Bongani Bingwa speaks to Paula Cristina Roque, Executive Director of IntelWatch, about mounting allegations that President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government orchestrated a deadly post-election crackdown in 2025, with reports estimating that up to 10,000 people may have been killed in what critics describe as one of East Africa’s worst political bloodbaths; as civil society organisations, including IntelWatch, prepare to take the matter to the International Criminal Court, citing grave human rights abuses alongside digital-era violations such as surveillance, spyware deployment, and internet blackouts used to mask state repression, Roque unpacks the evidence, the potential legal precedent, and what this landmark case could mean for justice, accountability, and digital rights across Africa. 702 Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa is broadcast on 702, a Johannesburg based talk radio station. In this episode of America's Founding Series on The P.A.S. Report Podcast, Professor Nick Giordano tells the riveting story of Pelatiah Webster, the clergyman-turned-economist, who saw America's future more clearly than anyone of his time. As the young republic teetered on collapse in 1781, Webster's bold vision for limited government, sound money, and individual enterprise laid the groundwork for the U.S. Constitution and the free-market system that built the nation. His warnings about inflation, dependency, and centralized control echo today as socialism and big-government promises sweep through modern politics. Episode Highlights How Pelatiah Webster's 1781 blueprint inspired Madison and Hamilton and helped shape the U.S. Constitution. Why Webster's fight against debt, inflation, and dependency remains a direct warning to today's socialist and big-government movements. What Webster taught about freedom and property rights and why capitalism, not government control and socialism, is the true guardian of liberty.

The extraordinary life story of the billionaire businessman Jimmy Lai, a leading Hong Kong democracy activist fighting for freedom of speech who became China's most famous political prisoner. Jimmy Lai escaped mainland China when he was twelve years old, at the height of a famine that killed tens of millions. In Hong Kong, he hustled and often slept overnight on a table in a clothing factory where he did odd jobs. At twenty-one, he was running a factory. By his mid-twenties, he owned one and was supplying sweaters and shirts to some of the biggest brands in the United States, from Polo to The Limited. His ideas about retail led him to create Giordano in 1981, and with it “fast fashion.” But then came the 1989 democracy spring protests and the June 4th Tiananmen massacre. His reaction to the violence was to enter the media industry to push China toward more freedoms. He started a magazine, Next, to advocate for democracy in Hong Kong. Then, just two years before the city was to return to Chinese control, he founded the Apple Daily newspaper. Its mix of bold graphics, gossip, local news, and opposition to the Chinese Communist Party was an immediate hit. For more than two decades, Lai used Appleand Next as part of a personal push for democracy. A draconian new security law came into effect in Hong Kong in mid-2020, effectively making human rights advocacy and free speech a crime and censorship a fact. Lai was arrested and held without bail before being convicted on trumped-up charges. At the end of 2023, a lengthy national security trial, that could see him jailed for life, alleged “collusion with foreign forces” and printing seditious materials. China's most famous political prisoner has been held in solitary confinement since December 2020, while his supporters and family continue the fight to have him freed. Mark L. Clifford, former editor-in-chief of the South China Morning Post and the Standard and President of The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation, draws on his three-decade friendship with Lai to tell the inside story of Lai's activism and his bravery in standing up to China. UN Cyber Crime Treaty: Authoritarian Assault on Free Speech. Ivana Stradner discussed the controversial UN Cyber Crime Treaty, which she argues is an assault on international rule of law spearheaded by Russia and China. The treaty is feared because it enables digital authoritarianism, censorship, and surveillance by potentially forcing companies to grant government access to private data and share user information globally. The US should reject ratification and defer to the Budapest Convention, relying instead on powerful offensive and defensive cyber capabilities for deterrence. 1954

With Halloween around the corner, one of the peak seasons for chocolate and confectionery demand, cocoa prices have corrected sharply lower, down -20% MOM and YTD losses are approaching -40%, after historic gains through 2025. This week, the final-quarter demand side data for the 2024/25 season arrived, and the 3Q grind was generally better than expected – albeit still historically weak. It will, however, take some time before consumers start to see the declining input costs of chocolate production hit their hip pocket. But there are strong indications that perhaps the worst of the cocoa market crunch is over, and that industry can plan with a little more confidence than in recent years.
