Picturing Aura: A Visual Biography (MIT Press, 2025) by Dr. Jeremy Stolow is the first book of its kind: an extended historical, anthropological, and philosophical study of modern efforts to visualize the hidden radiant force encompassing the living body known as our aura. This rich, interdisciplinary study by Dr. Stolow chronicles the rise and global spread of modern instruments and techniques of picturing aura, from the late nineteenth century to the present day, exploring how its images are put to work in the diverse realms of psychical research, esotericism, art photography, popular culture, and the New Age alternative medical and spiritual marketplace. At their core, pictures of auras are boundary objects that operate simultaneously in multiple conceptual and practical realms, serving varying goals of making art, healing bodies, and exploring the cosmos. Drawing on extensive archival as well as field research, Stolow reconstructs a global history of this boundary-crossing enterprise through its evolving media technologies, markets, and cultural arenas. It is a story shaped through exchanges among professionals and amateurs, scientists and occultists, countercultural artists and entrepreneurs, metropolitans and hinterland figures. With more than 60 full-color illustrations, Picturing Aura brings to light a remarkable, entangled history of picture-making that challenges settled assumptions about religion, art, and science. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Justin Bieber BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Justin Bieber has had an intense and revealing past week, making headlines with both deeply personal revelations and ongoing speculation about his music and business activities. According to Good Morning America, Bieber posted an emotional and candid Instagram message on June 16th, addressing his ongoing struggles with anger issues and describing himself as feeling "broken." He wrote, "People keep telling me to heal. Don't you think if I could have fixed myself I would have already?" Bieber went on to explain how his anger is a response to past trauma, stating, "My anger is a response to the pain I have been thru. Asking a traumatized person not to be traumatized is simply mean." In a separate post, he shared direct messages with an unidentified contact, ending the friendship after being accused of lashing out, and insisting that expressing anger is part of authentic relationships, not something to suppress. These posts have sparked a wave of support and concern among fans.On the lighter side, Justin has simultaneously shared glimpses of his family life, posting several photos with his son Jack Blues, whom he shares with wife Hailey Bieber. Celebrating milestones like Hailey's first Mother's Day, Bieber's social media has mixed vulnerability with moments of joy and pride in his new role as a father. Access Hollywood reports that despite his recent emotional confessions, Bieber has also been active in defending himself publicly. Just last week, he was caught on camera in a viral 11-minute confrontation with a paparazzo, where he passionately demanded respect, emphasizing that his anger is a reaction to being disrespected, not a sign of malice. There is ongoing speculation about a major comeback. Hypebeast and Puck News have both reported that Bieber is planning a return to music in 2025, possibly motivated by both creative desire and financial necessity after debts from a cancelled tour. Although his representatives have not confirmed a new album or tour, Rebel Music suggests preparations are underway for a global tour aligned with an upcoming album, which would be his first full project since 2021's Justice. On the business front, Bieber has parted ways with his long-time manager Scooter Braun, indicating a significant transformation in his professional circle, a move confirmed by multiple sources. On social media, Bieber's posts have trended for their candidness, including confessions about conflicts with Hailey—specifically noting past arguments about her career—and his critiques of transactional relationships. His candid admissions, ongoing family updates, and hints at a musical return continue to fuel speculation about his next chapter, underscoring a period of genuine transformation, vulnerability, and perhaps, reinvention for the pop star.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOta

Justin Bieber BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Justin Bieber has been at the center of a whirlwind of headlines and behind-the-scenes negotiations this week, with financial drama, personal milestones, and speculation about his musical comeback all making waves. According to TMZ and Reality Tea, Justin has nearly reached a major financial settlement with his longtime former manager Scooter Braun. The roots of their dispute go back to the abrupt cancellation of his Justice World Tour in 2022, which left Bieber indebted to AEG for $26 million. Braun's company, Hybe, stepped in and covered the debt, but Bieber had reportedly failed to fully pay back Hybe as agreed, with an independent PricewaterhouseCoopers audit revealing he still owes Braun $8.6 million in commissions and millions more in other outstanding payments over the years. With his wife Hailey Bieber having recently