Malicious streetlights are an evil trick from Dark Data Journalism. Some annoying enemy has a valid complaint. So you use FACTS and LOGIC to prove that something similar-sounding-but-slightly-different is definitely false. Then you act like you've debunked the complaint. My "favorite" example, spotted during the 2016 election, was a response to some #BuildTheWall types saying that illegal immigration through the southern border was near record highs. Some data journalist got good statistics and proved that the number of Mexicans illegally entering the country was actually quite low. When I looked into it further, I found that this was true - illegal immigration had shifted from Mexicans to Hondurans/Guatemalans/Salvadoreans etc entering through Mexico. If you counted those, illegal immigration through the southern border was near record highs. But the inverse evil trick is saying something "directionally correct", ie slightly stronger than the truth can support. If your enemy committed assault, say he committed murder. If he committed sexual harassment, say he committed rape. If your drug increases cancer survival by 5% in rats, say that it "cures cancer". Then, if someone calls you on it, accuse them of "literally well ackshually-ing" you, because you were "directionally correct" and it's offensive to the victims to try to defend assault-committed sexual harassers. This is the sort of pathetic defense I called out in If It's Worth Your Time To Lie, It's Worth My Time To Correct It. But trying to call out one of these failure modes looks like falling into the other. I ran into this on my series of posts on crime last week. I wrote these because I regularly saw people make the arguments I tried to debunk. https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/malicious-streetlight-effects-vs

62% of Trump voters say being MAGA is not an important part of their identity. So who, exactly, did we just elect? Stephen Hawkins has been trying to answer that question with data for nearly a decade. As Director of Research at More in Common since its founding in 2016, he helped author the landmark Hidden Tribes study and now leads the Beyond MAGA project, the most comprehensive look yet at the psychology of the 77 million Americans who voted for Donald Trump in 2024. In this conversation, Corey and Stephen dig into the four distinct types of Trump voters, the emergent phenomenon of "traditionalism" among Gen Z, the widening gap between MAGA hard-liners and the reluctant right, and what any of this means for a country that our guest describes as feeling "pre-hot conflict." Stephen brings the rigor of a public opinion researcher and the perspective of someone who has lived, worked, and changed his mind on both sides of America's ideological divide. This is not a conversation about demonizing Trump voters or excusing them. It is about understanding them, and about what that understanding demands of the rest of us. The Beyond MAGA study surveyed nearly 11,000 Trump voters and found four distinct segments: MAGA Hard-liners (29%), Anti-Woke Conservatives (21%), Mainline Republicans (30%), and the Reluctant Right (20%). Three out of five Trump voters say being MAGA is not a central part of their identity. The Exhausted Majority Under Pressure. Stephen expects Hidden Tribes 2.0 to show the wings have grown, not shrunk. The exhausted majority may be moving from exhaustion toward something closer to despair. New Traditionalism and the Logic of Transgression. Among younger Trump voters, traditional or religious identity functions as a form of rebellion in a secular culture. For some Gen Z voters, Christianity is more countercultural than secularism. Supporting Trump taps the same energy as defying the teacher everyone dislikes. The Respect Gap. 84% of Trump voters feel respected by Trump. Only 21% feel respected by Democratic politicians. That 63-point gap is why even reluctant Trump voters are unlikely to migrate to the other party, regardless of policy grievances. No Inflection Points. The Epstein files, Greenland threats, Medicare subsidy rollbacks, military actions in Venezuela and Iran: none of them meaningfully moved Trump voter support. Reconsideration is happening among those who were already hesitant, not among convinced supporters. Stories, Values, Listen. Corey and Stephen both land on the same framework for better cross-divide conversation: surface the other person's story, understand their underlying value system (not just their policy positions), and listen with genuine curiosity rather than loading up your rebuttal. The Case for Clarity. More in Common is nonpartisan and does not have electoral ambitions, but Stephen does not mince words: the country feels pre-hot-conflict, and what it needs is not more outrage but more precision about who is actually out there and what they believe. About Our Guest Stephen Hawkins is