In today's episode of the Truth Wanted, ObjectivelyDan and Kayse Melone jump into hell to find it does not exist. They then sort through ways of telling people they are wrong and the merits of an atheist evangelizing in a church. Sven in WA has some questions about the value of the soul from a Christian point of view and god as an entity vs. a mind. How useful is it to believe in the concept of a soul? Sven also has a second question about the Pope's belief in hell and the infernalist mindset causing religious trauma. How would things change if masses of people stopped believing in hell? There is plenty of suffering in the here and now; how can we focus on easing that suffering now? Bob in MS wants to know how to tell someone wrong in a good way, a flip on our question of the week. Starting with common ground and using empathy will get you further than picking apart the logic. When we start with empathetic questions, we find similarities. Understanding how people get their truths matters, and if you can examine a claim together by asking how they got to the claim can be effective. These types of conversations are not encouraged in church environments. Giving people tools to help them realize where their ideas are coming from can help them liberate themselves from their false beliefs, even if it takes some time. Check yourself: What is the purpose of telling someone they are wrong?Billy Pilgrim in TX reminds us of how hard it is to get people to believe the truth when they want to believe in other things. People have an investment in these beliefs and oftentimes feel trapped. They may not have a concept of what it is like to be an atheist and do good things. What kind of bandwidth and time does it take to be a truth seeker? How would an atheist within a church provide a benefit?Thank you for tuning in this week! Kelley Laughlin, our backup host joins to close us out and deliver the We Want The Truth segment of the week: What is a bad way to tell someone that they are wrong? There has been no shortage of "deconstruction" or "deconversion" stories to be found on the internet. Sarah Bacaller is the editor of 'Apostate: Stories of Deconversion.' In this conversation Sarah and Will explore themes of apostasy, the fragility of fundamentalist faith, and the importance of listening to personal stories of deconstruction and/or loss of faith. They discuss the cultural contexts of Christianity in the US and Australia, the challenges of engaging with differing beliefs, and the need for compassionate dialogue. They delve into the complexities of interpreting religious texts, the diversity within Christianity, and the significance of compassion and kindness in fostering human dignity. The dialogue emphasises the need for openness to learning and understanding others' experiences, ultimately advocating for a more inclusive and respectful approach to spirituality and community.Sarah's website: https://www.sarahbacaller.com/Buy 'Apostate: Stories of Deconversion': https://www.amazon.com/Apostate-Stories-Deconversion-Sarah-Bacaller/dp/1965646018Want to reach out and let us know your thoughts or suggestions for the show? Gary discusses several recent (and not so recent) instances of individuals leaving the Christian faith after being in it for some time. Sometimes these deconversions are called "deconstructions" and Gary highlights some examples of these and what his views are on them.
Gary explains the interaction he had on Facebook with a former pastor who has since deconverted. Alan Bondar now claims to be an atheist and even wrote a book called "How to Kill God the Easy Way" (presumably those without the book are stuck with the "hard way"). Gary ties his discussion with Bondar into the classic debate between Dr. Greg Bahnsen and Dr. Gordon Stein.
Host Regan Brown sits down with Brian Butler, President of FirstService Residential Illinois, to explore the growing trend of deconversions and how it's reshaping the landscape of homeowner associations (HOAs) in Illinois.
In this episode Matthew comments on a two part series of Christians talking about deconversion. It really is as bad as you think it will be, and is one reason why Christians are spending far too much time talking and not enough time paying attention. Today, we break down the pain-free-birth movement and explore its theological roots. Can women truly experience a pain-free birth? Where did this concept originate, and why is it so controversial? In this episode, we dissect the claims made in the book "Supernatural Childbirth" by Jackie Mize. The leadup to voting this November will renew fears in the United States about Russian malign influence. That means more paranoia from politicians, more alarming op-eds and white papers from the institutes created and funded to draw attention to foreign disinformation, and more mutual suspicions among ordinary people on social media, where journalists and pundits often draw their anecdotal conclusions about popular opinion. This week, for a skeptical view of the foreign disinformation threat in America, The Naked Pravda welcomes Gavin Wilde, an adjunct faculty member at the Alperovitch Institute, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and a former director for Russia, Baltic, and Caucasus Affairs at the U.S. National Security Council. Together with Olga Belogolova, Lee Foster, and Thomas Rid, Wilde recently coauthored “Don't Hype the Disinformation Threat: Downplaying the Risk Helps Foreign Propagandists — but So Does Exaggerating It” in Foreign Affairs. About a month earlier, he also wrote an article in the Texas National Security Review, titled “From Panic to Policy: The Limits of Foreign Propaganda and the Foundations of an Effective Response.” In this week's episode, Wilde talked about both of these essays. Five hundred years ago losing one's faith would have been unimaginable, but today it is commonplace (and even celebrated). To many, the Christian faith seems unbelievable and life seems filled with reasons to set it aside. Both