In this new series, I am talking to black artists about their life experiences and looking forward to the future to the society we want to build and live in. In this episode, I talk to Graham Cleland, a Graffitti artist from County Durham - and my cousin. In the past, as a white woman living in a rural white area, I have been wary of talking about race. I felt I had no place in the conversation and that my voice wasn't wanted or needed.  Black Lives Matter has changed that.  The campaign felt like a hand being extended to ask everyone to come together in solidarity to  face the difficult conversations, to listen, to struggle through the awkwardness to find the right language to be able to discuss the issues.  This series is my first step on that path. Graham and I are cousins - and friends.  He is someone I have played with, teased. shared family events with and admired as he has grown as an artist, mentor and role model. I normally see him at big family gatherings, where the cousins gather, swap stories of what has happened since we last met and laugh at some of the daft things our relatives have done lately (of which there are always plenty to choose from!). We have never sat down one and one and had a serious conversation about Graham's experiences of growing up in a white family, in a white area, with an absent black father. Until now. Graham Clelland is a graffiti artist - proud of his raw, passionate, exuberant and subversive artform - a combination of modern expression and an impulse as ancient as cave drawings. The Chrises stay committed to Fancy Friday and ponder the origin story of cotton candy. Even though Chris & Chris look sweet in their ties, one of them gets called out for wearing the exact same dirty clothes as yesterday. Christopher Joseph makes the argument that a tie makes a person automatically smell good, while Christopher Gardinier counters that a necktie in no way makes you odorless. Agreeing to disagree, The Chrises conclude that Behr Marquee paint may be false advertising with their one-coat guarantee, and the new paint canister tops are a struggle-and-a-half to open. Why can't they just paint it all black?!

Holy Moly you Guys, we recorded 22 Episodes in 2017, having started this little project back in late August, almost September. In that time we have had well over 1000 downloads in total, with a one day record of 99 downloads! That just happened in December, with our Mars Hill Episodes One and Two! Thanks to everyone who participated in the MH episodes discussion and offline conversations. You all know who you are.. Looking forward to even more of that in the future, for sure, and I thoroughly enjoyed making those episodes, so please do check them out! What an honor it has been to spend time with you all and talk about all sorts of things we are not just “curious” about, but inspired to actively seek out and better understand them. That we may feel and appreciate esoteric topics more fully as our knowledge and comfort with them grows. But at its baseline, and for the purposes of this podcast there is one overriding and continuous theme we will devote ourselves to here, and it’s the plant. If you still are here with me by now, I’m gonna go ahead and take it for a given that you do too. Cannabis is a special gift, an embattled ally to millions, and perhaps the single greatest panacea against general pain, mental and physical suffering, and indeed grave diseases- to ever take the stage alongside we poor, fragile, fleshy humans in this short, brutally painful adventure that holds for each and every one of us but one possible conclusion.
