The moment we stop treating Colossians 3 like a checklist and start wearing it like a robe, everything changes. We open with the text—compassion, kindness, humility, patience, forgiveness, love—and name the tension: these can feel like smoke in the eyes or like warmth by the fire. From there we walk the path Paul lays out, moving from “put to death” to “put on,” from battle to belonging, and we talk candidly about what happens when grievance sets up camp in the heart. We share why “Do I forgive?” is the wrong question and how “How do I forgive?” becomes a doorway to freedom. Drawing on Jesus' parable of canceled debts, we confront our quiet desire to be “small sinners” and discover the joy of being greatly forgiven. We also get practical about pace and posture: letting the peace of Christ rule looks like moving slower, talking less, and resisting the urge to fix everyone else. The only thing we're called to control is ourselves, and that self-control reframes when to correct and when to wait, choosing the good of others over the itch to be right.Harmony doesn't come from sameness; it grows where love binds differences. We explore how a community can teach, admonish, and still sing together without fracturing—because gratitude keeps the heart soft and the word of Christ keeps it steady. Along the way we touch on worship nostalgia, why restraint is a form of wisdom, and how a simple pause at the door—asking God to let peace rule—can transform a home, a team, or a church. If you're tired of carrying old wars into new rooms, this study invites you to lay them down and live clothed in Christ's righteousness. In a culture saturated with self-help strategies, identity politics, and the language of "manifesting," where do Christians turn for a stable, coherent sense of self? On this episode of Christ the Center, Camden Bucey sits down with pastor and author Justin N. Poythress to explore the deep theological roots of the identity crisis plaguing our age. Drawing from his new book, Who Am I? And What Am I Doing With My Life? Finding Stability and Purpose in Jesus (The Good Book Company), Poythress argues that only Christ can rightly function as our "master identity"—the organizing center beneath every role, relationship, and calling. Work, sexuality, politics, and even parenting all fail catastrophically when elevated to that ultimate position, because none of them can bear the weight of the human soul. At the heart of the conversation lies a powerful biblical framework: we are in Christ while also being conformed to his image. Romans 8:29 declares that God predestined His people to be conformed to the image of His Son—a settled identity and a lifelong trajectory of growth. Poythress unpacks how 2 Corinthians 3:18 reframes the secular obsession with "manifesting" into the biblical practice of beholding Christ, the true mechanism of transformation. The episode also explores the church as a "thick community" designed for the kind of multi-dimensional, embodied relationships that curated online personas can never provide. For pastors, elders, and anyone seeking maturity in Christ, the takeaway is both liberating and compelling: the Christian life is a matter of becoming what you already are in Christ. Mike Gowens' sermon on 2/15/26 is based on Philippians 2:14-16 and emphasizes the importance of non-conformity in living the Christian life. Discipleship involves witnessing the light of Jesus Christ in a dark world. Although verbally witnessing the truth of the gospel is important, the emphasis in this passage concerns the non-verbal witness of a transformed life. Like torchbearers in a relay before an athletic contest in ancient Greece, Christians are called to carry the light of Christ into the darkness of this world. This is message #15 in the Philippians study.

