Will science ever come on top? Looking for a link we mentioned? It's here: https://linktr.ee/philosophyforourtimes In a survey of academic philosophers 85% identified as atheists. In Europe established religion has been in decline for a century; even in the States attendance is falling. Yet globally religion remains a potent force, and predictions of its demise have not materialised. Amongst those who have abandoned established religion new forms of spirituality, such as mindfulness and yoga are on the rise. Does religion, in all its many forms, provide a psychological support for humans that makes it essential - without which there is only the void?Scientist, author, and parapsychology researcher Rupert Sheldrake, Hegelian psychoanalyst Slavoj Zizek and Professor of History at University of Madison-Wisconsin Jennifer Ratner-Rosenhagen discuss whether the persistence of religion is an extended but ultimately temporary phenomenon. On "EWTN News Nightly" tonight: The Biden Administration is giving millions of dollars to international "organizations committed to the practice and spread of Atheism and Humanism." Congressional Republicans are not happy about it and they've written a letter demanding answers. Author Gordon Chang, joins to discuss the Vatican's deal with China regarding the appointment of bishops, including vocal criticism against it by Cardinal Joseph Zen, former Archbishop of Hong Kong. Additionally, Chang talks about President Xi's visit to Hong Kong last week to celebrate its 25th anniversary of being handed over from Britain, a report that the Pentagon is considering using hot air balloons as a way to track hypersonic missiles, and more. And according to a recent report from the Associated Press, more than 1 million voters in the past year have switched to the Republican party. Associate Professor of Political Science at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Colin Swearingen, joins to talk more about the 1 million voters changing parties and the factors that may be driving this shift. Finally this evening, an organization of religious sisters from around the world has launched a new initiative called 'New Leaders.' In today's episode of Talk Heathen, Secular Rarity is joined by Student Doctor Ben who will both discuss issues with callers ranging from antinatalization to messages from god.Michael in CA is our first caller who is a proponent of zero population growth and asks the hosts what they think is important about this topic. We know that if we continue to expand consumption, the ramifications will be bad. Is it moral to strive for zero population growth? If we knew the ideal number the population should be, how would we go about striving for that? How would we achieve minimizing bad outcomes when focussing on zero population growth? What policies would be put in place for this? If we could get rid of the negative consequences of population growth, yet still increase the population, would that be okay? Who gets to have children and who doesn't?Josiah from MO wants to discuss ways to deal with people telling him that he was never a true Christian, once they find out he is an atheist. Ben describes his story and mentions that it is oftentimes difficult for people to understand this news of change. When this happens, it is not a reflection of you, but rather their own thought process. You are the same person, but in their eyes, you violate what they perceived you as. Is your goal to convince your family and friends that you were a true Christian? Or is your goal more about being at true peace? When people state that you were never a true believer, sometimes it is a defense mechanism. Try to be patient with them; you might be the first person they have met who has deconverted. The best way to engage is with empathy. There are people that know what you are going through and are here to support you.John from India would like to talk about creation and believes that god created human beings, and humans created other humans through reproduction. He wants to know what justification people have for bringing people into the world. You don't need to believe in magic to bring someone into the world. If humans need to justify their reasoning for bringing a human into the world, is god bringing people into the world of suffering?Tom in MI, a deist, has some thoughts about ontological evidence or consciousness. He asks if the hosts think this is a good reason for god. He says there are two groups: atheists and theists. His philosophy teacher taught that we can't talk about something that we know nothing about. We can talk about something whether it is material, physical, or just a concept. Talking about a story is different than talking about a car in the driveway.Icon from Canada wants to know how to proceed getting a message to the world from god. The message is, “All religions are man made.” How do we know it was a deity that gave you this message? How did you receive this message and what were you doing at the time? Did anything meaningful or memorable happen in your life during that day? What was your mindset as you were doing this? That is all folks! Can we all get off this roller coaster?Yes, The Non-Prophets are talking about the worst Supreme Court decision next to all the next decisions they are likely going to make in the next few months. This time we decided to attack it a little differently. So come Sunday at 3:00 PM Central, sit back, relax, and we will all get through this together. For this episode we have a brand new conductor. Sorry Richard Gilliver, wish it was under better circumstances. He is joined by a newcomer, though you might remember him from Truth Wanted Live from UTSA's Secular Student Alliance, Zachary