There's a new challenge facing employers – and this one is more insidious.  As a result of the whirlwind events of the past few years, employers are now facing a tsunami of employees struggling with mental health. As a leader within your practice, getting out in front of this brain health pandemic is crucial for your business.  In this episode, Jesse catches up with Michelle E. Burnout, anxiety and depression will have a major impact on your business. This is the second season Of Course, They Make Me Crazy! April is so excited to have wellbeing strategist and passionate mental health advocate Michelle E. Dickinson. Michelle is a TEDx Speaker and a published author. She is also doing great work by partnering with different company leaders to bring them a psychological resilience program that she created. But April first wants to talk about why other people’s well-being is so important to Michelle. It comes from Michelle being a caregiver to her bipolar mother. That is also what her memoir entitled “Breaking Into My Life” is about. April asks, “please tell us about your early life with your mom.” Michelle starts by saying, “Life was this strain. And maybe her past trauma caused my mom to start exhibiting signs of bipolar disorder. I guess at the age of four and on, I remember her starting to be manic. She would sit on the couch crying for hours. It was a bit of a roller coaster for me. As you might know as a child, the one thing we need is consistency and predictability and routine. And my mom was anything but consistent. I never knew the mother I would come home to. Some days she would be in a good mood. Some days she would be angry with me, and I didn't know why. But that shaped me because it taught me compassion. It also taught me firsthand what it's like to love someone and how punishing it can be to love someone with a mental illness. How we put our own needs on the back burner so that we can do whatever we can to keep peace in the home. And that was my life. That was my childhood, my young adult life, and even my adult life just trying to do what I can to help her.” Michelle continued to explain after telling her story on the TEDx Stage she realized that something beautiful happens when telling your story. That is what led her to write her memoir. April asks, “How was living at home with her?” Michelle responded by saying, “It was our job to keep peace in the home, walk on eggshells, not to get her upset, not create a nervous breakdown, to do whatever we needed to try to keep peace in the home. So, my needs would go by the wayside. And then I hit those rebellious teen years and that was a whole other can of worms.” Michelle said her mom was emotionally and physically abusive to her. She harbored a lot of anger and resentment until she started working on herself. She went through clinical therapy and a lot of self-discovery work through Tony Robbins and Landmark. Michelle says, “I was able to reach a place of forgiveness and compassion. To try to step into what life would have been like for her to try to raise a daughter and navigate a mental illness. In the back of my book, there's an epilogue about how ultimately all of this now serves me in the work I do. But I couldn't see it for the longest time because I was so focused on the effects that her mental illness and her behavior was having on me. When you focus on the effects of that, there's no space for compassion or to try to understand what life is like for her.” April added to what Michelle just explained. April said, “Later in life I realized that my mom who was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder did the best that she was able to do at that time. She was doing the best that she was able to do at that moment. What they do has nothing to do with us even though it feels like it.” April shared a story about how she drove 14 hours from Memphis, Tennessee to Cleveland, Ohio after working all week because her mom called her crying about how lonely she was. Michelle Dickinson is Dr. Brad Miller's guest on Episode 171 of “Beyond Adversity Podcast.” Michelle is a passionate mental health advocate, a TED speaker, and a published author of a memoir entitled Breaking Into My Life. After years of playing the role of child caregiver, Michelle embarked on her own healing journey of self-discovery. Her memoir offers a rare glimpse into a young girl's experience living with—and loving—her bipolar mother. In this episode, Michelle shared her journey of overcoming depression, self-discovery, and her experience growing up with a bipolar mother. When she started sharing her story of growing up with her mother, she became very connected to the power of storytelling. Before giving a Ted talk, Michelle had to go through years of counseling and therapy because her mother treated her when she was young. By finding compassion towards her mother, she then wrote her book and understood why her mother was the way she is. Therapy was instrumental to Michelle's journey of healing. Finding healthy vices to lean on was how she coped. Michelle then shares a book that was also instrumental in her healing journey. Loving What Is by Byron Katie made her realize that we create our upset if we disagree with our reality. “You create your upset by disagreeing with it. There's no amount of disagreement that's going to change the reality.” Michelle was very fortunate to have friends that supported her and held her accountable. Surrounding herself with people who truly cared reminded her that even though she lost so much, she still had so much. Michelle says that when dealing with depression, it's very easy to isolate ourselves. That's the point where we should reach out. Surrounding yourself with people you trust and love, especially in those moments, is critical because