Shottie on Miami Hip-Hop and His JourneyIn this episode of Florida Sound Archive, we're joined by Miami rapper Shottie for a deep dive into his journey through hip-hop, from his earliest beginnings to what's next.Born in the Dominican Republic and later moving to New York City, Shottie shares how the passing of his father ultimately brought him to Miami, where he grew up in the Kendall area. He reflects on first discovering hip-hop through DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince and the classic track Parents Just Don't Understand, before diving deeper into the culture with artists like Redman, Wu-Tang Clan, and Naughty by Nature. We also explore his discovery of Miami hip-hop pioneers including Trick Daddy, JT Money, 2 Live Crew, Mother Superior, Mr. Mic Rippa, and DJ Craze, and how learning about their work gave him a broader perspective on Miami hip-hop and its place within the larger culture.Shottie walks us through starting to rap in high school under his original stage name Deadshot, performing early shows at the Cameo Theater (Miami Beach) and the Chili Pepper (Coconut Grove), and forming the group IDEE4, which made the leap to Los Angeles before ultimately returning to South Florida six months later. We get into his creative process, including his approach to recording, collaborating with producers and rappers locally and internationally, developing album artwork, and the sonic and cinematic influences that shape his projects. Shottie also reflects on performances in Orlando, New York City, Fort Wayne, and Toronto, and what lies ahead in terms of touring and new music.
If you ever needed proof that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is less a museum and more a cultural argument with a gift shop, Episode 13 of On The Record opens by doing what the institution does best: stretching the phrase “rock and roll” until it politely accommodates everyone from Wu‑Tang Clan to Shakira, with a quick stop at INXS (or, as Michael once heard on the BBC, the new Australian sensation “Inks”). Brian runs through the 2026 nominee list like a gig guide for the afterlife—The Black Crowes, Jeff Buckley, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis, Phil Collins (solo, because apparently we're double-dipping now), Melissa Etheridge, Lauryn Hill, New Edition, Pink, Luther Vandross—and lands on the question that always makes the Hall quietly hilarious: who is this for, exactly? Michael's baffled by the ceremony mechanics (do nominees really “turn up hoping”?), while Brian reassures him it's not quite the Oscars, before casually dropping the detail that there's a public vote. Nothing says rock's rebellious spirit like “exercise our democratic right” via a link. The more interesting subtext, though, is what induction inevitably drags in: absence. Several nominees have key members who've died—Buckley, Michael Hutchence, Ian Curtis—prompting the kind of morbid logistics only a Hall of Fame can inspire. Michael wonders aloud whether New Order could be coaxed into a once-only appearance, and if so, would Peter Hook be anywhere near the bass, given the long-running fallout. Rock history, as ever, is part music, part family law. From there, the episode pivots into “telly as coping mechanism” territory. Michael has started season two of Hijack, acknowledging (with Idris Elba's own executive-producer embarrassment) the inherent silliness of re-hijacking a man who has already been hijacked. Brian, meanwhile, goes looking for light relief in bleak news cycles and discovers Resident Alien—a show he'd dismissed as fluff until it turns out to be fluff with enough teeth to feel like therapy. The alien-in-a-small-town premise becomes an excuse for a few sharp jokes about humanity's trajectory. But the main event is the week's shared homework: Paul McCartney: Man on the Run, the new documentary spanning the years between the Beatles' breakup and Lennon's murder. Brian begins with dread—opening on “Silly Love Songs” is hardly a confidence-builder—but both hosts admit the film wins them over. They praise the craft: strong editing, collage-like imagery, and an effective “no talking heads (but their voices)” approach. Then they do the responsible thing and ask the awkward question: how honest can a documentary be when McCartney's own company financed it? Their answer is satisfyingly unresolved. Michael argues it's “warts-and-all enough” to avoid feeling like a total snow job—especially when the film lets other musicians (Nick Lowe, Chrissie Hynde) politely wonder what on earth Paul was thinking during the early, patchy years. Brian agrees McCartney produced plenty of throwaway material, though he'll still go in to bat for Band on the Run and even dares to defend “Coming Up” (which Michael treats as a personal affront). They both wish the doco lingered longer on the Lagos chapter, one of the few moments in the Wings story that feels like true risk rather than post-Beatles reputation management. The emotional spine, however, is Scotland. The documentary's portrayal of McCartney retreating to a remote farm with Linda is read here not as quaint pastoral cosplay, but as a survival strategy—grief, disorientation, and the sudden absence of the band-as-family. The hosts talk candidly about parental loss, the Beatles as McCartney's “emotional prop,” and Lennon as the creative foil who kept Paul's “twee” instincts on