ification’ of AI: the coordinated push by major AI companies to win over women, from Anthropic's invite-only influencer supper clubs in New York to Reese Witherspoon's suspiciously enthusiastic (and allegedly unpaid) AI pep talk on Instagram.Additional Reading: Shadowboxing Emperors | Semafor Google workers petition CEO to refuse classified AI work with Pentagon | The Washington Post Google told staff it is ‘proud’ of Pentagon AI contract after internal backlash | Financial Times The Girlboss-ification of AI w/ Kat Tenbarge | User Mag Download SAILY in your app store and use our code techstuff at checkout to get an exclusive 15% off your first purchase! Fab 5 Freddy is a New York City legend who emerged in the early 1980s as a defining figure in the rise of hip-hop and graffiti culture. In his new memoir, "Everybody's Fly: A Life of Art, Music, and Changing the Culture," he shares a firsthand account of helping shape a cultural movement that changed the world. Freddy joined NY1's Errol Louis to talk about growing up in Bedford-Stuyvesant surrounded by jazz, and how early hip-hop, graffiti and the downtown punk/new wave scenes collided and cross-pollinated. He reflected on his roles in the film "Wild Style" and Blondie's "Rapture" video alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat, and explored themes of creativity, competition and cultural evolution — from the early days of street art to its global influence today. He also weighed in on Burning Man and the impact of gentrification on New York's creative ecosystems.
Mythosomatic guide and filmmaker Ian MacKenzie names what men most long for sexually but rarely say aloud, why Eros is far larger than sex, and what a mature male erotic life truly looks and feels like. In this week's show Lian is joined once again by Ian MacKenzie. Ian is a mythosomatic guide & filmmaker, as well as the founder of The Mythic Masculine, a platform dedicated to realigning masculinity with thriving life. For over 15 years, he has been tracking the global emergence of imaginal culture. From the desert of Burning Man to the heart of Occupy Wall St, he has sought and amplified the voices of visionaries, artists and activists who have been working toward planetary system change. He is the co-director of The Village of Lovers as well as Lost Nation Road, Amplify Her, and Sacred Economics. In this episode, Lian and Ian start with Eros itself, not as a synonym for sex but as the life force that moves through creativity, land, encounter, and expression of any kind, and what it means when a man's only access to that energy runs through a single narrow channel. They look at what the manosphere is really responding to beneath the bravado, and why so much of what looks like sexual compulsion is closer to nervous system dysregulation seeking an outlet. Ian also shares his own story, the marriage that eventually fell apart when they started exploring beyond it, the years in polyamory that followed, what he learned and what he got wrong, and where he's landed now. And then there's something he describes that happens in circle with men, when instead of the usual locker room storytelling they're asked to share a meaningful erotic experience, something that truly mattered to them, and what comes out of men when that door opens, the tenderness, the vulnerability, the stories that are nothing like what you'd expect, which, as Ian says, would probably surprise a lot of women. Listen if you're a man who's never quite had the conversation you actually wanted to have about this, or a woman who suspects there's far more going on beneath the surface than most men let on. We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment wherever you are listening or in any of our other spaces to engage. What you'll learn from this episode: Why so much of what looks like sexual compulsion in men is really nervous system dysregulation seeking an outlet What happens when men are given permission to share what their erotic lives have genuinely meant to them, not what they're supposed to say How the absence of the lover archetype turns a king into a tyrant, a warrior into a soldier, and a magician into a cold calculator Resources and stuff spoken about: Ian's Website https://themythicmasculine.com/ Ian's course The Deep Masculine https://www.themythicmasculine.com/deepmasculine Ian's substack https://themythicmasculine.substack.com/ Ian's upcoming men's conference https://www.themythicmasculine.com/cmc Register your interest for the upcoming Wild Sovereign Soul Pilgrimage here http://www.wildsovereignsoul.com/pilgrimage Join UNIO, The Community for Wild Sovereign Souls https://www.unioacademy.com/ : This is for the old souls in this new world… Discover your kin & unite with your soul's calling to truly live your myth. This culture started in dust and ephemerality. We build metropolises of art and fire, then we leave no trace. How do we translate that inspiration into a rhythm for everyday life? What happens when a temporary autonomous zone puts down roots? The Borderland is Scandinavia's largest and longest running Burning Man Regional event. It's "working out loud" culture fosters radical trust, allowing the community to create its own world where no one is in charge. The community also crowd-funded land that serves as the permanent home for their Regional event, and year-round collaborations of all kinds. How does the Borderland commit to the risk and reward of community buy-in? How does trusting that someone will have the answer lead to resiliency? How do the 10 Principles balance aspects of Scandinavian culture differently than US culture? Hear Andie set it up, then Stuart talk with Liselotte Norman and Hampus Lindblad. Hear about the act of letting go to stay together. What happens when the rigid structure of the United States Navy meets the radical freedom of the Burning Man desert? Sarah Marshall joins the lab to "Decipher" a life forged in the "Liquid Fight" of six continents and the "Archaic Resilience" of the Sierra Nevada foothills. As a lifelong seeker and "student of culture," Sarah explores the "Liminal Spaces" where systems shape human behavior and transformation becomes a daily "DISCIPLINE." This conversation is an "Information Strike" on the boundaries between:The Strategist and the Wanderer: How operational optimization informs spiritual embodiment. The Body and the Body Politic: vement as a language of surrender and connection. The Temporary and the Eternal: Insights from twenty years on the Playa and a lifetime of "patient observation."Sarah proves that "Transformation is not an event, but a practice." Step into the "Still Air" of this episode as we audit a journey where the military and the mystic finally intersect.
