John Conte Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson What crazy fun to sit down with my old dear friend, bassist John Conte, whom I hadn't seen in decades. How is it possible that he appears to have aged barely a day? Seriously! John took us back to childhood days, his jazz-singing mother, Rosemary, his early days on guitar, and his brother Steve at first on drums. Their first band when John was 8 or 9, their early songwriting, including John's first song, Maryanne, Sittin on a Log, which he gave us a little taste of. He was a boy with a dream of playing arenas with rock stars. He told us how they flipped instruments, with John choosing bass. His college days, jazz-infused, where he gigged around with stellar players like Terence Blanchard. We tripped down memory lane, where we met, in the md-80s at The Rock 'n Roll Cafe on Bleecker Street, 1/2 of The Brothers of Conte, as I affectionately came to call them, with his brother Steve, they were weekly regulars whenever their schedules allowed. John was in Blood, Sweat & Tears, his first major gig, at the time, and told us all about that. Great stories there, including playing Madison Square Garden. Not bad for a 23-year-old. During their tenure at the Rock 'N Roll, late one rainy night they brought in their friend, Phoebe Snow, a life changer for me who had been a diehard fan since high school. The Phoeb's and I became fast friends, and I have the boys to thank for that as well as for years of amazing live music there, and at Spo-dee-o-dee's, Woody's, RockGirl, The Marquee, The Cafe Wha, True Blue and The China Club, where they were also a part of my RockGirl Jam Band. A stellar bassist, with an easy temperament and oh so easy on the eyes, it was always a joy when John was around. I made him tell his requisite Chuck Berry story. At that same time, the Conte brothers, as part of The Hudson River Rats, were laying the foundation for much of the session and road work that was to follow. Like Finding himself in the studio with Tony Visconti and David Bowie. John's description of hearing Bowie vocalize in his ear gave me goosebumps. He talked about laying down tracks with Peter Wolf and Ian Hunter, getting to jam with loads of his heroes. The Conte Brothers connected with Kyf Brewer and Company of Wolves were borne. They did some showcases, got signed, did a tour with Richard Marx, and foreshadowed John's future, one with Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes. John talked us through touring with Joan Osbourne (beautiful words here), Roseanne Cash, and Southside Johnny choosing him in 2007, a gig that would take him through to present day. There was a short tour with Billy Joel during his 2012 comeback with our friend, Tommy Byrnes, lovely to hear John's take on it, and great stories about his tenure playing with The Disciples of Soul, the house band for the American Music Honors where he got to play with honorees, Jackson Browne, Mavis Staples, John Mellencamp and Dion, as well as host, Bruce Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt. John's shared the stage with Bruce numerous times before, memorably for an impromptu 45-minute set with Southside. John's recounting of that and of playing with Peter Frampton (and Sheryl Crow) at the Sandy Hook Promise Benefit is another moving, goosebump-inducing tale. I loved every single second with my old friend. It's thrilling to see how his life has played and continues to play out. The young boy living his dream. Southside Johnyy's future may be unsure, but John's certainly isn't. He's always got multiple projects cooking, his own music in the works - check him out here johnconte.bandcamp.com and here Facebook.com/johncontebass I just adore the boy. He'll always be a rockboy to me and damn, he sure still looks like one. Guitarist and session ace Richard Bennett joins me on the show this week. Originally from Phoenix, Richard spent the first big chunk of his career in the 70's LA studio scene, before moving to Nashville in the 80's where he's been a mainstay in studios ever since. Richard is known as one of the ultimate sidemen and spent 17 years in Neil Diamond's band, playing on all of his records and tours from '71 to '87. Richard has had another long-term sideman gig playing guitar in Mark Knopfler's band since '94, and that continues to this day, touring in his band and playing on all of his records, including the latest “One Deep River” from this year. Aside from those impressive long-term gigs, Richard has played on countless sessions and gigs for artists like Roseanne Cash, Marty Stuart, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, Iris Dement, and Waylon Jennings. He also loves to write and record his own music, and is constantly working on the next set of tunes to get into the studio to document. His latest is called “Talltale Tunes” and it's a killer record of great playing, tone and creativity. Richard is also an in-demand producer and has helmed an impressive list of albums in the last few decades as well. He had a huge role in the Nashville session scene of the 80's and 90's that continues to thrive, and I loved getting a chance to hear about that era of Nashville. I've spent the last year playing in a band with Richard called The Volcano Brothers, playing all 1920's and 30's Hawaiian music, with Richard playing ukulele. While we just play tiny local gigs around Nashville with that band, I still get to see and hear Richard's amazing touch on his instruments, and the dedication and the preparation that he puts into every show, no matter how small! He's an incredible musician, an encouraging band-mate, and an inspiring person to be around, and we had a very enjoyable conversation about his history in music and the recording studio. One thing Roseanne Cash and I had in common was that we didn't like the movie I Walk the Line. She was Johnny's daughter, and I interviewed him three times. The movie presented him as little more than a lovesick fool. But here is Roseanne reminiscing about her dad and talking about that "revolutionary" recording, You Don't Know Me, by Ray Charles.
