Joe Henry from Lake of the Woods Tourism is on the show to highlight the great fishing opportunities on lake of the woods and the surrounding area. It's the season of opportunity up there as the late ice patterns for giant pike notoriously happens this time of year, any day now the rainy river will open up for boats at which time our social media feeds will be littered with pictures of giant walleyes and sturgeon from this location. It's easy to appreciate Joe as he does the best job explaining the history of these opportunities and why many top anglers set aside this time every year to head to the rainy river in search of adventure and trophy fish.Lake Of The Woods - https://lakeofthewoodsmn.comTKI CNC - https://www.youtube.com/@tkicnc6255www.tkicnc.comZulauf Construction - https://www.zulaufconstruction.com701-630-0197Ships Wheel Resort - https://www.shipswheelresort.comTwin Island Sleepers - https://www.twinislandsleepers.comSummit Fishing Equipment - https://summitfishingequipment.comOnX Fish - https://www.onxmaps.com/fish/appRisovi Taxidermy Studio - www.risovitaxidermystudio.comWebsite - www.jmopodcast.comFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/JMOFishingPodcastInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/the_jmopodcast/

You probably know Gary Louris as the leader of The Jayhawks – or as they refer to themselves, “a band from Minnesota.” The Jayhawks are pioneers of roots rock, alt-country, and Americana. Whatever you wanna call it, they've been making records where rock, pop, country, and other forms of American roots music overlap since the mid-1980s.But Louris's hidden superpower is that he's kind of like a musical Swiss Army knife – he's basically got a creative skill for any application. Want him and his band to serve as accompanists for some of the most distinctive singer-songwriters, like Wesley Stage and Joe Henry? He can do that. Looking for achingly-perfect, near-fraternal harmonies on hit songs like Counting Crows' “Mr. Jones”? He can (and did) do that. If you're the Tedeschi Trucks Band or The Chicks and you're looking for someone to write you some catchy, melodic, roots-pop songs? Gary's your guy. If that's not enough, he has also produced records for artists like Dar Williams, The Sadies, and The Jayhawks, too. Whatever your musical need may be, chances are that Gary Louris can do it.In between all these varied musical roles, Louris has also found time to release several solo albums, the newest of which – 'Dark Country' – was released earlier this month. He recorded it mostly solo in his home studio and the word on the street is that this collection of songs, inspired by his wife, is his most intimate and romantic album yet. I've been a big fan of Gary Louris for basically my entire adult life and enjoyed our wide-ranging Basic Folk conversation, touching on the way technical limitations can shape an artist's style, what he's learned from a career's-worth of collaborations, his process working on his new solo album, the relationship between versatility and longevity, and what the influence of romance on his songwriting looks like now, in the fifth decade of his music career.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Interested in sponsoring us? Only similar sounds I've ever heard is bigger birds wings. I looked no birds anywhere no turkeys roosting in trees for the night. The sun was setting at this point. I didn't see anything but it was real close. My only other thought cause a bunch of neighboring property dogs were all fired up a few minutes earlier and they had settled down just before I heard it. Never heard bobcat hiss in person but at that point since they are in that area is all I could think and why the dogs were fired up. So I hurried the hell out of there. When I got to the parking lot and not another car in sight. I set up, soaking clams on two rods before sun-up. As the pre-dawn light began to show over the horizon, a THICK bank of fog rolled in. Slack tide and zero wind…very peaceful but not expecting anything spectacular. Suddenly, about 500 seagulls that had been resting on the roof of the bath house lifted into the air and began to dive nosily into the surf. The fog was so thick I couldn't see them, but I could hear them, not 20 yards off the beach. Figuring a blitz of snappers, I sent a 3-ounce Yo-Zuri popper into the fog and immediately came tight on what turned out to be a 12lb Albie. As I was fighting this fish, the fog began to lift and I could see I was surrounded by 25 to 30 other surfcasters. I had no clue how they suddenly appeared as this stretch of beach is wide open, so I would have seen them before the fog came in. No one spoke and the only sounds were screaming gulls and drags as we all enjoyed a rare mix of blues and albies for the next 30 minutes in a classic fall blitz. As the action died down, the fog rolled in again and I appeared to be all alone again. Since I was tired and a little spooked by the mornings events, I packed up my gear and headed back to the parking lot. Just like when I arrived, mine was the only car there. I have no idea where the other fishermen came from or how they disappeared and to this day, I'm not entirely convinced they were actually there. https://onthewater.com/spooky-fishing-stories   Aliens prefer fishers:   Pascagoula UFO Abduction  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascagoula_Abduction   See Entry 12:  https://skepticalinquirer.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/29/2019/03/SI-MJ-12.pdf   Charles Hickson 42 Calvin Parker 19  Went fishing on the Pascagoula River Mississippi October 11th 1973     On the evening of October 11, 1973, 42-year old Charles Hickson and 19-year-old Calvin Parker went fishing on the west bank of the Pascagoula River.  As dusk fell, they heard a whirring/whizzing sound and saw flashes of blue light on the water.  They looked up to see an oval-shaped object approximately 30-40 feet across and 8-10 feet high.  Three creatures came gliding out of the craft and took them aboard.  Completely paralyzed but still conscious, the two men were subjected to a medical exam by a giant robotic eye.  They were then returned to shore, and the craft sped away into the night sky.    Both changed their stories over time.  Parker said he passed out but later claimed to remember certain details.  Hickson kept altering his story. Originally from Devon, the English singer-songwriter John Smith got his start playing bars and clubs in Liverpool, both with his own songs and as a side player for artists like Lianne La Havas, Lisa Hannigan and David Gray. Growing up with folk music and guitar music influences from Eric Clapton to Maria Callas to Nick Drake, John's sensitivity as a player is one of the cornerstones of his music, especially when it comes to his live music. It's earned him a passionate fanbase ever since his first EP release in 2009. I (lizzie) got to witness the connection he shares with audiences on a recent month-long tour around the UK. Everywhere we went, audience members had stories of how important John's songs were to them, and guitar nerds flocked to have a look at his pedal board.Beyond his musicianship, John's music is imbued with an earnestness that invites listeners to look around and feel gratitude: for nature (especially the vistas of rural England), for the wisdom that memory can provide, and for the people close to us. John's latest album, ‘The Living Kind,' is a meditation on how delicate love and life can be, but also how enduring. It also showcases the creative partnership between Smith and his longtime friend and roots music industry icon Joe Henry. One of the album's highlights is “Milestones,” in which John reflects on how parenthood has changed his perspective on the artist's life.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Interested in sponsoring us? Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

