On episode 57, Sam and Adrian dig into two stories making waves in their respective corners of the outdoor world before launching into an unplanned fifth installment of Everest season coverage and a full listener mailbag.Sam kicks things off with a story from his own week on Mount Shasta, where he watched runner Sarah Burke blow past his group near the summit and set a new women's unsupported FKT — Horse Camp to summit in 2 hours and 10 seconds, breaking the previous mark of roughly 2:13. The moment sends him down a rabbit hole into Shasta's surprisingly deep speed-record history, from John Muir's 4:10 ascent in 1874 to Norman Clyde's 2:43 in 1923, and into a broader conversation with Adrian about what "unsupported" really means when guided teams and other climbers are nearby to help if something goes wrong. Adrian brings his own story from Yosemite, where guidebook author Eric Sloan has added roughly 16 new bolts to the first three pitches of the famous Snake Dike route on Half Dome, shrinking runouts that once stretched 50 to 100 feet down to just 10 or 12. The move has reignited a long-simmering debate over who gets to decide how safe a historic climb should be, and both hosts land on the same conclusion: it's a conversation best settled locally, by the climbing community itself, rather than dictated from the top down. From there, the two pivot into a story too big to leave out of the season: a fifth, unplanned Everest episode.Hillary Dawa's Six-Day Survival on Everest — A Sherpa originally hired as a Camp Two cook for the small operator Himalayan Traverse Adventure was put on a summit push he wasn't trained or equipped for. On the descent, with the team low on oxygen and one client struggling badly, Dawa was left seated near the Yellow Band while the rest of the group continued down — and no apparent search effort followed. He spent six days descending alone, fell into a crevasse near 18,000 feet and broke his femur, survived two days trapped before an avalanche gave him a way out, and was eventually spotted crawling through the bottom of the icefall by a trash-cleanup crew before being helicoptered to safety. What Went Wrong — and What Needs to Change — Sam and Adrian walk through the chain of decisions that led to the accident, from the irresponsibility of putting an undertrained worker on a summit push to the company's failure to search once he went missing. They push for changes that outlast this season's headlines: minimum experience standards at every level of a team, an independent rescue presence on the mountain, and government oversight enforcing basic rules at every camp.Listener Mailbag: Suffering, Decision-Making, and the Case for a Mountain Guide — Tying directly back to the Dawa story, Adrian breaks down how to tell productive suffering from real danger at altitude, using headache severity as a rough gauge. Both hosts agree that knowing where that gray-area line sits is exactly the judgment call a certified, IFMGA/AMGA-trained mountain guide is built to make — and what was missing on Dawa's team.Listener Mailbag: Quick Hits — Rounding out the episode: theft at high-altitude camps (rare for passports and valuables, more common as opportunistic gear grabs), training mental toughness through repeated exposure to difficulty and failure, Adrian's picks for a favorite 8,000-meter peak beyond Everest (Cho Oyu for safety and beauty, Makalu for those chasing something wilder), techniques for safely passing on crowded fixed lines, preventing snow blindness through consistent eye protection, and a candid rundown of how mountaineers manage GI distress at altitude. With Everest properly wrapped, Sam and Adrian are turning toward guest episodes and the approaching Karakoram season, with K2 and the rest of Pakistan's big peaks on deck.Follow us on Instagram @duffelshufflepodcast and visit www.duffelshufflepodcast.com to join our mailing list. The Duffel Shuffle Podcast is supported by Alpenglow Expeditions, an internationally renowned mountain guide service based in Lake Tahoe, California. We have one helluva guest for you this week! Jann Arden, Caitlin Green and Sarah Burke welcome television host and best-selling author Mary Jo Eustace. Jann and MJ begin with their origin story, the evolution of their careers, and the challenges and triumphs of aging. They discuss the impact of personal experiences in the public eye, like divorce and public scrutiny, and how they have transformed pain into empowerment. They also discuss the pursuit of purpose in the later stages of life, the excitement of participating in reality TV, the importance of connection and empathy, and the complexities of modern dating. More About Mary Jo Eustace: Mary Jo Eustace is an award winning TV host, a best-selling author and trained chef, who has cooked her way through 800 episodes of lifestyle programming in the US and Canada. Tabloid fodder for two decades via a high profile divorce, she has utilized her notoriety globally to create multiple platforms for personal empowerment. Her podcast Senior Bitches charts internationally, highlighting women over 55 who are changing the landscape around conventional aging. A fierce advocate of anti-agism, Mary Jo roams the planet, connecting with connectors, celebrities and characters who share their secrets to a life well lived. Her new show Day Trippin for PBS will commence filming in early 2025. MJ became a household name in Canada in the late '90s when hosting more than 600 episodes of the cult TV cooking show What's for Dinner with her co-host, the late Ken Kostick. Later entangled in a tabloid tempest — with her then-husband Dean McDermott and Tori Spelling — she managed to always keep her humour intact and strip-mined her misery for others' benefit in the funny, poignant survival guide, Divorce Sucks: What to Do When Irreconcilable Differences, Lawyer Fees, and Your Ex's Hollywood Wife Make You Miserable.  