a leash. Linda comes out of it as both partner and lightning rod: necessary to him, mercilessly judged by everyone else. Along the way, Brian remembers seeing Wings at the Myer Music Bowl in 1975 (yes, he was there), and the hosts revive Norman Gunston as the patron saint of awkward interviews—plus Michael's conspiracy theory that McCartney's infamous Japan marijuana bust may have been a deliberate exit strategy from a tour that Wings' hearts weren't in. It's ridiculous. It's also, perversely, the kind of narrative logic rock biographies thrive on. By the end, the Hall of Fame is still a “broad church,” McCartney is still a genius with a questionable edit button, and Scotland remains the unlikely setting for both reinvention and retreat. The biggest twist is that for two men who can't even land a sponsor, they spend 30 minutes proving the oldest rock cliché true: the past is never really over—someone's just nominated it. Scream is one of the most prolific meta horror movie franchises of all time, but the question remains: When does Ghostface quit the killing game and join The Wu-Tang Clan? They're really milking this origin story, if you ask us. Besides getting our hair scared white, we also have a nice roster of trailers to go over and we even hear from some long time listeners. “Check out our Nerdy Bitz!”On the very first Nerdy Bitz bonus episode of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim The Nerd plug in, turn it up, and dive headfirst into the 2026 nominees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. No safe takes. No polite clapping. Just passionate, occasionally unhinged music nerdery. They break down the legacies, the cultural impact, and the “wait… how are they not already in?” factor for a stacked lineup: The Black Crowes, Jeff Buckley, Mariah Carey, Phil Collins, Melissa Etheridge, Lauryn Hill, Billy Idol, INXS, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, New Edition, Oasis, P!nk, Sade, Shakira, Luther Vandross, and Wu-Tang Clan. From arena anthems to soul-shattering ballads, from metal epics to hip-hop game changers, nothing is off limits. Is influence more important than sales? Does genre even matter anymore? And how do you compare the operatic sweep of one legend to the gritty rebellion of another? Professor Aubrey and Tim The Nerd wrestle with the impossible task of narrowing down greatness. To close it out, they each reveal the five artists they would vote into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame if they held the power. Alliances are tested. Lines are drawn. Feelings are felt.As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. Today's episode of The Rizzuto Show might be the most “2026 energy” thing we've ever done — and that's saying something for a daily comedy show that thrives on chaos.First up: Liquid Death has created a $495 Bluetooth speaker urn called the “Eternal Playlist,” so when you're cremated, your ashes can keep vibing to Spotify. Yes, this is real. Yes, there's a stat about reducing your odds of haunting. And yes, Moon almost added it to his cart. We break down the marketing genius (or insanity), debate whether ghosts prefer classic rock or lo-fi beats, and ask the real question: who is this actually for? Then we dive headfirst into the wildest piece of funny celebrity gossip of the week. Bonnie Blue — an OnlyFans creator — claims she's pregnant after what she called a “breeding mission” involving 400 guys. Naturally, the internet immediately tagged Maury Povich. We discuss whether Maury should come out of retirement, whether we should host the paternity special ourselves in St. Louis, and how many DNA swabs King Scott is willing to sort through before lunch. It's entertainment gossip meets absurd reality TV, and somehow it only gets weirder. As if that wasn't enough, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominations dropped, and the studio turned into a full-blown debate club. Wu-Tang Clan. Sade. Oasis. Mariah Carey. Does the Rock Hall still matter? Does any award show? Do artists secretly care even when they pretend they don't? It's sarcastic humor, passionate music arguments, and classic Rizz Show energy all rolled into one. This episode is peak funny podcast chaos — part comedy podcast, part music nerd fight, part daily humor therapy session for St. Louis and beyond. If you love pop culture commentary, comedy news, weird headlines, and the kind of daily show that spirals off topic in the best possible way, this one's for you.And yes… we still want to know who's buying that urn.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.Heart Attack Grill 'spokesman' dies after apparent heart attackThe car with $8,660 in tickets that nobody will towWhat is sepsis, developed by UK woman who lost 4 limbs, after dog lick? What Does It Mean When a Dog Paws You? Welcome back to your favorite daily comedy show, where the headlines are real, but our reactions are legally questionable.Today's chaos kicks off with the most unnecessary invention of the year: a Bluetooth-enabled funeral urn from Liquid Death called the “Eternal Playlist.” Yes, you can now haunt your family in surround sound. It's $495, it plays Spotify from beyond the grave, and somehow Moon almost bought one. Because of course he did. If you've ever wanted to DJ your own memorial service, congratulations — capitalism wins again. Then we pivot HARD into the internet's most uncomfortable math problem: an OnlyFans creator claiming she's pregnant after what she called a “breeding mission” involving 400 men. Four. Hundred. Naturally, the internet tagged Maury Povich like he's the Avengers of paternity testing. We discuss whether Maury should come out of retirement, whether this is marketing genius or chaos theater, and whether King Scott is now qualified to host a 400-man DNA special live from The Pageant in St. Louis. (We're not saying we'd do it… but we're also not not saying it.)From there, it's a full-on pop culture roller coaster. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees drop, and the gang debates whether Iron Maiden, Oasis, Sade, Wu-Tang Clan, and Mariah Carey deserve the nod — while Moon questions whether the Hall means anything anymore. It's passionate. It's slightly heated. It's exactly what a daily comedy show about music opinions should sound like.We also break down Missouri's proposed “Taylor Swift Act” targeting AI deepfakes, Benny Blanco's horrifying bare feet, a Shaky Knees festival lineup that slaps, and the emotional weight of some heartbreaking celebrity news. And because we contain multitudes, we close things out with an all-out war over the greatest TV theme songs of all time. From Fraggle Rock to Perfect Strangers to Thundercats — friendships were tested. This episode is a perfect example of why this daily comedy show works: weird news, celebrity chaos, music debates, childhood nostalgia, and just enough sarcasm to keep it spicy without getting us fired. If you like your entertainment gossip slightly unhinged but still informed, welcome home.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

For the month of February, Not A Bomb is shining a spotlight on some of the greatest Black directors in cinematic history. This week, Troy and Brad shift gears from grounded crime dramas to full‑throttle grindhouse fantasy as they explore their first film from RZA — the Wu‑Tang Clan legend turned filmmaker — with his 2012 martial‑arts epic The Man with the Iron Fists.Set in the chaotic, neon‑splashed world of Jungle Village, the film follows a humble blacksmith who becomes entangled in a violent power struggle between assassins, warriors, mercenaries, and one extremely committed Russell Crowe. Drawing inspiration from Shaw Brothers classics, spaghetti westerns, and old‑school kung fu cinema, RZA blends genre homage with his own hip‑hop sensibilities to create something loud, stylish, and completely unrestrained. With bone‑crunching fight scenes, outrageous characters, and a world that feels ripped straight from a fever‑dream comic book, The Man with the Iron Fists asks a simple question: can pure passion and love for martial‑arts cinema overcome a chaotic script and some questionable acting choices? Troy and Brad dig into RZA's directorial vision, the film's wild production energy, and why this gonzo kung‑fu mashup has earned a cult following.Sharpen your blades — this one gets rowdy. The Man with the Iron Fists is directed by RZA and stars Russell Crowe, Cung Lee, Lucy Liu, Bryon Mann, RZA, Rick Yune, David Bautista, and Jamie ChungWant to help support the show? Three years ago I interviewed my friend and occasional ACL contributor Gabe Bogart for Episode 29, our anniversary episode. We had such a good time we talked about doing a podcast called SLEPT ON IT, and so I sat on this episode for years, waiting for us to get off our asses and make it happen. No one ever asked why episode 30 was missing, so it feels right for an episode with this title to turn up years later. KPFA Theatre Critic Richard Wolinsky reviews “How Shakespeare Changed My Life” at Berkeley Rep Peets Theatre through March 1, 2026. TEXT OF REVIEW You're just a kid. You're Black .Your teachers think you're stupid, a hopeless fat boy. At home, your mom tossed out your junkie dad. Mom herself is ice cold, and when you're sixteen, Mom throws you out on the street. You're homeless, destitute, and you love Shakespeare. That's the start of the world premiere one person play, How Shakespeare Saved My Life, written and performed by Jacob Ming-Trent, now at Berkeley Rep's Peets Theatre through March 1st. The play is billed as semi-autobiographical, and it's unclear what the relationship is between Jacob the character and Jacob the playwright performer. The real Jacob, for example, was already on stage at age eleven, and was admitted to acting school in New York at the age of seventeen, before developing a career in Hollywood. It shouldn't matter, but in retrospect, it does. The story, at least, feels real, and Jacob Ming-Trent has the acting chops to make it so, to grab an audience and to keep them. When the play works, it works wonders. The basic idea is that Shakespeare himself was an urban artist, in his own lifetime no different than Tupac or Biggie or the Wu-Tang Clan. Famous lines from the plays are easily incorporated into the dialogue, and each takes on new meaning and resonance. The Elizabethan poet meets the street. Jacob Ming-Trent has an innate ability to create empathy, an empathy that expands via the brilliant immersive staging of director Tony Taccone. When the lights, the sound, the acting and the script all work in tandem, the result can be stunning, as witness the character Jacob's discovery of James Baldwin, or his scenes with his dad. The theater shakes, the images flashed