What happens when your “journey of self-discovery” includes Burning Man debauchery, spontaneous decisions to move to other countries and the ingestion of substances you probably should've Googled first? We asked the best source on the topic—Carly Schwartz, a former top editor at The Huffington Post and Editor-in-Chief of the San Francisco Examiner all about it when discussing her upcoming recovery memoir, I'll Try Anything Twice: Misadventures of a Self-Medicated Life.To call Try Anything Twice just a recovery memoir doesn't do justice to just how poignant, tragic and inspiring it is. It's a sharp and painfully honest look at dealing with depression and addiction, not to mention chasing meaning in all the wrong places—before finally finding real recovery. We get into adult identity crises, denial that deserves an award, suicidal depression and what it actually takes to rebuild a life you almost lost. Also, we talk a lot about how we're all obsessed with each other.Find out more about Carly on carly.ink, on Instagram, and on LinkedIn. And book a writing and storytelling workshop with Carly at Mindwriters. Finally, check out all things Recovery Rocks, Lisa and Anna. Lisa Smith is the author of the award-winning memoir Girl Walks Out of a Bar. Anna David is the author of the novel Party Girl, as well as multiple nonfiction books. Together, they bring the honesty of lived experience to conversations about addiction, sobriety and the messy, meaningful truths at the heart of recovery.

AgendaMark Zuckerberg faces jury in landmark trial over alleged youth harm linked to social mediaThe lawsuit, K.G.M. v. Meta Platforms, Inc., et al., was filed by a 20-year-old California woman identified by her initials. She alleges that Meta and other tech companies deliberately engineered their platforms to hook young users, contributing to her depression and suicidal thoughts, and seeks to hold them accountable.Regarding Instagram's enforcement efforts, plaintiffs asked whether Meta removed all 4 million under-13 users the company had identified on the platform in 2018. Zuckerberg responded that while the company did not remove all of them, it had implemented tools to detect and address underage accounts and was working to improve those systems.According to reports, Zuckerberg has not directly answered the central question of the case: whether Instagram is addictive. The plaintiff's attorney, Mark Lanier, asked if people tend to use something more if it's addictive. “I'm not sure what to say to that,” Zuckerberg said. “I don't think that applies here.”He said he believes in the “basic assumption” that “if something is valuable, people will use it more because it's useful to them.”When he was asked about his compensation, Zuckerberg said he has pledged to give “almost all” of his money to charity, focusing on scientific research. Lanier asked him how much money he has pledged to victims impacted by social media, to which Zuckerberg replied, “I disagree with the characterization of your question.”Zuckerberg's courthouse entourage showed up in Meta Ray-BansMeta Adding Facial Recognition to Its Smart Glasses That Identifies People in Real Time, Hoping the Public Is Too Distracted by Political Turmoil to Care MMApple sued by West Virginia for alleged failure to stop child sexual abuse material on iCloud, iOS devicesSpaceX said to weigh dual-class IPO shares to empower MuskMacron Blasts Social Media's Free Speech Defense as ‘Bullshit'The stupid (ESG edition)Goldman Sachs to Drop D.E.I. Criteria for Board Members MMThe move would be the Wall Street firm's latest retreat from diversity mandates that its chief executive, David Solomon, had once made a priority. The decision is a result of a deal that Goldman struck with the National Legal and Policy Center, a conservative nonprofit group that has been pressuring numerous companies to drop diversity, equity and inclusion mandates, the people said.As part of its agreement with Goldman, the National Legal and Policy Center, which has a small investment in the bank, withdrew a shareholder proposal demanding that diversity criteria for the board be dropped. In March 2019, Mr. Solomon, his top deputy John Waldron and the firm's chief financial officer at the time, Stephen M. Scherr, declared diversity and inclusion “a top priority.”