In this episode, Martin talks to University of Michigan graduate Joe Henry, the accomplished singer-songwriter and music producer, about his new book Furious Cool: Richard Pryor and the World That Made Him. Written by Joe and his brother David, the book is a highly personal exploration into the life and times of the legendary comedian, a man who set the stage for the likes of Eddie Murphy, Louis C.K. and Chris Rock. Joe Henry also talks about plans for his next solo album, due out later in 2014, and shares his thoughts about the current state of the music industry.

For the January, 2014 broadcast of Word By Word: Conversations With Writers brothers Joe and David Henry join host Gil Mansergh to talk about their biography, Furious Cool: Richard Pryor and the World That Made Him. Joe is a singer songwriter who broke into the business as a Production Associate for Spinal Tap, the iconic band that never really was. Married since 1987 to Melanie Ciccone, Joe has penned songs for Madonna, Madeline Peyroux and Roseanne Cash. A Grammy-winning record producer, he has created albums with Louden Wainwright III, Elvis Costello, Aimee Mann, Mose Allison, Bonnie Raitt and Hugh Laurie (yes, that Hugh Laurie). David is an author, screenwriter and video & broadcast producer who lives in Louisville, Kentucky. This week we spoke with David Henry, co-author of Furious Cool: Richard Pryor and the World That Made Him, about Pryor's work, and why it was so groundbreaking. "He had this sort of vulnerability about himself that just made him irresistible," David says. "He didn't pull any punches." Throughout their research for the book, David and his co-author (and brother) Joe Henry, learned about how Richard honed his craft, sometimes working the same comedy club every night for a week, each night with an improved version of the previous night's material. We talked about Pryor's surprising comments on his sexual experiences with other men, his openness about his drug use, and why audiences of all races found him so relatable. "When he was on stage by himself with just a microphone, he seemed to understand everything about being a human being," David said. "He seemed to have such a clear-eyed view of life, and seemed to understand how people work—in ways that he couldn't really apply to his own life when he was offstage." [Note: As you might expect from an interview about Richard Pryor, there is some frank language in this interview!] In our Juicy Fruit segment this week, we talked about the upcoming video game Ultimate Gay Fighter, billed as the first-ever gay video game. We also talked about Dayna Morales, the server who says a family left her a homophobic note instead of a tip. This week, the family in question came forward with their copy of the receipt which shows they did tip, and now Morales' story is suspected of being a hoax. Furious Cool: Richard Pryor and the World That Made Him Richard Pryor attracted admiration and anger in equal parts. He was a comedian who many consider the greatest ever, yet his triumphant stand-up work has been largely eclipsed by his mediocre movie output. His personal life was likewise something of a contradiction, because Pryor was a man of deep intelligence and sensitivity yet was also someone who could never seem to make the pieces of his life come together to create a whole. His was a fascinating, larger-than-life personality; he was as pivotal and essential a figure. Pryor the solo artist brought to a pop-obsessed generation the news that they had a past with deep roots that spoke to our shared humanity. David Henry is a screenwriter and his brother, Joe Henry is a singer/songwriter as well as a music producer. This is their first book, and they are working on a screenplay based on Pryor's life and career.