Welcome back to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions, our weekly series of illuminating interviews and contextual conversations. This week on the show, guitarist and composer Julian Lage.  A child prodigy in his youth, Lage has commanded attention for decades for his guitar prowess—he performed at the GRAMMYs at the tender age of 12—and he's accompanied a truly staggering roster of artists over the years, including John Zorn, Nels Cline, Bill Frisell, Yoko Ono, Gary Burton, and more. But on his latest album, the Blue Note release Speak To Me, Lage often presents himself as something of a singer/songwriter—minus the singing, that is. Joined by a five-piece band and producer Joe Henry, Lage careens from jittery free jazz to classic West Coast pop, maintaining a careful flow that feels generous but considered, diverse but not haphazard.   This week on Transmissions, he discusses connecting to his musical center, cutting himself some slack, and how Henry helped him know when songs were "done enough." Transmissions is a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Visit the Talkhouse for more interviews, fascinating reads, and podcasts. Next week on Transmissions? Jeff Tweedy of Wilco joins us for a wide ranging conversation about Solid Sound, his books, and his Jim O'Rourke side project Loose Fur.

We had the pleasure of interviewing John Smith over Zoom video!Though he was dubbed the future of folk music by Pentangle's John Renbourn, singer-songwriter John Smith's unique synthesis of styles puts him halfway across the Atlantic. He once made an album driving round the Deep South, recording out of the boot of his car; but his new record The Living Kindis the real masterpiece in American atmospherics – a true musician's record, produced by Joe Henry, the man responsible for some of the subtlest Americana of recent times. At the start of 2022 they cooked up the idea for an intimate record together – “an acoustic album that sounded like Spirit of Eden”, Smith explains, referencing Talk Talk's 1988 classic. Along with John Martyn's Solid Air and Joni Mitchell's electro-acoustic odyssey Hejira, it was one of the three creative inspirations for The Living Kind.Like Hejira, the new album is a cohesive song-cycle that seems to be cast in one rich tone-colour, one powerful mood. At the start of the Covid pandemic, Smith's family suffered a cluster of personal crises in the space of three months. His mother began radiotherapy for breast cancer, his father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and his wife lost a pregnancy which also endangered her life. The couple, who have a young daughter, sold their house in Sussex and relocated his parents from Spain to a new home, for treatment. After that, as he sings in his first single The World Turns, Smith had to “find a new way to feel”.Most of the songs were written in the space of just two months over Christmas last year: The Living Kind is an album made after, not in the midst, of a period of personal turmoil. It gets you right in the chest – the opener,Candle, captures the overwhelming strain of his father's diagnosis – but in its self-possession and curious positivity it feels like the culmination of many personal evolutions. The Living Kind owes much of its precision and confidence to its unique recording circumstances: it was cut over just four days in February 2023, in Joe Henry's remote home in Harpswell, Maine. With temperatures dropping to -25 outside, the band – a tight trio consisting of Henry's son Levon and bassist Ross Gallagher – didn't leave the house at all. You can hear the closeness, darkness and warmth in the new songs – the hunkeredness, the cocoon. It was the first live recording made in Joe's new “music room”, a space above the garage, and cutting a record there was a leap of faith as it was completely un-soundproofed: “if a truck came by, you'd have to stop recording”.But Henry's organic and spontaneous way of working has revolutionized Smith's own. Writing on his 1963 Martin and a new Mulecaster steel guitar, Smith tends to be led where his instrument takes him. He's always played acoustic guitars with pickups inside, and enhances the rich, three-dimensional sounds with an EBow: a vibrating magnet held above a guitar string, which produces a theremin-like wail. The Living Kind is an album from someone lucky enough to have the gift of music to help put life's greatest challenges into some kind of perspective: “I do feel without my guitar and without song-writing I would have lost my mind, many times” Smith says. Henry detected something new in his singing, a lack of self-consciousness, closer to live performance than he had ever heard him in the studio. We want to hear from you!
