The Documentary Accountability Working Group (DAWG) is making quite an impact in the documentary film world, promoting a framework for values-based documentary ethics and practices. Natalie Bullock Brown is its director, and she's my guest this time around. We talk about DAWG's suggestions as to how people agreeing to appear in documentaries ought to be treated, with regard to compensation, psychological services, community outreach and more. There's some great overlap between this conversation and my podcast conversations with Byron Hurt and Jennifer Tiexiera & Camilla Hall, so please check those out too. Along with her work at DAWG, Natalie is an award-winning film producer who also teaches at North Carolina State University. She's held several fellowships, including one at the Harvard Kennedy School's Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy. More about Natalie here. Today on the podcast, I sit down for an incredibly open and honest conversation with Natalie Bullock Brown. I personally have had the privilege of knowing Natalie since high school. Natalie has always been one of those people who lights up every room she's in. Her smile radiates, and she has a huge, huge, compassionate heart for others. She's also incredibly passionate about finding equality in the world and in particular, as a documentary filmmaker of color, she's interested in having the story of Black people told from the perspective of those who have lived it. Natalie is an award winning, Emmy nominated producer, and a Teaching Assistant Professor in Interdisciplinary Studies at North Carolina State University. Which is why when I thought about the importance of having a conversation about how we as business owners can start to think differently about diversity and embrace Black Lives Matter in an honest and genuine way, there was no question in my mind who I wanted to have this conversation with. 2020 has shown us so much civil unrest and 2021 still calls for us to change in profound ways. Natalie sits down with me for an honest conversation and shares some great insights how we as business owners, as community leaders, as members can truly shift the way we think, act, and live. I'm hoping this is the first of many conversations with Natalie. She's an incredibly powerful figure because she's so willing to share her honest truth. So carve out some time, this is a bit of a longer episode, and I hope that it calls you to some action today.

Minister Louis Farrakhan, spiritual leader of the African American Muslim group, the Nation of Islam, created some ten years ago what we have come to know as the million man march. He called it a day of atonement for African American men. What did that event really accomplish? And now ten years later, what will yet a second million-something event do? Natalie Bullock Brown moderates this discussion.

According to a report by the Governor's Commission on Crime, the number of gangs in 1999 survey was listed as 332 with over five thousand identified gang members. In a 2004 survey, there were 387 gangs and more than eight thousand, five hundred gang members. Do these numbers reflect a gang problem in North Carolina? If so, what can be done about it? A detective with the Durham County Sheriff's office--which has a unit dedicated to monitoring and controlling gangs in Durham--has published a book for parents, teachers, and others to help educate them on how to recognize gang symbols and protect their children and themselves. Find out what he and others say you need to know about gangs in your community, no matter where you live. Natalie Bullock Brown moderates.
