In the midst of the terrible Trump tax bill moving through Congress, Ralph invites Sarah Anderson who directs the Global Economy Project at the Institute for Policy Studies to discuss the massive tax loopholes huge companies like Amazon get that allow them to pay far less in taxes than ordinary working people. Then, Greg LeRoy from Good Jobs First joins us to discuss how state taxpayers are footing the bill for these massive data centers companies like Google are building all over the country. Plus, Ralph has some choice words for passive unions and responds to listener feedback about our guest last week, Nadav Wieman.Sarah Anderson directs the Global Economy Project at the Institute for Policy Studies and is a co-editor of the IPS website Inequality.org. Her research covers a wide range of international and domestic economic issues, including inequality, CEO pay, taxes, labor, and Wall Street reform. They're (Congress is) planning to give huge new tax giveaways to large corporations like Amazon and wealthy people like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. And partially paying for those tax cuts for the wealthy by slashing programs that mean so much to so many Americans like Medicaid and food assistance.”Sarah AndersonWe're not going to have a healthy, thriving society and economy as long as we have the extreme levels of inequality that we have today.Sarah AndersonDubbed “the leading national watchdog of state and local economic development subsidies,” “an encyclopedia of information regarding subsidies,” “God's witness to corporate welfare,” and “the OG of ensuring that state and local tax policy actually supports good jobs, sustainability, and equity,”* Greg founded Good Jobs First in 1998 upon winning the Public Interest Pioneer Award. He has trained and consulted for state and local governments, associations of public officials, labor-management committees, unions, community groups, tax and budget watchdogs, environmentalists, and smart growth advocates more than 30 years.Public education and public health are the two biggest losers in every state giving away money to data centers right now.Greg Le RoyWe know of no other form of state spending that is so out of control. Therefore, we recommend that states cancel their data center tax exemptions. Such subsidies are absolutely unnecessary for an extremely profitable industry dominated by some of the most valuable corporations on earth such as Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, and Google.Good Jobs First report: “Cloudy With a Loss of Spending Control”They've (Congress has) known for years that the ordinary worker pays a higher tax rate than these loophole-ridden corporations.Ralph NaderIn my message to Trump, I ask him, "Why is he afraid of Netanyahu? And doesn't he want to come to the rescue of these innocent babies by saying, ‘Mr. Netanyahu, the taxpayers in this country are paying for thousands of trucks stalled at the border of Gaza full of medicine, food, water, electricity, fuel, and other critical necessities? We're going to put a little American flag on each one of these trucks, and don't you dare block them.'”…No answer.Ralph NaderNews 5/23/251. It seems as though the dam in Israeli politics against acknowledging the horrors in Gaza is beginning to break. In an interview with the BBC this week, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert stated that what Israel "is currently doing in Gaza is very close to a war crime. Thousands of innocent Palestinians are being killed.” He went on to say, “the war has no objective and has no chance of achieving anything that could save the lives of the hostages.” These quotes come from the Jerusalem Post. And on May 21st, Haaretz reported that opposition party leader Yair Golan warned that Israel could become a “pariah state, like South Africa once was,” based on its actions in Gaza. Speaking a truth that American politicians appear incapable of articulating, he added, a “sane state does not wage war against civilians, does not kill babies as a hobby, and does not set goals for itself like the expulsion of a population.”2. Confirming this prognosis, the Cradle reports “The Israeli military has admitted that more than 80 percent of the people killed in the attacks on Gaza since Israel breached the ceasefire two months ago are…civilians.” This fact was confirmed by the IDF in response to a request from Hebrew magazine Hamakom, wherein “the military's spokesperson stated that 500 of the 2,780 killed in the Gaza Strip as of Tuesday are ‘terrorists.'” Leaving the remaining 2,280 people killed classified as “not suspected terrorists.” The Cradle compares this ratio, approximately 4.5 civilians killed for every combatant, to the Russia-Ukraine war – a ratio of approximate 2.8 to one. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has “claimed that the ratio is just one civilian killed for each combatant killed.” At the same time, AP reports that while Israel has allowed a minimum of humanitarian aid to enter Gaza, under immense international pressure, “none of that aid actually reached Palestinians,” according to the United Nations spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric. The renewed offensive coupled with the barring of humanitarian aid has raised the alarm about mass starvation in Gaza.3. Developments on the ground in Gaza have triggered a new wave of international outcry. On May 19th, leaders of the United Kingdom, France and Canada issued a joint statement, reading in part, “We strongly oppose the expansion of Israel's military operations in Gaza. The level of human suffering in Gaza is intolerable… The Israeli Government's denial of essential humanitarian assistance to the civilian population is unacceptable and risks breaching International Humanitarian Law…We will not stand by while the Netanyahu Government pursues these egregious actions. If Israel does not cease the renewed military offensive and lift its restrictions on humanitarian aid, we will take further concrete actions in response.” The Parliament of Spain meanwhile, “passed a non-binding motion calling on the government to impose an arms embargo on Israel,” per Anadolu Ajansı. This potential ban, supported by all parties except the conservative People's Party and the far-right Vox, would “ban the exports of any material that could strengthen the Israeli military, including helmets, vests, and fuel with potential military use.” Left-wing parties in Spain are now pushing for an emergency session to impose a binding decree to this effect.4. The United States however seems to be moving backwards. Drop Site news reports Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff made a deal with Hamas ensuring that, “the Trump administration would compel Israel to lift the Gaza blockade and allow humanitarian aid to enter the territory…[and] make a public call for an immediate ceasefire,” in exchange for the release of Edan Alexander. Of course, once Alexander was released Trump reneged completely. Basem Naim, a member of Hamas's political bureau, told Drop Site, “He did nothing of this…They didn't violate the deal. They threw it in the trash.” Besides prolonging further the charnel house in Gaza, this duplicity undermines American credibility in the region, particularly with Iran at a time when Trump is seeking a new deal to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.5. Democrats in Congress are inching towards action as well. On May 13th, Senator Peter Welch introduced Senate Resolution 224, calling for “the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to address the needs of civilians in Gaza.” Along with Welch, 45 Democrats and Independents signed on to this resolution, that is the entire Democratic caucus except for John Fetterman. On May 14th, Rashida Tlaib introduced House Resolution 409, commemorating the Nakba and calling on Congress to “reinstate support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, which provides life-saving humanitarian assistance to Palestinians.” This was cosponsored by AOC and Reps. Carson, Lee, Omar, Pressley, Ramirez, Simon, and Coleman. And, on May 21st, a group of eight senators – Welch, Sanders, Kaine, Merkley, Murray, Van Hollen, Schatz, and Warnock – sent a letter urging Secretary of State Rubio to reopen the investigation into the death of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu-Akleh, per Prem Thakker. The Biden administration ruled the death “unintentional,” but a new documentary by Zeteo News reveals a “Biden cover-up.”6. More action is occurring on college campuses as well, as students go into graduation season. At NYU, a student named Logan Rozos said in his graduation speech, “As I search my heart today in addressing you all…the only thing that is appropriate to say in this time and to a group this large is a recognition of the atrocities currently happening in Palestine,” per CNN. NYU announced that they are now withholding his diploma. At George Washington University, the Guardian reports student Cecilia Culver said in her graduation speech, “I am ashamed to know my tuition [fee] is being used to fund…genocide…I call upon the class of 2025 to withhold donations and continue advocating for disclosure and divestment.” GWU issued a statement declaring Culver “has been barred from all GW's campuses and sponsored events elsewhere.” The moral clarity of these students is remarkable, given the increasingly harsh measures these schools have taken to silence those who speak up.7. Moving on, several major stories about the failing DOGE initiative have surfaced in recent days. First, Social Security. Listeners may recall that a DOGE engineer said “40% of phone calls made to [the Social Security Administration] to change direct deposit information come from fraudsters.” Yet, a new report by NextGov.com found that since DOGE mandated the SSA install new anti-fraud checks on claims made over the phone, “only two claims out of over 110,000 were found to likely be fraudulent,” or 0.0018%. What the policy has done however, is slow down payments. According to this piece, retirement claim processing is down 25%. Meanwhile, at the