Patrick Hickey, Jr. Of Review Fix, described today's guest as a smooth and charming Americana folk pop artist who puts her whole self into her writing and performances, using honest and witty lyrics about heartache and strength, paired with catchy melodies. Recently honored by the New Jersey Arts and Music songwriting contest for the title track "I'm Not That Girl", her roots inspired sound includes multiple albums as well as her EP, "I'm Not That Girl" and "Here I Stand". If you're a fan of Roseanne Cash or Pat Benatar, you're gonna be a fan of today's guest. Her latest album "Full Moon Rising", explores finding your way through tough times and explores relationships during those tough times. Produced during the confines of Covid 19, it helped her to stay connected to her friends and community. It is my pleasure to introduce Randie O'Neil to the show. Welcome to the show. Singer, Author and Nashville Songwriter Hall of Famer Layng Martine Jr's compositions have been performed by the likes of soul legends The Pointer Sisters, Featherbed frontman Barry Mannilow, Bo Diddley, Reba McEntire, Las Vegas regional sensation Elvis Presley, and Philly correspondant Karl Blau. Now an octogenarian- with over six active decades in the background and just a handful of singles under his own name- 2023 marks Layng's debut album, “Music Man.” The album was produced by his son Tucker Martine, who has brought us records by tons of folks including Bill Frisell, Modest Mouse, Roseanne Cash, Mudhoney, Laura Viers, My Morning Jacket and friend of the show Karl Blau. Today, the two of them visit Low Profile from Tucker's Portland, OR studio Flora Recording and Playback. Layng shares stories about doing landscaping for big band leader Benny Goodman, writing songs “in the air”, accidentally meeting Jerry Lee Lewis, his first attempt at an album that never saw the light of day- produced by Ray Stevens- and how he reacted when he first heard one of his songs recorded by the king of rock and roll, Karl Blau. And there's even a story about Elvis! Meanwhile, Tucker tells of his development in sound engineering and music, and his side of the story behind his dad's first proper album. On this Richard Bennett interview, fantastic stories about working with Mark Knopfler, Neil Diamond, Billy Joel and Marty Stuart… the making of his 7th solo LP, Tall Tale Tunes, and how this got put together, why he doesn't like playing all the instruments on his records, how song ideas come to him. The REAL TRUTH behind how he gets his songs and arrangements to sound so pretty, difference for him being a sideman and playing his own material, most fun he's ever had playing music, and why it's “Never going to be as good as it is in your head…” LOADS of fun and laughs, great convo with a first class guy Cool Guitar, Music & ELG T-Shirts!: http://www.GuitarMerch.com Richard Bennett has been a studio and touring guitarist with Mark Knopfler, since 1994... and he spent 17 years & 12 LPs before that in the same role with Neil Diamond. He's also produced Neil Diamond, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Jo-El Sonnier, Marty Stuart & others. And here's a very small sample of the people he's played with since his first session in 1968: Ringo Starr, Lonnie Donegan, Conway Twitty, Sammy Davis Jr, Johnny Mathis, Roseanne Cash, Ray Price, Waylon Jennings, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight, the Four Tops, Barbara Streisand, Chubby Checker, Glen Campbell, Duane Eddy, T-Bone Walker, Billy Joel, Helen Reddy, Vince Gill, Sheryl Crow, hundreds of others, and about a dozen movie soundtracks including The Wrecking Crew documentary and one of my favorite movies, Westworld Richard just released his 7th solo instrumental LP, called Tall Tales Tunes. The record's beautiful with Richard's finely crafted melodies and arrangements, and his ace guitar playing leading the charge but never overpowering the song. Telling the truth through song and stage, Laurie Middlebrook has wrote her own chapter into the Michigan Music History book. Having been back and forth across the country growing up, it was a guitar left behind that Middlebrook grabbed to find her way to the main stage. In a 30+ music career that has taken her from Freeland to Nashville and back, Middlebrook only released music as she felt ready to do so and never succumbed to the pressure of major labels. Beginning as a country artist, Middlebrook has blossomed into a bonafide Americana artist (think Roseanne Cash) keeping herself away from modern 'Bro' country music. She has raised a family in Mid-Michigan and shares her story for the first time exclusively with the MMHP, also performing on her maiden podcast. Tune in NOW...

