Allison Russell: The Returner

I'm lucky to have a special relationship with Allison Russell; although her career is skyrocketing right now, she remembers where she comes from and as an early supporter of her solo work, she's been so kind to always make time for me. I originally did this interview for The Sunday Show (my new show on Indie88 from 10am-1pm highlighting singer-songwriters, roots, blues, soul, and Americana musicians. We covered so much ground, touching on everything from her new single, her amazing experience at the Gorge a few weekends back with Joni Mitchell and friends, pride and black music month, that I felt compelled to share this interview here as well. The four-time GRAMMY-nominated singer, songwriter, poet, activist, and multi-instrumentalist has announced her new album, The Returner. The record will be released on September 8th, 2023 via Fantasy Records. She's already shared the title-track from the album. The Returner was written and co-produced by Allison along with dim star (her partner JT Nero and Drew Lindsay) and was recorded over Solstice week in December 2022 at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles, CA. It features Russell's “Rainbow Coalition” band of all-female musicians along with special guest appearances from the legendary Wendy & Lisa, Brandi Carlile, Brandy Clark, and Hozier.  WATCH / SHARE “THE RETURNER” HERE BUY / STREAM “THE RETURNER” HERE Since the release of Outside Child, her debut solo LP two years ago, Russell's often devastating, deeply moving, cathartic celebration of survivor's joy has become one of the most acclaimed albums of the past 10 years. Now comes the second chapter in herstory, The Returner, a body-shaking, mind-expanding, soulful expression of liberation, love, and self-respect that serves as a fierce declaration of joy for all survivors that have made it to the other side. Allison, JT, and Drew built The Returner from the bottom up with a rhythm-first, genre-fluid approach. The improvisational energy of great female artists sparked the album's fierce joy, and provided a wider canvas for Allison's immense, unlimited talent. In all, the new album doesn't just deliver on the promise of the last two years, it exceeds all reasonable (and unreasonable) expectations and affirms Allison Russell's place among music's most vital artists⎯and The Returner, as one of 2023's most essential recordings. Toronto is the place this week as I sit in with Josie Dye, morning DJ at Indie88 and talk about all things radio! From show content to concert festivals, Josie talks about the hustle and grit it takes to not only get into the radio business but staying in the business as well. This natural storyteller is honest and forthright about everything from career train wrecks to broadcast success stories (with a special nod to one of our fave radio consultant Steve Reynolds of Reynolds Group Radio); how content and the business of impact and storytelling matter in radio; and all about her brand new podcast 'Cynthia and Josie's Unmentionables' - so good! We also talk about her television work with Oh So Cosmo and CMT Canada; her genuine love of all music festivals (and that would also include water sports - listen in and find out!); those very early beginnings in Canadian radio; juggling motherhood and work, plus her involvement with a very special charity Socks 4 the Streets, which helps the homeless in Canada.  Bring along your love of radio and join us!About the Spotlight Conversations podcast:Join me as I invite friends inside my cozy linoleum free recording studio to talk all about media. Interview with Begonia