VA, DOGE engineer Sahil Lavingia, “found…a machine that largely functions, though it doesn't make decisions as fast as a startup might.” Lavingia added “honestly, it's kind of fine—because the government works. It's not as inefficient as I was expecting, to be honest. I was hoping for more easy wins.” This from Fast Company. Finally, CBS reports, “leaders of the United States Institute for Peace regained control of their offices Wednesday…after they were ejected from their positions by the Trump administration and [DOGE] in March.” This piece explains that On February 19th, President Trump issued Executive Order 14217 declaring USIP "unnecessary" and terminating its leadership, most of its 300 staff members, its entire board, installing a DOGE functionary at the top and transferring ownership of the building to the federal government. This set off a court battle that ended Monday, when U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell ruled that the takeover was “unlawful” and therefore “null and void.” These DOGE setbacks might help explain Elon Musk's reported retreat from the political spotlight and political spending.8. On May 21st, Congressman Gerry Connolly passed away, following his battle with esophageal cancer. Connolly's death however is just the latest in a disturbing trend – Ken Klippenstein reports, “Connolly joins five other members of Congress who also died in office over the past 13 months…Rep. Raúl Grijalva…Rep. Sylvester Turner…Rep. Bill Pascrell…Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee…[and] Rep. Donald Payne Jr.” All of these representatives were Democrats and their deaths have chipped away at the close margin between Democrats and Republicans in the House – allowing the Republicans to pass Trump's “Big Beautiful Bill” by a single vote. Connolly himself prevailed over AOC in a much-publicized intra-party battle for the Ranking Member seat on the House Oversight committee. It speaks volumes that Connolly was only able to hold onto that seat for a few short months before becoming too sick to stay on. This is of course part and parcel with the recent revelations about Biden's declining mental acuity during his presidency and the efforts to oust David Hogg from the DNC for backing primaries against what he calls “asleep-at-the-wheel” Democrats.9. Speaking of “asleep-at-the-wheel” Democrats, Bloomberg Government reports Senator John Fetterman “didn't attend a single committee hearing in 2025 until…May 8, about a week after an explosive New York Magazine story raised questions about his mental health and dedication to his job.” Fetterman, who represents Pennsylvania on the Commerce, Agriculture, and Homeland Security committees skipped the confirmation hearings for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Budget Director Russ Vought, some of the most high-profile and controversial Trump appointments. Fetterman still has yet to attend a single Agriculture committee hearing in 2025.10. Finally, in more Pennsylvania news, the state held its Democratic primaries this week, yielding mixed results. In Pittsburgh, progressives suffered a setback with the ouster of Mayor Ed Gainey – the first Black mayor of the city. Gainey lost to Allegheny County Controller Corey O'Connor, the son of former Mayor Bob O'Connor, the Hill reports. In Philadelphia however, voters approved three ballot measures – including expanding affordable housing and adding more oversight to the prison system – and reelected for a third term progressive reform District Attorney Larry Krasner, per AP. Krasner has long been a target of conservatives in both parties, but has adroitly maneuvered to maintain his position – and dramatically reduced homicide rates in Philly. The Wall Street Journal reports Philadelphia homicides declined by 34% between 2023 and 2024, part of substantial decline in urban homicides nationwide. Kudos to Krasner. This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe

Meet Gizem Salcigil White, aka the Turkish Coffee Lady! She is the Founder & CEO of Turkish Coffee Lady, the first and only authentic Turkish coffee brand in the U.S., dedicated to building a global community of coffee explorers and empowering women. With a brick-and-mortar coffee house in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, Gizem has created a space to share 500 years of Turkish coffee traditions—offering delicious coffee, cultural connection, and community. Her journey began over fifteen years ago with a coffee truck and a mission to "bridge cultures over coffee conversations.” After studying Global Marketing Communications at Emerson University, she realized many people were unfamiliar with Turkish coffee culture. She started organizing social coffee events, which evolved into a “digital coffee house” with fellow entrepreneurs. While working at the Turkish Embassy in Washington, D.C., she expanded her events into pop-ups, eventually launching her own coffee truck first at GWU and then around the world. Gizem shares the history of Turkish coffee—how it's made, served, read (yes, read!), and