landed a staggering $1 billion deal for her beauty brand Rhode, sources close to the matter say Bieber has now agreed to settle his debts. TMZ notes the settlement is expected imminently, possibly within days, marking a significant turning point in one of pop music's most lucrative partnerships and putting an end to months of speculation about Bieber's financial status. On the music front, rumors about a 2025 comeback tour continue to swirl, though nothing has been officially confirmed. Rebel Music and Hypebeast have both reported that Bieber has been seen in the studio and that talks of a new album and global tour are gaining traction. However, given his recent focus on health and family—especially following the birth of his son Jack Blues Bieber—there's some skepticism about how quickly he'll take the stage again. Hypebeast points out that his 2022 tour cancellation was for health reasons tied to Ramsay Hunt syndrome, so observers are keenly watching for signs of his readiness to return.Social media has been both a platform for fan concern and a source of viral misinformation. A recent Instagram post by Bieber on June 18, as seen on his official page, hinted at personal frustration but details remain vague, prompting a wave of support and worry from fans. Meanwhile, Myth Detector debunked viral, fabricated quotes about Bieber and rapper P. Diddy circulating on social media, clarifying that Bieber has not commented on Diddy's legal troubles and is instead prioritizing his family life.In summary, Justin Bieber's week has been defined by a high-stakes business settlement with Scooter Braun about to close, ongoing but unconfirmed plans for a musical comeback, intense social media scrutiny, and a strong public focus on his wife and newborn son. These developments could signal a new era for the pop superstar, with the financial resolution and possible return to music both poised to reshape the next chapter of his legacy.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOta

Readers are encouraged to reflect on the Lord's shepherding presence that guides through green pastures, restores the soul, and offers comfort even in the darkest valleys. Whether standing beside the grave of buried hopes or basking in the sunshine of God's love, this book promises to be a source of comfort, strength, and inspiration, helping you to live out the serene trust and unshakeable peace that David himself experienced. About the Author J. Wilbur Chapman (1859-1918) was an American evangelist, pastor, and author known for his dynamic preaching style and evangelistic campaigns. He began his pastoral ministry in 1882, serving in several churches before becoming the pastor of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia in 1890. Chapman's ministry gained widespread attention for his emphasis on personal salvation and the power of prayer. He resigned from his pastoral position in 1903 to devote himself full-time to evangelistic work, teaming up with gospel singer Charles Alexander to conduct successful campaigns across the United States and abroad. Chapman's legacy lives on through his writing and the numerous pastors and evangelists he influenced.

Yes, the Popcorn guy. I quite enjoyed it and I was surprised by how fascinating and genuine he was as a person. And if anything, it fits into the weird food universe since he's so synonymous with the popcorn brand that people didn't even realize he was a real man and that was his real name." Chris tries to tell Paris all about Orville in this surprisingly laugh-a-minute episode about farming, business, and food marketing in the early-mid 20th century United States. Still, we must beware the Butter People as they are afoot once more. "I would say my books are about three quarters research and sort of mining my research, and then one quarter writing," says Hampton Sides, author of several New York Times bestselling works of narrative history, including his latest, now in paperback, The Wide Wide Sea. It's published by Doubleday. So Hampton was great. There was a moment halfway through where my dogs got to barking, then howling, which made me give them a stern talkin' to. I think I edited that out. I should have. Hope I did. I can tolerate a little barking in the background, but the howling is obnoxious. Hampton got a laugh out of all of it … He's the author of eight books including In the Kingdom of Ice, Hellhound on his Trail, and Ghost Soldiers. Here we talk about: How he found his lane of book writing Of transitioning from a journalist to a popular historian Finding the frame Writing in coffee shops Running to the computer in the middle of the night And an April Fool's Day joke gone horribly wrongLearn more about Hampton at hamptonsides.com and follow him on the gram @hamptonsidesauthor.Order The Front RunnerNewsletter: Rage Against the AlgorithmWelcome to Pitch ClubShow notes: brendanomeara.com