belief and doubt have become increasingly fragile as individuals inhabit a liminal space between the two. What are the factors that have contributed to this shift? Can faith actually be lost? If so, how can it be found again?Andy's original lecture on this topic can be found here. For more resources, visit the L'Abri Ideas Library at labriideaslibrary.org. What is the chief end of man? For many today in our postmodern culture, it seems to be to glorify the authentic self and enjoy it for as long as you can. Scripture has warned us that in latter times, people will become lovers of themselves. Today, the self sits at the center of the social-media movement known as "deconstruction." Our guests again this week Alisa Childers and Tim Barnet, help us break down and understand the foundational and contradictory aspects of this anti-Christian phenomenon and how we can intelligibly respond to it.Alisa Childers: As a lifelong church-goer, follower of Jesus, and former CCM recording artist with the Dove award-winning group ZOEgirl, Alisa experienced a period of profound doubt about her faith in her mid-thirties. This questioning launched an investigation and her journey from unreasoned doubt into a vibrant, rational and informed faith. Ever since the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden, human beings have been walking away from God. Call it backsliding, falling away, or deconverting, the terms are all a variation on the them of unbelief. The popular term in social media today is "deconstructing." Arline interviews this week's guest, Racquelle. Racquelle grew up in Canada in the Seventh Day Adventist church. Conspiracy theories were common in her household. Some of them she bought into.Throughout her life she went through periods of doubt but something kept bringing her back to Church. A sense of obligation and expectation never left her.Eventually, Racquelle deconverted from her faith and deconstructed the conspiracy theories. She now has an interesting perspective on the deconstruction process.LinksFacebookhttps://www.facebook.com/racquelle.pilonInstagramhttps://www.instagram.com/racquelle_p/InteractFor quotes, recommendations, transcripts and more see the full episode show noteshttps://gracefulatheist.com/2023/11/26/racquelle-deconversion-from-sda-and-conspiracy-theories/Join the Deconversion Anonymous Facebook grouphttps://www.facebook.com/groups/deconversionGraceful Atheist Podcast Merch!https://www.teepublic.com/user/gracefulatheistpodcastSupport the podcast on Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/gracefulatheistSecular Gracehttps://gracefulatheist.com/2016/10/21/secular-grace/Deconversionhttps://gracefulatheist.com/2017/12/03/deconversion-how-to/Deconstructionhttps://gracefulatheist.com/2017/12/03/deconversion-how-to/#deconstruction/Attribution"Waves" track written and produced by Makaih Beatshttps://makaihbeats.net/

Have you ever wondered about the modern trend of deconstruction within Christianity, especially amongst the younger generation? Join me as I engage in a thought-provoking conversation with Braxton Hunter, president of Trinity College of the Bible and Theological Seminary. We explore this deeply fascinating phenomenon in depth, digging into its roots and implications for the faith journey. We discuss its evolution from a healthy process of critical thinking to a path away from conservative, bible-based Christianity for some, and the critical importance of teaching our children to think for themselves. We're also not shying away from the challenging discourse around LGBT issues in Christian doctrine, addressing the harmful dichotomy often perpetuated by churches and the changing attitudes towards sin. We dismantle the misconceptions connected with 1 Corinthians 6, 9-11, bringing a fresh perspective to the expectations and burdens put on Christians, and how it impacts our understanding of selfhood in Christ. We speak candidly about the guilt, shame, and harm that can arise from these misunderstandings, highlighting the urgent need for Christians to stand with those grappling with sin. Finally, we dive into the powerful effects of social issues on deconstruction and deconversion, and how the dialogue on biblical sexuality can push people to question their beliefs. Braxton shares his insight on the shifting attitudes towards the LGBT community within Christian doctrine and how the gospel offers everyone, regardless of their struggles with sexuality, a promise of hope and acceptance. This episode is a must-listen for those seeking a deeper understanding of these pressing issues in contemporary Christianity. This week's guest is Megan. Megan grew up in a fundamentalist Catholic home with an irrationally religious mother and an absent father. As a teen, she was invited to an evangelical bible study after school and after some serious “love bombing” by the youth group, she was a part of a community. “You get ‘loved bombed' when you walk into a new church or into a new youth group, and they make you feel like you are the most welcome you will ever be and that your community is so indeed of you and your specific experience…”Evangelical Christianity worked well for Megan for years. She had questions and concerns but nothing that made her leave for good until she knew one of her kids was possibly LGBTQ. That was when she knew she'd have to figure out the religious future of her family. Now, she is an atheist and has never been more free. She's living out secular grace, sealing up her boundaries, and being the whole person she 's always needed to be. This week's guest is Mandi. Mandi grew up in a mixed Jewish and Christian home, attending a Messianic temple. She loved every minute of it as a kid and cherishes her memories. In high school and as a young adult, though, she began to ask questions, and as we've seen in religion time and time again, her questions were dismissed. After incredible and full years of life—moving to Israel, returning to Georgia, joining an Orthodox Jewish community, getting married, and having children—she identifies as an agnostic atheist.“It's been so good for my mental health, to not believe, to stop praying.”InteractFor quotes, recommendations, transcripts and more see the full episode show noteshttps://gracefulatheist.com/2023/10/01/mandi-deconversion-from-messianic-judaism/Join the Deconversion Anonymous Facebook grouphttps://www.facebook.com/groups/deconversionGraceful Atheist Podcast Merch!https://www.teepublic.com/user/gracefulatheistpodcastSupport the podcast on Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/gracefulatheistSecular Gracehttps://gracefulatheist.com/2016/10/21/secular-grace/Deconversionhttps://gracefulatheist.com/2017/12/03/deconversion-how-to/Deconstructionhttps://gracefulatheist.com/2017/12/03/deconversion-how-to/#deconstruction/Attribution"Waves" track written and produced by Makaih Beatshttps://makaihbeats.net/

