The story of the Three Little Pigs offers a surprisingly perfect framework for understanding how different approaches to divorce preparation yield dramatically different outcomes.Some clients rush through their divorce process, making quick, reactive decisions—building with "straw." They might retain the most aggressive attorney they can find out of anger or fear, or just try to "get it over with" because they're exhausted. Others put in a bit more effort—the "stick" builders—talking to lawyers, downloading checklists, maybe reading a book or two. But they often miss the deeper emotional preparation, conflict pattern awareness, and values clarification that truly matters.The wisest approach? Building with "bricks"—taking time to assess the landscape, understand the risks, and plan for resilience. This means assembling the right team (attorney, financial specialist, therapist, and yes, a divorce coach), getting clear on values and goals, developing communication skills, and learning emotional regulation. It’s been said that if you want to make God laugh, you should simply tell Him your plans. Sometimes we have a great understanding of how we think something should go. We set things up for it, plan for it, build to it, and then wait for it. It is so rare that things actually go according to our plan! Nehemiah had finished the work he had come to do in Jerusalem. He had planned for it, set things up for it, built for it, and then gone back to serve the king believing 100% that he had done all he needed to do to make sure Jerusalem would honor God. When he came back to visit he learned that all that he had worked for have been set aside. This wasn’t easy, and Nehemiah pleaded with God to remember him for the good that he did and not the results that he got. For us, we need to think about not just our plans to do good, but also how to “keep the house clean”. Are there rooms of your life still set aside for your flesh? I think most of us can agree that when a large list of names is in the Bible it is easy to skip by them and move on, but a question we should be asking is why did the author put those names in? It is because God cares about the details! If you have ever been in charge of planning an event, you know there is a moment where you switch from the big picture to the small details because they matter. It matters who was selected to work in the temple. It matters who was to take part in dedicating the wall. It even matters that each priest went through each step of purification before they served in the Temple. Details matter! In Nehemiah 11-12, there were questions around "Who was going to live in Jerusalem?", "Who would be responsible for the Temple?", and even "Who is going to watch over the storerooms?" The great reality is God had long ago decided and been orchestrating things to the point of being able to answer those questions. He long ago put the right people in the right spots and brought their stories to this pinnacle point where they could walk into what God has for them. I believe this is still true today! God is working the details of YOUR story so YOU can walk into what God has for you. The question for the Israelites and for us today is how are we going to respond? Join us this Sunday as we look at how God is actively shaping our lives for where He is leading us and even where He is inviting us to have a few more parties.
