In an age marked by political polarisation, moral confusion, and deep mistrust of institutions, what does it mean to live well together? Are we primarily citizens of the state, autonomous individuals, or something else entirely? Join Michael at the 27th Annual Tinsley Lecture on 21 May as he explores the distinctive political vision offered by Christian faith in Subjects and Citizens – What Christianity Offers a Fractured Public Square. About the Guest: Professor Maria O’Sullivan is an Associate Professor at Deakin Law School whose expertise spans public law, human rights law, and refugee law. Her scholarship has been cited by the High Court of Australia and the Court of Justice of the European Union, and her current research includes the law of protest and its human rights implications Key Takeaways: Engaging in protests can be seen as a sort of communicative act, and the episode explores how Christians might balance respecting authority with participating in protests. Professor Maria O'Sullivan outlines the legal landscape of protest laws in Australia, revealing differences in state legislations and their practical implications on the right to peaceful assembly. The hosts discuss the potential hazards and moral considerations Christians must contemplate when deciding to join or abstain from protests. The 2014 film "Selma" is explored as a cinematic representation of how strategic, nonviolent protest led by Martin Luther King Jr. played a vital role in progressing civil rights. Historical and current contexts are evaluated to understand the role that protests play in democracy and societal change. Notable Quotes: "It's a moment of voice for the voiceless." - Michael Jensen on the significance of protests. "There's a difference between something being performative and something being insincere." - Megan Powell du Toit on the nature of protests. "You have the right to peaceful assembly, but there are exceptions… there has to be some proportionality." - Professor Maria O'Sullivan on the balance between protest and law. "Protest, sort of the embodied nature of protest, I think, is something that's universal." - Megan Powell du Toit on the fundamental importance of protest. "Even if a couple of people in a protest are violent, that does not make the whole protest violent." - Professor Maria O'Sullivan on defining peaceful assembly. This month's episode is a sort of follow-up to that from the start of the year, looking at some of the more problematic areas of dinosaurs and palaeontology when it comes to online discussions. There is an online fandom of dinosaurs that treats them like monsters or superheroes, and can fixate on what is and isn't the biggest / strongest / fastest dinosaur and who could beat up who. Joining us to discuss this is Dr Mike O'Sullivan, a palaeontologist and self-professed member of several fandoms. We talk about how this community works and what it means for scientists talking about research. Today, Dr Sharon Greene tells us how archaeologists explore how people lived in the past, what they believed and so on through the material remains they left behind. This can sometimes confirm or deny what the written records tell us – but most often it adds another layer to our understanding medieval Ireland. We chat about disciplinary challenges, how scholars can work together, Killeen Cormac, ringforts, cattle, sheep, St Brigit, ogham stones, the 'remote' western islands and settlement cemeteries. She attended medical school at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin and completed my family medicine residency at Dublin's James Connolly Memorial Hospital. She moved to the U.S. and completed a second family medicine residency at the University of Maryland. A couple of billionaires adopted me but they're raising me poor... they don't share anything with meMy life has been a roller coaster from birth. You may think that my story is unrealistic but everything I'm about to tell you is true. When I was about five months old, an old man, Mr. O Sullivan, found me on his porch when he was going outside to feed his cat. I was in a cardboard box wrapped in a blanket. I wasn't crying or anything – just looking around. You might be thinking that he called the police immediately and tried to get rid of me as soon as possible – but he didn't do that. He decided that he'd try to take care of me himself and whenever anyone asked, he told them that I was his granddaughter. He named me Julia, after his long lost wife.As I grew up, he told me lots of interesting stories about his hometown in Ireland. I went to bed dreaming about leprechauns, fairies and all the cool mythical creatures I was convinced lived there. I called him grandpa my whole life, until I was about ten years old. He decided to tell me the truth about where I came from.“So you don't know who my parents are?”“No. And they never came searching for you either. I always thought that they'd show up here one day but that never happened. I suppose they had some kind of difficulty and they just couldn't take care of you. But don't worry, I'll always make sure that you're happy and well taken care of.”I was grateful for him, but still sad. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The biggest names in Hollywood and Broadway recorded for AFRS during the war years, The American Forces Network can trace its origins back to May 26, 1942, when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). The U.S. Army began broadcasting from London during World War II, using equipment and studio facilities borrowed from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The first transmission to U.S. troops began at 5:45 p.m. on July 4, 1943, and included less than five hours of recorded shows, a BBC news and sports broadcast. That day, Corporal Syl Binkin became the first U.S. Military broadcasters heard over the air. The signal was sent from London via telephone lines to five regional transmitters to reach U.S. troops in the United Kingdom as they prepared for the inevitable invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Fearing competition for civilian audiences the BBC initially tried to impose restrictions on AFN broadcasts within Britain (transmissions were only allowed from American Bases outside London and were limited to 50 watts of transmission power) and a minimum quota of British produced programming had to be carried. Nevertheless AFN programmes were widely enjoyed by the British civilian listeners who could receive them and once AFN operations transferred to continental Europe (shortly after D-Day) AFN were able to broadcast with little restriction with programmes available to civilian audiences across most of Europe (including Britain) after dark. As D-Day approached, the network joined with the BBC and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to develop programs especially for the Allied Expeditionary Forces. Mobile stations, complete with personnel, broadcasting equipment, and a record library were deployed to broadcast music and news to troops in the field. The mobile stations reported on front line activities and fed the news reports back to studio locations in London. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Entertainment Radio Stations Live 24/7 Sherlock Holmes/CBS Radio Mystery Theater https://live365.com/station/Sherlock-Holmes-Classic-Radio--a91441 https://live365.com/station/CBS-Radio-Mystery-Theater-a57491 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Time Codes: 00:00:26 - Introduction 00:02:26 - Setup of interview 00:04:12 - Interview with Gerry Duggan and David O'Sullivan 01:03:09 - Wrap up 01:03:37 - Contact us Set in the not-too-distant year of 2024, Analog (Image Comics) is a not-too-far-fetched look at what can come of information technology when it has fallen into the wrong hands. Its protagonist, Jack McGinnis, is a leger man, an armed courier working freelance for individuals and businesses who need to transfer information in the old-fashioned analog manner. This is a world where the cloud has come crashing down, and the "security" of the internet has been exposed as nothing more than fiction. Combining elements of sci-fi and noir narrative, Gerry Duggan and David O'Sullivan have created a world that, curiously enough, smacks of the many of the events we see unfolding on the nightly news. Although they may not have fully anticipated the inroads of Mueller's Russian investigation, the ongoing revelations of Facebook and Cambridge Analytica, or the various security breaches we learn about on almost a daily basis, Gerry and David, along with the help of colorist Jordie Bellaire, have established a premise that just may be the logical conclusion to what we're witnessing now. In this interview, Derek talks with his guests about the genesis of this new series, their process of collaboration, the injection of both noir and humor elements, and the various narrative questions established in this first issue.

The first of its five issues comes out this week, and the Two Guys talk with Ryan and Klaus about the genesis of this project, the psychedelic nature of the story, the dynamics of their collaboration, and their philosophies on self-contained and tightly woven narratives. They also talk with the creative duo about their previous work together, Turncoat, and any potential future plans to utilize the webcomics platform.
