Frances O'Grady is the General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the UK's umbrella group for unions, representing millions of workers. She is the first woman in the 154 year history of the TUC to hold this post, which she took up in 2013. Frances is the youngest of five children, and was brought up in Oxford. Her family has strong links with the trade union movement: her great grandfather and grandfather were founder members of the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union, and her father was a shop steward at the British Leyland plant in Cowley. Thanks to strong encouragement from one of her teachers, Frances was the first of her family to go to university, studying History and Politics at Manchester. After graduation, she moved to London and worked in shops and the hospitality industry, becoming a union rep before getting a job at the Transport and General Workers Union. She joined the TUC in 1994 as Campaigns Secretary, became Deputy General Secretary in 2003 and General Secretary a decade later. In 2020, during the pandemic, she worked with the government on the furlough scheme, providing support for workers whose usual employment. In April 2022, she announced that she would step down from her post at the end of this year. In this episode we focus on the intellectual father of Irish left and one of the founding figures of the Irish Republic, James Connolly. Born in poverty in an Irish slum in Edinburgh to famine refugee parents he experienced the reality of industrial capitalism from an early age. During a relatively short life of 48 years; he would help found the Scottish Labour movement; codified Irish Republican Socialism; was an organiser in New York for the International Workers of the World; was one of the leaders of the Irish Transport and General Workers Union during the 1913 Strike and Lockout; wrote the first working class history of the Irish people; and founded and led the Irish Citizen Army in the 1916 Easter Rising.... and those were just some of the highlights of his political life! Given his huge importance and the breadth of his life we very much encourage listeners to peruse the links below for more on his life: https://youtu.be/mKrncZAqfE0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2t3Q02pZE_I&t=582s&ab_channel=RepublicanNetworkforUnity https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tqGknooC9g&ab_channel=TerryMcMahon

Francis Devine and Fergus Russell perform ballads and songs of the 1913 Lockout. Devine's accompanying historical commentary gives the background of the Lockout and the songs featured. Recorded by Dublin Community Television on 2 April 2013 as part of the City Hall Springtime Lecture series. The Lockout 1913 inspired many poems, ballads, songs and rhymes. Many of which were published in The Irish Worker. These poems and ballads provide a vivid portrait of the conditions faced by Dubliners during the Lockout, the battle between the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union and the Dublin Employers’ Federation and the key personalities of the time.

Trade unions have been active in Timor Leste since 2001 when the Timor Leste Confederation of Trade Unions (KSTL) was formed with support from Australian unions. The major employer at the time was the United Nations and the young country was still under UN administration. Aside from very high unemployment and a government eager to attract foreign investment often at the expense of workers' rights, unions have also been at the forefront of struggles for oil and gas justice in the Timor Sea. Almerio Vila Nova is the General Secretary of the General Workers Union of Timor Leste and represents the younger generation of union activists trying to organise in very challenging economic and political conditions. He shares stories from current and historical industrial struggles as well as some experiences within the clandestine movement as a teenager. The interview has been translated from Tetum so the english translation is voiced by Mark Tyler.