Over the course of nearly three years, we at Americana podcast have spoken with a wonderful collective of artists and industry professionals alike about the workings in and of this ever expanding umbrella of music we lovingly refer to as Americana music. Parts of that discussion have at times touched on its history- but we have never really broached the subject of its early days and what that entailed. And who exactly was there at the beginning. With that in mind, we've decided to shake it up a bit and welcome longstanding Americana advocate and friend Rob Bleetstein. Bleetstein in casual circles, is a music lover. A long time ticket collecting, road junkie, band following fan if there ever was one. Which all tracks for an original deadhead mind you- but he's not someone stuck completely in the past either. Driven by just the desire to hear good music- there isn't an artist old or young on the scene that he seemingly doesn't already know about. And if you happen to somehow introduce him to someone he hasn't heard of- he'll send you what can only be described as an essay or a review of his thoughts on their first two records in addition to the direction their heading with their next one. You can't beat him. Professionally, Bleestein's credentials range from publicist, archivist, and currently program director of Pearl Jam Radio on Sirius XM. What he is to Americana as a genre though… well he was one of the early, if not original adopters of the term. From when he worked at Gavin magazine in the 90's. One of the original coiners of the description “Americana”. Rob Bleetstein is not only a music lover- but a true music shaper. So Join us as our host Robert Earl Keen speaks with Rob Bleestetin about the early days of Americana, his experiences as a long-time music lover, his contributions, and what's on the horizon of the genre

Sometimes the story behind a song rivals the song itself & even the transitions between songs become an integral part of a live performance, which is why storytellers are so important to music. This podcast single - running roughly five minutes - could be part of my The Song that Changed My Life series but it's actually part of a one-hour interview with the great Roseanne Cash, in which she and I talk about the "great energy" in the Sun Records studio in Memphis, her father Johnny Cash, the 'Million Dollar Quartet,' and most of all her love for the recording she choose to kick off the radio show, You Don't Know Me, by Ray Charles. I shall do a podcast about Roseanne and her dad, but this one is in memory of Ray and the role he played in redefining country music.

I am with Tucker Martine, one of the world’s best producers and recording engineers. I could read you the list of the people he’s worked with but it would take the rest of the podcast, and that’s only slightly exaggerating. Here are just a few, Roseanne Cash, My Morning Jacket, The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, Don Henley, the Avett Brothers. I could go on but you get the picture. One of his most beloved collaborators is Bill Frisell who comes to Portland to record right here at Flora Recordings and Playback. He’s also a musician and like everyone else right now doing everything he can to keep afloat until we get back to something that resembles normal. Bill Frisell is one of my favorite musicians and so excuse me if I talk too much about him. It’s my podcast. Here’s Tucker Martine.