MJ is funny and candid about her own fears (and joys) of getting older, and will offer a no-holds-barred look at embracing the next chapter with honesty, humor, and a healthy dose of self-discovery. As a television host, author, and podcast personality, she has discussed topics like divorce, single parenting, and reinvention, resonating with audiences by offering a mix of wit, honesty, and resilience in navigating tough moments. Her openness about her journey has made her a voice of empowerment for those facing similar struggles. First half was experimental and free flowing - she made her stamp through her fluid style while wielding a pro model of her own; Marie Des Neiges. Then the half-time came–she must have had some of the bugs bunny space jam placebo water before going on court cause she dominated the second half. X-games Gold medalist, customized outfits, back to back Olympic silver medals, star of a netflix documentary, had her own event in memory of Sarah Burke, all of this while being a mother. In this episode, Jann Arden, Caitlin Green and Sarah Burke speak to Lori Dyan, also known as Tarot Lori, a tarot card reader with 35 years of experience. They discuss the origins of Lori's interest in tarot, the misconceptions surrounding tarot reading, the popularity of moon rituals and the upcoming release of Lori's book, 'Burn Your Sh*t: The Life-Changing Magic of Rituals.' The conversation highlights the importance of rituals and the role of tarot in providing guidance and empowerment. They explore the idea that humans have the potential to expand and be braver in their lives, and how rituals like tarot and astrology can help connect us. The conversation concludes with a tarot card reading for each of the hosts. This week's episode is brought to you by the home and auto insurance brand Canadians trust most—Intact Insurance. A note from Lori on her upcoming book: Rituals are routines infused with loving intention. The empowerment and unburdening they provide is immense and undeniable. Whether you're releasing something (or someone) with a Full Moon ritual, elevating your morning skincare routine with a ceremony of self-love or celebrating a milestone moment, rituals can enrich—and even transform—your life.  Burn Your Sh*t guides readers to discover what is possible (and the work that needs to be done) with rituals to help them step into their potential and make their own magic. Full Moons are an opportunity to let go of limiting beliefs, negative self-talk or any other bad mojo that's hanging around. Crystals can promote healing and boost manifesting. Sacred geometry offers ancient wisdom to amplify ambitions. Sleeping on top of intentions can turn your life around.  You can easily customize rituals to meet you where you're at in any given moment—from fuelling your body to finding your soulmate. With the right rituals, you can face challenges with clarity, connect to your inner wisdom and become the designer of your dreams.  Find out more about Lori Dyan and her book: https://www.tarotlori.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. They also touch on the impact of social media and the future of Taylor Swift's career. They also touch on the TV show 'Hacks' and their love for the Toronto Maple Leafs (well some more than others, anyway). The conversation concludes with a segment on disability that picks up another perspective on our recent episode about medical assistance in dying (MAID) and the importance of listening to different perspectives. Our guest is Mitchell Tremblay, an advocate who's fighting for a better future for all Canadians with disabilities Mitchell has been in and out of hospitals since he was 17, diagnosed with social anxiety, generalized anxiety, PTSD and personality disorders. He was homeless by age 18 and has since been homeless 7 times.  A note from Mitchell: I am just one voice of many, at least 1.5 million Canadians with disabilities are in legislated poverty. We have advocates who've ended their lives. It's so hard to mobilize with mobility issues and protests are non existent yet we are the largest minority in Canada. His single wish for those who have been unaware about this situation in Canada is to listen & learn, so we invite you to follow along with Mitchell and we thank him for joining us this week. At 42 years old now, Mitchell is one of the strongest voices advocating for the disabled community. Blaine discusses educator experiences from a mid-career perspective this week with his guest Sarah Burke, a middle-school science teacher at Stanfied Secondary School. In her tenth year of teaching, Sarah is still in awe of the impact educators have on students and their lives. She admits that the work can be frustrating, especially when students don't seem to appreciate the demands of the job, but she encourages educators to take students' sometimes negative attitudes as challenges rather than personal insults. After all, this might be the year when you help that resistant student discover an interest in learning.  Sarah advises educators to take care of themselves, too, with a healthy work/life balance. She has learned over the last decade that the old adage is true - you can't fill anyone's cup if yours is empty. She credits OEA for helping our state's educators maintain healthy work hours, and she counsels educators to be careful of extra time commitments that take them away from home, family, and friends. Sarah's personal self-care includes a special memorabilia box where she keeps emails and letters from students and parents, a reminder of why she continues her career as an educator.    Resources 6 Ways to Create Work-Life Balance OEA Introduction to Mindfulness webinar on May 1st with Talia Akre (Multnomah ESD EA) OEA Self-Paced Module Stress Management: Using Body Wisdom to Calm the Stressed Brain OEA Grow is a proud member of the Labor Radio Podcast Network