behind the actor never stop. But not everything does work. Phone dialogues with God through an old fashioned telephone fall flat, as does a sequence in a jail cell with an individual of uncertain gender. Some Shakespearean monologues go on too long, and the play itself does not stick the landing, leaving the audience wondering how the play's Jacob became the stage's Jacob. Audience participation, so successful earlier, now dissipates in a final, unearned test. But as a world premiere, some of these issues can be corrected going forward and there is enough here, and Jacob Ming-Trent is talented enough, to find solutions to these and other problematic elements. How Shakespeare Saved My Life is a work in progress, but even so, it's a diamond in the rough. How Shakespeare Saved My Life plays at Berkeley Rep's Peets Theatre through March 1st. A recent decision by the U.S. Treasury Department is a major win for tribes. For the first time, tribes are on the same level as states when it comes to determining how tribal services are taxed. Advocates call the decision “historic” and say it is a significant breakthrough in tribal sovereignty. Not only will it allow tribes to keep hundreds of millions of dollars more per year, it removes the tax filing hassle for small contractors who work with tribes. We'll hear about the decade-long push to change what is called the General Welfare Exclusion and what it means for tribal economic development. It's Christmas time, so we're looking at a movie that tells the story of a mysterious man who spends a lot of time on the roof with his animal friends and has the ability to sneak into your house undetected as if by magic: Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai! Ghost Dog appears nowhere on the 1999 box office charts because it technically didn't have a major theatrical release in the US until March of 2000 (it did begin its festival run in 1999, starting in May at the Cannes Film Festival where it was nominated for the Palme D'or) Starring Forest Whitaker and written and directed by Jim Jarmusch with a score by Wu-Tang Clan's RZA, Ghost Dog is a movie unlike any other, aggressively defying genre and staying laser-focused on its bizarre but endearing vision. This week, John and Julia are joined by returning guest Sean Malin, author of the just-released book The Podcast Pantheon to talk Whitaker, Jarmusch, podcasts, Jon Hamm, and Christmas movies!

Cultural critic Jason A. England joins Bomani Jones to discuss 1995, one of the most pivotal years in the evolution of hip-hop. They highlight how regions like New York, Houston, and California each developed distinct styles and sounds, and how regional diversity enabled rich cultural exchange, as fans eagerly explored the unique flavors of rap from different cities. They discuss how Mobb Deep and the Wu-Tang Clan were not only influential in New York but also shaped hip-hop's sound nationwide. OA1195 - How much of the federal government has actually shut down, and why? We explore the truth behind the spin, and Matt breaks the exclusive story of how at least one part of the executive branch appears to be illegally operating at full capacity. We then then connect some of the most fast-moving stories of the past few weeks to bring out the terrifying relationship between the obvious legal issues around the Trump administration's threats to invade Venezuela, underreported executive actions on “Antifa” and “domestic terrorism” and their broad potential consequences, and the Trump's recent threat to use US cities as “training grounds” for US troops. Then: good news! Jenessa shares a win on voting rights out of Pennsylvania, and Matt celebrates a resounding victory for the free speech rights of non-citizen students like Rumeysa Ozturk and Mahmoud Khalil from a Reagan-appointed federal judge. Finally, today's footnote confirms that the Wu Tang Clan is as a matter of law indeed nothing to fuck with. “Stephen Miller takes leading role in strikes on alleged Venezuelan drug boats,” The Guardian (9/29/2025) “Designating Cartels And Other Organizations As Foreign Terrorist Organizations And Specially Designated Global Terrorists” – The White House (1/20/2025) “Invocation of the Alien Enemies Act Regarding the Invasion of The United States by Tren De Aragua” – The White House (3/15/2025) “Designating Antifa as a Domestic Terrorist Organization” – The White House (9/22/2025) “Countering Domestic Terrorism and Organized Political Violence,” The White House (9/25/2025) Boston senior federal judge William Young's order in AAUP v. Rubio (9/30/2025) Memorandum & Order Granting and denying parts of Martin Shkreli's motion to dismiss in PleasrDAO v. Shkreli (9/25/2025):
Ol' Dirty Bastard once saved a four-year old girl who was trapped under a Ford Mustang. He took a limo with an MTV news crew to collect his welfare check. He was charged with attempted murder of an NYPD officer. Chased by bloodthirsty Rottweilers. Shot by men in ski masks. His fame led to an addiction to cocaine, and that addiction led to ten arrests in the span of a few months. He was granted a weekend furlough from a rehab facility but went AWOL and wound up on the lam. Before long he wound up in Dannemora, aka Clinton Correctional Facility, aka Little Siberia, a maximum security prison in upstate New York, where he had to go to extreme lengths just to stay sane – and to survive.
