Historiansplaining: A historian tells you why everything you know is wrong
Unlocked after one year for patrons only: One moonlit night in 1853, an Iraqi excavator named Hormuzd Rassam and his team snuck into the hills outside of Mosul and began to uncover the massive palace of the last ancient Assyrian emperor, Ashurbanipal. Inside the palace was the largest trove of surviving documents from the ancient world that has ever been found. The massive library of over 30,000 tablets illuminated what had been the most mysterious empire of the Iron Age, brought to light the ancient masterpiece of the Epic of Gilgamesh, and provided the first window into the lost Near Eastern mythology that influenced the Biblical book of Genesis. While the discovery provided the greatest triumph of British imperial antiquarianism, in recent times Saddam Hussein and other Arab nationalists have attempted to reclaim its legacy by building a modern Library of Ashurbanipal. En 1879 se conoció, producto de las excavaciones realizadas en Irak, un hallazgo arqueológico de alto valor para la historia judía. La investigación fue liderada por el arqueólogo Hormuzd Rassam, el cual encontró un cilíndro de arcilla que data del año 539 a.C, en cuyo exterior se evidenció grabado un documento legal escrito en idioma acadio babilonio cuneiforme, que refleja la autorización real que le permitió a los judíos desterrados en Babilonia regresar a Jerusalén. Un decreto que también permitió el inicio de los trabajos para la reconstrucción de la ciudad y del Segundo Templo. El análisis de los expertos, determinó que se trataba del decreto emitido por el rey Persa Ciro II, el cual coincide con lo descrito en los libros bíblicos de Esdras, Nehemías e Isaías. Desde la interpretación hebrea, el rey Ciro en el primer año de su reinado fue incitado por Dios para decretar la reconstrucción del Templo en Jerusalén y permitir el regreso de los judíos cautivos a su tierra. Para los Hebreos el rey Ciro también ordenó devolver los recipientes sagrados que se habían tomado del primer Templo y aportó recursos para comprar los materiales necesarios para tal reconstrucción. Estos hechos fueron corroborados por el historiador Flavio Josefo, antes del año 100 d.C. El cilindro de Ciro, confirma el apoyo de este rey Persa al pueblo judío, razón por la cual se le reconoce con honor en el judaísmo. Actualmente el Cilindro de Ciro, forma parte de la colección del Museo Británico y eventualmente es transportado a diferentes exposiciones del mundo.

Gilgamesh is often said to be the oldest surviving great work of literature, with origins in the third millennium BC, and it passed through thousands of years on cuneiform tablets. Unlike epics of Greece and Rome, the intact story of Gilgamesh became lost to later generations until tablets were discovered by Hormuzd Rassam in 1853 near Mosul and later translated. Since then, many more tablets have been found and much of the text has been reassembled to convey the story of Gilgamesh, king of Uruk the sheepfold, and Enkidu who the gods created to stop Gilgamesh oppressing his people. Together they fight Humbaba, monstrous guardian of the Cedar Forest, and kill the Bull of Heaven, for which the gods make Enkidu mortally ill. Gilgamesh goes on a long journey as he tries unsuccessfully to learn how to live forever, learning about the Great Deluge on the way, but his remarkable building works guarantee that his fame will last long after his death.
