There are two words in Greek that are translated as either “longsuffering,” “endurance,” “perseverance” or “patience” in the Bible: makrothumia and hupomone. Makrothumia is patience in respect to persons, while hupomone, endurance, is putting up with things or circumstances. Longsuffering is a characteristic of the character of Jesus and a quality of the Fruit of Spirit that we can demonstrate in our lives as we surrender to the Spirit. We can learn how to suffer long with difficult people and difficult circumstances. In doing so, we can grow in our spiritual maturity.

We have all laughed at some point either at ourselves or at others for praying for patience. Why in the world would we do that? Praying for Patience is like asking God to bring fire down upon you; can I get an amen? However, patience is without a doubt very important to God as he names is a Fruit of the Holy Spirit. So then, how do we perfect this part of our faith? How do we grow and nurture this fruit? 1. Pray that God would change you. Ask my Spirit within you to order your day and control your thoughts, for the mind controlled by the Spirit is Life and Peace. (Jesus Calling) 2. Practice Pause. Practice Pause: Pause before judging. Pause before assuming. Pause before accusing. Pause whenever you're about to act harshly and you'll avoid doing and saying things you'll later regret. Lori Deschene 3. Prepare your mind. Makrothumia, which is used in Galatians 5:22, is a compound formed by makros ("long") and thumos ("passion" or "temper"). "Patience" in Galatians 5:22 literally means "long temper," in the sense of "the ability to hold one's temper for a long time." The KJV translates it "longsuffering."
