In recognition of Men's Mental Health Month, I offer this not as a diagnosis but as a mirror—a reflection—of one man's honest reckoning with what it really means to “be a man” in a world that rewards our silence and buries our truth. Every June, we remember the tragic loss of great men—Robin Williams, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Anthony Bourdain. Men who made us laugh, think, feel… and then left us too soon. These weren't weak men. They were men crushed by the quiet torment of expectations they could no longer uphold. And the silence that made it impossible to ask for help. So let me say something that might cost me the stamp of being a “real man” in the eyes of some: Hi. My name is JC Doornick, and I get scared about many things. I know some will read that and think I've betrayed the code. That I've "outed the brotherhood." But I'm tired of pretending. I'm tired of losing men I love to silence. To pride. To pressure. To shame. And if sharing my truth helps even one man remove the mask, it's worth it. Because here's the truth: Being a man today is a zero-sum game. Stress and Anxiety by Month:A 2024 UK survey found adults aged 18-24 reported feeling stressed for an average of 11.3 days per month, compared to the national average of 10.3 days. Stress peaks were noted in January (post-holiday blues) and September (back-to-school or work transitions). While U.S.-specific monthly data is scarce, similar patterns are likely.Anxiety disorders, affecting 42.5 million U.S. adults annually, show anecdotal increases in November and December due to holiday-related stress, but hard data by month is lacking.Youth Mental Health:The CDC's 2022-2023 data on children (ages 3-17) shows 11% with diagnosed anxiety and 4% with depression, with no monthly breakdown but higher reported distress in winter months among adolescents, possibly linked to academic stress or SAD.Among adolescents (ages 12-17), 20% reported unmet mental health care needs in 2021-2023, with potential spikes in February and March due to school-related pressures, though exact monthly data isn't available.

This week on How Long 'Til Bedtime?, we're continuing our recognition of Men's Mental Health Month with an important and timely conversation about paternal postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety in fathers, and the overall mental health challenges new dads face. Sleep and wellness coach Allison Egidi is joined by Dr. Daniel Singley, a San Diego-based clinical psychologist, board-certified in cognitive behavioral therapy, and the founder of the Center for Men's Excellence. With over 20 years of clinical experience, Dr. Singley specializes in reproductive psychology and supporting men through the transition to fatherhood. Following last week's personal story with Christopher Rose, this episode offers a broader, expert-led perspective on why mental health for new fathers needs more attention—and what we can do about it. In this episode, Dr. Singley shares: Why men's mental health during the postpartum period is often overlooked The most common symptoms of paternal postpartum depression and anxiety (and how they differ from maternal symptoms) How invisibility during pregnancy and postpartum affects dads' emotional well-being Risk factors that make some fathers more vulnerable to postnatal mental health struggles Practical ways partners, friends, and professionals can support struggling dads How workplace policies, paternity leave, and cultural shifts can better support mental health in fathers Accessible resources for dads who may be hesitant to seek therapy Key Takeaways: Around 1 in 10 fathers experience postpartum depression, and even more experience postpartum anxiety—yet many remain undiagnosed and unsupported. Symptoms of male postpartum depression may include anger, irritability, withdrawal, substance use, or even physical symptoms like headaches and chest pain. When one parent is struggling, there's a 50% chance the other is too—proving the need for a whole-family approach to perinatal mental health care. #YMHMS Conversation. The timing couldn't have been better as we wrapped up Men's Mental Health Month. We dove deep into the idea that everything starts inward before it shows outward, from how we lead, love, and define purpose to the way we show up in the world. This life is a mirror, and it's crucial to keep a pulse on your mindset, your values, and how you process pain. We also spoke on the power of therapy and how storms, when faced, can lead to transformation and testimony. Grateful for the realness my brother! Check out the full conversation and pass it on to someone who needs it.
SummaryIn this raw and reflective episode of Dear God, Unscripted, Jordan sits down with his cousin—and brother in spirit—Ashyrii Ball, for a powerful conversation about Black manhood, mental health, and breaking generational patterns.Together, they revisit their upbringing in Southeast Texas, where young fathers were learning how to be men while raising sons who were silently watching. They explore what they learned (and unlearned) about emotional expression, discipline, boundaries, and love—and how those early lessons are now shaping the way they parent, show up in relationships, and care for their mental health. From funny childhood memories to deeply personal moments of vulnerability, this episode is an unfiltered look at what it means to grow up Black, male, and emotionally silenced—and how healing starts with learning to speak. Why This Matters:Men's Mental Health Month deserves real, honest conversations—not just headlines. This episode is our offering to that space. A reminder that emotional expression is not weakness, that parenting can be redemptive, and that breaking cycles takes more than intention—it takes action.00:00 – Opening Up: Why men's mental health matters05:27 – Manhood Defined: Early messages we learned as boys08:20 – Learning to Speak: Communication struggles and growth12:42 – Emotions Are Not Weakness: Reclaiming emotional expression17:35 – Childhood Reflections: What shaped the men we became23:29 – Becoming a Man: The transition from boyhood to adulthood31:00 – Looking Back: Memories that still teach us today35:25 – The Power of Communication: Why words matter in relationships42:17 – Creating Safe Spaces: Healing from emotionally distant upbringings

In the latest episode of Intellectual but Ignant, Mako and Boogie might've taken the “ignant” part a little too far. Due to some sound issues, we had to pull back from our usual interview format—but trust, we still covered a lot. Mako, in a surprising twist, shifted his long-standing hate from Asians to Indian people (with what he claims are valid reasons). We also touched on the overlap between Men's Mental Health Month and Pride Month, shared our thoughts on the hype around the upcoming Lil Wayne album, and even threw out some NBA Finals predictions. Anyway, I'm tired of typing so sit back, relax, and don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe. And make sure to follow us on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok!