Richie Cannata shares his journey from playing Sax, keys and percussion with Billy Joel, The Beach Boys and more to overcoming cancer and coming back better than before!! Amazing conversation unpacking true miracles! When you first hear “New York State of Mind” by Billy Joel, a few things stick out in your mind; the fantastic songwriting and musicianship, and THAT solo. The solo that many people can remember note for note that has become part of us. When Richie recorded and performed that solo in 1976 on The “Turnstiles” record, little did he know what that song and that solo would go on to represent for the biggest city in the world.. Richie wrote that solo as a New Yorker, as a Long Islander, and he and his sound is forever ingrained in us. It was the beginning of him playing all those great memorable sax solos on Billy's records, which has added up to being on over 150 million records sold….. Richie was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Ernest and Anna. At the ripe old age of four, he had an attraction to the piano, then at eight, he laid his eyes on his future musical, life long companion, the tenor sax. With incredibly supportive parents, Richie blossomed as a musician, especially after the family moved to Garden City South, Long Island. He played in school bands and in bands with his friends. Wetting his lips and perfecting his trade on the local club scene, Richie began doing studio sessions with a variety of musicians. Until that fateful day in 1975, when Richie was in the studio doing some session work, and the engineer, Al Stegmeyer, recognizing his incredible sound and talent, suggested Richie call his brother Doug. Doug had recently gotten the gig as Billy Joel's bass player, and they were looking for a sax player that also played keys and sang. Richie was that multi-talented musician Billy was looking for. Richie quickly gelled with Billy and the guys, and joined them on the “Turnstiles,” where he would play that amazing solo on New York State of Mind. Billy knew he had something special. Richie would continue to tour throughout the world and perform on albums for many years to come. Performing on multiplatinum records such as “The Stranger,” “52nd Street,” “Glass Houses,” “Songs in The Attic” and even I having musical residuals on “The Nylon Curtain.” It was then that Richie felt it was time to start a family and expand his horizons, performing with different and varied musicians. He went on to become a member of The Beach Boys, playing on their recordings and their successful world tours. He would also go on to perform with Elton John, Celine Dion, Tommy Shaw, Phoebe Snow, Roseanne Cash, Rita Coolidge, Charlie Danials, Vince Gill, and many more. Richie then took a chance in 1985, and opened up “Cove City Sound Studios” in Glen Cove. By bringing his unique musical talents to help other musicians, it put Long Island on the map as a “place to be” for recording for already established musicians. Artists such as Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Billy Joel, Jon Bellion. Chef Special and Jenifer Lopez would pass through ”Cove Sound's” doors. Richie would earn many Grammys and an Oscar. He was also a member of John Stamos' band, “Jesse and The Rippers” on the TV show “Full House,” and continues to this day in his latest position as Musical Director for New York Yankee Bernie Willams and his band. Richie has always been a true Long Islander at heart, living and working there. He is proud of his beautiful family, starting with his wife, Shirlene. Their talented son, Eren and his wife, Kristen, and their children, Ceo Prince Cannata and Lux Leoux Cannata. Richie couldn't be more proud to be the head of his family and watch his grandsons grow up. Richie is a Long Islander in his heart and soul, and forever remains grateful for the way living on Long Island has shaped his life. He was recently inducted to The Long Island Music Hall of Fame with his legendary band …The Lords of 52nd Street Learn about Cove City Sound Studios here http://covecitysoundstudios.com/ For your free guided hypnotic mediation goto www.guidedhypnotic.com

Welcome to the 52nd Anniversary Concert Celebration of Bowie vs. Dylan!!! With your host, David Bowie!!!!! David Bowie: Thanks so much, you're all so lovely! Well, this is grand, isn't it? It's just me and Bob Dylan, together at last for a special tribute to- Backstage Lackey #1: (rushes over discreetly and whispers in Bowie's ear, for, like, a while.) David Bowie: Well, folks, it seems there's been a misunderstanding, I've NOT been invited to perform at long last with Bob and fulfill the secret prophecy of most of the world's religions. (long uncomfortable pause) I'm just here to lend my wonderfully rich voice and presence to the proceedings. It seems no-one, not even my record label, will release me singing or playing anything at all. Just me in tuxedo attire and speaking soothingly as if I was a particular form of sleep aid. Say...that gives me an idea! But anyway, if I wasn't invited to sing, then I guess no-one was. John Mellencamp, Stevie Wonder, Lou Reed, Eddie Vedder, Tracy Chapman, Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Winter, Ron Wood, Richie Havens, Neil Young, Chrissie Hynde, Eric Clapton, The O'Jays, The Band but not Robbie Robertson, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roger McGuinn, The Clancy Brothers, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Roseanne Cash, and Shawn Colvin, and Sinead O'Connor: WE were invited! Bob Dylan: Heeeey, sorry I'm late. I was trying very hard to pretend that I would come by rehearsing and promising to come, but then be so late or have some excuse as to why I had to skip it altogether, but I lost track of how late I wanted to be and accidentally showed up for the at least the last 1/3 of this concert devoted to me. Everyone: Blowin' in the Wind, anyone? On this 1993 edition of Bowie vs. Dylan.
