The founder of Grief Beyond Belief, Rebecca Hensler, joined us to discuss the founding of the secular support network that has the aim to facilitate peer-to-peer grief support for atheists, Humanists, and other Freethinkers by providing spaces free of religion, spiritualism, mysticism, and evangelism in which to share sorrow and offer the comfort of rational compassion. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/free2think/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/free2think/support
What if this life is all there is? If you are a non-believer and don't envision an afterlife, how do you grieve and where do you reach out for like minded support? My guest today is a phenomenal activist, mother and grief support leader. When Rebecca Hensler lost her young son, she experienced first hand what it meant to be given the wrong type of support. As a non-believer, she wanted to created a safe support group for all who may need it some day. "Grief Beyond Belief" was created as a meaning making celebration of her son.

Greetings Heathens! In today’s episode of Talk Heathen, Vi La Bianca is joined by Anthony Magnabosco. Welcome Anthony! It’s great to have you with us today. You can find Anthony on his channel here: https://www.youtube.com/user/magnabosco210/Let’s get to calls. The first caller is Nicholas. His wife recently passed and is wondering how to keep the memory of his wife alive for their daughter. He is also trying to figure out how best to mourn her passing and what is acceptable for him and his daughter. We are so sorry Nicholas, please definitely reach out to the Secular Therapy Project and Grief Beyond Belief if you need help https://www.seculartherapy.org/ and http://griefbeyondbelief.org/Next up, Shawn from Minnesota would like to talk about how religion is a social construct and what is wrong with understanding that? He goes on to talk about instead of battling for his position, he’d like to approach it more of a reasonable and rational person would. That can be helpful, but I’d also ask this: Why are you getting value out of this belief rather than other places. The following caller Kevin from New York wants to claim that the pineal gland in the brain proves a soul. For those interested, from Wikipedia, the pineal gland produces melatonin, a serotonin-derived hormone which modulates sleep patterns in both circadian and seasonal cycles. Vi asks the all important question, where is the evidence the pineal gland also produces a soul? And how do eyes play a part in this proof? HUH? I got lost completely. The next caller in the queue is Adrian in Texas wanting to discuss how science proves a designer God and lists off a couple scientific facts and discoveries that prove this, except they don’t. He includes in this list, the axial tilt of the Earth, the Moon, and evidence of design all around us. Oh boy.Next up, Clear as Crystal is a theist after being an atheist for a time. Claims that they have trouble with evolution and humans just can’t seem to get it together without a looming and helicopter parent/God. Evolution without God isn’t good enough for me, so there must have been an authority figure of some sort. She also had a tough time and claims it was God that got her through it. Actually, Crystal, that was you getting through it and you are stronger than you give yourself credit for. That’s the episode for today! Stay safe and healthy folks! See you next week!

Rebecca Hensler is the founder of Grief Beyond Belief, a Facebook group devoted to faith-free grief support for those who have just lost a loved one. We spoke about how honesty about death can be comforting for atheists, what she would say to religious people who want to help atheists grieve but say the wrong things, and her go-to resources for secular people coping with loss.
