Rural communities across the region are joining forces to address the unique mental health challenges faced by farmers and their families. Community leaders emphasize that mental well-being is just as vital as physical health in the demanding world of agriculture. Local organizations are launching support groups and helplines, encouraging open conversations and peer support. The message is clear: no one should face these pressures alone. By breaking the stigma around mental health, rural communities aim to foster a stronger, more connected environment where reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Send us a textMental Health Awareness Month takes on powerful new meaning through the eyes of Dr. Richard Peate, a VA psychologist who's spent 18 years finding innovative ways to support veterans beyond traditional therapy. In this candid conversation, Dr. Peate unveils the trio of elements every veteran needs: purpose, belonging, and connection. The West Palm Beach VA is buzzing with activity this May – from weekly resource fairs to community socials where veterans can meet hospital leadership over half-priced tacos. But it's Dr. Peate's newest initiative that truly stands out: a Volunteerism Expo connecting veterans with 37 organizations across three counties."Veterans have an innate sense of wanting to serve," Dr. Peate explains, highlighting how volunteering taps into core military values while combating isolation and providing renewed purpose. Research even shows volunteers live longer – a testament to the healing power of giving back. Most compelling are the stories of small interactions that make enormous differences. One veteran podcast interview heard by the right person at the right time saved a life. A newsletter that seemed ineffective suddenly connected someone to life-changing equine therapy. These ripple effects remind us that mental health support comes in many forms. At its heart, Mental Health Awareness Month isn't about grand gestures but simple acceptance. "All you have to do is not judge and just be aware and accepting," Dr. Peate reminds us. Sometimes, the most powerful thing we can offer someone struggling is simply our time and attention.Explore upcoming VA events, discover volunteer opportunities, and learn how small moments of connection can create profound healing for our veterans. Sometimes the most meaningful service happens after the uniform comes off.
May is Mental Health Month. Ben Jarboe finds out what the Farm Credit System is doing to make resources available for farmers and their families. Christy Seyfert, the President and CEO of the Farm Credit Council in Washington D.C. tells him they recognize the unique struggles that farmers and their families may be facing. Yes, there is a chance of rain in the forecast. Pretty good timing considering all the acres that have already been planted in Wisconsin. Stu Muck shares the outlook. Weather is an important issue everyday in Wisconsin. From what you wear, to where you plant - it's part of the conversation. Now Wisconsinites have access to a newly enhanced network of weather stations that dot the state. Pam Jahnke takes a trip to Arlington to find out about the expansion of the Wisconet with Chris Vagasky, UW Meteorologist that's helping assemble the network. Meanwhile eyes continue to focus on potential cuts to programs and personnel that farms may depend on. Stephanie Hoff gets the perspective of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture. NASDA, advocates for state ag agencies in Washington D.C. One of the things it's pushing for in Congress is for states to get more support to tackle animal disease outbreaks and carry out prevention measures. A primary example is testing milk for highly pathogenic avian influenza, says Becky Garrison Warfel, director of public policy for NASDA. Markets have cooled since the announcement that China and U.S. were relaxing tariffs. John Heinberg, market advisor with Total Farm Marketing in West Bend talks with Pam Jahnke about where traders' attention is focused today. Monday gave us the first glimpse of what farmers will be planting in the World Ag Supply Demand Estimates (WASDE). Heinberg says that was the real driver on where corn and beans went Monday, and where cattle could be going this week!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We all judge books by their covers—but what happens when the cover tells one story, and the pages inside reveal another? This week on Chatter That Matters, I sit down with Mike Power, a testament to resilience. Mike appeared to have it all together: a top strategist, a two-time Boston Marathon runner, and a sharp conversationalist with wicked humour. But beneath that polished exterior was a battle with addiction, a journey to rock bottom, and a burning desire for reinvention. Mike shares his deeply personal story of losing control to alcohol and drugs, facing a devastating cancer diagnosis, and rebuilding trust with those who had lost faith in him. This is a raw, honest conversation about struggle, survival, and transformation. But Mike's story isn't just about overcoming darkness—but unlocking potential. Now, with his book Flow, he's guiding others to find their path to possibility, using a mix of deep reflection, mindset shifts, and practical steps to turn dreams into reality. We dive into his philosophy on manifesting a life you truly want, the energy state that allows us to break free from limitations, and why so many of us are more powerful than we realize. Whether facing obstacles or simply looking to improve your circumstances, this episode will enlighten you and challenge you to rethink what's possible. Don't miss it! Despite decades of government investment, significant research endeavour, and a growing commitment to mental health training and response activities in schools and workplaces, rates of mental health in Australia are rising. The scale of this issue is staggering: a recent report shows that 494,000 Australians with moderate to severe mental health problems are not receiving the support they desperately need. Long wait times and a shortage of mental health professionals are leaving vulnerable Australians without access to timely and appropriate care, particularly those in rural and remote areas. When people finally get care, it doesn't always help. We know the current system is broken. We know what we need – a robust mental health system that is well-staffed, adequately funded and integrated across the country that will lay the foundations for a mentally healthier future. But how do we get there? How do we plan for a better future? And what is the role of Health Professionals? Demaris gives Mal yet another reason to go to therapy when he discovers that she took another man on their planned date to see Bad Boys 4 (5:02). Meanwhile, he was at the Nick Grant show alone and ran into Punch from TDE (15:00). The team is in awe that he lived to tell the tale. Rory gives us an update on how sleep training is going (as you can probably tell by the pain in his voice, not well) (17:35). Elon has yet again found a way to further ruin twitter (we're never calling it ‘X', go to hell) by removing the ability to see other user's liked tweets. The team discusses their own likes and how instagram's activity tab used to ruin relationships (24:46). TW: Michael Rainey Jr (Tariq) was SA'd on a livestream in front of children and released a statement and they guys give their opinions on it. Guess how supportive they are? :) (49:21) They speak briefly on Hunter Biden's gun charges and his crackhead decision making skills (1:06:20), then suddenly Demaris & Mal burst into a fight about the ways they've violated each other over the years (1:15:20). Luckily, we have voicemails to cool off the energy. Have you ever wished someone dead and that wish came true (1:21:28)? Demaris' ex tried but she's still here. We also give a young couple some advice about insecurities (1:29:20), and Julian and Demaris give their coming out stories.