We’re back! Welcome to the second season of Glitter & Doom, where we’ll be exploring artists in isolation. If you’re on Twitter, you might remember a meme-storm in early March after Roseanne Cash tweeted: “Just a reminder that when Shakespeare was quarantined because of the plague, he wrote King Lear.” With the help of Andrew Dickson, author of The Globe Guide to Shakespeare, we try and figure out if Shakespeare actually *did* write King Lear while under quarantine, and which one of Lear’s daughters was the actual, literal worst.

Kirsten marks the sad passing of American folk music legend John Prine, playing lots of his songs and songs by people he influenced. There was a presidential condolence from the president of the Republic of Ireland. Roseanne Cash quotes from John Prine's great song "Angel From Montgomery": "Just give me something I can hold onto." A terrible loss. A lot of great music. He was dealt a rough hand by the Trump administration, passing away from complications of the coronavirus. Thanks for the decades of great songs. RIP.

359 - Keith Sykes Singer-songwriter, guitarist and producer Keith Sykes was a guest on my radio show and it was a pretty in-depth interview. Keith Sykes is someone who has had a lifelong pursuit of being and artist. I remember a past guest saying that a book needed to be written about all of the people whose path crossed with Keith Sykes. Some very fascinating characters who play a part in his story include Jerry Jeff Walker, John Prine, Guy Clark, Jimmy Buffett, Roseanne Cash, Roger Cook and others…most of whom have written songs with him. In the world of Jimmy Buffett, Keith Sykes is known as the writer of Coast of Marseille and the Last Line as well as a co-writer of the song Volcano. He was a touring member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band in 1979. Sykes has released a number of high quality albums that have drawn positive reactions from fans and also his peers. More than 100 of his songs have been recorded by other artists ranging from John Prine, George Thorogood, The Judds, Rodney Crowell, Sunny Sweeney and the aforementioned Jimmy Buffett. Hiking is one of the most popular activities in Bayfield County. Mary Motiff, Director of Bayfield County Tourism talks about why hiking is so popular here and tells us about the new hiking brochure to help plan your hiking adventures. Plus, our guests Marvin Defoe and Richard LeFernier give us a preview of what to expect at the 41st Annual Red Cliff Pow Wow featuring the Grammy-nominated Young Spirit Singers. Hitting the Trails According to Mary, it’s the abundance of public land and the sheer number of trails that traverse all types of geography that make hiking so special in Bayfield County. You can find a waterfall just a few hundred yards from the road or hike more than 20 miles across the county on the North Country Trail. You might find wetlands, islands, overlooks and ravines that provide beautiful vistas. There are “out-and-back” hikes, loop hikes and connected trail hails that let you control how much distance you want to cover. Wherever you are in the county, there are hiking choices nearby! Mary and her staff have just updated their hiking brochure which includes all 39 trails on a map showing where the trailheads are. The information has been developed over the years and is fairly comprehensive. Each trail features a description, its level of difficulty, if parking fees are required and contact information for the land manager for each trail. You can find a printable version on the Travelbayfieldcounty.com website or you can order one to be mailed to you. There is also an interactive map on the website where you can see aerial imagery that allows you to zoom in to see all of the non-motorized trails. 