We had the pleasure of interviewing Begonia over Zoom video!Powder Blue, the highly anticipated new album from Begonia—the solo project of alt-pop Canadian artist Alexa Dirks—is out now on Birthday Cake Records. The album was written and produced by Begonia, Matt Peters and Matthew Schellenberg (Royal Canoe) with contributions from Jason Agel (Björk, Kelly Clarkson, Prince) and Joe LaPorta (FKA twigs, beabadoobee, Solange). The new collection of songs wrestles with life's thornier moments in more evocative ways. When describing the namesake behind the new album, Powder Blue, Begonia turns to vivid imagery: her baby blanket, the airiness of clouds on a summer day, chlorine-filled water in a hotel pool, circa-1970s Elvis Presley wearing an ill-fitting jumpsuit and her collection of faded denim jackets.Ahead of the project, Begonia shared album singles “Married By Elvis,” “Cold Night” and “Right Here” which received critical acclaim from CBC, Wonderland, Line of Best Fit, Indie88, Daily Star and Globe & Mail.In celebration of the new album, Begonia is set for a run of U.S. shows in select cities this spring. The dates include a performance at New York's Mercury Lounge as well as further shows at Los Angeles' Hotel Cafe, Nashville's The Basement, Portland's Hawthorne Lounge and Seattle's Sunset Tavern. More dates to be announced soon.Powder Blue follows Begonia's 2017 EP Lady In Mind and debut album Fear, released in 2019 to widespread critical praise. Fear received a nomination for Alternative Album of the Year at the 2019 Juno Awards and also earned Begonia a nod for Polaris Music Prize. As Begonia, Alexa Dirks creates bold, surprising pop that is tempered with sensitivity and wisdom. In her music, Begonia leans hard into a sense of arrival. Whether it's learning to come into her own or processing a brutal heartbreak, Dirks' intimate lyrics and audacious sound allows for her audience to relate to the messiness of life with an honesty that is refreshing. Despite the turmoil from which it emerged, Powder Blue represents Dirks feeling settled by coming to terms with her past and present—from religious conflict to exploring sexuality and managing mental health, the new album finds Dirks wrestling with life's thornier moments in more evocative ways.We want to hear from you! She is a former host for 102.1 The Edge in Toronto where she quite literally "worked her way up the ladder" from receptionist to morning show.  In this episode of the Women in Media Podcast, Mel talks about being real with her listeners during a global pandemic with divided opinions and unexpected highs and lows. Melani touches on how she worried about starting a family and how it would affect her personality on-air. She also talks about how insecure a radio job can be, especially when you're pregnant for the second time. She reflects on a difficult experience at the Edge when she was fired shortly after she got pregnant with her second daughter, Margot. Melani and I first crossed paths at The Edge  where I worked part-time during my time at FM96 in London. I'm lucky enough to call her a colleague again at Indie88 and I'm not lying when I say she may be the nicest person I've ever met in Canadian radio! The first episode featuring radio host and television personality Josie Dye is available now with another set to launch on International Women's Day March 8th. The Women In Media podcast examines the powerhouse of women in media; from the music and entertainment industry to broadcast, sports and everything in between. Covering a variety of topics with inspiring female leaders including; Josie Dye (Canadian radio and TV personality), Tracy Martin (President, Canadian Country Music Association Awards), Liz Trinnear (LA correspondent for eTalk on CTV), Rida Naser (Program Director and Host, SiriusXM US) and many more, host Sarah Burke will explore the collective challenges women face in a male-dominated industry through thoughtful female-led discussion, influential guests and personal stories covering topics like bullying, motherhood, diversity and inclusivity.“Based on our physiology alone, women face different challenges than men do in their professional lives,” shares Burke. “I've always been particularly intrigued by how women handle the spotlight in the media. We have to fail, recover and rebuild the same way that everyone else does, but with a bigger audience; more eyes are watching. The media (understandably) loves to promote certain topics along with a given day or month with a hashtag or annual celebration, and I'm certainly guilty of participating. While I'm launching during Women's History Month and excited to share a new episode on International Women's Day, I'm here to remind women to brag about their accomplishments all year long! It's no secret that we often don't feel like we should or can, but we MUST!”On each episode of the Women In Media podcast, guests reveal and discuss the obstacles and trials they have faced as they built their careers; the important lessons they have learned along the way and share helpful advice and insight for fellow women, trailblazers, entrepreneurs and more.Releasing new episodes every other Monday (beginning March 8th), the Women In Media podcast is accessible on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and everywhere you listen. In this episode, we talk to Toronto indie band MONOWHALES.Fuelled by a passionate desire to create a sound as unapologetic and powerful as the personalities within the band, pop-infused indie rock quartet MONOWHALES have taken the experiences gained fighting their way up the ranks of Toronto’s highly competitive music scene. You can find them setting fire to every stage in the Greater Toronto Area and across the country. You can also find them heavily featured on the new smash NETFLIX series “SPINNING OUT” where the band's music can be heard and the band themselves make a cameo. They are turning heads everywhere they go and the sky really is the limit for them. I can honestly say that I’ve never talked about K-OS and Marshall McCluhan in the same conversation, but I’m glad we went there!

Recently, Toronto's classic rock station Q107 decided to do a shift in the music they play. Added to their classic rock playlist were the hits of the 90s like Nirvana, Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog. Most surprisingly, 'classic rock sounding' hits of the 2010s also made it into the playlist, like Black Keys and The Sheepdogs. What does this mean for rock radio in Toronto, where several stations are already playing modern rock music, and now more and more stations are playing similar songs. And...what's going on with rock radio in general? Radio Dale is the podcast about music, musicians and the Canadian music industry from our unique perspective at the Dale Speaking offices. We help bring indie and established acts to radio, and spread the word online, as well as develop their careers in today's ever-changing music business. This podcast gives away some of our best information for free, and serves as the 'radio show' the broadcast the ideas, observations and insights we discover every day working with Canadian and International artists. THE EPISODE: THIS WEEK IN MUSIC HISTORY: ...nothing compares to Sinead O'Connor! Discovered and shared from http://thisdayinmusic.com WHO CHARTED! ...the Whitehorse CBC Searchlight regional finalists! ROO'S 60 SECOND TIP: ...your Facebook Fan Page! FEATURED SONG: We helped this band get to their first #1 hit in Canada despite having no radio support from the USA! Canada has adopted this amazing American rock band, and they're back with a new single. It's Rival Sons with 'Open My Eyes' from their upcoming album 'Great Western Valkyrie.' ROUNDTABLE: Q107, The Edge, Indie88, Y108, The Rock, HTZ Fm...although not all in Toronto, depending where you live in the city you can tune into most or all of these rock stations. It used to be that switching to Q meant switching back in time, and you wouldn't hear the hits of the 90s, 2000s and 2010s. Recently, everything changed. You 'might' hear Black Keys on all six of these stations now. What does that mean for rock radio in Toronto? And what does it say about rock in Toronto in general? ---- THE MUSIC: Rival Sons - Open My Eyes (Feature) Web: http://rivalsons.com Polite Fiction - Come A Little Closer (Intro) Web: http://politefiction.bandcamp.com Gloryhound - Let You Down Again (behind This Week In Music History) Web: http://gloryhoundband.com Toob - Sweet Harmony (behind This Week On The Charts) Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/toob-music Elise LeGrow - No Good Woman (First segment of opening theme) RADIO DALE LOGOS courtesy of /r/picrequests on Reddit.