enjoyed. In an era of to-go cups and laptop work sessions, she encourages guests to slow down, savor their coffee, and connect with one another. She also champions the concept of Culinary Diplomacy—bringing communities together over food and drink. Despite facing personal challenges, including the pandemic, Gizem remained resilient, diving back into her business with renewed purpose. She founded The Turkish Coffee Lady Foundation, dedicated to community engagement, and has since launched her own coffee blend, opened her dream coffee shop, and continues to empower women to start their own businesses. We know you'll want to immediately go brew a cup after listening to this episode, or better yet, if you're in the Alexandria area, stop by the Turkish Coffee Lady on King Street, where you will feel as though you've been transported to Turkey.Love the show? In this episode, we welcome one of the foremost scholars in international relations to the podcast, Professor Martha Finnemore. Recognized globally for her pioneering contributions to the field, Finnemore recently received the 2023 Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science alongside Alexander Wendt. This prestigious accolade celebrates their groundbreaking work in constructivism, a theory that has reshaped how we understand international politics by emphasizing the role of shared ideas and norms. In this episode, Finnemore reflects on the journey and impact of constructivism, tracing its rise from a niche critique to a central framework in global governance. We explore the intellectual and real-world challenges of persuading a discipline once dominated by materialist paradigms to take seriously the power of ideas. With enviable clarity, she explains how constructivism reveals the social underpinnings of power, from norms shaping cybersecurity to the shared authority in the governance of AI. Martha Finnemore is University Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at George Washington University. A leading scholar in global governance, international organizations, and social theory, her award-winning books include Rules for the World and The Purpose of Intervention. Her research has appeared in top journals like International Organization and World Politics. Life often leads us down unexpected paths, a truth Kwelli Sneed knows all too well. A graduate of the GWU e-Co Leadership Coaching Program, she now serves as the interim director of the Office of Neighborhood Safety Engagement. Initially joining as Chief of Staff during tumultuous times in the District of Columbia, Kwelli assumed the role of Director following the tragic passing of her friend and colleague, Linda Harlee Harper. She shares insights into navigating these transitions, staying true to herself, and utilizing skills honed through the program.Photography, a passion reignited through a vivid dream reminiscent of her late aunt Sandra, led her to rediscover its significance during the pandemic's chaos, eventually leading her to use photography as the throughline in her coaching. Kwelli discovered the benefits of having her coaching clients use photography to tell the story of who they are, in both their professional and personal lives.During the episode, Bonnie Bucker, Ina Gjikondi, and Kwelli also explore the concept of "line" and "curve," which is a cornerstone of the GWU Leadership Program and is described as representing distinct energies. Kwelli, who identifies as a "line" – analytical and methodical, recognizes the importance of personalizing one's passion as well, a characteristic of someone who describes themselves as a “curve” and follows the twists and turns of life as they come. Inspired by a fellow coach's use of photography in palliative care, she delves into how images evoke emotions and memories, integrating her passion with the science of career coaching, and harmonizing her dual identities.Kwelli demonstrates photography's transformative power by recounting a unique community initiative, providing cameras to teenagers, predominantly boys. Witnessing their introspection and aspirations through their work, she illustrates how photography can empower individuals to explore their identities and aspirations. This conversation acts as a thoughtful reminder to see beyond any barriers you think you may face and to always keep in mind what you're passionate about. You won't want to miss Kwelli's story and how she has stocked her toolbox with tools that will help her use her passions to drive her career.

