A new approach to the theism-scientism divide rooted in a deeper form of atheism.Western philosophy is stuck in an irresolvable conflict between two approaches to the spiritual malaise of our times: either we need more God (the “turn to religion”) or less religion (the New Atheism). In Experiments in Mystical Atheism: Godless Epiphanies from Daoism to Spinoza and Beyond, (University of Chicago Press, 2024) Brook Ziporyn proposes an alternative that avoids both totalizing theomania and atomizing reductionism. What we need, he argues, is a deeper, more thoroughgoing, even religious rejection of God: an affirmative atheism without either a creator to provide meaning or finite creatures in need of it—a mystical atheism. In the legacies of Daoism and Buddhism as well as Spinoza, Nietzsche, and Bataille, Ziporyn discovers a critique of theism that develops into a new, positive sensibility—at once deeply atheist and richly religious. Experiments in Mystical Atheism argues that these “godless epiphanies” hold the key to renewing philosophy today. You can download the supplementary materials here. There exists a popular myth among skeptics and non-believers that Jesus did not really rise from the dead. What may have happened, they suggest, is that Peter and/or Paul experienced some kind of hallucination or vision of Jesus after His death. Our guest again this week on the Profile, resurrection scholar Dr. Gary Habermas, argues however, that in order for this hypothesis even to get off the ground, the skeptic must first establish the truth of a purely naturalistic worldview, which, Gary believes, cannot be done. Naturalistic refutations of Jesus' resurrection fail to provide any significant challenge to the narratives found in the four Gospel accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Dr. Gary Habermas has dedicated his professional life to the examination of the relevant historical, philosophical, and theological issues surrounding the death and resurrection of Jesus. His extensive list of publications and debates provides a thorough account of the current state of the issue. He has also contributed more than 60 chapters or articles to additional books, and over 100 articles and reviews in journals and other publications. In recent years, he has been a visiting or adjunct professor at about 15 different graduate schools and seminaries in the United States and abroad. Dr. Habermas is a Distinguished Research Professor of Apologetics and Philosophy. He is married to Eileen and they have seven children and 11 grandchildren. https://www.liberty.edu/divinity/seminary/faculty/gary-habermas/Gary's Books (2024), On the Resurrection: Refutations, Vol 2 of 4, Broadman & Holman, Academic, ISBN: 978-1-0877-7862-4, https://www.amazon.com/on-the-resurrection-volume-2/dp/108777862X Free Profiles from Watchman Fellowship! In this episode of The Non-Prophets, the panel reacts to the alarming halt in CDC communications, with the U.S. now flying blind on public health threats. Budget cuts, mass firings, and political meddling have silenced disease alerts that once informed doctors, hospitals, and the public. The team dives into how dismantling the CDC's outreach endangers lives, erodes trust in science, and shows contempt for evidence-based governance. It's not about public safety—it's about control.NPR, “CDC's public health warnings go dark after staff firings, media freeze”By Elijah Nouvelage, May 21, 2025https://www.npr.org/2025/05/21/nx-s1-5387723/cdc-communications-cuts-social-media-public-healthThe Non-Prophets 24.23.1 with Eli Slack, Kelley Laughlin, and AJAmerica's Disease Watchdog Has Gone Silent

Most of us have a friend or family member who'd call themself an atheist. But before you write that person off for their godless view of life, it's possible you may share something in common. This message looks at the final chapters of the book of Judges. It's a time when the Israelites turned their backs on God's leading. They still acknowledged him with their lips, but they'd become, in essence, a nation of atheists. And we often fall into that same trap.
