We look forward to spending the next seven episodes with her and the Doctor. Ben reflects upon what movies "The Robot Revolution" reminded him of, and David wonders if there wasn't a little bit of a Douglas Adams inspiration to the story. Plus, who was more cringy, AL or the Doctor? Opening music is from "Belinda" by the Eurythmics in 1981. Closing music is "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1" by the Flaming Lips in 2002. The People's Countryside Environmental Debate Podcast

Before we get into the meat and bones of this episode, an announcement. This podcast will be ending in 2030 and by our calculations, if we carry on the same rate of listens for the next five years, we'll reach 800,000 in total. So dear listener, here is where you come in. Share this podcast with 5 of your friends today and help us reach the 1 million listen mark before we bring this podcast to a close. Simples! Now on with the show, and in today's episode Stuart and William discuss two of those listener questions, beginning with this corker from Jess in Bishop's Tatchbrook, Warwickshire, England - “Random question for you today. Whats the most memorable live musical performance you've seen?”For Stuart, the most memorable performance was Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock in 1969. He goes on to elaborate about the timing of the performance and what he gained from the experience, particularly highlighting Hendrix's improvisational skills. When William interpreted this question, he saw it as being about performances actually witnessed in person, and since he has seen many memorable performances, he finds it difficult to select just one. However after a little internal deliberation he settles on two particular performances. One recent, and one from around 20 years ago. The first was a performance of Beethoven's 5th piano concerto at Oxford's Sheldonian Theatre, where he was amazed by a virtuoso pianist playing entirely from memory. His second pick was seeing The White Stripes at the Shepherd's Bush Empire, where he was impressed by Jack White's stage presence and the duo's chemistry. He also concludes with an action: to see The Flaming Lips live, you won't regret it!After all that musical waffle, Stuart and William then go onto talk through the following question from Brenda in Northumberland, England - “I notice you don't have too many promotional platforms, or try to do too many things. Is this because of time constraints or do you feel doing too many things and having too many offerings for your audience could be a distraction and divide your audience?”Stuart initiates the discussion by explaining that time constraints limit their promotional efforts. He notes that expanding to new platforms can divide audience attention and potentially serve as an excuse for failure.William goes on to describe their recording process, which ensures the podcast is consistently released on time. He emphasises that word of mouth remains their most effective form of promotion.Stuart expands the conversation by expressing his frustration with creatives who constantly launch new channels or ideas rather than committing to one project and seeing it through.Stuart points out for this podcast their listener numbers remain stable even without active promotion, which he sees as a testament to the podcast's success. He prefers maintaining a consistent audience rather than pursuing a boom-and-bust approach that chases listener numbers.William concludes by questioning whether creatives truly understand the implications of having a large audience, suggesting many pursue big numbers without considering the consequences. What do you make of this discussion? Maggie speaks with Willie Nelson's youngest son Micah Nelson also known as "Particle Kid" about his latest collaboration with his Father. Willie's 76th studio album and 153rd album overall as he celebrates his 91st year.  