41st Annual Red Cliff Traditional Pow Wow Pow Wows bring people together socialize, dance, sing and celebrate tribal heritage. The Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa has hosted the Red Cliff Traditional Pow Wow for 4 decades and will hold its 41st Pow Wow July 5th through July 7th. Red Cliff Historic Preservation Officer Marvin DeFoe and Richard LeFernier tell us the Pow Wow was started by a family and grew from there. But even before the Pow Wow, Red Cliff and other tribes used music, song and dance to express their culture and way of life. There are special dances that go back to the early days of the Pow Wow. The Fish Dance is a special dance where men tell the story of gathering fish and a good harvest. The Feather Dance is a fun dance where some of the dancers drop a feather to the ground and try to pick it up with their mouth. And in the Swan Dance, the women imitate a flock of swans. These special dances all tell a story and are introduced to the crowd by an emcee. In addition, there is a Potato Dance for the public. Those participating hold a potato between their foreheads with a dancer. When the singing starts, the participants have to dance and try to not let the potato fall down. Marvin says the center of the Pow Wow is the drum, which in the language of the Anishinaabe is the heartbeat that you hear when the drums sing. The younger tribal members are highlighted in a hand drum contest. There are some other contests just focused on having fun. Every Pow Wow starts with a Grand Entry. The Feathers are honored first, followed by the veterans, flags and head dancers who have been invited to come and dance. Other tribes who attend bring their royalty, who are honored next. Each category of dancers and singers follow after that. There are five food vendors at the Red Cliff Pow Wow and Richard and his family have one of them. They serve traditional food like Fry Bread and wild rice soup. There are also craft vendors from the local area and from across the nation. According to both men, the Pow Wow is also about giving. They give gifts to their invited dancers and singers to help with travel expenses and include them in a feast on Saturday evening. The Pow Wow is open to everyone – just purchase a button for $7 when you arrive and that allows you to come and go as you please during the 3-day event. Golf cart shuttles are available to and from the parking lots if needed. For more information, visit the Red Cliff website at http://redcliff-nsn.gov/Tourism/powwow.htm. Con Love Is The Bridge Between Two Hearts, Heidi Talbot y John McCusker han creado algo que suena fresco y hermoso. Si este EP sirve como aperitivo, entonces, por mi parte, no puedo más que esperar un plato principal mucho más largo.
My guest this week is one of my very favorite musicians, Joe Henry. His brother Dave was one of my first guests on this show, and I was thrilled when Joe agreed to take part as well. He’s just released his fourteenth studio album, called “Thrum,” and he’s also produced records for a lot of amazing musicians, including Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Ani DiFranco, and Allen Toussaint. He’s co-written songs with Roseanne Cash and with Madonna -- who happens to be his sister-in-law.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an auto-immune disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. No fun. However, Diane Hardin is fun, and manages to cover the topic of her MS with humor and wisdom, without spilling her martini. We cover a wide range of material, from the causes and symptoms of MS, to Roseanne Cash, "blood patches," and Air Force training films. In other words, we jump around Diane's brain as if it were being rewired by lesions forming on it (wait, maybe it is...)
This week we’re joined by Jim Hanke from Vinyl Emergency to explore all of the strange, cool and unusual designs found in classic and current albums. We cover everything from edible EPs to covers featuring pictures of pants with fully working zippers (even if it did sort of ruin the physical album inside.) Jim brings his fantastic wealth of information, while Michael and Richard team up with stuff they found on Wikipedia. Who will win? Only Jeff knows, but honestly, the answer is pretty obvious. Make sure you follow Vinyl Emergency on Twitter and Facebook along with checking out his show, where he has interviewed big shots including Matthew Sweet and Roseanne Cash. Garland and Lee will discuss allegations of Russian “meddling” via “fake news” in Catalonia, Germany, France, the UK and the US. The hosts and guests will also discuss Donald Trump's visit to Puerto Rico yesterday, and ongoing controversy about relief efforts. Scheduled guests include: Robin Respaut; Tim Black; and Irene Vilar; as well as reports from Puerto Rico.