they will hold you accountable to who they know you used to be, versus all the negative banter that we create in our heads. Michelle constantly reminds people of where they have control and what they have to be grateful for. The Gratitude Practice is something that everyone should do daily. We should assess ourselves whether we are getting enough of what we deserve. Michelle Dickinson's resilience is truly an inspiring story. With her mission of elevating compassion, causing more open conversations, and eradicating mental health stigma, she has emerged with a strong desire to positively impact the mental health landscape. In this episode, I am having a vulnerable discussion about mental health and bipolar disorder with Michelle Dickinson who survived a mother who had it. Dickinson about mental health, growing up with a mother who was bipolar, understanding the challenges of mental health issues in the workplace and the need to normalize the conversation around mental health. More from Michelle: 1 in 3 Americans are dealing with depression or anxiety due to COVID. The emotional impact of the pandemic is hitting many of us. The United Nations released a policy brief entitled COVID-19 and the Need for Action on Mental Health citing the deep toll the crisis has taken due to social isolation, losing a loved one, and the economic turmoil from lost income. Now, more than ever, we need to normalize the mental health conversation.  Return to work anxiety is very real for so many people also. Setting up your home for harmony is also a challenge for many. Invite me to share tips and strategies to help ease anxiety and how to create a home environment and structure that will best support your family. I've experienced the "trifecta" of mental health. I grew up loving and caring for my bipolar mother. I helped build the largest mental health employee resource group at a fortune 500 company. I experienced depression due to a life event reminding me that nobody is immune to mental illness at any given point in their life. My book Breaking Into My Life was written to help myself—along with the rest of us—better understand the world of mental illness. My story of perseverance and triumph helps challenge and transform the “suffer in silence” dynamic, and makes mental illness more understood, treated and accepted. I am out to do my part to eliminate the stigma by normalizing the mental health conversation in workplaces and within the first responder community. I partner with innovative leaders to bring my programs and mental health strategies to help them cultivate cultures of compassion for those living with or caring for those with invisible disabilities. She works with organizations to shift their culture, to create compassionate workplaces for individuals and for teams. Michelle, Goddess, welcome to the podcast. Michelle: Thank you so much for having me. I must say it's a pleasure to be here with you. I love your energy and what you're up to. Victoria: Thank you! Oh, the feeling is mutual. So this may be the very first time someone is getting to hear about you and what you do in the world or see you and learn more. So I was wondering if you could share with us in your own words exactly what it is you do, and especially what are the three things that you're known for. Could you tell us? Michelle: Yeah, for sure. I think if you were to ask those around me what I'm known for, they would probably say I'm an author of the book that you mentioned, which is rooted in my TED talk. I gave a TED talk about growing up with my mom who had bipolar disorder. So that's the second thing. And the third would be that I am a new entrepreneur. I'm fairly new in the space and after leaving the corporate world behind. So it's a very exciting time. So they would say she's a new entrepreneur and wants to change the world. So, yeah, I'm sure you'll hear I feel quite pleased to change the world. Victoria: We need all that now more than ever. And so that makes me curious, though. So take me into it. Like, what inspired you to become an entrepreneur and to really commit to this purpose, sharing your gifts in your in a business of your own? Like what? Is there a story there? Michelle: For sure. I mean, you know, I I'm so grateful. I'm so grateful that I am so clear as to why I'm on this planet. And I can't say that I knew that even five years ago. I'm deeply connected to the work I do. So I grew up with a mother who had bipolar disorder. I cared for her for a very large period of my my life, even up until I was an adult. So I saw what it looks like to suffer. Right. And I felt what her suffering felt like. And then so that was my first perspective about mental health. Right. I dealt with seasonal depression periodically as an adult. But then last I think it was two years ago, I was diagnosed with depression myself for the first time. And so I know what that feels like. And then I also was in a workplace where we were trying to create compassion at work. But yet I had a boss who was not compassionate. And as soon as I felt that, I stopped and said, "I can get angry or I can say to myself, I need to be the change that I want to see in the world and I need to be the one creating more compassion and understanding." So those those are the three lenses that I have on mental health. And when I felt that lack of compassion was the fire, at that point, the fire was lit in my belly to be the change. And so, I mean, that was really it. If you would ask me a few years ago, what are you going to do? What are you going to be when you grow up? I would have said I'm going to retire into the sunset of my corporate job, and that's it. But there was a bigger plan for me - in just giving my TED talk, writing my memoir and getting really connected to this work. And