Shedd! Again sorry the timing sucks! Rounding out the rest of the stellar panel we have Genevieve from That GD Show, and Josh Entner from Bloody Good Film Podcast.First up we discuss what it was like for women before the Roe Vs. Wade decision. Was it a perfect utopia of super protected babies and everyone was happy? Was it a barren hellscape fill of fetuses and rusty hangers? We got this history for you so you can go into these discussions better armed. Are you one who gets your news and daily topics from the internet? I assume that if you are reading this right now that is at least sometimes a yes. We all know that privacy of a woman's body has gone away, but what people might not know is the dangers of even googling abortion topics. We look into some privacy and security tips to keep you safe and still fighting. So then what can we do? Well as a 501(c)(3) there are some limitations on what we can suggest. That doesn't mean we cannot look into what others are doing. There are people from all walks of life fighting for their rights, for your rights, for everyone's rights. From people marching on the streets to companies offering pay to those in states that made abortion illegal? This is something to keep an eye on!Finally this week, we figured we would change it up a little bit. To cleanse the pallet of all these sour tastes the week has brought us. We discuss a Looking Back of Churches v. Scholarships. Join us on a journey through time when Pope Pius X condemned the intellectual movement in the early 1900's. Who would have thought over 100 years later he would start winning? This will wrap it up for this week's episode of The Non-Prophets. “Sometimes, atheism is seen as a whites-only club by black people and in the United States, African American history, slavery and the civil rights movement are all closely tied to Christianity. Religion has very much become part of the tradition of black history and culture. Even when there is a strong atheist or secular humanist movement in the African diaspora, it has been ignored. In surveys of history, black expressions of humanism and secularism have been ignored by historians. African-Americans who come out as atheist may face a "prohibitive" social cost. Journalist Jamila Bey wrote, "It's difficult - if not impossible - to divorce religion from black culture." This social cost is not unique to blacks who leave Christianity, but also occurs among black Muslims who leave the religion. Some atheists who have left Islam have been disowned by family or received death threats. Black atheists in the United Kingdom face similar problems, where coming out as an atheist is associated with the fear of being "ostracised and demonised." For this reason London Black Atheists was formed in the United Kingdom by Clive Aruede and Lola Tinubu. At an atheist conference which took place next to a Christian conference in 2015, one of the black atheist attendees found herself attacked and accused by a black Christian woman for having a "slave mentality" and being "demon possessed." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support

I practice/teach Secular Buddhism because it makes the most sense to me.” I don't practice any religion. I don't do conservative theology. “Humanistic Buddhism has been described (in a Wikipedia review) as focusing on caring for the living, working for the benefit of others, compassion and altruism. It is concerned with issues of the world rather than on how to leave the world behind. It is concerned with benefiting others rather than oneself. It is an essentially optimistic belief in the core dignity of humans and their ability to transform themselves in a positive way. Similarly, Buddhist Humanism is described (also in a Wikipedia review) as a philosophical perspective based on the inherent dignity of all humans, their interdependence, and creating harmony through relationships. It is expressed through actions that contribute to the welfare of society, human rights, world peace and social justice.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support

May extraterrestrials shine down their hidden knowledge upon you. John's up first with a divine thought experiment. After an explanation of what a god is to him, our hosts offer their take on how likely that entity is to exist. John responds with an argument from popularity, since most people believe the Earth is round, and most people believe in a deity, aren't both likely to be true? It takes Dan & Calvin a few minutes to explain why not, but we get there eventually.Next up is returning caller Ransom, who's wondering if the UAP footage recently confirmed by the Pentagon is evidence of alien visitors. Everyone agrees that unidentified doesn't mean extraterrestrial, but Ransom wants to focus on how unlikely the phenomenon are to be advanced foreign (ie. Earthly) technology. While it is fascinating that even the governments of the world can't identify these, we're going to withhold belief until we have good reasons. Finally, VJ wants to chat about the shift towards religious extremism in India, and how the media frames these events to favor the Muslim worldview. Dan briefly describes the historical context for sectarian violence in the subcontinent, and we all agree that religion has a habit of encouraging folks to hate each other for no good reason. This is part two of a rebroadcast of a live panel discussion between two atheists and two theists. The panel featured our very own President of Watchman Fellowship James Walker. If you have not listened to the first part, we suggest listening to that broadcast first for more context for part two. How do we have productive conversations in our day and age with those who not only do not believe in God but are actively outspoken against God's existence? There is no easy, one-size-fits-all method for giving a defense for the hope that is in us by any means, but we believe this conversation can serve as at least one example. As you listen to the conversation, ask yourself how you might respond to the topics and questions discussed. Perhaps you have had these questions asked of you by non-Christians before. We hope this conversation can encourage and equip you to give a defense for your faith with gentleness and respect. We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses and people will indeed ask you some of what you'll hear on our broadcast today. So be ready! Special thanks to Jim Hall of the Atheist Edge YouTube channel for permission to rebroadcast this for Apologetics Profile.  