Director of Research at More in Common, a nonpartisan organization working to understand and address the forces driving political division in nine countries. He has overseen the organization's research since its founding in 2016, including the landmark 2018 Hidden Tribes study and the 2026 Beyond MAGA project. Prior to More in Common, Stephen conducted public opinion research for Fortune 100 companies, United Nations agencies, electoral campaigns, and political movements. He has appeared on C-SPAN's Washington Journal and regularly on Colorado Matters. Today he's here to talk about his new book, The Laws of Thought: The Quest for a Mathematical Theory of the Mind. In this book, Tom explains how the three pillars of logic, neural networks, and probability theory complement each other to explain cognition, arguing we are on the doorstep to settling what mathematical principles - the so-called "laws of thought" - underly our cognition. So we discuss a little bit about a lot of things, including the concepts themselves, the people who have generated and worked on those concepts. I should also mentioned, Tom recorded a bunch of his interviews with people he writes about, and he's edited and polished those into a podcast called the Cognition Project, which I have enjoyed after reading the book, and I think you'd enjoy it either before or after you read the book. In this episode of MyMusic, host Graham Coath is joined by London-based artist JudeS, whose music blends cultures, languages and personal storytelling.Originally from Naples, JudeS talks about moving to London and how the city shaped her as both a person and an artist. What began as an attempt to distance herself from her roots eventually became a powerful part of her sound, with JudeS now combining English and Neapolitan to create music filled with emotion and authenticity. During the conversation Graham and JudeS explore:• The story behind her artist name and how JudeS came to be• How living between Naples and London influences her songwriting• The role of culture, language and identity in music• Her creative process using tools like GarageBand, Logic and Ableton• Writing songs that turn personal experiences into artJudeS also talks about her track "Game Over, Ovèr", a song inspired by a breakup that ultimately became a story about personal growth and becoming a stronger version of yourself. Along the way, the conversation moves from songwriting and Neapolitan culture to tambourines, festival memories and the unexpected influence of Neapolitan ice cream. It's a warm, humorous and thoughtful conversation about music, identity and finding your voice as an artist.Listen now and discover the story and sound of JudeS on MyMusic.
In this edition of The Update Journal, we begin with a simple Sunday night question: What exactly is “Roar,” and why does it sound like a network invented by someone who lost a bet? From there, we stumble into The Weakest Link, where trivia dreams go to die and former mayors are apparently rebranded as billionaires. Then comes the Diamond Deck from Wildcard Kitchen—a collection of cards so diabolical it feels less like cooking and more like a culinary hostage situation. “Use an ingredient that starts with Y.” Y? Y what? Yams and yelling are the only acceptable answers. And letting one chef pick another chef's protein while chaos reigns? That's not a twist. That's violence with garnish. And finally, Brandon's Take: why I keep doing this show after nine years, countless blizzards, studio floods, transit meltdowns, and relatives asking if I've considered a “real job.” Logic says I could've stopped. Common sense says I probably should've. But when you love telling stories, roasting television executives, and turning civic dysfunction into content, quitting just doesn't feel right. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Wednesday, millions across the northeast contended with treks to school and work as they dug out from a major — and in some areas record-breaking — storm that blanketed the region with snow, canceled flights, disrupted transit and killed at least one person. The NYPD are investigating after officers were pelted with snowballs while responding to a massive snowball fight at Washington Square Park in Manhattan. And the city's commuter chaos continued with subway-line suspensions and delays — the day after MTA chief Janno Lieber assured New Yorkers that the agency “is here for you'' and “the system is running.''CUNY's chancellor slammed the “clearly offensive and abhorrent” hot mic comments Hunter professor Allyson Friedman made about black students — but said she was still teaching. And in Washington, President Trump declared during a marathon State of the Union that “we're winning so much” — insisting he'd sparked an economic boom at home and imposed a new world order abroad in hopes it can counter his sliding approval ratings.