honestly, it's the power of storytelling. When I tell my story, it opens the door. It creates an access for other people to not feel so alone and isolated. So if I could go first and tell my story, and it opens up something for someone else that brings me all the joy and fulfillment that I could ever ask for. Victoria: You know, storytelling is one of the oldest forms of human gathering technologies, like being able to gather people and organize. It's been around: oratory, right? And so that connection and sharing how, through sharing the experience of what you've been through, it's almost as if vicariously a person receives that same learning by encountering the story with you. With the workplace experiencing many changes during the coronavirus pandemic, what are some things leaders can do to ensure the mental health of their team? So many times, we only see a mental health problem when it blows up. So how can we recognize signs of a problem and create a culture where people feel safe to be their authentic selves? Michelle Dickinson is here to help us with this dilemma. Michelle is a well known and passionate mental health advocate. She is a TED speaker and a published author of her memoir entitled Breaking Into My Life. Her book gives readers a glimpse into her childhood experiences living with her bipolar mother. She also knows what it is like to struggle with a mental illness. Today she offers us her expertise in becoming a compassionate leader and creating a welcoming environment and accepting culture in the workplace.   Show Notes: [3:20] - Michelle describes what it was like to grow up with a mother with bipolar disorder and how it has shaped her as an adult. [4:41] - Michelle has peace with her childhood but believes that it has given her passion to help people in mental health. [5:30] - Her childhood taught her resilience and empathy and compassion for people suffering. There is nothing more painful than watching your mother cry and not being able to console her. [5:55] - Michelle was groomed as a little girl to put her own needs on the shelf and really focus on creating as much comfort for others as she can. [6:25] - Living through the “corona blues,” has had an impact on Michelle's mental health, but through coping strategies she has learned over the years have helped. [7:58] - Michelle was very successful in the corporate world prior to becoming a mental health advocate and describes how the workplace approached mental health and understanding. [9:26] - The leaders who get the most out of their team and really optimize the potential of their team are those leaders who have a strong sense of humanity. They are proactive and preemptive. [10:28] - Companies tend to be late in dealing with mental health, waiting for things to blow up and then dealing with it. The key in avoiding this is to be proactive. [11:24] - Start with a simple remit from the top levels of the organization that your company is inclusive of all people including those with mental illness. [12:24] - Cultivate trust between yourself as a leader with your team members so that when stress and anxiety become a problem they trust you to listen. [13:54] - As a leader, you have to treat the entire person as a person. You have to do your part in building trust. You do not need to play the role of a clinician. [15:03] - A leader needs to know where and how to direct someone to support. [17:23] - Compassion takes time, effort, and investment, but in the end you will have an employee that has a human connection and will seek help and want to return to work. [19:52] - Employers have such an incredible opportunity right now during the coronavirus pandemic to show up for their people and build loyalty that will last for a very long time. [20:38] - As an employee dealing with this pandemic and work environment change is to do things that keep you healthy, both physically and mentally. [22:34] - You need an environment that is accepting of your whole authentic self. As a leader, you need to help develop that welcoming environment and culture. [25:14] - Be a vulnerable human being first instead of focusing on your employees as numbers. Michelle recently concluded her 19-year pharmaceutical career and she has emerged with a strong desire to positively impact the mental health landscape. Key Points from the Episode with Michelle Dickinson: Michelle is a mental health advocate, trying to change the perspective on the issue and more care and knowledge around it Michelle has noticed a change in terms of the increasing openness and acceptance of mental illness and support for it in companies and communities. This was not the path she expected to be on, but it happened and was something she couldn’t avoid. Michelle grew up with a mother with bipolar, which she then spoke about in a TEDx, and wrote a book that was a memoire of her experiencing growing up with a parent with mental illness. We all have stigmas of what mental illness looks like, and Michelle is trying to help paint a different sense of what it really is. Her mother was physically, emotionally and verbally abusive because of her illness She talks about the pain of watching her mother crying inconsolably for hours and not having the ability to stop that pain It made Michelle feel paralyzed and powerless While this hurt, it also fueled a strong empathy an compassion within Michelle and connect with and see the pain in people It’s a powerless situation living with someone with mental illness, and a default for a lot of people can be to tell them to snap out of it, which is what Michelle’s father defaulted to often Michelle is adopted, so she did not worry about inheriting her mother’s mental illness, but life has taught her that no one is immune to it Michelle ended up going through a painful