NLS annotation God save Benedict Arnold: the true story of America’s most hated man DB122599 Author: Kelly, Jack Reading Time: 8 hours, 42 minutes Read by: Jim Seybert Subjects: U.S. History, Biography “A gripping exploration of the intense psychology and character of Benedict Arnold, arguing that he was essential to victory before he was a traitor. Benedict Arnold committed treason — for more than two centuries, that’s all that most Americans have known about him. Yet Arnold was much more than a turncoat — his achievements during the early years of the Revolutionary War defined him as the most successful soldier of the era. GOD SAVE BENEDICT ARNOLD tells the gripping story of Arnold’s rush of audacious feats — his capture of Fort Ticonderoga, his Maine mountain expedition to attack Quebec, the famous artillery brawl at Valcour Island, the turning-point battle at Saratoga — that laid the groundwork for our independence. Arnold was a superb leader, a brilliant tactician, a supremely courageous military officer. He was also imperfect, disloyal, villainous. One of the most paradoxical characters in American history, and one of the most interesting. GOD SAVE BENEDICT ARNOLD does not exonerate him for his treason — the stain on his character is permanent. But Kelly’s insightful exploration of Arnold’s career as a warrior shines a new light on this gutsy, fearless, and enigmatic figure. In the process, the book offers a fresh perspective on the reasons for Arnold’s momentous change of heart”– Provided by publisher. Unrated. Commercial audiobook. New York : Tantor Media, Inc., 2023. Stephanie Gorton is a writer, editor, and journalist whose work has been published in a range of outlets including The New Yorker, Smithsonian, and Paris Review Daily. She has worked in editorial roles at several independent presses, and her first book came out in 2020, titled Citizen Reporters: S. S. McClure, Ida Tarbell, and the Magazine that Rewrote America. Her second book, which came out in November, is The Icon and the Idealist: Margaret Sanger, Mary Ware Dennett, and the Rivalry that Brought Birth Control to America. It's a fascinating dual biography that brings to life two complicated leaders of the birth control movement in the early 1900s, and the lasting impact of their actions and interactions. We spoke early this year, and I loved getting to hear more about Stephanie's research and writing process, especially how she thought about narrative structure and revising with feedback.

According to Deborah Baker, author of Charlottesville: An American Story, America has become the Charlottesville of the Unite the Right Rally of August 12, 2017. Baker, who grew up in Charlottesville in the shadow of Jefferson's Monticello, watched in shock as neo-Nazis marched through her hometown in August 2017 with torches and flags. What began as her attempt to understand how such hatred could manifest in a progressive college town became a deeper reckoning with America's buried histories and recurring tragedies. The fascist ideologies that once seemed confined to internet forums and fringe rallies have now, she argues, been institutionalized at the highest levels of government. The warning signs were there in 2017—but too many people, from university administrators to progressive leaders, chose to look away. If we close our eyes, she warns, it won't go away. five key takeaways1. America Has Institutionalized ExtremismWhat began as fringe internet movements and basement trolling has now moved into the mainstream of American politics and government institutions. The ideologies that shocked people in Charlottesville 2017 are now, according to Baker, embedded at the highest levels of power.2. Progressive Institutions Failed to Take the Threat SeriouslyUniversity administrators, mayors, and police chiefs in liberal Charlottesville told citizens to "stay home" and ignore the approaching Unite the Right rally. This pattern of progressive leadership closing their eyes to fascist organizing represents a dangerous institutional failure that continues today.3. White Supremacy Has Always Married Anti-Semitism with Anti-Black RacismThe Nazi flags at Charlottesville weren't separate from the Confederate monuments debate. White supremacist ideology consistently portrays Jews as the puppet masters behind Black civil rights movements, combining European fascism with Southern white supremacy into a unified hateful worldview.4. America's "Buried Histories" Keep RepeatingBaker discovered that Charlottesville had experienced a similar white supremacist rally in the 1950s that had been completely forgotten. This pattern of burying ugly chapters allows the same mistakes to be repeated, as communities fail to learn from their past encounters with organized hate.5. Economic and Political Destabilization Creates Fertile Ground for FascismThe conditions that radicalized figures like Richard Spencer include the "forever wars," the 2008 financial crisis, and the broader betrayal of working-class Americans. These "self-inflicted wounds" by American institutions create the chaos that fascist movements exploit to gain followers.Deborah Baker was born in Charlottesville and grew up in Virginia, Puerto Rico and New England. She attended the University of Virginia and Cambridge University. Her first book, written in college, was Making a Farm: The Life of Robert Bly, published by Beacon Press in 1982. After working as a book editor and publisher, in 1990 she moved to Calcutta where she wrote In Extremis; The Life of Laura Riding. Published by Grove Press and Hamish Hamilton in the UK, it was shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize in Biography in 1994. Her third book, A Blue Hand: The Beats in India was published by Penguin Press USA and Penguin India in 2008. In 2008–2009 she was a Fellow at the Dorothy and Lewis C. Cullman Center for Writers and Scholars at The New York Public Library. There she researched and wrote The Convert: A Tale of Exile and Extremism, a narrative account of the life of an American convert to Islam. Published by Graywolf and Penguin India, The Convert was a finalist for the 2011 National Book Award in Non-Fiction. The Last Englishmen: Love, War and the End of Empire was published in October 2018. For this book she received a Whiting Creative Non-fiction grant and a Guggenheim fellowship. Charlottesville is her sixth work of narrative non-fiction. She is married to the writer Amitav Ghosh and lives in Brooklyn and Charlottesville.