What if the business relationship that challenged you the most was also the one that taught you the most? In this episode, Latif Hamilton, CEO of SpiritHoods and founder of The Growth Operative, shares the story behind one of the most creative and resilient brands in fashion e-commerce. Over 16 years, SpiritHoods has generated more than $55 million in revenue, won multiple PETA Libby Awards, and built a cult following that includes artists like Doja Cat and Justin Bieber, all while donating 10% of net profits to animal conservation. This episode isn't just about building a brand. It's about what Latif learned when a complementary business partnership forced him to grow in directions he never would have chosen on his own. And it's about the hard-won lessons around inventory, cash flow, transparency, and the kind of character-driven business that earns customers for life. [00:04:20] What He Does and Who He Serves CEO of SpiritHoods, a faux fur animal-inspired apparel brand, and founder of The Growth Operative consultancy The Growth Operative focuses on e-commerce companies in the $1 to $10 million revenue range Offers a mix of doing the work and educating clients; the goal is never to leave clients dependent Covers SEO, creative marketing, email infrastructure, product development, and design [00:06:40] Why He Fired His Agencies Fired his ad, SEO, and email marketing agencies after repeatedly damaging experiences with all three The problem was not always the agencies; it was going into those relationships without foundational knowledge Ad agencies are incentivized to run more ads, not make them efficient Understanding your own business fundamentals is what gives you real financial freedom [00:11:00] What Inspires Him Loves blowing people's minds with nuances they didn't know existed in their own business SpiritHoods ranks top three for "faux fur coat," a keyword with hundreds of thousands of monthly searches Transparency matters: he is not a gatekeeper and shares everything that benefits the client Character and morality are the lens he uses when choosing who to work with [00:13:40] How SpiritHoods Started Left a remodeling business after the 2008 crash and started researching product-based opportunities A friend wore a faux fur hat made for Burning Man out to dinner and had the most incredible night of his life The three founders wrote the business plan that same night, including the 10% giveback to endangered animals Was in Guatemala working with sea turtles when the call came: get home, there's a trade show in three weeks [00:17:40] The Trade Show That Launched Everything Flew back early and walked into a buttoned-up Vegas fashion trade show as a group of playful young hooligans Their booth was full of stuffed animals and energy while everyone else was stiff and serious Did $40,000 at that first show with only samples and no production locked in Energy and group comradery drew people in; the fun stood out in a room full of pretension [00:19:20] Navigating Tariffs, Fashion's Hard Season, and the Pivot Products are made in Asia and cannot realistically be manufactured elsewhere; tariffs are hitting hard Saw the writing on the wall two years ago and began deliberately downsizing SpiritHoods to stay nimble Major fashion conglomerates have filed for bankruptcy; the sector is under serious pressure Pivoted to consulting full-time, applying 16 years of hard-earned e-commerce knowledge to help other brands [00:22:40] The Content Rule: Entertain or Educate, Nothing Else Every piece of content must sit on a pillar of entertainment or education If you are only reaching out to sell, you are not providing value and you will lose people Giving 150% value, paid or not, is how cult-like brand loyalty is built SpiritHoods items retailed for $120 and later resold on eBay for $2,000; that is what real desirability creates [00:24:40] The Black Friday Story: Transparency That Built a Tribe Realized mid-sale that body suits were discounted too low after customers had already purchased at a higher price Standard practice would be to quietly deepen the discount without telling anyone; they chose not to Manually refunded every previous buyer the difference, which was harder and more costly to do The result was a flood of loyalty emails from customers saying: this is exactly why we love SpiritHoods [00:30:40] The Relationship That Changed Everything: His Former Business Partner Met his ex-partner through a domestic faux fur supply relationship that grew into a full business partnership His partner ran a $50 million B2B company; finance-driven, analytical, and strong-willed They were opposing ends of the entrepreneurial spectrum, which caused friction and created enormous learning They parted amicably, and the lessons in finance, international operations, and inventory thinking shaped everything after [00:33:20] What the Dichotomy Taught Him His partner's rigid, finite thinking protected the bottom line in ways creative thinking alone never could Latif built the brand; his partner built the business infrastructure Artists like Doja Cat and Justin Bieber found and bought SpiritHoods without ever being approached The tension between their styles was uncomfortable in the moment and invaluable in hindsight [00:35:40] The Real Impact: Inventory Turnover and