She was discouraged by her parents, who said the legal profession isn't suitable for a Christian woman. I mentioned the show because it's based on a true story of a serial r*pist who got away with his crimes in part by committing them in different cities or counties, and the police departments didn't share any information with each other. The show centers on a woman who was the most recent victim and spoke to the police, but the two male detectives who questioned her didn't believe her and ultimately gaslit her into recanting her testimony. It wasn't until a female detective began noticing a pattern and believed the victim that they finally were able to put the pieces together and catch the r*pist. The show is relevant because it illustrates how discouraging women from entering certain professions has put us at a disadvantage, and why listening to victims is incredibly important.Full Transcripts, resources and more: hell.bio/S2E1— Have a story to share? This week's guest is Jordon. Jordon comes from a long family line of Mennonites but Jordon was bookish and musical and never quite fit in.He grew up in the church, but with two older brothers already having left the church, by 21 he was also out. Social media has been a popular place to share deconversion stories over the last few years, and sometimes so many people resonate with those posts that they go viral to some extent (being liked and shared by thousands of people). There's one that's being shared all over Facebook right now, written this week by a lady named Myndee Mack. Amanda comes from a rather surprising brand of Christianity she refers to as the “Serpent Seed Pentecostal Cult.” She goes into detail, and it's quite a ride.Various things happened throughout her adolescence that made her wonder if Christianity was true, but her mother would violently put a quick stop to those doubts. By 17, Amanda left home to live with a friend, but that couldn't last long.Amanda spent a decade trying out every religion under the sun but never found the one that could give real, solid answers.“Everybody thinks that they have the answer but nobody does.”Today, she knows she doesn't need the gods to dictate her life. Today we're joined by Ben Kirby, founder of Instagram account @PreachersNSneakers and author of "PreachersNSneakers: Authenticity in an Age of For-Profit Faith and (Wannabe) Celebrities," to discuss the state of the church when it comes to wealth and prosperity and how we elevate pastors to the role of celebrity. The PreachersNSneakers account posts photos of celebrity pastors, such as Steven Furtick and Mike Todd, wearing extremely expensive clothes and sneakers and leaves the questions up to us: Should we be glorifying this type of wealth when it comes to the role of pastor, and does this help or hurt prospective believers interested in the church? We discuss the relationships that have formed from this account, with some pastors engaging in good-hearted discussions with Ben about their clothing choices and others responding with more vitriol. We also discuss the two recent Hillsong documentaries that highlight the rise and fall of celebrity pastor Carl Lentz. Then we explain the seriousness of the pastoral calling and explain why many pastors who tend to show off their wealth also preach a toxic prosperity gospel with shallow and vapid messaging. --- Timecodes: (01:24) PreachersNSneakers (07:16) What is the point of the posts? Today Delano Squires, contributor to BlazeTV's "Fearless with Jason Whitlock" and Heritage Foundation research fellow, joins us to co-host a Biblical state of the union following yesterday's election. We go over our initial post-election thoughts, including DeSantis' massive Florida win. We discuss the Christian worldview issues plaguing our political thought – gender ideology, abortion, and the sexual revolution. Where does our faith fit into our policy views, and how can Christians do a better job standing up for what is biblically important and true when it comes to politics? We discuss the need to bring God into our arguments for human rights. Without pointing to a purposeful Creator, how are we do defend the reality behind abortion and gender ideology? We look at some political figures in the spotlight – Walker, Warnock, Trump and DeSantis – and discuss the prosperity gospel, the Christian view of the Republican Party, and many other topics in this extra long episode! --- Timecodes: [01:15] Initial post-election thoughts / DeSantis [09:37] Worldview issues of Christians / radical Left [19:57] Keeping God in our debates on abortion and gender [26:39] Conservatives need to call the Left's bluff [32:15] Abortion & 2022 state abortion props [51:00] Pastors addressing Genesis issues [1:00:49] Herschel Walker story and owning up to sin [1:05:20] Raphael Warnock & pastors misusing the Bible [1:10:16] Kenneth Copeland at Trump rally & prosperity gospel [1:19:47] Ron DeSantis and Trump [1:29:20] Christian view of the Republican Party [1:39:40] Close --- Today's Sponsors: Naturally It's Clean — visit naturallyitsclean.com/allie and use promo code "ALLIE" to receive 15% off your order.
