I have to start off by apologizing, as I'll actually be stepping back in the computer timeline for this episode.  Sometimes it happens.  My goal from the beginning of this podcast was to go through computers in the approximate order they were released (at least by year).  And, I've largely done that with this podcast.  However, sometimes a machine comes up that I didn't know about or didn't recognize its importance at the time I put together the list of computers to cover.  This month that computer is the Sphere, which was introduced in 1975.  That's right, I said 1975.  That was the same year as the Altair and even before the Apple 1. What was the Sphere and why do we care?  The Sphere was the first "personal computer," defined as such by Byte Magazine due to its consumer focus and built-in keyboard and monitor.  Now, I know that many computers can claim the moniker of first "personal computer", and rightly so, but this one has the endorsement of an early, well-respected, long-running computer magazine and they have good reason for feeling this way about the Sphere.  Once you hear the details, you'll see just how ground-breaking this machine was at a very early period of computer history. Not only that, some of the personal stories behind the machine are simply downright fascinating. Ben Zotto is the undisputed expert on the Sphere in these times, after finding an abandoned machine sitting on the sidewalk and deciding to adopt it and learn more about it.  He recently wrote a comprehensive book on the Sphere called "Go Computer Now!" that I mentioned the last episode I had acquired.  Well, I ended up reading that book cover-to-cover and really enjoying it.  So much so that I decided to contact Ben and see if he would be willing to come onto the podcast to talk about his book and the Sphere Computer.  Thankfully, he was.  This podcast actually serves two purposes: first as an interview with Ben to learn more about him and his book, and secondly as an overview of a computer I didn't cover back when I started this podcast back in 2013 with the Altair 8800 and the Apple 1. On this day, 22 June 1945, tens of thousands of workers in Nigeria defied the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and walked out on a general strike in protest at the British colonial administration refusing to meet workers' demands for a minimum wage of 2 shillings and sixpence and a 50% increase in the cost of living allowance. The TUC wanted to delay any action, but after months of agitation involving mass meetings of up to 8,000 workers at a time, the workers were not prepared to wait any longer. L'Ajuntament de Lloret de Mar està executant una nova campanya d'asfaltatge durant els mesos de maig i juny amb una inversió de 650.000 euros. L'actuació té com a objectiu continuar millorant l'estat de la via pública i del paviment en diferents punts del municipi, amb treballs que es preveu que finalitzin a finals d'aquest mes. Les obres, iniciades fa dues setmanes, consisteixen principalment en la renovació de la capa superficial de l'asfalt i en la reparació de la base dels carrers que presenten un deteriorament més important. Segons ha explicat el regidor de Mobilitat, Joan Escalona, la selecció de les vies on s'actua respon a criteris tècnics establerts en una auditoria municipal actualitzada recentment. Es prioritzen els carrers que estan en pitjor estat. La campanya afecta una trentena de carrers repartits per diversos barris de Lloret de Mar. Entre les principals vies incloses en aquesta fase hi ha els carrers Girona, Sant Bonaventura, Agustí Oriol i Botet, Joaquim Lluhí i Rissech, Pompeu Fabra, Cerdans, Modistes, Floristes, Segadors, Pentinadores, Ferrers, Mecanògrafes, Joan Baptista Lambert, Mistral, Verge de Loreto, Sant Pere, Rafael Albertí, del Pas, Empúries, del Camp, del Tucà, Venus, Nicaragua, de l'Òrbita, Joaquim Blume Carreras, del Molí, de Lope Mateo i la pujada de Francesc Campderà. 6-9 May 1926, in a week that changed the BBC forever... this is part 2 of our 3-part special on the BBC and the General Strike 100 years ago this week (at time of podcast release), two million strikers were out in solidarity with the miners. It brought unique challenges to the BBC - with Winston Churchill trying to take it over, a tightrope of independence and impartiality, and broadcast requests from the Archbishop of Canterbury (no), the Leader of the Opposition (no), the TUC (no) and the Prime Minister (come on in sir!). John Reith welcomes the PM to his own home, even rewriting his speech for him while he's on air. It's all part of what we're calling The BBC and the General Strike in 5 (Over-)Steps. This episode, we'll discover over-reaching editorialising of the news, Reith the rewriter and those notably absent voices of opposition. Hmm. #117 The BBC's First Homosexual: a new play - with Dr Stephen Hornby and Professor Marcus Collins A special episode about a new play about on the true tale of Britain's first broadcast debate on homosexuality. We're outside of our moment-by-moment timeline (currently anchored in November 1923 - we return there soon) to highlight this under-appreciated moment at the 1950s BBC. After much deliberation, BBC producers planned and recorded an experimental discussion programme, but it wasn't broadcast until three years later, as an edited version called 'The Homosexual Condition'. The content may be rather shocking to today's ears, but progressive as far as its producers were concerned. The recordings are long lost, but the transcript survives and was discovered by Professor Marcus Collins (Professor of British History at Loughborough University) at the BBC Written Archives Centre. Marcus brought it to Dr Stephen Hornby (Lecturer in Drama and Theatre Practice at the University of Salford) who put pen to paper. They both join us this episode tell us how history met drama in this new play: The BBC's First Homosexual. This is not a First Amendment issue. He wasn't peacefully protesting. There is plenty of video showing him actively blocking ICE vehicles before the shooting. That matters. This is also not a Second Amendment issue. He wasn't walking down the street, minding his business, and accidentally flashing a concealed carry gun. He was in direct physical conflict with law enforcement while armed. According to reporting, he had allegedly been “on duty” the week before, tracking ICE, and had been taken to the ground by agents, injuring his ribs. This time, when he went back “on duty,” he brought a gun. I understand why people instinctively hesitate to side with federal law enforcement. I really do. But if we're being honest, this situation demands a clear-eyed assessment—not emotional reflexes or ideological posturing. If the political alignment were reversed—if this were someone at a protest you agreed with—would you still argue the outcome was justified? In this case, my answer is still yes, the individual was at fault, regardless of ideology. As gun owners, we talk constantly about personal responsibility. That responsibility includes knowing what situations you do not escalate, especially when armed. A fight you cannot win is a fight against law enforcement officers when you are carrying a firearm. The moment you insert yourself into a physical confrontation with LEOs while armed, you are the one escalating the situation. Everyone knows this. This is not new.