“When we unite around a common goal, we make progress together,” the men wrote in an email to the staff. They said they would “improve each year” toward goals that included a new recruiting class comprising “50 percent women, 11 percent Black professionals and 14 percent Hispanic/Latino professionals in the Americas, and 9 percent Black professionals in the U.K.”The next year, Mr. Solomon said Goldman would no longer take a company public in the United States or Europe unless it had at least one “diverse” board member. By 2021, a company would need at least two diverse board members in order for Goldman to agree to work on its initial public offering.Inspire Investing CEO: Nike's DEI Is A Legal Liability, Shareholders Coming For AnswersNike's DEI fight is no longer just a social media "culture war" argument. The defining shift was who got the job. Among incoming CEOs, 84% were serving in their first enterprise CEO role, reversing a multi-year tilt toward leaders with prior public-company experience. As recently as 2024, more than one in five new CEOs had already led a public company. That share fell sharply in 2025. Of the 140 first-time CEOs appointed, 116 had no prior enterprise CEO experience. Two-thirds had never served on a public company board, meaning many are stepping into the role without prior exposure to shareholder oversight or public company governance.CEO hopefuls have a new rival for the top job: their own board directorsAppointing board directors as CEOs was once a “break glass in case of emergency” strategy reserved for scandal, illness, or sudden resignation. While it remains a minority path compared with traditional internal promotions, it is no longer an anomaly.New data from Spencer Stuart highlights the shift. Of the 168 new S&P 1500 chief executives appointed in 2025, the highest annual total since 2010, 19 were drawn from their own company boards, the most since 2020. Spencer Stuart classifies directors as outsiders because they lack day-to-day operating responsibility. That is important to me. Good stewardship includes ensuring a proper transition at Hyatt. Following discussions with my fellow Board members, I have decided, after serving as Executive Chairman since 2004, and with the company in a strong position, that now is the right time for me to retire from Hyatt. Good stewardship also means protecting Hyatt, particularly in the context of my association with Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, which I deeply regret. Based on the released Department of Justice files, here is a rundown of the connection between Jeffrey Epstein and Kimbal MuskThe Engineered RelationshipIn September 2012, around the time of Kimbal Musk's 40th birthday, Jeffrey Epstein and his associate Boris Nikolic actively orchestrated a meeting between Kimbal and an unnamed woman in Epstein's circle. Emails show Nikolic telling Epstein to "prepare [the woman]" for the meeting and suggesting Kimbal might want to "ditch his ex" to be with her.Following a lunch at Epstein's Manhattan penthouse in October 2012, Kimbal emailed both men to express his gratitude: "Jeffrey and Boris, many thanks for connecting me with [the woman]. I believe you both played a role. :)". Nikolic replied with a warning for Kimbal to "be nice" to her, as Epstein "goes crazy when someone mistreats his girls/friends".Depth of InvolvementThe relationship lasted approximately six months, during which Epstein remained a significant behind-the-scenes presence:• Backchannel Communication: The woman frequently forwarded Kimbal's personal messages to Epstein and sought his advice on how to handle the relationship.• Travel Planning: Epstein suggested romantic destinations like Morocco and kept a detailed itinerary of the couple's travels from October through January.• Advice on "Dating": When Kimbal attempted to scale back the relationship to "just dating" in April 2013, the woman consulted Epstein. Epstein responded, "good news now i have you back again, full time," and invited her to his ranch.Attempts to Reach Elon MuskSources suggest Epstein viewed Kimbal as a "means of gaining connection to the Musk family," specifically his older brother, Elon. In late 2012, Epstein and Elon Musk exchanged direct emails regarding a potential visit to Epstein's private island. Elon asked, "What day/night will be the wildest party on your island?". While the trip reportedly did not happen due to logistics, the emails indicate a period where Epstein actively "courted" both brothers.Public Denials vs. Documented EvidenceIn 2026, Kimbal Musk posted a statement on X claiming he only met Epstein once in a New York office during the day and denied that Epstein introduced him to the woman. However, the sources note that Kimbal appears in the Epstein files more than 300 times. The emails depict a "far friendlier and more intricate relationship" than Kimbal has publicly acknowledged, including social jokes about coordinating Halloween costumes and invitations to SpaceX launches.Consequences and Public ReactionThe exposure has led to significant public backlash. Kimbal Musk recently left the board of the Burning Man festival following an open letter from the community calling for a review of his position. While the documents do not accuse the Musk brothers of illegal wrongdoing, they have caused significant "embarrassment and public disgust" by revealing their proximity to Epstein's social and sexual network

