We're coming at you this week from the time machine, so we just found out about the Pope and how JD Vance probably caused him to keel over. It's a Carriage House Catch-Up as (Bryan) preps for his European vacation extravaganza. But before he hops the pond, he and Ronna answer questions on how to support a newly out brother and how to navigate some family drama regarding birthday planning. As always, thanks for listening...especially the Catholics and the Czechs! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week we're talking about Renny Harlin's The Exorcist: The Beginning because we're contractually obligated to due to the format of the show. Mike and Stephen are here to talk about hot moms, the 1995 coming of age movie Angus, (featuring not one but TWO Oscar winners), the Angus soundtrack, what makes up the weakest entry in the Back to the Future series, whether or not Paul Schrader directed Clifford the Big Red Dog, the latest addition to our soundboard and so much more. All right, we talk about the movie a little bit, and ask the question whether it is better to be a serviceable, feels like it's made for television feature, or a wild swing and massive miss like The Heretic? Plus, we ask the question: Has there ever been a successful exorcism in any of The Exorcist movies? Ultimately, The Beginning is “The Goofus” to Dominion's “Gallant”: a big, dumb, spectacle of a movie with poorly rendered, early aughts CGI that passes a couple hours but has all the lasting power of a stick of Juicy Fruit gum. Send us a textAdvertising. Even just saying the word makes people roll their eyes, since the culture has managed to find ways to cram ads into every bloody crevice in the universe now. We even pay extra just to skip them a lot of the time. But it wasn't always that way, was it? Back in the last golden age of advertising (in the '80s and '90s, which was basically the last best time for everything pop-cultural), ads were actually a form of entertainment in and of themselves. In this edition of FYF, Saint and Jim take a look back at the retro ads of their youth, which — despite being little but crass marketing — still have the ability to evoke a very specific brand of nostalgia. So get your skis shined up, grab a stick of Juicy Fruit, and put this in your earholes.

CULTIVATING COUNTERCULTURE KINDNESS - Pastor Michelle Gage Wherever we look, it seems that kindness is in limited supply. Whether it's social media, political tensions, or constant hurry, we live in a culture that is often unkind. Though kindness is not in season right now, it's always in season in the Fruit of the Spirit! And even when we don't feel like being kind, we can learn from God, who is lavishly kind to His children. #kindness #rethinklifechurch #TheWinningFamily #lakenona #stcloud #orlando #2024sermon #onlinechurch #rodneygage #michellegage #fruitsofthespirit #Jesus #Church #Hope Thank you RTL Fam for your generosity! Gentleness and Kindness might seem like obvious traits to operate in but there is something deeper in how God views these fruits. People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. No matter how much we know about Jesus, it is not until we can look like Him, act like Him and be like Him that we will see them respond to Him through our lives. It is very common in our day and age to claim something and not live it but people are simply wanting us to live out what we are speaking about. The gentleness & kindness that we display in our relationships will truly determine how people view the love of God.Nothing the Lord does is accidental or unintentional so why does He ask us to walk in these attributes? God asks us to walk in meekness and humility (gentleness) and grace and integrity (kindness), because as a society we get so focused on having a right to do something but we need to be more concerned about doing what is right in the Lord's eyes. There are moments we think we have the right to be angry or the right to walk in our flesh but the bible encourages us to lay down our lives and pick up our crosses. 1) We can do the right things on paper but people discern if our hearts were joyful in the action. 2) If something is a part of our personalities, we have the power to change it. 3) Being kind and gentle will always give God all the glory. There is an aspect of living this life that God is calling us to give without expecting anything in return. The Fruit of the Spirit allows us to to live a life surrendered to the service of others, without manipulation or expectation. The world is often telling us that it's good to be nice but Jesus isn't just telling us to be nice to one another, He is asking us to ultimately love our enemy as an act of ultimate obedience to God. God has already paid the price for the broken people of this world, all He asks of us is to be a group of people that would tend to their wounds and help restore them back to who He calls them to be! Application: What are some ways that you can start to operate in gentleness and kindness in the relationships and human interactions you come across daily? Prayer: Father, I pray that I will be gentle and kind in all circumstances. I long to love on the broken people of this world as a service unto you. Break my heart for what breaks yours and allow me to be an open vessel of your love today!