Chaplain, coach, and author Dean Abbott joins me for a thought-provoking conversation about the difference between healthy introspection and unhealthy rumination. Dean challenges a popular argument that therapy simply encourages people to think about themselves too much, making the case instead that people don't ruminate for fun — they ruminate because they're in pain and searching for something they've lost.Together we explore what makes self-examination productive versus destructive, and Dean introduces a framework rooted in the Christian tradition that contrasts nihilistic rumination — where a person endlessly rehearses their pain with no resolution — with a more structured self-examination oriented toward growth, virtue, and wisdom. I get personal and share my own recent struggles with loneliness and the tension between being a generous host and not getting that energy back when I need it most. Dean walks me through what healthy self-examination would look like in that situation, pointing to the importance of recognizing our legitimate needs and having the courage and honesty to express them.We also dive into the lost concept of human formation, the role of moral education in therapy, why thousands of years of wisdom literature shouldn't be abandoned in the counseling room, and the difference between development and formation. This is a rich, honest, and deeply human conversation.Dean Abbott is a coach, chaplain and author living in the Midwest. He loves animals, music and baseball. His can be found at www.deanabbott.com. Bible StudyDon't just take our word for it . . . take His! We would encourage you to spend time examining the following Scriptures that shaped this sermon:Sermon NotesBig IdeaThe Tabernacle shows us that God desires to dwell with His people — and that desire is ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ.1. Participation — A Glad InvitationBefore giving building instructions, God invited the people to contribute materials (Exodus 25:2).They gave what God had already provided (Exodus 12).Giving was voluntary — “from every man whose heart moves him.”Covenant generosity flows from joy, not compulsion. As Paul the Apostle writes in Second Corinthians 9:7, “God loves a cheerful giver.”ApplicationEverything we have is from God.Generosity is not the duty of a slave, but the privilege of a lover. If joy is missing, examine the heart — not just the habit.2. Pattern — Nearness and HolinessThe structure of the Tabernacle (courtyard → holy place → Most Holy Place) reveals two truths:God Is NearHis presence dwelt among His people. The Ark symbolized His throne on earth.Covenant means relationship — not distance.God Is HolyAccess was limited and required sacrifice. His purity creates a tension for sinful people.Nearness is a gift — not something to approach casually.ApplicationCome to God joyfully.Come to God reverently.Grace produces both confidence and humility.3. Fulfillment — The Person and Work of JesusThe Tabernacle pointed forward to Christ. In Gospel of John 1:14 we read:“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”Literally — He “tabernacled” among us.Jesus is:The true meeting place of heaven and earth. The fulfillment of the Temple. The presence of God in fullness. After His resurrection and ascension, His presence comes to us through the Holy Spirit — not as a replacement for Jesus, but as the living connection to Him.Discussion Questions1. Is generosity a joyful practice for you? Why or why not?2. How do different worship styles emphasize either God's nearness or holiness? How can worship emphasize both?3. Is the Holy Spirit a substitute for Jesus? Why or why not?4. Read Ephesians 2:19-22. How is Paul using the Temple metaphor? What might that look like today in the Christian Life? Hint: the "you" in v. 22 is plural.Questions?Do you have a question about today's sermon? Email Randy Forrester ().

It was about obedience. It was about trust. It was about offering what was available and watching Jesus do what only He can do.Jesus told Nathanael, “You will see greater things than these.” That promise still stands. Prayer is the primary way we step out in faith, place our “jars” before Him, and believe Him for greater things. If you're waiting on a breakthrough, longing to see God move, or wondering if your small act of faith matters—this message is for you.Part of our series: The Gospel of John#GospelOfJohn #Faith #Prayer #Miracles #SermonThis week's message is from our Lead Pastor, John Letterman.Let's Connect: http://bit.ly/3XbRE9TFree Access To RightNow Media:https://app.rightnowmedia.org/join/rccreadingSocial Media:@riverviewchristian on Facebook and InstagramWebsite:riverviewchristian.churchSupport the show

In chapter 6 of Sinclair Ferguson's "Devoted to God," we explore sanctification not as a burden of self-effort, but as learning a new rhythm. This is living in the rhythm of heaven itself. Like Russian dolls fitting perfectly together, the Christian life reveals layers that all point to the same truth: God's grace comes first, and our obedience flows from what He has already done.Through Colossians 3:1-17, Ferguson shows us that grace doesn't just rescue us from sin's penalty; it retrains our hearts. We're not merely forgiven. We need to see that we're being recreated from the inside out. This is the Spirit teaching us to dance to a new beat, transforming us through our union with Christ. The new rhythm involves both putting off and putting on. We shed the old wardrobe of anger, lust, greed, and pride. We are not doing this for moral improvement, but because those clothes no longer fit. We are new creatures in Christ. Instead, we clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, meekness, patience, forgiveness, and love. These aren't abstract virtues; they are reflections of Jesus himself.Sanctification begins with a change of identity before it ever becomes a change of behavior. This rhythm isn't frantic or forced, but it's peaceful. The music of the gospel is not a mundane march, but more like a heartbeat.