Ted Nugent joins Chad for a wide-open conversation that goes everywhere. They start with politics (something Ted has never shied away from) and get deep into his views on leadership, freedom, conservation, and the role hunters play in protecting wildlife and the land. From there, the conversation moves into what Ted has always loved most: hunting and the outdoor lifestyle. Ted explains why hunting, conservation, and personal responsibility are all tied together, and why he believes the hunting community still has such an important role to play. They also talk music, some major moments Ted has experienced recently, and what he's working on next. It's honest, passionate, and exactly what you'd expect when Ted Nugent sits down at the mic. Artificial intelligence or the pandemics were two recentcrises framed as almost magical non-human actors. They both reshaped the boundaries of human agency. By now,the language explaining them is often one of rupture and unprecedented transformation. AI or COVID-19 were described as opaque, autonomous and difficult to control. Both were imagined as operating beyond ordinaryaccountability, while still exerting real effects on collective life. In that sense, the anxiety does not result only from the fear of machines or unknown germs. It concerns the displacement of agency and the fragility of human beings tasked with governing forces they did not design and do not fully understand. Humans are unsettled when power seems to migrate beyond the human subject.Yet the fear of the non-human as a destabilising force isnot new. What we would like to pinpoint in our series it that societies, when confronted with such moments of rupture, authorize forms of exclusion and violence based on (ir)rationalism. Our focus throughout this series will fallon the vampire and witchcraft epidemics. European societies once confronted witches, revenants and vampires as threats to moral and political order. These figures emerged at moments of epidemic disease, religious fracture andinstitutional weakness. They offered an explanation for crisis. This new dossier revisits those episodes of collectiveanxiety. Whilst the differences between AI, pandemics and zombies, witches and undead are substantial, these moments reveal the fragile boundary between the rational state and collective hysteria. The imagery resulted can be a finebarometer of the how states respond when agency seems to escape human control or what mechanisms of blame, purification and boundary-drawing are activated. In our second podcast of this series, we have as guest Kateryna Dysa, with whom we will discuss her extremely fascinating book Ukrainian Witchcraft Trials: Volhynia, Podolia, and Ruthenia, 17th and 18th Centuries, published by the CEU Press in 2023. In this research, she reconstructs the history of witchcraft in Ukraine, with a particular focus on the three so-called “Ruthenian” palatinates of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth: Podolia, Ruthenia, and Volhynia. Our conversation begins with a conceptual question: what counts as a witch and who defines one? Kateryna Dysa reveals that geographical nuances need to be taken into account. In a region situated at the nexus between Catholicism andOrthodoxy, the definitions were less fixed as they emerged from the local community rather from theologians. The nature of primary sources also differs from thetraditional scholarship on this field. Drawing on 198 primary sources, most of them court books, Dysa reveals a judicial culture markedly different from the better-known Western European persecutions. In most cases, accusations did notculminate in execution. Often, only complaints were recorded; investigations were limited, and verdicts tended to be mild. Death sentences were rare and typically entangled withstark social hierarchies, where accusations flowed upward from elites against socially vulnerable individuals. The episode then turns to gender. Rather than endorsing a monolithic narrative of patriarchal persecution, Dysa emphasizes the social logic of witchcraft accusations as embedded in everyday tensions, including fears surrounding love magic, food, and bodily vulnerability. Finally, the discussion moves to the Enlightenment and Romanticism. In the eighteenth century, state centralization and rationalist reform curtailed formal prosecutions, but popular belief persisted, sometimes leading to extrajudicial violence. In thenineteenth century, Romanticism transformed the witch into a literary and folkloric figure, reshaping her image and symbolic function.

In a world of constant change and advances in technology, Artificial Intelligence is also raising the bar on Emotional Intelligence. Jason Barger explains. Jason explores the critical intersection of high-tech and high-touch, explaining why the rise of Artificial Intelligence makes human Emotional Intelligence more valuable than ever before. Please rate and review the podcast to help amplify these messages to others! Summary: As we move toward a future where AI handles our data, our schedules, and even our strategic analysis, what remains for the human leader? In this episode of The Thermostat, Jason V Barger deconstructs the "AI" of Authentic Interaction. He argues that rather than making leaders obsolete, technology is actually raising the bar for corporate culture and leadership in teams. Drawing from recent Forbes predictions for 2030 and current workforce trends, Jason identifies why the "scarcity premium" of the next decade will be placed on empathy, transparency, and genuine human connection. This conversation moves beyond the "scary" or "exciting" headlines of automation to address the core mechanics of how elite leaders build high-trust ecosystems. Essential listening for C-Suite executives and managers navigating the technological tide, this episode offers a strategic framework for doubling down on the traits that AI cannot duplicate: vulnerability, motive transparency, and authentic purpose. Episode Notes & Timestamps: [00:00] Intro: Jason welcomes listeners to Season 10, reflecting on over 300 episodes dedicated to calibrating the leadership thermostat. [00:03] The AI Paradox: Why artificial intelligence is the most discussed topic in boardrooms today and the spectrum of fear and excitement surrounding it. [00:06] Predictions for 2030: A breakdown of the Forbes forecast—from AI therapists and accountants to the normalization of humanoid robots in the workplace. [00:08] The Authentic Interaction (AI) Framework: Jason introduces his thesis: The more advanced technology becomes, the more humans crave authentic interaction. [00:09] Authenticity as a Trust Driver: Revisiting the three pillars of trust (Authenticity, Logic, and Empathy) and why showing up genuinely is now a competitive advantage. [00:10] Pillar 1: Genuineness: The importance of leaders admitting imperfections and sharing their vision to attract and retain top talent. [00:11] Pillar 2: Transparency: How proactive sharing of information and motives prevents the "manipulation" trap and drives engagement. [00:12] Pillar 3: Connection: Addressing the fundamental human need to belong to a mission greater than oneself, which no algorithm can satisfy. This episode focuses on practical strategies to obtain a high‑yield history that drives accurate ED diagnosis. This includes structured approaches (like OLD CARTS), critical pitfalls to avoid, and specific red flags for conditions such as ACS and dissection. It emphasizes reading the triage note, seeking collateral information from unreliable historians, and resisting anchoring by deliberately considering rare, dangerous diagnoses first.