When Jesus walked through the earth He did so with the intention of being an example for how to live life with the Spirit. The fruit of our spirit is not something that just appears during times of trouble but cultivated daily so that people around us will be able to have access to someone that has joy, peace, kindness, faithfulness and so forth. Apostle Paul tells us in Galatians that there is a constant battle between the flesh and the spirit and all of us Christians should try our best to live by the spirit and not by the flesh. When we think about faithfulness it can be broken down into a simple equation of Faithfulness being a result of character, stewardship and longevity. These three things being different from those that are out there in the world will help people identify that we carry the faithful love of Jesus. 1. Character is not something that is a front but it is who you are in every aspect of our lives, both seen and unseen. It's what allows us to live life with integrity. 2. Stewardship requires us to act in obedience and not in comparison. Each of us has been given a portion and we are expected to multiply that portion based on our time, talent and treasure. 3. Longevity requires us to see things through consistently over an extended period of time. It's being able to tap into a supernatural source to go through life without burning out. We are not called to be perfect and we should never allow that to discourage us but everyday of this life we should be trying to look more like Jesus. We are called to live a life that is not easily discredited and the good news is that we can. So what does the fruit of faithfulness look like in our lives? Maybe it's us just making it into church through tough circumstances, maybe it's worshiping God through some painful moments. Jesus is faithful to us despite our unfaithfulness and He has given us the ability to do the same!Application: Is there an area of your character, how you steward or your ability to endure that can be worked on today? Prayer: Father, I long to be a faithful follower of your will and your word. I understand that it is easy to give into our flesh and ask for things that we want but more than the desires of my flesh I long to live a life that is worthy of you. Help me endure in faithfulness and help me develop my character, become a good steward of these resources and to have longevity in this race! In Jesus name Amen

What historical significance does Ohio's 55th-largest city hold within the CPG industry? The small town of Troy was the location where the first UPC was scanned at checkout. But the Final Jeopardy level question surrounds which product was the first to be scanned 50 years ago? Legend has it that Wrigley's Juicy Fruit chewing gum was selected because nobody had been sure that a bar code could be printed on something that small. But the theorical conceptualization of this grocery technology might be credited to another Ohio company. In a 1966 document, Kroger stated “just dreaming a little, but could an optical scanner read the price and total the sale…thus creating more productive service.” Beyond speeding up checkouts, UPC's greatest value might be that it has provided hard, statistical evidence for what sells…thus transforming market research. Many times in the Bible we have examples of Jesus was walking through life and walking through crowds. It's not that he was lazy but he was trying to model a lifestyle where we get to work out of a place of patience and rest. When we pray, “God I want all that you have for me.” Do we consider what that statement means? We like to think that if things are good they are from God but there are moments that God allows opposition to slow us down. Opposition can feel like it was sent to destroy us but in fact the Lord allows those things to develop us. Instead of being angry at God we need to start getting a perspective that the attack is a compliment that we are going in the right direction in life. Patience encourages us to: 1. Be faithful in what we're doing. 2. To trust God especially when we don't understand. 3. To pursue God and operate out of a place of rest. If we can be present and wait for what God has for us we will find that a lifestyle of rest in Jesus which will ultimately yield the greatest form of trust. When we continue to rush through life it shows our lack of contentment but God is longing to change all of that. Our situations can be a lot but it does not give us the permission to doubt and curse God, instead through patience we can praise Him every step of the way. Application: How do we begin to trust God when the waiting has been more than just one night? Do we understand that God is not done with us yet? Prayer: Father I pray that you give me patience to go through this life. I understand that in this season you are developing me and making me whole. I long to trust you without doubts plaguing me and I pray that I will fix my eyes solely on you and not the things of this life! In jesus name, amen!
Jesus walks through the garden of our lives and he reaches in to see if there is fruit. Sometimes we advertise that we are fruit bearing believers but when the Lord looks for it, He might not find anything. God prunes us because that is a part of Him extending His grace towards us. God is constantly trying to remind us of how far we have come, especially if we've allowed life to make us stingy with our praise and generosity! God didn't need Mary's worship just like He doesn't need one more voice to fill the choir of heaven, but He honored Mary because she understood what time it was and who it was that she was honoring. If everything in this life belongs to God, there is absolutely nothing that did not come from the generosity of God including the breath in our lungs. With this resource all He is asking is that we take care of His bride and we as believers will take care of what he loves the most for the following reasons: 1) How much we've been loved will determine how much we love. 2) It's not that we don't have a seed to sow, it's that most of us are sowing it in the wrong place. 3) God doesn't want our money, He is only after our hearts!Stewardship is all a test and God is looking for people that are willing to trust him with taking care of their lives. If we sow our seed in the right soil it produces a tree that produces fruit that continue to carry seeds. When we sow something it gives it the potential to bear fruit that will continue to bless us in the future. So if we want more seed in our lives, let's begin to sow what we have into God and all that He loves. Our God did not hold back when He gave all of heaven to save us so in return, let's become a group of people that give him everything!