A member of the Democratic Party serving the Arizona legislature recently chose to step down from his position in light of validated reports regarding sexual misconduct allegations during his college years at a university located in Washington, D.C. On Tuesday, Representative Jevin Hodge stepped up and submitted his resignation, scarcely two months after his appointment to the esteemed position. His departure was accepted by his peers with House Minority Leader Lupe Contreras stating, 'We have accepted Representative Hodge's resignation in good faith and respect for our caucus. The important business of the state remains our unswerving focus as we move forward.' The Arizona Republic newspaper shared an article on Monday, discussing accusations against Rep. Hodge made by a female who alleged that he engaged in nonconsensual sexual behavior. What began in 2015 as an ostensibly consensual encounter while he was a student at George Washington University (GWU), morphed into an event remembered quite differently. A GWU hearing board ruled in 2016 that Hodge had indeed violated conduct policies denouncing sexual violence and misconduct, imposing a disciplinary suspension by barring him from campus; official records confirm this. Discussing his stepping down, Hodge addressed the public via social media. In his statement, Hodge expressed his sorrow 'to those who may have been caused pain by my actions.' Though Mr. Hodge vehemently denied the charges leveled against him, he did acknowledge that the present moment was not his to command in a position of leadership. Offering a more meticulous account of the aforementioned incident, Hodge issued an additional statement earlier, carefully detailing the course of events during his time at GWU. 'When I was a 21-year-old college student, I found myself in a consensual romantic encounter with a fellow student. Both of us had consumed alcohol and remained fully clothed during the entire encounter. I had a clear understanding that consent was indispensable, so once she communicated her discomfort, our interaction ceased immediately. I escorted her outside and called a cab to ensure she reached home safely.', After several months, I was notified that I was being accused of sexual misconduct,' Hodge admitted. 'I take full responsibility for all my actions and have learned from this dire experience, evolving into a more mature individual. However, to avoid any misunderstanding, I categorically deny the charges made against me.', Hodge further stated his commitment to the truth, revealing that he had requested a comprehensive police investigation into the allegations in 2016. 'Unfortunately, the institution failed to comply with my request. I firmly believe in owning up to one's actions. As I sat through the university hearing concerning this matter, I realized the emotional turmoil the incident had caused her. I deeply regret the distress that I inflicted.' The report in The Arizona Republic further stated that the unnamed woman who made the complaint filed it with the school authorities. According to the report, she refrained from pressing formal charges given her status as a lawful permanent resident in the United States at that period. Her concerns were centered around potential harm to her legal standing in the country, should she choose to advance with a legal complaint. As this recent turning of events unfolded, the ripple effects of past actions and their toll on personal and public life again rose to the forefront. The processes used by educational institutions to adjudicate allegations of misconduct, and the lasting marks such allegations can leave on an individual's life, were once more illuminated. It's a stark reminder about the importance of personal responsibility, the acknowledgments of impact on others, and the maturity to learn from past mistakes. No matter how distant the events may be, they have the potential of resurfacing, prompting one to face their consequences. As this situation demonstrates, public officials are no exception to this rule. They must be prepared to face scrutiny and own their past actions. It's a part of the checks and balances that accompany positions of public trust, ensuring these officials remain accountable to their constituents. And public trust is a non-commoditized asset in politics. It demands honesty, integrity, and the ability to brave the consequences of one's actions. For Rep. Hodge, his decision to step down from his post underscores his adherence to some of these norms, a move in line with demonstrating a commitment to these key political tenets. As seen here, a public figure's journey often requires consciously toeing the line of transparency and accountability. Whether acknowledging past wrongdoing or denying allegations wholeheartedly, a willingness to meet consequent accountability head-on is paramount. Overall, the unfolding of this incident has set forth a profound dialogue on matters of personal responsibility and accountability, especially when held up against the yardstick of public service. It's an ongoing discourse and will likely continue to be explored as more such instances come to light. There is a huge national need for psychiatric service providers to help all ages, from children to older adults. —Melissa Batchelor, PhD, RN, FNP, FGSA, FAAN As a family nurse practitioner, my passion has always been in the field of geropsychology - a specialty that utilizes psychological knowledge and methods to understand and assist older individuals and their families in maintaining well-being, conquering challenges, and reaching their highest potential during later stages of life. This