March 2020 changed the lives of everyone around the around. We were all worried about the spread of COVID-19, fascinated with R number and hoping lockdowns would not last long.Working in the background was the UL team from MASCI (Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science and Industry) who as part of the Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group (IEMAG), provided expert advice, real-time information and forecast models to the Chief Medical Officer and NPHET.In this podcast you will hear from the award-winning UL team, led by MACSI Director Professor James Gleeson who developed the SEIR model, leading to the monitoring of restrictions, vaccinations and tracking the path of the virus throughout Ireland, disseminating findings to tackle real world problems.Former chair of IEMAG, Prof Philip Nolan discusses the importance of MACSI's work the decision-making process to inform a national response to a global pandemic.Recorded by GKMedia.ie

Digital transformation impacts many areas of our lives and has given rise to a booming digital economy. This new commodity of data is continually growing and changing. The challenge however, is how this digital transformation can be harnessed to do what we already do, but much better. Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science & Industry (MACSI) and Confirm, the SFI Research Centre for Smart Manufacturing hosted a panel of experts to tackle the topic: Chris Decubber, Technical Director at the European Factories of the Future Research Association (EFFRA), Dr Johan S Carlson, Director of the Fraunhofer-Chalmers Research Centre for Industrial Mathematics, Dr Joanna Jordan, Institute for Mathematical Innovation, University of Bath, Professor Barry O'Sullivan, Director of Insight the SFI Centre for Data Analytics, Prof James Gleeson, Co-Director of MACSI.
Speaker: Prof. S. O'Brien Abstract: In the context of the Macsi industrial mathematics group, we look at the types of problems which have arisen from industrial collaboration and examine a couple of these in detail. In particular, we look at a mathematical model for etching glass with acids which arose from a study group with industry problem presented by Waterford Crystal.