How often do we think about disgust? Yet it shapes our choices, relationships, and even our faith every day in ways we rarely notice.  In this episode of the Allender Center Podcast, Dr. Paul Hoard and Billie Hoard discuss their new book, "Eucontamination: Disgust Theology and the Christian Life," exploring how this powerful, often overlooked force influences us. Drawing from theology and psychology, they examine how disgust—originally designed to protect us—can become a tool for exclusion when applied to people rather than pathogens. From purity culture to nationalism to everyday relational divides, they consider how "contamination logic" forms the world around us. But the heart of their work is hopeful: Jesus doesn't abolish disgust—he inverts it. In Christ, holiness is not fragile. Love is stronger than sin. What looks contaminating does not defile him; instead, his presence transforms from within. This conversation invites us to reflect on where disgust may be shaping our reactions, relationships, and theology—and to imagine a discipleship formed by more courageous, more transformative love. About the Allender Center Podcast: For over a decade, the Allender Center Podcast has offered honest, thoughtful conversations about the deep work of healing and transformation. Hosted by Dr. Dan Allender and Rachael Clinton Chen, MDiv, this weekly podcast explores the complexities of trauma, abuse recovery, story, relationships, and spiritual formation. Through questions submitted by listeners, stories, interviews, and conversations, we engage the deep places of heartache and hope that are rarely addressed so candidly in our culture today. Join the Allender Center Podcast to uncover meaningful perspectives and support for your path to healing and growth. St. John of Avila (1499 - 1569) At the dawn of the Protestant Reformation, St. John of Avila stood in a long and noble tradition of preachers for reform within the Catholic Church. His down-to-earth, but pull-no-punches preaching style brought people back to the sacraments, and he often found that after he preached, he spent the rest of the day hearing confessions.  Links A selection of 8 sermons by St. John of Avila: My Burden is Light: Suffering and Consolation in the Christian Life, translated by Brandon Otto https://tanbooks.com/products/books/my-burden-is-light-suffering-and-consolation-in-the-christian-life/ The volume on St. John of Avila in the Classics of Western Spirituality series: https://www.paulistpress.com/Products/4200-7/john-of-avila.aspx SIGN UP for Catholic Culture's Newsletter:  https://www.catholicculture.org/newsletters/ DONATE at:  http://www.catholicculture.org/donate/audio Dr. Papandrea's Homepage:  https://jimpapandrea.wordpress.com/ Dr. Papandrea's latest book is The Original Church: What it Meant - and Still Means - to Be a Christian: https://scepterpublishers.org/products/the-original-church-what-it-meant-and-still-means-to-be-a-christian Dr. Papandrea's YouTube channel, The Original Church: https://www.youtube.com/@TheOriginalChurch Theme Music: Gaudeamus (Introit for the Feast of All Saints), sung by Jeff Ostrowski. Start with the heart, not the blueprint. That single idea reframes the way we think about ministry, leadership, and everyday service. We draw a clear line from Exodus 25–40 to our modern rhythms and show why God insists on consecration before construction and holiness before hustle. If you've ever felt pressure to produce results fast, this conversation offers a liberating pattern: finish what God spoke, honor the details, and let His presence do what your effort cannot. We walk through the tabernacle narrative as more than ancient architecture. It becomes a living template for alignment, where willing offerings precede precise instructions and community covenant holds the work together. The theme is consistent: God's kingdom is not chaotic; it is beautifully ordered, and that order protects intimacy rather than stifles it. Along the way, we take a sober look at shortcuts and substitutions—why they promise glory but leave us empty—and we celebrate the quiet victories of those who serve without applause. You'll hear how unity is both miracle and mandate, shaped by truth rather than trend. Reports from global ministry moments, including a surge of hunger and alignment in Brazil, remind us that when people rally around purpose, doors open and momentum builds. We also speak directly to volunteers and leaders carrying “small” assignments: ushers, translators, sound teams, intercessors, teachers. The tabernacle needed every piece, and so does the church. Your portion matters, and when it's joined in covenant, it becomes a place where God's presence rests. If you're ready to trade hurry for holiness and hype for alignment, this episode will steady your hands. Listen, share with a friend who needs encouragement, and leave a review to help others find the conversation. Br Gowens continues his exposition of Philippians with this 2/8/26 message from Philippians 2:12-13. This important text explains a dynamic of fundamental importance, namely that the life of Christian discipleship necessarily originates from the life that God works within the heart. The inward man, in other words, is the wellspring from which everything else in the Christian life must flow.