In this leadership episode, Ryan sits down with Mitch Weisburgh to explore Mind Shifting — a brain-based framework designed to help educators and leaders develop resourcefulness, resilience, and constructive collaboration. If you lead a school or district, this episode digs into: Emotional regulation under pressure Conflict resolution styles Brain science behind stress and decision-making How to create long-term engagement and agency in staff and students The conversation connects directly to PBL environments, where collaboration, innovation, and engagement are essential. What Is Mind Shifting? Mitch defines Mind Shifting as the ability to intentionally move from reactive survival thinking to resourceful, solution-focused thinking. It consists of three core elements: 1. Resourcefulness Recognizing when you're “stuck” or emotionally triggered Quieting the reactive brain (limbic system) Accessing executive function for critical thinking, innovation, and connection Helping students co-regulate and self-direct When leaders stay resourceful, they model it for staff and students. 2. Resilience Resilience isn't “pushing through failure.” It's removing the concept of failure altogether. Instead: Try something. Gather information. Adjust. Mitch shares the story of a Finnish superintendent who didn't view initiatives as failures — only experiments that produced data. Key shift:From “Did this work?”To “What did we learn?” 3. Conflict & Collaboration Conflict is inevitable. The question is how we use it. Mitch explains five conflict resolution styles: Compete – “Do it because I said so.” Accommodate – Giving the other person what they want. Avoid – Delay or disengage. Compromise – Both sides give up something. Collaborate – Expand the solution to meet both parties' needs. No style is inherently wrong.Effective leaders are flexible and intentional. True long-term change requires collaboration — especially in PBL environments. The Brain Science Behind It When stressed: The limbic system activates. Cortisol and adrenaline flood the brain. Logical thinking decreases. Defensiveness increases. You cannot reason someone out of a survival state. This applies to: Students Teachers Administrators Skeptical staff Regulation first. Logic second. The Sage Mindset for Leaders In chaotic weeks (which every principal knows well), Mitch recommends adopting a Sage Perspective: Step 1: Is This Really Important? Apply the Pareto Principle: 20% of issues = 80% of impact Don't overinvest in low-impact frustrations Step 2: Identify the Gift Every challenge offers one of three gifts: Gift of Learning – What did I learn? Gift of Practice – What skill did I practice? Gift of Intention – What action will this trigger? That action could be: A personal reset/reward A collaborative discussion A strategic adjustment This reframes stress into growth. Strength-Based Feedback: The CASES Framework Mitch shares a structure used in Finland called CASES: C – Context (What happened, factually) A – Action (What the person did) S – Strength (What positive trait showed up) E – Effect (Impact of the action) S – Step Forward (Collaboratively decide next move) It shifts discipline from confrontation to development. The key: Practice it until fluent. You won't access structure in the heat of the moment without rehearsal. Application in PBL Environments Ryan reflects on how: High-trust classrooms allow occasional “compete” moments. Emotional regulation prevents power struggles. Psychological safety enables challenge and growth. Agency lowers cortisol. In Magnify Learning PBL workshops: Clear outcomes reduce anxiety. Chunked steps prevent overwhelm. Participant-driven “Need to Know” sessions build ownership. Brain science explains why this works. How to Handle Skeptics You don't debate them. When people are in survival mode: Stress hormones block logic. Evidence won't land. Instead: Frame mind shifting as a way to improve critical thinking and perseverance. Let personal realization happen naturally. Focus on student outcomes first. People buy in when they see themselves in the process. Practical Takeaways for School Leaders Emotional regulation is leadership currency. You model the nervous system of your building. Collaboration builds long-term commitment. Conflict can produce better solutions — if handled intentionally. Practice structured communication before you need it. Agency lowers fear. Resilience = experimentation, not perfection. In this episode, hosts Chandra and Paul are joined by Haiyan Wang, the architect and inventor of Logic Extensions, to discuss the power and practical applications of no-code/low-code tools within JD Edwards. Haiyan gives an overview and live demonstration of how Logic Extensions can be used to streamline processes, support decustomization, and improve efficiency—using examples like automating default values for form fields and enabling conditional logic beyond what standard event rules offer in a user-friendly development environment that minimizes the need for traditional programming skills. 