specialty is integral to our clinical practice, both in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Now, let's dive into what it means to be a psych mental health nurse practitioner and the incredible work done by remarkable practitioners like Drs. Tony Roberson and Cynthia Awadzi from GWU. ▶️ Nurse Practitioner School: What Do Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners Do? Key points covered in this episode: Main Point 1: What is a Psych-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner? A psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner is a professional who evaluates, diagnoses and addresses the mental health needs of patients throughout their lives. Offers prescribed medications and therapy to help patients who have mental health disorders or substance problems. Responsibilities include conducting physical and psychosocial assessments and providing emergency psychiatric care and treatment. Main Point 2: What does a typical day at work look like for a PMHNP? The typical day's activities vary based on the patients and the clinical environment. A PMHNP meets patients for initial intakes, gathers their full psychiatric history and understands their current concerns. It involves assessing their symptoms, making a differential diagnosis, and developing a treatment plan. Working in an inpatient setting, the focus will primarily be on stabilizing patients with the help of a mental health team. The goal is to prepare them for the transition to an outpatient setting. Main Point 3: What is the average salary for a PMHNP? Psychiatric nursing is known for offering generous salaries compared to other specialties in the field. While the salary also varies based on the state or area where you practice - on average, it is advisable to aim for at least $140,000 per year. Graduate from GW are highly in demand as they are well-prepared to step into the workforce; so you can anticipate good compensation for the skills and expertise you bring to the table. Main Point 4: Why should someone who wants to be a PMHNP apply to GW? The MSN: Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program option gives registered nurses the chance to broaden their horizons in healthcare. ✔️ The lifespan curriculum is one of the key factors that sets GW's program apart. It is crucial for individuals to have the freedom to explore their interests without limitations. That's why the program spans across children, adolescents, adults, and even the geriatric population - a feature to be proud of. ✔️ Another significant advantage of the program is its hybrid nature, making it convenient for working professionals. The vast majority of the coursework is asynchronous, meaning you can work at your own pace without the need for regular meetings with faculty or peers. However, you'll still receive daily support from dedicated faculty who are always available to guide and assist you on your journey - fully committed to ensuring your success. ✔️ Another significant advantage of the program is a focus on addiction management. Many schools of nursing to not have this expertise, but faculty at GW do – ensuring students are prepared to help with our nation's addiction crises. Today we open with Donald Trump arriving in a NY Court to face a civil suit for fraud. Considering there are no victims, no missing money, no broken contracts and no unpaid interest. Yet, the racist AG from NY, Letitia James, who ran on “vote for me and I'll go after Trump,” is bringing that very suit on the Trump business. Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) doesn't know how emergency doors work or that pulling a fire alarm will cause the fire alarm to go off inside a building. From his spokesperson, to MSNBC, to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez doing their utmost to provide cover, there is no real good way to explain such stupidity and/or criminality. Falsely pulling a fire alarm is a felony as is “interrupting Capitol business” as many J6'ers have been made aware. Let's see if he gets charged similarly. Speaking of our two-tiered system of justice, can we break out the Emmy's for the latest television performance by AG Merrick Garland. His fake tears and hitch in his voice is only surpassed by the utter hypocrisy of his statements. Joe Biden locked up almost as badly as Mitch McConnell when addressing some questions by the press. He really is suffering significant lapses in cognitive function, yet the press pretends there is nothing to see. He even told a news outlet how he had convinced Strom Thurmond to vote for the Voting Rights Act when he left the Senate. Three problems with that. Joe left the senate in 2009, but Thurmond died in 2003. The Voting Rights Act passed in 1965. And, Joe Biden wasn't even in the senate until 1973. GWU professor Johnathan Turley put out a short blog detailing 10 of the items worthy of ongoing inquiry for possible Article of Impeachment. After listing the 10, he adds, there are many more, but that list is more than sufficient if even ONE of them is tied to Joe Biden. We have a new “caretaker” to fill the remaining Senate term left by the passing of Dianne Feinstein. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) had to go all the way to Maryland to find the black woman he said he needed to find to fill the position. And, in our current age of demographic check-boxes, he found a militant, socialist, lesbian, black woman who is pro-abortion. He hit the jackpot! Meet Laphonza Butler, the only woman right for California because she doesn't live there. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) wants to tie more Ukraine money to a promise that this administration will enforce border security. It's a laughable joke to watch our representatives play like little children with their pinky-swears and spending money we don't have. Finally, AB2098, California's COVID medical censorship law has been quietly repealed by the very same people who had ridiculously wanted it in place. And we know this is a positive news story because the Legacy/mainstream media is not covering it. Take a moment to rate and review the show and then share the episode on social media. Coach Chelsea speaks wih Coach Simmons as she takes the helm at the University of Memphis. We speak about her plans, her faith in God, Servant Leadership, and apply those principles to her assignment as Head Coach. Two-time NCAA National Champion and Tennessee native Alex Simmons was named the head coach of the Memphis Tiger women's basketball team on April 6, 2023 and became the 13th head coach in the program's history. Simmons comes to Memphis after five seasons at the helm of Gardner-Webb where she led the team to a 90-59 record including a 29-5 mark this past season. The Runnin' Bulldogs broke multiple program, school and Big South records with their 29 victories and a 21-game win streak that included a perfect 18-0 record in conference play. GWU captured the regular season and championship titles for the program's first trip to the Big Dance since the 2010-11 season. Simmons, who was named as the Big South Coach of the Year, saw four of her five starters earn All-Big South honors in 2022-23, while Jhesskya Williams became just the third player in Gardner-Webb history to surpass 2,000 career points, finishing as the program's second all-time leading scorer with 2,049 points. Simmons' basketball roots run deep to one of the most respected programs in the game. She played collegiately at the University of Tennessee under basketball Hall of Fame coach Pat Summitt from 2004-2009, helping the Lady Vols win back-to-back NCAA National Championships in 2007 and 2008. Simmons was a member of three Final Four squads (2005, 2007, 2008) and another Elite Eight team (2006) while serving as a team captain and was also the Lady Vols representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). During the 2021-22 season, Simmons steered the Dogs to an overall record of 11-13 and 10-7 in the Big South. Under Simmons, Alasia Smith was named the Big South Freshman of the Year after the five-time Freshman of the Week averaged 11.3 PPG, 8.3 RPG and led the conference with 4.0 offensive rebounds per game. Simmons led the Runnin' Bulldogs to an 18-11 overall record and 13-7 in Big South Conference play in 2019-20, finishing fifth in the league standings. GWU ended the season on a hot streak, winning four-straight games and seven of their last eight matchups before play was halted prior to the Big South tournament. Under Simmons, Carley Plentovich earned a handful of accolades during the 2019-20 season, including All-Big South honors, as well as a Big South Player of the Week award. She also became the program's 24th 1,000-point scorer, the first under Simmons, and was named to the Big South's All-Academic team. In her first season in Boiling Springs, Simmons led Gardner-Webb to a 16-15 record and 10-8 Big South mark in 2018-19 with a fifth-place finish. Two players - Plentovich and Williams – would earn All-Big South honors. Simmons took over the Runnin' Bulldogs in April 2018 after assistant coaching stints at Ole Miss (2013-2018) and Middle Tennessee State (2010-2013). She also served as a graduate assistant coach at Kansas (2009-2010). Prior to her time at Ole Miss, Simmons served as an assistant coach at Middle Tennessee State, helping the Blue Raiders to three NCAA Tournament appearances during her time on the bench. Her work with the team's post players produced an honorable-mention All-America selection and in the 2011-2012 season saw the Blue Raiders grab the most rebounds since 1983. Also a Street & Smith's All-America Honorable Mention selection in 2001 and 2002, Simmons helped the Golden Eaglettes to Tennessee State Championships in 2001, 2003 and 2004. She was a three-time All-State selection, four-time All-District choice and was named as the Mid-State Player of the Year in 2003. She graduated from the University of Tennessee in 2008 with a degree in exercise science. Simmons and her husband, Christian, have two daughters – Carsyn and Channing. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chefranjohn/support