"The black market exists only because we decided that this form of trade should be illegal." — Scott EdenIn October 2019, tech executive Tushar Atre was abducted from his oceanfront home in Santa Cruz and found murdered on his own property in the redwoods — shot execution-style, hands bound. He had spent barely three years in the cannabis business. Scott Eden's new book traces how a charismatic Silicon Valley entrepreneur, seeking to "disrupt" the newly legal weed industry, found himself entangled with an array of colorful and dangerous characters — hippie do-gooders, black-market operators, and stone-cold killers. We discuss the permeable divide between legal and illegal cannabis, why the industry has been an economic disaster for most founders, and whether America's half-pregnant approach to legalization created the conditions for Tushar's death. A California story about ambition, love, and the darker edges of the American dream.About the GuestScott Eden is an award-winning investigative journalist whose work has appeared in ESPN The Magazine, GQ, Wired, Inc., and The Atavist. What if community is currency and you can never truly be broke? In this episode, Eric Farewell shares how he helps founders grow their businesses while staying grounded in purpose, presence, and resilience. Eric is an entrepreneur, author, and somatic business coach who has built industry-shaping brands like Aviator Paramotor and National STOL. He's a devoted husband and father of three whose journey through loss, injury, and burnout led him to redefine what success truly means. Eric retired at 35 (four years ago) after 26 years of building businesses since age 13. In his book Farewell to Normal and through his coaching with the Royals Mastermind, Eric helps founders cut their efforts by at least 50% while doubling revenue. His work week is usually about 90 minutes, allowing him to be deeply present with his family and use the wisdom of his experience instead of the abilities of his brain. Eric moved halfway across the country to be closer to his community in Texas, specifically the Front Row Dads mastermind. He's on the board of Rising Man, which specializes in Native American style rites of passage for men and boys. Eric reveals the relationships that transformed him: his wife, who for 16 years of marriage has reminded him he's a good man and makes good decisions, keeping him from the brink more times than he can count when their marriage was in crisis before they found therapy and somatic work; his first mentor Alex Ozzi, whom he met at an internet marketing conference at age 13 and followed puppy dog style, moving to California and living in his garage from ages 13 to 21, learning that having a mentor who's where you want to go is absolutely imperative; and his Front Row Dads community in Texas (especially Jason Bro who challenges him more than anyone and gives him more love from another man than he's ever received), teaching him that community is currency and you need mentors, coaches you pay way too much for, and community that builds you up and holds you accountable when you fail. Biggest bridges are suspension bridges, need support" Each of us in different places in lives, can offer different levels of support In mastermind, do ton of testing (Gene Keys, Human Design, Enneagram, Kolby, Working Genius) [00:25:00] Partnering People's Genius If someone is high quick start and another is high fact finder, partner them Quick start can temper fact finder, fact finder can challenge quick start Same thing exists in relationships All you have to do is ask for support because rising tide lifts all ships [00:26:00] Michael Dash Asked Where He Could Help Michael Dash asked where he could help Eric said he loves being on podcasts if Michael has any friends That was an invitation Michael offered Not natural for Eric, he'd rather give support (then he's in control, can't be turned down) [00:27:00] Jesse Elder's Lesson on Giving Jesse pointed out: when you give to someone who appreciates it, amazing feeling But by not allowing others to give to you, you're depriving them of same experience It's stealing from them Can't have one-sided relationship, there must be reciprocity [00:30:00] The 65-Foot Boat Experience Client Michael concerned about how he'd contribute to Kevin's event Two days later called back with idea: offer 65-foot boat for Seattle water experience Could have been time when Kevin said "you don't need to do that" Would have been worst thing for Michael who put two days of thought into it [00:32:20] The Truth of the Last Year Wrote second book, realized first 10 chapters sounded like hero's journey Wrote afterward about reality: all the hardships of last year These things are still hard, difference is capacity to be present with them Learning that level of intimacy changes every relationship [00:33:00] Most Masculine Thing You Can Do Learning to ask in way that's not demeaning of masculinity or polarity Most masculine thing: truly open visor and show what's inside Show your fear, show your pain, be with someone and let them see They can hold it [00:34:00] The Royals Mastermind Group for men and