My guest today is Mr. John Leventhal. John is a guitarist, songwriter and producer, having won 5 Grammys and 16 nominations for records he has produced. (I may be incorrect about this, it might actually be more…) As usual on the Riff Raff, I have “selfish” ulterior motives and tend to interview people who were influential to me as a guitarist/producer and John is at the top of that list. He was a big influence on the way I approach working with singers and in the studio. His uncoventional approachs to folk, country and rock/pop genres is hard to pin down and that's exactly why I like his sound so much. John is married to Roseanne Cash, an amazing singer/songwriter and the daughter of country legend Johnny Cash. (For this interview I get to play one of Johnny Cash's guitars!) In this interview we discuss guitars, producing, working with singers, songwriting, alternate tunings, his early career, “letting go” of preconceived ideas, the importance of good time, and much more. We also do quite a bit of playing and you get to hear John do his thing. There is some really great gems at the end so if you are a fan of John's we were really just getting going.... This interview took place on a snowy day at John's studio in New York City, March 2017.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-riff-raff-with-shane-theriot/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
A Bishop, a money-lender and a car mechanic walk into a bar.......and so we wonder what sort of hilarity may ensue with the punch line to come. But tonight on Windy City Irish Radio, we are treated to just that scenario as Mike and Tim welcome esteemed Chicago actor, Peter Bradley Armacost, into the studio to discuss his many current rolls on stage and screen. Brad is awfully busy these days portraying characters in the ghostly realm and channeling the words of some of our greatest playwrights. As Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol at the Drury Lane, Brad plays Dickens' curmudgeonly miser with aplomb, portraying his journey to redemption with the help of haunted visitors of his past, present, and future. Bah Humbug, indeed! In his role as Chicago's Bishop Egan in The Exorcist FOX each Friday night on our television, we learn very quickly that Satan takes no holiday! Finally, in his role as Jack in Conor McPherson's triumphant play, The Weir, Brad reprises the role that won him a Jeff Award in 2010. Irish Theatre of Chicago's presentation of The Weir opens on December 17 and runs into January. Attending this show is the ONLY way to hear the ending of the oh-so-spooky tale that Brad weaves on tonight's show. With music from Nanci Griffith, Séamus Begley / Oisín Mac Diarmada / Samantha Harvey, Roseanne Cash with Welshman Tom Jones and Catriona O'Leary, a new one from Offaly's JigJam, The High Kings, The Saw Doctors and Cathie Ryan, this show, like most of Brad's work, is a must listen! Best known for singing a string of successful trucking-themed country songs in the 1960s and 70s, Red Simpson was also a highly influential behind-the-scenes songwriter from Bakersfield, California. Buck Owens recorded more than 30 Simpson originals, including the Top 10 hits “Gonna Have Love,” “Sam’s Place,” and “Kansas City Song.” Additionally, Red penned perennial standards, such as “Close Up the Honky Tonks” and “You Don’t Have Very Far to Go.” As an artist, he released a total of seven albums for Capitol and logged seven charting singles onBillboard’s country rankings, including the Top 40 hits “Roll Truck Roll” and “The Highway Patrol.” He is perhaps best known, however, for singing “I’m a Truck,” which hit the Top 5 in 1972. Simpson played guitar on most of Buck Owens’ recording dates in the mid-1960s, including sessions that produced hits such as “Buckaroo” and “Waitin’ in Your Welfare Line.” He went on to play numerous sessions with Merle Haggard, who referred to Simpson as a “hillbilly hippy.” Merle recorded a couple of Simpson originals on his 1969 album Pride in What I Am, and Red went on to play guitar on Haggard’s classic live LP, Okie From Muskogee. A half dozen other Simpson compositions have been recorded by Haggard, who wrote “A Bar in Bakersfield” in tribute to his old friend. As a songwriter, Simpson enjoyed additional charting singles by Charlie Walker, Wynn Stewart, Junior Brown, and others. His songs have also been recorded by Ferlin Husky, Johnny Paycheck, Wanda Jackson, The Byrds, Gram Parsons, Dave Dudley, Roy Clark, Roseanne Cash, Steve Wariner, Lucinda Williams, Alan Jackson, Candi Staton, Dwight Yoakam, and many more. Simpson died on January 8, 2016. This is the final in-depth interview with the California country mainstay Bob Dylan once called "the forgotten man of the Bakersfield Sound."

