The shooter, identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best, was shot and killed by Secret Service agents as he opened fire near a security checkpoint close to the White House at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The mentally disturbed man reached into a bag, pulled out a weapon, and began firing. Trump will send 5,000 troops to Poland President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland. The president noted that his decision was based on the election last year of Poland's conservative President Karol Nawrocki. Presently, the United States has 80,000 troops stationed in Europe, 10,000 of which are in Poland, according to a Council on Foreign Relations analysis.  The largest U.S. presence is in Germany, with more than 38,000 troops. Should recently naturalized citizens hold office? Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace of South Carolina  who is also running to be the Palmetto State's next governor, made headlines for introducing a joint resolution to prevent recently naturalized citizens from holding office. Mace is calling for her resolution to be passed in the form of a constitutional amendment. In her words: “The American people deserve leaders who put America first. This amendment makes sure of it.” Oklahoma makes it a felony to traffic Abortion Kill Pills Oklahoma Republican Governor Kevin Stitt signed a bill that makes it a felony to traffic Abortion Kill Pills into the state for the purpose of causing an illegal abortion, reports Newson6. Punishments range up to 10 years in prison and a $100,000 fine, or both. Republican State Senator David Bullard commented on the bill. He said, “We have worked hard to eliminate this enslavement of people. The trafficking of the abortion pill is no different than human trafficking and possibly worse. It is the largest killer of babies and the greatest threat to motherhood.”  Reddest states gain population; Bluest states lose America's “reddest” or most conservative states are gaining population and the bluest states are losing fastest. Last year, South Carolina, Idaho, and Tennessee were the fastest gainers on a resident per capita basis. By contrast, New York, California, and Maryland were the biggest losers. Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, and Michigan also lost residents in 2025. Condominium prices sinking across America Condo prices are sinking fast around the nation. A Denver condominium peaked at $280,000 in 2022 (adjusted for inflation), up from $165,000 in 2009. Already that $280,000 condo in 2022 (valued in 2009 dollars) has dropped off to a $202,000 value (in 2009 dollars). That's a 28 percent collapse in just four years. Florida and California condominium prices are sinking even faster. Condo prices usually run ahead of other real estate when the bubbles deflate. U.S. economy is faltering Americans are more pessimistic than ever concerning their views on the economy, while at the same time Wall Street is more euphoric than ever! The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index has dipped to an all-time low — the lowest in 65 years of American history. Meanwhile, the NASDAQ Composite Index has exploded to over 26,300. That's a whopping 450 percent increase from 10 years ago — at the same time that the nation's Gross Domestic Product only increased 200 percent.  Elon Musk on track to become Earth's first trillionaire And finally, as of yesterday, Elon Musk's net worth clocks in at $828 billion, according to the Forbes index. Economists say he's on his way to become the first trillionaire on Earth, reports The Daily Star. Elon's rocket, satellite and Artificial Intelligence empire is officially headed for the U.S. stock market, filing its prospectus with regulators. Google's Larry Page and Sergey Brin are hovering around $300 billion, and Amazon's Jeff Bezos sits at $270 billion on the Forbes billionaire list. Are we witnessing rising Islamic militancy in Bangladesh? Or could it become a model for other developing countries? A nationwide celebration is underway. It's Victory Day for Bangladesh's 176 million people. Fifty-four years ago today -- December 16th, 1971 -- the former state of East Pakistan became the modern, independent nation of Bangladesh.   But few people are pleased with the trajectory Bangladesh is currently on. What's been happening this past 15 months has shaken this country to its core. On August 5th, 2024 protests over government job quotas escalated into a wider anti-government movement, with a resulting violent crackdown leading to the ousting of the long-time ruler, Sheikh Hasina. She now faces the death penalty if she returns. Her whole political party, the Awami League, has been banned too.   Now the Muslim-majority state faces perhaps the most significant fork-in-the-road moment since its independence. The February 2026 election. Can the caretaker leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus pull it off? Will it be free and fair?  It is possible that stability and democracy will be restored. It is also possible that an Islamist takeover and the cancellation of Democracy will ensue. Following the rather grim comedy of Boris Johnson, the Conservatives gave Britain the even more ridiculous spectacle of Liz Truss. She proceeded to push the British economy to the edge of the abyss, aided and abetted by her Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi ‘Kamikwasi' Kwarteng. Fortunately, her colleagues realised what a disastrous mess the Tory membership had made electing Truss leader, and chucked her out again, establishing a new record, previously held by George Canning since 1827, for the shortest tenure of any Prime Minister in office.To the delight of the Daily Star, which livestreamed a lettuce and a photo of Liz Truss, to see whether she could outlast the lettuce, it was the vegetable that won.It was Rishi Sunak who followed her into office, and he worked hard with his Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to get the economy back on its feet. Unfortunately, they went back to the beginning of this long period of Tory rule, to austerity politics. They worked no better second time around than first and only cut the public deficit by a little over half, leaving debt still climbing. Meanwhile, immigration was raising its head again as a key question. Oddly enough, net migration – people in less people out – had risen since Brexit, which many had backed as a way to limit migration in the first place. The new election took place on 4 July 2022. It was an election of fragmentation, with the old dominant parties of Labour and the Tories plumbing new depths of their joint share of the popular vote, while smaller parties – the Liberal Democrats, the Greens and the new kids on the block, Nigel Farage's Reform UK, surging forward.The success of Reform UK was the most striking. He was co-recipient of the Pax Christi International Peace Award for his efforts to bring peace and reconciliation to the Middle East, and has served on the advisory boards of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Harvard Divinity School, and Northwestern University in Qatar. Khouri is also a syndicated columnist with Agence Global syndicate (USA), an author, and a frequent analyst and commentator in international media, including BBC, Aljazeera, NPR, and CNN. He is the co-editor of the book: 'Understanding Hamas: And Why That Matters.' Helena Cobban is a writer and researcher on international affairs who lives in Washington DC. In 1984, Cambridge U.P. published her seminal study The Palestinian Liberation Organisation. Three of her six other sole-authored books dealt with political and strategic developments in the Arab-Israeli theater, the rest with more global matters. For 17 years she contributed a regular column on global issues to The Christian Science Monitor and Al-Hayat (London).In 2010 she founded Just World Books, which has published ground-breaking titles by Palestinian, Zionism-questioning Jewish, and other authors; and in 2016 she was a co-founder of Just World Educational, which she now serves as president.