women who want to step into their king or queen energy Not overwhelmed, not living in fear or anxiety Deeply present with all that is End goal: businesses that work to support us, build legacies that matter [00:35:00] The Deeper Relationship There may be deeper relationship you've overlooked: relationship with yourself While outside relationships deeply important, they help us see reflections of ourselves Relationship we carry for who we are, for honoring our challenges is most difficult There's deeper layer of connection to self KEY QUOTES "Community is currency. So many people fear going broke, not having enough, that they will fail. The problem is we have this fear based on this tangible idea. The universe is finite. And it's not. The universe is infinite. When you have community, you can't ever truly be broke." - Eric Farewell (quoting Preston Smiles and Garin Jones) "You're not asking for help. The biggest bridges in the world are suspension bridges. They need support from others, and each of us are in different places in our lives and can offer different levels of support." - Garin Jones (shared by Eric Farewell) "If you are not allowing others to pour into you the way you pour into them, it's a one-sided relationship. There is no reciprocity, and that's the deepest part of a relationship." - Eric Farewell CONNECT WITH ERIC FAREWELL

I sat down with Sarah Marshall, author of Playa Dust in My Soul, former Silicon Valley operative, and longtime Burning Man attendee, to talk about turning an uncategorisable real-world experience into a novel that feels like a fully realised world. We unpack what Burning Man actually is (Black Rock Desert, Nevada, dust storms and all), why Sarah says ten people will give ten different versions of the same event, and how the festival's principles function like world rules. Two big ones: gifting and participation. We also dig into Sarah's craft choices, including a smart structural move: seven perspectives, each arriving at different stages as the city builds from empty desert to a thriving temporary metropolis. The result is worldbuilding-by-experience, not encyclopaedia-by-info-dump.Under the spectacle, the real theme is human: belonging, identity, and what happens when a place forces you to confront the stories you tell about yourself.Discussion here: https://richardsonsrubicon.com/community/season-5-speculative-fiction-where-worlds-meet/writing-a-real-place-like-a-speculative-world-rules-constraints-and-point-of-view/Episode page: https://richardsonsrubicon.com/sarah-marshall-playa-dust-in-my-soul-worldbuilding-burning-man/Sarah's site: https://www.playadustinmysoul.com/

Chaz and AJ ended the week with yet another, impossibly creepy doll for children. Bad Idea Island focuses on the "repeating" Tarzan toy that was almost immediately pulled from shelves. (0:00) WFSB's Scot Haney was on the phone with Chaz and AJ this morning, and started the call singing his new favorite song by Raye. Plus, Jennifer called in to talk about the dinner plans they have for next weekend. (7:58) Brian Stroehlien was on the phone with Chaz and AJ to talk about his "career" as a nude male model for artists to sketch. Brian admitted this all began at Burning Man, and has since posed nude for hundreds, if not thousands of sketches. (28:07) Photo courtesy: Brian Stroehlein

Spit-take inducing.Mark Day's videos serve as a digital gateway for many thousands of Burners, capturing that blurry edge where the default world ends and the playa begins. Composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and electronic artist recording and performing under the artist name Tone Ranger. Last month he released a full-length handcrafted fantasy film paired with his most expansive and immersive album to date. The 14-song album had come out last August and he also released two singles in 2025. Since releasing his debut in 2018, he has not only performed at Burning Man, but – beyond his solo work – has scored for film and produces across genres ranging from indie folk to RandB. For his own artist project, he has put up big streaming numbers, with approximately 24 thousand monthly listeners on Spotify, where he has over four million streams on his top five songs alone. He also talks about his studio, plus getting a couple songs licensed for a film that's coming out this year.
AI, power trips, and what comes after late stage capitalism. Comedian Reggie Watts joins us to unpack how billionaires are trying to control the systems they built, why government is not a business, and how community and joy can outlast fear and shock tactics. We also debate psychedelics and ketamine, including the difference between sacred practice and shortcut culture, and how altered states can shape creativity, improv, and consciousness. Along the way they hit simulation theory, Star Trek's utopian future, Brandon Sanderson fantasy, Burning Man stories, and why Reggie believes kindness is a form of intelligence. SPONSORS!