Willie Nelson is now in his 7th decade as a songwriter, performer and recording artist, but one of his most underrated talents is song interpretation. Over his career he has tackled songs from across the world of music, making each his own. Willie turns his gaze to a collection of songs by rock legends, idiosyncratic singer songwriters, alt-rock heroes, and indie folk artists. The result is a gorgeously cohesive rumination on loss, love, and world-weary hope, perfectly complemented by spare and spooky musical production. Lovingly curated and produced by his son Micah Nelson, Last Leaf On The Tree finds Willie covering songs from moody indie rock (Beck), psych alt-pop (The Flaming Lips) and punk-informed folk (Sunny War, Micah's Particle Kid) to thought-provoking soul jazz (Nina Simone) and lesser-known gems from legends like Tom Waits, Neil Young, Keith Richards, and Warren Zevon. In addition, the album features new takes on one of Willie's oldest songs (“The Ghost” from 1962) plus a new one penned with Micah (“The Color Of Sound”) that joins Willie's collection of Zen-soaked classics. In addition to producing, Micah Nelson plays many of the instruments and even designed the album cover. He is joined by a host of celebrated musicians plus guest spots from legendary producer and musician Daniel Lanois, John Densmore of The Doors and harmonica master Mickey Raphael, who has played alongside Willie for over 50 years.Source: https://legacyrecordings.medium.com/willie-nelson-the-last-leaf-on-the-tree-d94188f65739Source: https://www.sonymusic.com/legacy/legacy-recordings-releases-willie-nelson-last-leaf-on-the-tree-track/Source: https://willienelson.com/Host Maggie LePique, a radio veteran since the 1980's at NPR in Kansas City Mo. Antoine Arvizu is the studio owner and manager, recording and producing most of the artists that come to us for that “Compound Sound”. Some artists and producers of note include:  Chicano Batman, Ryan Bingham (Grammy and Oscar winner for Crazy Heart), Marc Ford (The Black Crowes, Ben Harper, Booker T. Jones), Ikey Owens (Free Moral Agents, Jack White, The Mars Volta), Jay Buchanan (Rival Sons)… Arvizu began his music career as a drummer in the late 70s/early 80s as punk rock morphed into an alternative art rock. A founding member of Dr. Dream Records recording artists National Peoples Gang, he toured internationally before disbanding in the mid-90s; sharing the stage with such iconic bands as The Flaming Lips, Nirvana, Soundgarden, fIREHOSE and many more during those early days of "indie rock". A recording career began in 1991 at the now defunct The Toledo studio in Long Beach engineering for Sublime, Rocket From The Crypt, Big Drill Car and many more. Later in the nineties he was a founding member of the Delta Blues group Bourbon Jones, earning the moniker Two Drum Tony, famous for simply playing the 26″ Radio King bass drum and cowhide snare, digging deep into the second line style of New Orleans blues and swing. It was in 1998 that Antoine had the opportunity to engineer at Capitol Studios in Hollywood. The list of fine artists that come through those studios is staggering, to name a few: Paul McCartney, The JB's, Richard Carpenter, Elliot Smith, Faith Hill… and the list of world class engineers and producers is outrageous; education through osmosis. In 2003, happy to finally have a studio to truly call home, Antoine joined The Compound Studio to help create “An Organic Recording Experience". When you think of Oklahoma band The Flaming Lips, you probably don't think of singles. They're mostly known as an album rock band—and they already had three full-lengths out by the time they released their first 7-inch, part of the nascent Sub Pop Singles Club. 1989's "Drug Machine" b/w "Strychnine/(What's So Funny Bout) Piece Love and Understanding?" shows their early noise-rock prowess, and predilection for weird cover versions—and points to the Lips' strange future as part of the rock mainstream. On this all-new episode of The Spindle, Marc and John dig into it all. Call us anytime at 1-877-WASTOIDS. More podcasts and videos at WASTOIDS.com | Follow us on Instagram and YouTube.