divorce that taught her that lesson first hand Michelle talked about the struggle in writing the book, and going back to her purpose helped her push ahead - she was trying to change the world around the issue of mental illness. As the book was being completed, Michelle’s marriage was coming apart. The two events coming together was the start of Michelle’s life moving to a new, open place. It was really three events as her big corporate job was coming to an end as she got downsized (as she was working on a mental health awareness group at the company, ironically) She made a decision to take that opportunity to make a shift in corporate culture around supporting employees as they struggle with mental illness She’s also focused on the first responder community given the mental burden they can easily face in their work, and the stigma around it as a weakness you have to hide Michelle is working with a local police department Sargent who struggled with PTSD herself to bring resilience and deescalation training to the first responder community. How can you help effectively if you can’t tell the difference between a criminal and someone in crisis? The Development Exponent: A Leadership Perspective

The United States is unique in many ways, but interestingly, one of those ways is that it is a bit behind when it comes to supporting mental health through the workplace. I speak often about the importance of creating mutually meaningful work engagements and there is no better context for that discussion than that of brain health. My guest on this episode is Michelle E Dickinson. She's a mental health advocate who has walked a path through what she calls a “mental health trifecta” that has guided her to a place of support, encouragement, and training for those interested in making the workplace a more supportive place for those struggling with mental health issues. Sadly, mental health still carries a stigma in Western culture, one that can and should be eliminated through education, compassion, and trust. It's my hope that you'll continue reading to discover what is being done and can be done to help American corporations and organizations become better equipped to support employees when it comes to their mental health. Why is the United States behind other nations in supporting mental health in the workplace? Canada and Australia for example, are far ahead of the United States when it comes to workplace initiatives that not only support but provide for the mental health support of employees. These initiatives are part of the overall inclusion strategies of most companies and turn out to be much more than a simple employee benefit. They are aimed at making their employees more productive and fulfilled through better care for them as individual human beings. One of the reasons the United States is not as far along is that for years mental health issues have been an invisible disability, something that people suffering from mental health challenges are ashamed to share. Or, those supporting a family member with mental health issues often feel unable to reveal the issue for fear of embarrassing or shaming their family member. When organizational leaders bravely take the first step, talking about these issues from their own experience, it sets the stage for those within the organization to willingly open up about their struggles too. While it may seem strange for this to happen in a working environment, it is a key component to developing a culture of trust and inclusiveness where mutually meaningful work engagements are possible.  When business performance overshadows compassion, we get into trouble Companies are in business to make money and to provide valuable services to their clients or customers. Employee performance is a key factor in making those outcomes a reality. But today's leaders are learning that a healthy company culture — which is the environment in which optimal performance happens — is vital to top performance for everyone within the organization. Company cultures that are unwilling to recognize the real-life struggles of their team members — like mental health issues — become self-defeating. The trust that is foundational for the development of high-performing teams simply can't happen if an individual's life situations are ignored or unaddressed. Leaders must express care for the members of their team if the team as a whole is to thrive. I guess I'm talking about "compassion-first" leaders. Michelle says it this way, “When business performance trumps compassion, we get into trouble.” That is a leadership responsibility. Why leaders must learn to couple compassion with trust Put yourself in the following situation: You have a challenging life situation going on and it's requiring such high levels of mental and emotional bandwidth that you are having a hard time keeping up with responsibilities at work. It's probably not a stretch for most of us to imagine. We've probably been there. Now change the scenario slightly and imagine the issue you're dealing with is a mental health issue. If your boss at work is a person who is solely results-oriented, they could be the type who is often heard to say, “I don't want excuses, I want results.” Ask yourself a few questions: “Do I feel comfortable sharing what's going on in my personal life with my boss? If not, why not?” The answer is likely that you don't feel that he/she would express compassion for you and the situation you're enduring, which in turn, makes it impossible for you to feel any level of trust toward them. Leaders who cannot express compassion toward the sometimes all-consuming issues their team members are going through will find it impossible to build an environment of trust. And without trust, employee fulfillment and morale will decline and