Angel Collinson kicks off season 10 of the podcast and it's a good one. When Angel was last on the show, she was coming off a "Line of the Year" season and was on the top of the ski world. What I, and a lot of people didn't realize, was that Angel wasn't as passionate about skiing as the world thought she was. Eventually burnout got the best of her and Angel shocked the ski world when she retired in her prime and sailed off into the sunset. We talk about it all and her brother, another incredible athlete and human, John Collinson, asks the Inappropriate Questions. Angel Collinson Show Notes: 4:00: Impressions, where we left off last, blown knee, skiing was her track to everything, burnout, college, big mountain comps, fear, 21:00: Ski Idaho: With 19 mountains, a ton of snow and no lift lines, why wouldn't you Visit Idaho Best Day Brewing: All of the flavor of your favorite IPA or Kolsch, without the alcohol, the calories or sugar. 24:00: Pressure, loss, energy healing, grief, AK with Seth, Sage, and Dana, production of skiing, having an epiphany about skiing, and money 41:30: Elan Skis: Over 75 years of innovation that makes you better.

In this episode, Dennis is joined via Zoom by visual artist & production designer Nino Alicea whose larger-than-life installations Got Framed and Attabay's Treasure are currently on display in San Francisco's Embarcadero as part of the city's year-long Big Art Loop initiative. Nino talks about the inspiration for both pieces. Got Framed, with it's 91 roses, is inspired by his grandmother Rosemilia and Attabay's Treasure is a tribute to Nino's homeland of Puerto Rico and the challenges it face after Hurricane Maria. Both pieces, as well as several others, were initially created for Burning Man, where Nino has mounted several pieces over the last decade. Nino talks about the moment over ten years ago where, after a week at Burning Man, he pledged to himself that he would have an installation at next year's festival, even though he had little idea how he would pull that off. With the help of a small army of fellow artisans and at least on engineer, he did it...and he's been going back every year. Nino also talks about getting to create props for Ricky Martin's "All In" Las Vegas residency and world tour and how that opportunity came because he was in the right place at the right time and "just said yes" when the possibility was suggested to him. Other topics include: that time he spent a month making over a hurricane-damaged basketball court in Puerto Rico, the steps one must take to get a piece into Burning Man, why the best part of his work is all the people he gets to work with, that "Oh shit" moment at Burning Man when he realized he didn't have enough screws, how he used recycled pizza tins for the fish gills on Attabay's Treasure and that time Nino went viral with a comedic video sketch in a stage show Dennis co-hostened that would probably get them both cancelled today. www.leaveittonino.com

What do acclaimed Italian opera tenor Andrea Bocelli, a hideous whiskey-drinking Spanish-speaking monkey puppet, and the daughter of the Queen of Hearts all have in common? Well, apart from that unforgettable evening at Burning Man a few years back, absolutely nothing...until now. For our one and only Christmas episode of 2025, the randomizer is going all the way back to the mid-2020s to pick a trio of Christmas shorts - a Simpsons short where the "Con Te Partirò" guy serenades the most important family in Springfield, an Argentinian sitcom special where a repulsive talking monkey puppet forces holiday cheer down the throat of a depressed widower, and of course a Disney Channel music video where the offspring of a villain infamous for decapitating her subjects demands that Christmas must be bent to her will aesthetically. And if that's not what Christmas is all about, I don't know what is. Wait, yes I do. This is the Free Content version of my interview with author Graham St. John. To access the full interview, please consider joining Patreon as a paid member, or you can purchase the episode for a one-time fee. www.patreon.com/RejectedReligion. This month's guest is author Graham St. John, who joined me to discuss his new book, Strange Attractor: The Hallucinatory Life of Terence McKenna.Terence McKenna remains one of the most enigmatic voices of the psychedelic counterculture—equal parts philosopher, performer, and visionary. In this episode, we explore McKenna's mythopoetic “stoned ape” theory, his radical take on shamanism, the ‘teacher' Mushroom that leads one to the ‘indwelling of the Goddess', the mysteries of DMT and the “machine elves,” and his controversial Timewave Zero vision of history and hyperspace that embraced the I Ching and the Mayan calendar ‘2012 phenomenon.'Beyond psychedelics, McKenna was also fascinated with alchemy and Gnosticism, and while figures like Crowley, John Dee, and Gurdjieff were not embraced by McKenna, Graham nevertheless calls him a “psychedelic occultist”—a thinker whose visions of transformation resonate with centuries of esoteric tradition, even if McKenna probably would have resisted the label. Along the way, we unpack the tension between his cult of personality and his desire for academic legitimacy, and consider the legacy he left for today's