04:49 Introducing Haiyan Wang 05:49 How did logic extensions come about? 09:31 Logic Extension Overview 13:35 Table I/O - Defining Data Structure 17:58 Defining API Mapping Parameters 18:50 Boolean Explanation 24:00 Form Extension with Logic Applied 28:49 Logic Extensions Enable Else-If 33:10 Midwesternism of the Day Resources: Understanding Logic Extensions: https://docs.oracle.com/en/applications/jd-edwards/cross-product/9.2/eotos/understanding-logic-extensions.html Logic Extensions for Business Analysts: https://docs.oracle.com/en/applications/jd-edwards/lex-business-analysts/ Ep 39: https://questoraclecommunity.org/learn/podcasts/thejdeconnection_episode39_decustomization-with-pete-cotton-part1/ Ep 40: https://questoraclecommunity.org/learn/podcasts/thejdeconnection_episode40_decustomization-with-pete-cotton-part2/
This week on NAFC, the crew starts off with Discord issuing an apology for that weird age verification fiasco—because nothing says community like uploading your ID to talk about anime.Izzy goes deep into Mewgenics again, fully embracing whatever chaotic timeline we're living in. There's also talk about Resident Evil Requiem and whether Capcom still knows how to cook.Somehow the episode spirals into a heated debate: back in or front in parking? Friendships are tested. Logic is abandoned. AirPod Pros also get their own segment after surviving a full laundry cycle like they're built by Nokia. Finally, the gang dives into 13 Assassins (2010)—Takashi Miike's brutal, methodical samurai epic. Joshua Barsczewski is assistant professor of English literatures and writing and Writing Program director at Muhlenberg College. Adequate: Rewriting the Logics of Success in Rhetoric and Composition proposes a fresh approach to teaching rhetoric and composition—a field awash with unrealistic labor expectations and untenable and often unattainable requirements for both the educator and the educated—that takes “success” and “failure” out of the equation and advocates for the concept of adequacy over that of perfection. In December 1957, Business Week profiled a new device from General Electric. The author begins by saying: A new device in a pea-sized package stands a good chance of hitting the electrical industry as thunderously as its older and more famous relative, the transistor, struck electronics How often does a business article hail some new technology like this? And how often does the thing actually live up to such words? The article was talking about the Silicon Thyristor. And it did indeed revolutionize the electric industry. In this video, the discovery and nearly 70 year impact of the first solid-state power electronics device.

Our book this month has JUST been released. In fact, the publisher shared an Advanced Reader Copy with us so we could review it as it's being released. The book is LAWS OF LOVE AND LOGIC by Debra Curtis.Dutiful and romantic, Lily Webb is growing up in Rhode Island in 1976 and is in love with her high school football star boyfriend. There are two huge events which alter the course of Lily's charmed life. First, her wonderful, smart, science- and God loving mom, dies when Lily is in 7th grade. This impacts her and also her younger sister, Jane, who is extremely smart and also a bit of a wild child.Second, her boyfriend gets into a fight and accidentally causes grave physical harm to another student, sending him to prison. The rest of the book is about how Lily moves forward with her life and the life that could have been. This is Debra Curtis' debut novel. Friend of the podcast and best-selling author of Remarkably Bright Creatures, Shelby Van Pelt, says this about the book, “At once sweeping and intimate, Laws of Love and Logic is a gorgeous meditation on roads not taken. Debra Curtis is not afraid to explore big questions about love and loss, but always with tenderness.”This is another sister book! In this book, Lily is our main character, but her sister Jane plays a very important role in her life. They are very different characters, with Lily being much more conventional and brilliant Jane rebelling against the norms of society. In our next episodes, we welcome the author of THE LAWS OF LOVE AND LOGIC, Debra Curtis, to the front porch.
