The Beef Edge
The benefits of grass-white clover and multi-species sward systems

The Beef Edge

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 2, 2025 13:58

Teagasc researcher, Sarah Burke, is on this week's Beef edge podcast to discuss her latest research on grass-white clover and multi-species sward systems.  A source of inefficiency in beef cattle production systems is the failure to meet live weight targets throughout the animals' lifetime, resulting in animals being older at slaughter. Consequently, lifetime production costs, which are mainly feed-related, and the associated environmental emissions, particularly methane and nitrogen, are increased.  Nationally, mean age at slaughter for late-maturing suckler-bred steers, the predominant breed type from the suckler herd, is 28-months. This is five months later than achieved in grass-based research systems and high-performing commercial farms. Within beef production systems, older animals at slaughter are generally less profitable and have a substantially higher environmental footprint. Sarah highlights that for many decades, perennial ryegrass has been the dominant, sometimes the only, constituent included in grass seed mixtures used to renew grassland. More recently, white clover has been included. Compared to ‘grass' based swards, Teagasc Grange research has shown the capacity of white clover inclusion to fix atmospheric N, resulting in annual savings of chemical fertiliser, equivalent to 100-150kg N/ha, for beef cattle grazing systems.  There is now increasing interest in using ‘multi-species' swards to further exploit complementarity between pasture species which include:·      grasses - perennial ryegrass and other grasses·      legumes - white and red clover·      herbs/forbs - e.g chicory and plantain Sarah's research investigated the growth and carcass characteristics of late-maturing suckler steers genetically divergent for carcass fatness, produced on grass-white clover and multi-species sward systems and finished at 19, 23 or 26 months of age.  It was based on the two years data collected to date at Teagasc Grange and it concluded that growth performance of suckler beef cattle grazing grass-clover and multi-species swards, or offered silages conserved from these pastures, was similar. Sarah also discussed how the Fat-EBV steers achieved greater carcass fat scores and a similar carcass weight compared to lean-EBV steers. Sarah will be presenting her research at the British Society of Animal Science 2025 conference next week 8-10 April in Salthill in Galway where the theme will be ‘Supporting Livestock's Role in a Global Society'. For further details go to: https://www.bsas.org.uk/conference-2025 For more episodes from the Beef Edge podcast, visit the show page at:https://www.teagasc.ie/thebeefedge Produced on behalf of Teagasc by LastCastMedia.com

More About Mary Jo Eustace: Mary Jo Eustace is an award winning TV host, a best-selling author and trained chef, who has cooked her way through 800 episodes of lifestyle programming in the US and Canada. Tabloid fodder for two decades via a high profile divorce, she has utilized her notoriety globally to create multiple platforms for personal empowerment. She admits that the work can be frustrating, especially when students don't seem to appreciate the demands of the job, but she encourages educators to take students' sometimes negative attitudes as challenges rather than personal insults. After all, this might be the year when you help that resistant student discover an interest in learning.  Sarah advises educators to take care of themselves, too, with a healthy work/life balance. She has learned over the last decade that the old adage is true - you can't fill anyone's cup if yours is empty. She credits OEA for helping our state's educators maintain healthy work hours, and she counsels educators to be careful of extra time commitments that take them away from home, family, and friends. In celebration of International Women's Day, host Sarah Burke shares a solo episode announcing the Women in Media Network. On the three-year anniversary of the Women in Media Podcast, today, Canadian media personality and producer Sarah Burke is excited to announce the launch of the Women In Media Network. The Women in Media Network (WIMN) is a new home for women and gender-diverse podcasters on a mission to uplift, inspire, and empower. Her story, spanning over fifteen years in media, is not just her own, but a mirror to the experiences of countless women in media. Facing challenges that are all too common – being undervalued, underpaid, and often belittled in male-dominated workspaces, Sarah took matters into her own hands with a goal to bring others along. What first began as a single podcast where media personalities could share their stories and celebrate their successes without judgment, now holds a guest list of 75 incredible women and gender-diverse individuals and has bloomed into a collective of aligned minds. This led to the birth of WIMN, an organization dedicated to empowering women through podcasting, content creation, and education within a supportive community.  Burke's vision for WIMN is more than just an advocacy group; it's a movement. “It's about transforming the media landscape into a diverse and equitable arena where women's voices are not just heard, but are influential,” explains Burke. “The media landscape is in a perpetual state of turbulence right now, and I'm excited about empowering creators with newfound freedom from the organizations they were once tied to, and the power to make decisions regarding their content.” Burke plans to expand the network with a special dedication to help eliminate financial barriers and empower Black voices, Indigenous voices, and other voices of colour. Burke's commitment to this cause is not just about challenging the status quo, but rewriting it. Under her leadership, WIMN serves as a sanctuary to amplify underrepresented voices, share wisdom, and create a better future for content creators in the process. Sarah's journey and the work of WIMN hope to light the path for a future where every creator maintains ownership of their own content, unencumbered by the barriers of the past. The WIMN is proud to amplify charitable initiatives in support of organizations which provide support to women and girls who have been subjected to violence, trafficking and/or homelessness. In honour of Women's History Month, Sarah will be donating proceeds from WIMN merchandise to The London Abused Women Centre, in the community where she not only studied media, but became a media personality. Stay tuned for more about merchandise, but for now, Sarah encourages donations to the London Abused Women's Centre HERE, and also to the Assaulted Women's Helpline, a free, anonymous telephone line for women in Ontario experiencing any form of abuse. Then, they cover everything from the benefits of eating peanut butter, and the history of Botox to the changing landscape of streaming and its impact on music consumption. Then, Jann turns to our in-house pop culture specialist, Caitlin Green, for a discussion about the Golden Globes! The conversation also delves into the disasters on the red carpet and the viral lip-reading incident involving Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift. Of course, there's a short discussion about outfits and unattainable beauty standards.