There comes a point in life when we realize that we cannot control anyone other than ourselves and we need to develop our weaknesses into strengths. If our self control starts in our minds then we need to become masters of what thought patterns are cycling through them and by living out the fruit of the spirit, its evidence will convict those around us! Sometimes the things we choose to do might not be sinful but we do need to ask the question if it was helpful or beneficial. We need to live to a standard that raises the people around us also to a new level. We need to look at every area of our lives when it comes to discipline because everything we have been given is for others and not for us. 1. Self control and discipline is a way we get to honor God. 2. Discipline in one area will bleed into other areas. 3. There are consequences to a lack of self control and can cost you your call We need to take ownership and authority over our minds, our mouths and our actions. If we are more concerned about what people see instead of what God sees we have completely missed the point. If we continue to live a life that pleases our sinful nature eventually it ends up feeling right. But the Bible doesn't tell us to follow our flesh, it asks us to crucify it and we need to be people who pursue that discipline till the end. Jesus himself displayed the greatest moment of self control by dying on the cross for us and He did so that we have a model to look at as we are on this journey! Application: What are some areas that you lack self control that you need to be made obedient to Christ? Prayer: Father I ask that you help me self control and discipline. I long to please you in every area of my life so I ask that you help me strengthen and work on my weaknesses so that I continue to look like you!
The Numinous Podcast with Carmen Spagnola: Intuition, Spirituality and the Mystery of Life
If you're a 35 - 55 year old woman, you grew up in the very particular cultural landscape of the pre-#MeToo era. You grew up with boy-centered stories like The Outsiders, Stand By Me, Goonies and The Lost Boys, the everyday male violence and misogyny of entertainers like Andrew Dice Clay and Sam Kinison, and hypersexualized movies and music like Porky's and "Me So Horny" – LOTS TO UNPACK THERE. Time to revisit and tell our own stories. Emelia Symington Fedy's memoir, Skid Dogs, is a brave, bittersweet coming-of-age story about a group of high school girls in the '90s navigating friendship, sex, and parents from the retrospective view of a now 30-something woman supporting her mother's cancer journey. Content Warning: We're talking about rape culture, sexual assault, and gender-based violence in this episode, the impacts still felt decades on, and the process of sexual healing as middle aged women. We also get a little explicit with the language so…headphones highly recommended! This is a raw and riveting coming-of-age story about the wild love of teenage friendships and the casual oppression of 90s rape culture, and to be honest it was so searingly accurate I had to wait a minute and gather myself before I invited @emeliasf to come on the show to discuss it. Publisher's Weekly describes it this way: “With plenty of Juicy Fruit, padded bras, and pot smoke, the narrative begins as a nostalgia-tinted reverie before evolving into a devastating portrait of the pre-#MeToo era from someone on the other side of it. The author's candor and courage will move readers regardless of when or where they came of age.” Buy Skid Dogs at your favourite local bookseller or the alternative. Pastor Benjamin Houpe continues our "Evidence" series as we look at the rest of the fruit of the Spirit.
Like a good piece of juicy fruit.
We could not be more excited to be joined this week by Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney! We talk about Portland, including our memorable brunch with Carrie, fantastic dinner with Corin, indie rock tour with Corin's husband Lance Bangs and the current state of the food scene in the country's hippest city. Vanessa also bonds with Carrie over their shared love of "basic" fashions, we discuss record collecting on tour and why ordering clothes online is often disappointing. Finally we dig deep into the iconic '80s Juicy Fruit gum commercials which combined a catchy song, extreme sports and Olympic level athleticism into a deep desire to have some artificially flavored pineapple (or mango?) gum. Finally, we convince Carrie and Corin to play a round of CHANGE.DORK where we debate changing the name of cheesecake to cheese pie, making Harrison Ford the face of Hanukkah and if the legendary American Football house should have its emo legacy updated to include the time that Sleater-Kinney potentially played a half-pipe there a long time ago. Don't forget to check out Sleater-Kinney's brand new album "Little Rope," which comes out on January19th! You can pre-order the album HERE and check them out on tour this spring if you know what's good for you!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