psychedelic and occult communities.Unfortunately, I experienced some technical difficulties with my podcasting equipment, and the sound quality is not up to the normal standard. Luckily, my brother Daniel, who does the editing for the podcasts, was able to work his engineering magic and was able to salvage the file and clean up the audio the best he could. In this episode of Walk Talk Listen, Maurice Bloem is joined by Lorenz Sell, co-founder of Sutra, for a reflective conversation about humility, receiving, and what it means to create spaces—both digital and human—where genuine connection can emerge. Lorenz shares how experiences such as Burning Man became unexpected teachers in his life, challenging deeply ingrained habits of control, self-sufficiency, and productivity. In those liminal spaces, where usual social scripts fall away, he began to notice how difficult it can be—not to give, but to receive. Receiving attention, support, care, and presence requires a different posture: one rooted in humility. The conversation weaves together Lorenz's background in technology and engineering with his growing attention to inner development and relational practice. Rather than seeing technology as neutral or inevitable, he reflects on how digital environments quietly shape our behavior, our pace, and our ability to listen to one another. Designing spaces, he suggests, is always also designing relationships. Throughout the episode, humility is not framed as self-effacement, but as openness: a willingness to be changed by others and by experience. Receiving becomes an active practice—one that makes mutuality possible and allows communities of learning to form over time. This conversation is an invitation to slow down, to notice where we resist receiving, and to consider how the spaces we create—online and offline—can support deeper presence, trust, and shared becoming. And it also reminded me that receiving is not something we do once we understand—it's something we practice by listening a little longer. In the news this week, the President's birthday was added to the list of free entry days at the National Parks, meanwhile Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth were removed from the list. On today's show, host Allen Ruff is joined by activist and scholar Nicholas Powers to talk about the Trump administration's attacks on Black history and his latest article for Truthout, “Black History Has the Power to Ignite Movements. That's Why the Right Fears It.” Powers says that the Trump Administration is waging attacks on Black history at three levels: the economic, the cultural, and through voting rights. The closed doors of the African American History Museum in DC are both a symbolic and material closing off of Black history and culture. And that's added to the mass firings of more than 300,000 Black employees from their federal positions. The Trump administration is also criminalizing the teaching of Black history in schools. Attacking school curriculum gives permission to conservative activists who are now rewarded for promoting greater and greater acts of racism. The softening or erasing of the historical reality of American slavery and racism creates what Powers calls “a cartoon image of the nation,” one in which the US is presented as a nation always living up to its values. In Black history, Powers says, there is an opposing grand narrative to the American Dream, that of the American nightmare. He says we need a vision of “American realism” that is taught by Black history: that Black Americans belong here through their blood sweat and tears and that we're all equal in the eyes of god. Moreover, Black history has a transformative effect, empowering people to see more clearly the strategies and tactics that Black people used to gain greater freedom. Powers previews that there's another social movement, another wave, on its way to counter the reactionary work of the Right. When it arrives, we should add ourselves to it so that it becomes stronger. Nicholas Powers is the author of Thirst, a political vampire novel; The Ground Below Zero: 9/11 to Burning Man, New Orleans to Darfur, Haiti to Occupy Wall Street; and most recently, Black Psychedelic Revolution. His huge steel sculptures have graced Black Rock City for decades, then found forever homes in cities, festivals, and private collections around the world.Hear veteran structural sculptor Michael Christian go deep and wide about his Burning Man art, from a Bone Arch to a 65-foot tall tower. He shares about his installation "Down the Drain," a commentary on human alignment or misalignment... or maybe it's about toilets blowing kisses at each other! He talks with Stuart about the shift from a "lone artist" mindset to community collaboration, and how to get everything done despite a storm or a lost box of bolts. They tinker with the qualities of hubris and humility. They get real about why they keep returning to the collective happening in the dust. How does he follow intuition more than a thesis? How does he discover the meaning of his art only after he has built it? How did ‘out of the box' thinking become a 30 year career? These questions are answered with more questions in this episode right here.https://www.michaelchristian.com LIVE.BURNINGMAN.ORG
