This month's episode is a sort of follow-up to that from the start of the year, looking at some of the more problematic areas of dinosaurs and palaeontology when it comes to online discussions. There is an online fandom of dinosaurs that treats them like monsters or superheroes, and can fixate on what is and isn't the biggest / strongest / fastest dinosaur and who could beat up who. Joining us to discuss this is Dr Mike O'Sullivan, a palaeontologist and self-professed member of several fandoms. We talk about how this community works and what it means for scientists talking about research.   Links: Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/terriblelizards   Mike is part of Palaeogames, a company of professional palaeontologists making accurate books and games: https://palaeogames.com/   And here's their latest Kickstarter, a Dungeons & Dragons companion book: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/palaeogames/professor-primulas-portfolio-of-palaeontology

Throughout my time in medicine, she has seen and treated a wealth of illnesses and injuries in many different settings. What she has  enjoyed most of all are the connections she has  built with my patients. She was born and raised in Ireland and moved to the United States in 2004. She attended medical school at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin and completed my family medicine residency at Dublin's James Connolly Memorial Hospital. She moved to the U.S. and completed a second family medicine residency at the University of Maryland. She worked in family practice, urgent care, emergency medicine, and spent four years working at a specialty clinic for the LGBTQ community providing HIV and transgender care. She chose family medicine after rotating through all specialties during her training. Family medicine gives her a daily dose of each of the specialties she loves, and work is never boring! She enjoys giving personalized care and believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to healthcare. She is a strong proponent of shared decision making and want patients to feel heard, seen, and know that she will guide them with the most up-to-date, evidence-based medicine and guidelines. The more time spent with each patient, and the stronger the  relationship, the better she can help them improve their long-term health, happiness and longevity. When shes not caring for patients she loves to travel and take day-trips with her family. She's an avid skier, tennis player, and reader. She devours books and takes great pleasure in experimenting with new recipes, always striving for that Paul Hollywood handshake of approval from her two daughters!

T., Chiki, A., Burtscher, J., Boussouf, M. L. D., Rostami, I., De Simone, A. D. S., Di Monte, D. A., Lashuel, H. A. Abstract: Increasing evidence points to post-translational modifications (PTMs) as key regulators of alpha-synuclein (-Syn) function in health and disease. However, whether these PTMs occur before or after -Syn pathology formation and their role in regulating -Syn toxicity remain unclear. In this study, we demonstrate that post-fibrillization nitration of -Syn fibrils induced their fragmentation, modified their surface and dynamic properties but not their structure, and nearly abolished their seeding activity in primary neurons and in vivo. Furthermore, we show that the dynamic and surface properties of the fibrils, rather than simply their length, are important determinants of -Syn fibril seeding activity. Altogether, our work demonstrates that post-aggregation modifications of -Syn may provide novel approaches to target a central process that contributes to pathology formation and disease progression. Finally, our results suggest that the pattern of PTMs on pathological aggregates, rather than simply their presence, could be a key determinant of their toxicity and neurodegeneration. This calls for reconsidering current approaches relying solely on quantifying and correlating the level of pathology to assess the efficacy of novel therapies, as not all -Syn aggregates in the brain are pathogenic. A couple of billionaires adopted me but they're raising me poor... they don't share anything with meMy life has been a roller coaster from birth. You may think that my story is unrealistic but everything I'm about to tell you is true. When I was about five months old, an old man, Mr. O Sullivan, found me on his porch when he was going outside to feed his cat. I was in a cardboard box wrapped in a blanket. I wasn't crying or anything – just looking around. You might be thinking that he called the police immediately and tried to get rid of me as soon as possible – but he didn't do that. He decided that he'd try to take care of me himself and whenever anyone asked, he told them that I was his granddaughter. He named me Julia, after his long lost wife.As I grew up, he told me lots of interesting stories about his hometown in Ireland. I went to bed dreaming about leprechauns, fairies and all the cool mythical creatures I was convinced lived there. I called him grandpa my whole life, until I was about ten years old. He decided to tell me the truth about where I came from.“So you don't know who my parents are?”“No. And they never came searching for you either. I always thought that they'd show up here one day but that never happened. I suppose they had some kind of difficulty and they just couldn't take care of you. But don't worry, I'll always make sure that you're happy and well taken care of.”I was grateful for him, but still sad. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The biggest names in Hollywood and Broadway recorded for AFRS during the war years, The American Forces Network can trace its origins back to May 26, 1942, when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). The U.S. Army began broadcasting from London during World War II, using equipment and studio facilities borrowed from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The first transmission to U.S. troops began at 5:45 p.m. on July 4, 1943, and included less than five hours of recorded shows, a BBC news and sports broadcast. That day, Corporal Syl Binkin became the first U.S. Military broadcasters heard over the air. The signal was sent from London via telephone lines to five regional transmitters to reach U.S. troops in the United Kingdom as they prepared for the inevitable invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Fearing competition for civilian audiences the BBC initially tried to impose restrictions on AFN broadcasts within Britain (transmissions were only allowed from American Bases outside London and were limited to 50 watts of transmission power) and a minimum quota of British produced programming had to be carried. Nevertheless AFN programmes were widely enjoyed by the British civilian listeners who could receive them and once AFN operations transferred to continental Europe (shortly after D-Day) AFN were able to broadcast with little restriction with programmes available to civilian audiences across most of Europe (including Britain) after dark. As D-Day approached, the network joined with the BBC and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to develop programs especially for the Allied Expeditionary Forces. Mobile stations, complete with personnel, broadcasting equipment, and a record library were deployed to broadcast music and news to troops in the field. The mobile stations reported on front line activities and fed the news reports back to studio locations in London. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Entertainment Radio Stations Live 24/7 Sherlock Holmes/CBS Radio Mystery Theater https://live365.com/station/Sherlock-Holmes-Classic-Radio--a91441 https://live365.com/station/CBS-Radio-Mystery-Theater-a57491 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Its protagonist, Jack McGinnis, is a leger man, an armed courier working freelance for individuals and businesses who need to transfer information in the old-fashioned analog manner. This is a world where the cloud has come crashing down, and the "security" of the internet has been exposed as nothing more than fiction. Combining elements of sci-fi and noir narrative, Gerry Duggan and David O'Sullivan have created a world that, curiously enough, smacks of the many of the events we see unfolding on the nightly news. Although they may not have fully anticipated the inroads of Mueller's Russian investigation, the ongoing revelations of Facebook and Cambridge Analytica, or the various security breaches we learn about on almost a daily basis, Gerry and David, along with the help of colorist Jordie Bellaire, have established a premise that just may be the logical conclusion to what we're witnessing now. In this interview, Derek talks with his guests about the genesis of this new series, their process of collaboration, the injection of both noir and humor elements, and the various narrative questions established in this first issue.
