May is Mental Health Month. So, our guest today, Michelle Dickinson-Moravek will join us to discuss this important topic and more. When Michelle started writing her book Breaking Into My Life, she assumed that Part 3 would be about coming to terms with growing up as the daughter of a bipolar mother. After years of playing the role of child caregiver, writing her memoir launched Michelle on a journey of self-discovery that would prove surprisingly healing. Coming to terms, she realized, was no longer enough. She had to break into her own life, a quest that literally played out as she was writing the final pages. Michelle has worked in the pharmaceutical industry for over 18 years. She is currently an associate director at Johnson & Johnson and is proud to be amongst the leadership team of the company’s Mental Health Diplomat employee resource group. She also designed and implemented “Perfect, Just the Way You Are,” a powerful wellness after-school enrichment program for under-served communities that focuses on taking care of the body though diet and exercise while bolstering self-confidence and self-love. Michelle’s mission is to raise awareness and compassion for those struggling with mental illness along with those who care for them. Did you know that Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. (46.6 million) experiences mental illness in a given year? This is an obvious staggering number!!! Michelle Dickinson Moravek joins the Functionised Podcast to discuss her life experiences growing up with her mother, who was diagnosed as bipolar. These experiences became a heartfelt, open and honest memoir, which became Breaking into My Life. Michelle and the mad scientist Jim Goetz podcast on mental health and how society views it often as a stigma. Michelle looks to remove the negative connotation and those suffering in silence may be able to find the courage and receive the support they need for a healthy and productive life. Michelle's goal is a day where we as a whole can discuss mental illness in the same manner we discuss other diseases such as heart disease or diabetes. Conversations with a dark veil around it cannot possibly survive. It is through open and honest communication we can find acceptance and navigate mental illness to the fullest.  Functionised Show Notes   Functionised Instagram: @functionised Functionised Facebook: @functionised