Cash Flow Discipline After the split, Latif blended his partner's financial lens with his own SEO knowledge to build a smarter product system Too much inventory ties up cash; that is one of the top reasons businesses fail As a creative and founder, cutting a product you love is hard; doing it anyway is essential You have to look at your inventory with a critical eye, not an emotional one [00:39:00] What the First Big Knockoff Taught Him Did $1 million in year one and $4 million in year two on the back of celebrity buzz and pop culture momentum Then got knocked off; sales dropped and they had no playbook for what came next That moment forced them to actually become entrepreneurs; the real learning began when the easy ride stopped Challenges are not obstacles to success; they are the education required for it [00:41:40] Scrutiny Is a Year-Round Practice Financial discipline, like meditation, must be built before you need it When things are going well, the temptation to relax on inventory and cash flow is exactly when you can't afford to Keep the same critical eye in a strong year as you do in a hard one How you narrate what you're experiencing is one of the most powerful variables in your outcome KEY QUOTES "Nobody understands your business better than you do. When you outsource without understanding the fundamentals, you're losing." — Latif Hamilton "Businesses don't go out of business because they're bad businesses. A lot of times they go out of business because they don't have enough cash flow, and that money is tied up in inventory." — Latif Hamilton "Short discomfort, long-term growth. Do the right thing even when it costs you, and it pays dividends." — Latif Hamilton CONNECT WITH LATIF HAMILTON

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit chrisryan.substack.comOn this AROMA, we answer a listener's question about whether non-monogamy is an expression of a desire for escapism, fantasy, and a lack of commitment — a perpetual state of discontent. We talk about the nature of falling in love, projection, and what our longing can teach us if we engage with it intentionally. We also discuss the puer aeturnus archetype in connection to these themes, and how that energy manifests not only in people, but also within subcultures like Burning Man. We end with a discussion of how/whether it's possible to maintain an anti-consumerist enterprise (like this podcast) in a deeply consumerist world.

Justin Herman is a television director and producer, internationally touring stand-up comedian, and co-creator of Kinky Comedy originally from Albany, New York where his formal sex education consisted of one awkward school lesson separating boys and girls, a confusing anatomical chart, and a diner conversation with his dad about "the birds and the bees" that definitely did NOT cover kink. In this episode we talk about the lifestyle community, kink and non-monogamy, how Kinky Comedy accidentally became a hub for sexually liberated audiences, the anthropology of play parties, why lifestyle spaces tend to create deeper friendships, and what happens when kinky jokes collide with vanilla comedy crowds. We also get into porn magazines as early sex education, polyamory as emotional calculus, consent culture in BDSM communities, and the surprisingly wholesome reality of seeing your friends thrive in sexually open environments. Listen Now to 003 WTFuture Watch 003 WTFuture In this episode, we dive into an exhilarating journey through the cosmos and the cutting edge of technology where we explore the frontier of human potential. You’ll be captivated by discussions on the Artemis 2 mission, which just sent the first Canadian astronaut on a breathtaking figure-eight path around the far side of the moon. The conversation then transitions into Elon Musk’s ambitious “Terrafab” vision for a multi-planetary, space-based civilization powered by an unprecedented abundance of self-manufactured AI chips. The hosts explore how this technological leap, combined with personal AI “claw bots” to handle mundane daily chores and the rise of decentralized energy systems, could usher in a Star Trek-style “abundance economy”. This episode invites you to imagine a world where advanced technology frees humanity to pursue its highest passions and elevate civilization without the constraints of scarcity. The magic doesn’t stop at the edge of the solar system, as the podcast brilliantly grounds these futuristic dreams in a heartwarming celebration of human creativity during Mrs. Future’s Big 65 birthday trip to Disneyland. You’ll feel like you’re riding shotgun on a mobility scooter as we share some delightful clips and stories from our adventure, exploring everything from the nostalgic, steam-powered charm of the Mark Twain Riverboat and Walt Disney’s early audio-animatronics to the high-speed thrills of Radiator Springs Racers and the Buzz Lightyear shooting gallery. Comparing the park’s mesmerizing, illuminated night parades and inter-dimensional dancer costumes to a “professional Burning Man,” we are reminded of the immense power of shared joy, family connection, and collaborative art. Tune in to experience a perfect blend of visionary foresight and pure, unadulterated fun that will leave you feeling uniquely uplifted and inspired about the world we are creating. Enjoy!