This week, we're scratching The Itch to visit the Blue Planet! Three decades of fandom come to a head as Aaron sees Weezer perform The Blue Album for the first time with support from the ever-entertaining Flaming Lips. And he followed that up by seeing a new act with a throwback 90s hip hop sound in the ever-confident Joey Valence & Brae! Meanwhile, KC had a mixed bag of a time seeing In This Moment, Ice Nine Kills, and Avatar. Let's just say the whole experience was a little foggy. Enjoy. According to some folks at this past Friday night at China Blossom Restaurant in N. Andover MA, where the comedy room Wicket Funny is, Jacques doesn't totally stink at stand up … nor does their pal Wayne Russell, who both moved to finals of 2ndannual Funniest Person In Merrimac Valley contest. Jacques learns what a “mom said no” item in a store is, we chat Vegas odds of Oasis tour actually happening, The Jane's Addiction dust up on stage in Boston this weekend … and someone running for public office who hates the non-child having cat lady, Taylor Swift (who we … think is a national treasure and a great person.)  Joe gives a big thumbs up to “Legends Of Beavis”, Biff gives interesting breakdown of “Ghost Stories” from Japan and Jacques' kid has him watching JuJutsu Kaisen. Jacques and son went to pretty amazing Weezer 30th anniversary of Blue Album show (Dinosaur Jr was great, Flaming Lips sucked). Erling Haaland, footballer for Man City is a human cheat code (that's if he is human) and piss off to Complains and Observation's Dave for putting Jacques on anxiety ride watching West Ham games! TV and Radio presenter, and former record company executive, Nicki Chapman goes head to head in a war of the words with producer, musician and label owner, Simon Raymonde. On this episode of Book Off we delve into two music memoirs, covering two very sides of the music industry and history, but that both have a lot in common. Simon was one third of the band Cocteau Twins between 1983 and 1997, and owns and runs the Bella Union label. As well as having his own successful music career as a musician and a producer, he has signed and worked with artists such as Fleet Foxes, Dirty Three, Midlake, Mercury Rev, John Grant, BC Camplight, Laura Viers and Flaming Lips. In this very honest and open conversation, he talks about the tumour on his brain which has effected his hearing, the influence of his father (Ivor Raymonde) on his career without knowing it, the break up of Cocteau Twins and how his label is still going strong more than 25 years later. Nicki worked at MCA and RCA records in the 90s in the promotions department, before going out on her own. Over her career, she has worked with many artists including Phil Collins, David Bowie, Kylie, M People, Annie Lennonx, Prince, Take That, Amy Winehouse, Billie Piper, Spice Girls and Liza Minelli. Nicki's book is swimming in 90s nostalgia (music, fashion, tabloids). She too shares her own personal account of having a brain tumour, which inspired her to want to write the book, as well as lots of stories from her time in the music industry. They also give us some brilliant book recommendations! The Book Off 'Sculpting In Time' by Andrei Tarkovsky VS 'Shardlake' by C.J. SamsonWe hope you enjoy this episode - and the latest series! We've got a bit of a strange one for you on this week's Talkhouse Podcast. Back during the darkest days of the pandemic, we hosted an Instagram live chat between Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips and actor/musician Joe Keery, who at the time was best known as part of the cast of Stranger Things. Keery is also a musician, having released music with his band Post Animal, and he was just starting to release music under the name Djo. Keery had a pretty big viral hit with a Djo song this year: You may have heard “End Of Beginning.” If you haven't, check it out right here. Anyway, we figured that a lot of folks may have missed that conversation, so now would be the perfect time to resurface it in slightly edited podcast form. These two had never met, but they jump into a great chat about songwriting, Miley Cyrus's house—which is where Coyne was dialing in from—and lots more, including how Coyne and his Flaming Lips bandmate Steven Drozd are like french fries and salt, about how listening is equally vital in music and acting, and much more. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 1:40 – "This is Wayne Flaming Lip" getting himself connected 6:25 – Joe's thoughts on the Flaming Lips' live show, which Wayne thinks isn't really about the band 10:57 – Wayne asks Joe how making music is different than being directed 22:52 – "You have to listen to your own music!" 29:41 – Making music and creating art shouldn't be a sacrifice Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Wayne Coyne and Joe Keery for time traveling from 2020 for this episode. It was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time! This episode is brought to you by DistroKid. The Flaming Lips - Do You Realize??

Song Exploder

The Flaming Lips formed in Oklahoma City in 1983. Over the last four decades, they've put out 16 albums. In 1999, they put out their album The Soft Bulletin, and that brought them a new level of success. And then, in 2002, they followed it up with Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, which was their biggest album to date. Pitchfork named it one of the top 5 albums of the year, Stereogum called it one of the best albums of the decade, and they won a Grammy. And the biggest song from the album was "Do You Realize??" So, for this episode, I talked to Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd about how that song was first imagined. You'll hear the very first demo Wayne recorded for the song, and the demo he and Steven put together later, on their way to making the final version with producer Dave Fridmann. For more, visit songexploder.net/the-flaming-lips.

In this episode, Maria Paz Gutiérrez does battle against the one absolute truth of human existence and all life… death. After getting a team of scientists to stand in for death (the grim reaper wasn't available), we parry and thrust our way through the myriad ways that death comes for us - from falling pianos to evolution's disinterest in longevity. In the process, we see if we can find a satisfying answer to the question “why do we have to die” and find ourselves face to face with the bitter end of everything that ever existed.Special thanks to Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips, Steven Nadler, Beth Jarosz, Anjana Badrinarayanan, Shaon Chakrabarti, Bob Horvitz, John K.