CONTENT WARNING: This has been edited for time and to remove explicit language. We're not sure what's more impressive—that Larry Kirwan originated and co-wrote the Broadway hit Paradise Square, or that his early band with Pierce Turner was banned from the notorious New York punk rock club CBGB for being “too demonic.”Larry talks of how his unusual childhood in Wexford and his need to maneuver through different points of view--Republican vs Free State, Catholicism vs Atheism, Irish vs British—laid the foundation of an artistic vision that could see the world through the prism of others.A quest for adventure brings Larry to the U.S. where he dives into the underbelly of New York, Manhattan's Lower East Side, a hard-edged, multi-cultural neighborhood where somehow he thrived. And though he didn't know it at the time, Larry had already started doing his field research for the play that became Paradise Square. But before Broadway, there was Black 47, the band he formed with Chris Byrne in 1989 that would tour the country, guest star on top TV shows, and record music for 25 years. Larry shares the origin of the band's name, his approach to songwriting, how the music came together on stage, and tales from the rock and roll road. But while he was writing music, he was writing columns, essays, memoirs, novels, and plays. One of those plays was Hard Times, set in New York's ultimate interracial melting pot, the downtown neighborhood Five Points in the run-up to the disastrous Civil War Draft Riots. A Broadway producer who saw it at the intimate Cell Theater brought it to Broadway where it is now running on a grand scale as Paradise Square. We wrap up with a look into his latest novel, Rockaway Blue, set in the aftermath of 9/11 in a world of Irish American cops and firefighters on the fringes of NYC.This fall Larry will receive the Eugene O'Neill Lifetime Achievement Award from the Irish American Writers & Artists. It's always a hell of a party, so we hope to see you there! LinksWikipedia: Larry KirwanParadise SquareBlack 47Rockaway BlueCeltic Crush: Website  FacebookIrish American Writers & Artists

Psst. Hey there. Yeah you. Thanks for joining us for another episode of Truth Wanted! This week, Jason Sherwood emerges from behind the ACA camera like a curmudgeonly grizzly bear in spring to join Objectively Dan!This week's Patron of the Week is Allegedly Dave, but we'll need a citation before we can accept this assertion.John's up first with a silly reductionist argument for why abortion is the termination of human life, which is quickly dismantled by our hosts. Jason discriminates between terminating a life and terminating a pregnancy, and Dan points out that a clump of cells isn't suffering. This is kinda irrelevant John, even if a zygote is a person, bodily autonomy is still paramount, and no, I won't give you my kidney. We have Kaylen calling from the Land of the Rising Sun next, and he doesn't think there's a Biblical justification for theocracy. Both our hosts agree, and offer a few abhorrent examples from the Bible that reinforce Kaylen's perspective.Red's concerned about moving to a state where it's likely she'll be denied healthcare, and our hosts couldn't be more sympathetic. We'll chat about potential solutions for this current crisis, and how this recent decision will disproportionately affect those without the means to travel for healthcare.Loving the international callers tonight, Ricardo's from Italy, and he's struggling with picking your battles when having constructive conversations with theists. Dan thinks we have to examine our own motivations before we even approach using Street Epistemology to build better interactions. Our next caller is concerned about moving to a red state in the current political climate, and we're sympathetic. Fascist policies lead to a brain drain, learn from Nazi Germany folks. We're all better when we're all healthy and free.Nick's wondering how to talk to people who are so staunchly committed to their beliefs that they won't consider changing their mind. How do we get through to these people? Dan throws exposure therapy out there; normalize it, plant the seed, and hope it grows. Jason thinks you oughta ask yourself, “Is it worth it?” No one's required to be the arbiter of progressive policy Nick, but keep fighting the good fight. Finally we have Dylan who suggests replacing our legal system with a poll system where the internet decides what's correct. We've seen this episode of Black Mirror, but if you haven't, loyal TW viewer, check it out. It was a disaster. At this point however, anything might be better than having lifetime appointments to the highest court in the land in a time of a quickly shifting moral landscape. That's the show tonight. It's a dark day in the history of the United States, but activism and hope will see us through. Stay strong, vote, protest, do anything but remain silent. Catch you next week!