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In this episode of the Shakespeare and Company Podcast, Adam Biles speaks with acclaimed author Catherine Lacey about her daring new work The Möbius Book. Structured as a "Tête-bêche"—two intertwined texts printed back-to-back—the book pairs a memoir chronicling the fallout of a painful breakup with a novella that spirals into the psychological suspense of a possible murder next door. As the narratives bend and mirror each other, Lacey explores the porous boundary between fiction and nonfiction, faith and doubt, intimacy and estrangement. The conversation dives deep into Lacey's creative process, her early entanglement with religion, the disorienting legacy of male anger, and how the pandemic shaped her understanding of confinement and rupture. Candid and philosophical, Lacey reflects on memory's distortions, the ethics of writing memoir, and the liberating act of leaving questions unanswered. Buy The Möbius Book: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/the-mobius-bookCatherine Lacey is the author of the novels Nobody Is Ever Missing, The Answers, Pew, and Biography of X, and the short story collection Certain American States. With her signature tuxedo, top hat, and booming voice, Bentley captivated crowds at speakeasies and underground clubs, belting blues lyrics that were as bold as her presence. But behind the spotlight was a woman navigating the complex intersections of race, sexuality, fame, and personal identity in a deeply conservative era. From her rise to fame at the legendary Clam House to the pressures that led her to publicly renounce her queerness during the McCarthy era, Bentley's story is one of resilience, reinvention, and radical self-expression. OK, let's get into the song! In Conversations with Tom Petty, Tom tells author Paul Zollo “I wrote that on the drive to the studio in Bugs' truck. My trusty roadie Bugs was driving me to work—and I got this idea for this song, “Billy The Kid.” I pulled out a pad as we were going over Topanga Canyon with all those curves, so I was really writing on the edge of the paper, and back and forth in the truck. And I wrote it all out on the way to work, and I had the tune in my head.” Any songwriter will tell you that it's massively exciting when that thunderbolt of inspiration hits and words or music come at you all at once. In this case, Tom had the words flowing and the tune only in his head, rather than it coming from sitting around noodling on the guitar and then framing in lyrics later. It's especially gratifying to hear for me because that's almost always how I write; a specific line or chorus and then some basic melody.Song : https://youtu.be/WHVywrWjjrQLive from the Fonda - 2013: https://tinyurl.com/26yv2c2fDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Spies, Lies and Allies is a thrilling tale about two forgotten revolutionaries who led lives that defy belief. It takes the reader on a wild ride through Kolkata, Hyderabad, London, Paris, Berlin, Stockholm, Mexico City and Moscow. One was Virendranath Chattopadhyaya, the brother of Sarojini Naidu. The other was M.N. Roy, the founder of Indian communism. Chatto and Roy met spies, dictators, femme fatales, assassins, revolutionaries and bomb-makers. They encountered Lala Lajpat Rai, Veer Savarkar, Vladimir Lenin, Sun Yat-Sen, Chiang Kai-shek, Joseph Stalin, Mohandas Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. They travelled in disguise and survived assassination attempts by the British secret service. They had tumultuous love affairs with suspected Communist spies. They flirted with anarchism, then became communists, and Roy would eventually end up founding his own philosophy: humanism. Chatto's sister Sarojini would distance herself from his journey, and his friend Nehru would eventually follow the Gandhian path. Roy would be ignored in newly independent India. But if Chatto and Roy were failures, they were magnificent ones. They battled for their ideas, and their ideas lived on, even if the pair died mostly forgotten. Author Kavitha Rao will be in conversation with Historian Vanya Vaidehi Bhargav. The war that would transform Rome forever begins not with grand ideology, but with Caesar's refusal to submit to humiliation—and his enemies' fatal miscalculation of the man they sought to crush.Works CitedKurt Raaflaub (ed.), The Landmark Julius CaesarMatthias Gelzer, Caesar: Politician and StatesmanErich Gruen, Last Generation of the Roman Republic Thanks to our sponsor, Ai Labs.