retention will be a continual problem. It's not a beneficial road to be on for the company or team members. What kind of training is needed to make your organization supportive of mental health issues? During this conversation, Michelle described a program that is designed to help organizational leaders create a mutually meaningful work environment in view of mental health issues. Her area of expertise is to help forward-thinking organizations create safe and compassionate workplace cultures so they can improve engagement, retention, and productivity — especially as it relates to supporting mental health. The good news is that any organization can make strides toward improvement in supporting the mental health of its team members. It requires… A clear commitment to foster a culture of inclusion for those with invisible disabilities (mental health issues). It starts with leaders at the highest level and is expressed through compassionate corporate policies The company also needs to be committed to providing legitimate and easily accessible mental health support, not just as an employee benefit, but also in the form of relational support Naturally, everyone within the company needs education or training, especially those who are in leadership roles There are also options for developing employee-driven peer support programs where those who have experienced mental health challenges come alongside others who are currently walking those same paths Michelle makes it clear that no company is going to develop the ability to support mental health overnight, but that steps in the right direction go a long way in developing the trust necessary to support such initiatives and set them up for success. My hope is that more and more companies within the United States will adopt this compassionate model when it comes to supporting mental health for their employees. Naturally, those in positions of leadership have to set the example and start the forward motion. Our house has slipped from control into complete chaos, and I've moved from a sense of relief to a sense of Burden when Mom began her downward slide. 10:24 - She shares how difficult it was for her to sacrifice her childhood to support her mom. ** Yeah. Sure. My childhood was different, you know most kids have you know their stuff that happens in your childhood? Like my entire childhood was like painted by the backdrop that my mother was the priority in her illness was the focal point. 14:00 - How she turned her struggles into success ** I have to fast forward because like I couldn't see this at the time. I have to fast-forward to the back of my book where I have this epilogue where I highlight how growing up with someone like my mom actually serves me now. 15:42 - Make your mess your message ** I have a colleague that once said to me from your mess make your message. And I think that that is really the reality for me 17:20 - What are the benefits of exercising? ** Yeah, I believe in Fitness as a vehicle as advice to help you feel better. 19: 20 - Her journey in writing her book. ** Exactly. And so it's something that led me to okay. I'm going to write a book 19:50 - How she remembers her mom? ** Mmm. Yeah, you know I had this image of my mom before she had been diagnosed with bipolar. I think she probably was first affected by her illness when I was 4 or 5. 23:45 - Strategies that she can recommends to people who are in the same situation to what she grew up in. ** So, yeah, first of all the parent that isn't mentally ill the parent of the child in that relationship needs to make sure that child is getting the emotional mental 27:43 - The tool you can use to talk about your feelings anonymously inside a community ** Yeah, so and that's hard right if they don't want to get help if they haven't been formally diagnosed. 39:00 - What's so important about maintaining self-love about creating a good sense of self-esteem? ** * Oh, yeah, I mean, so that's something that I always struggled with my mom who wasn't there in my corner reminding me that I could have and do anything I wanted and that I was worthy of my dreams and that I was beautiful. ** And because if you can't see your own value, you basically are inviting other people to do the same. So I think something as simple as just like looking in the mirror and like reminding yourself. After years of playing the role of child care giver, Michelle embarked on her own healing journey of self discovery. Her memoir offers a rare glimpse into a young girl's experience living with and loving her bipolar mother. Michelle then spent years working to eradicate the mental health stigma within her own workplace at a fortune 500 company by elevating compassion, causing more open conversations and leading real change in how mental illness is understood in the corporate setting. She also knows firsthand what it feels like to struggle with a mental illness after experiencing her own depression due to challenging life events of her own. As a past volunteer with court appointed special advocates, the Make a Wish Foundation and serving as big sister with the Big Brothers, Big Sisters organization, elevating the wellbeing of our youth matters to her. Michelle's volunteer work led her to create her own children's program called Perfect Just The Way You Are. This program was designed to help youth better understand how to nourish the body and the mind and has reached over 2000 children and their families in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania in the last five years. The program recently evolved into a school-wide and student led mental health wellness fair. Michelle's intentions are to touch as many children's lives as possible with this program so that children proactively develop a healthy relationship to brain health.