About "STEVE CONTE NYC" Steve Conte has been one busy musician over the past few years. After leaving New York Dolls in 2010 he joined up with former Hanoi Rocks front man Michael Monroe as guitarist, songwriter and backing vocalist to release 3 albums, the most recent of which – Horns And Halos, 2013 Spinefarm Records – he wrote the lion’s share of the songs for (it’s already been nominated for “Album Of The Year” by the Finnish Grammys and The Nordic Music Prize). In the summer of 2011, in between touring with Monroe he began work on what was to be his first official solo album, naming the project “Steve Conte NYC”.And now in 2014, after years of making records with others, NYC guitarist/singer/songwriter Steve Conte has stepped out on his own to release The Steve Conte NYC Album. His first official solo record delivers all the guitar, vocal and songwriting skills you know from his previous bands; Steve Conte & The Crazy Truth, Crown Jewels, The Contes and Company Of Wolves. And that “bunch of friends” includes some serious talent. Joining Steve are members of Foo Fighters, The Wildhearts, New York Dolls, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Hanoi Rocks, Georgia Satellites, Alice Cooper, Mink DeVille, Hellacopters, The Urban Voodoo Machine, Mott The Hoople, Backyard Babies, The Wallflowers, Company Of Wolves, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, and players from the bands of Ian Hunter, John Mellencamp, Roseanne Cash and Bruce Springsteen. The new album was mixed and mastered by Niko Bolas (Neil Young, Keith Richards) and Richard Dodd (Tom Petty, Counting Crows), respectively – the same team who did the 2009 release, Steve Conte & The Crazy Truth. http://stevecontenyc.com

For the January, 2014 broadcast of Word By Word: Conversations With Writers brothers Joe and David Henry join host Gil Mansergh to talk about their biography, Furious Cool: Richard Pryor and the World That Made Him. Joe is a singer songwriter who broke into the business as a Production Associate for Spinal Tap, the iconic band that never really was. Married since 1987 to Melanie Ciccone, Joe has penned songs for Madonna, Madeline Peyroux and Roseanne Cash. A Grammy-winning record producer, he has created albums with Louden Wainwright III, Elvis Costello, Aimee Mann, Mose Allison, Bonnie Raitt and Hugh Laurie (yes, that Hugh Laurie). David is an author, screenwriter and video & broadcast producer who lives in Louisville, Kentucky. David’s most recent screenplay, co-written with Archie Borders, is Pleased to Meet Me, based on Starlee Kine’s radio story “Everyone Speaks Elton John.” Topics range from Richard Pryor’s demons, to the “salad-making” skills of Bob Dylan and Joan Rivers, to Joe and Bob’s favorite Richard Pryor movies to what a music producer actually does. In short, one of those interesting and eclectic conversations with writers for which Word by Word is famous.
BLACKIE AND THE RODEO KINGS originally formed in 1996. Now into their second decade and with one JUNO award and several JUNO nominations under their belts, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings has organically evolved into one of the finest roots-oriented bands in North America. They have released seven CDs and gradually developed a feeling of brotherhood manifested in a sense of groove, timberal blend and melodic and rhythmic play that is distinctive, mystical, energizing and constantly evocative. Blackie and the Rodeo Kings remains one of Canada's greatest musical treasures. Their latest CD is 'Kings and Queens' and pairs the band with some of their favorite female singers and friends including Roseanne Cash, Emmylou Harris, Janiva Magness, Lucinda Williams and more. FOLK UKE is an eclectic acoustic folk duo comprised of Cathy Guthrie and Amy Nelson featuring perfectly melded harmonies and sharp, often biting wit. The daughters of two great American songwriters (Arlo and Willie), the two were musical holdouts until they gave into the force and began writing and playing music together a decade ago. Armed with a ukulele and a guitar, this duo is a unique amalgam of angelic harmonies often wrapped around edgy, surprising lyrics. Check out YouTube for some of their more provocative songs. Folk Uke plays folk music in its truest form with a delightfully wicked twist. The duo's latest album is "Reincarnation."
Today we pay tribute to Blaze Foley & Gurf Morlix, as well as visits with Greg Brown and the Thompson family. For hour 2, it’s a Johnny Cash Birthday Bash, as The Man in Black would have turned 80 today, and that’s reason enough to celebrate his (ever)lasting musical legacy.
