The Hazing From Hell, LA Frat Kills Another Student By “Accident” Authorities in Baton Rouge have announced two more arrests in the death of Caleb Wilson, a 20-year-old Southern University student who died after being repeatedly punched during an alleged off-campus fraternity hazing ritual. Police said Tuesday that 25-year-old Kyle Thurman and 28-year-old Isaiah Smith have been charged with felony criminal hazing in connection with the fatal incident. Wilson, a junior studying mechanical engineering, died in late February. Last week, investigators arrested 23-year-old Caleb McCray on charges of criminal hazing and manslaughter. Police allege that McCray punched Wilson four times before the pledge collapsed, became unresponsive, and appeared to experience a seizure. Surveillance footage reviewed by law enforcement shows Smith removing Wilson from his vehicle and taking him to a hospital. According to a police arrest warrant affidavit, the group initially told medical staff that Wilson had collapsed while playing basketball at a park, then left before officers arrived. Baton Rouge Police Department Chief Thomas Morse Jr. said Wilson died as a “direct result” of the hazing. Smith, who held the title “Dean of Pledges,” was allegedly in charge of overseeing the ritual. Authorities say he turned himself in on Tuesday. Smith's attorney, Franz Borghardt, emphasized that his client is not accused of making physical contact with Wilson and that no one was aware of any underlying medical conditions the student might have had. “This was a freak accident; we're not talking about force-feeding alcohol,” Borghardt said. “To be sure, everyone in that fraternity cares about Caleb. Our hearts go out to the Wilson family.” While both Smith and Thurman allegedly participated in punching some of the nine pledges, they are not described in police affidavits as having hit Wilson. The hazing took place at a warehouse owned by Smith's father, Todd Smith, who has not responded to requests for comment. Thurman could not be reached, and no information about legal counsel for him was immediately available. Phillip Robinson, McCray's attorney, said his client is innocent and urged the public to refrain from judgment. In Louisiana, hazing can be prosecuted as a felony under the 2018 Max Gruver Act, which carries penalties of up to a $10,000 fine and five years in prison when serious injury or death results. Organizations and educational institutions may also face penalties under the act. Omega Psi Phi, the fraternity Wilson was pledging, could face civil penalties. A spokesperson said the organization is cooperating with authorities. The campus chapter of the fraternity has been suspended, and Greek life organizations at Southern University have been barred from taking on new members for the remainder of the academic year, according to President Dennis Shields. Teachers, Principals, Fraternity & Sorority Hazing: What is it about school role plays that spankos find so fascinating?  We sat down (some of us more comfortably than others) after doing many different school-themed role plays at GASP 2024 and talked with some of the participants (on both sides of the paddle) to find out!  We discuss all aspects of the school events, from organization and planning, to playing the principal and the naughty sorority pledge. While, of course, we each have our own personal reasons for enjoying school-themed play, you'll be amazed at how much we have in common.  If you haven't tried a school role-play yourself, perhaps this episode may pique your interest, or kindle some new ideas!  Is that the school bell I hear? A new mishnah! How the courtroom works - welcoming the witnesses with some scare tactics to make sure that they testify honestly. Note that witnesses are supposed to be designated as such. The judges weigh in, and the proceeding details exactly what needs to happen to rule innocent or guilty -- though each judge is anonymous with regard to the public of the case itself. Plus, the role of an "instigator" -- one who brings another party to do wrong. In the case of an instigator, the court doesn't need to seek out his innocence (as compared to other cases), as derived from the snake in the Garden of Eden. Also, in the event that a debtor admits to his debt before witnesses - that plus a formal act of acquisition means they can write an accord of his debt and that's so much stronger than testimony. And before 3 witnesses - the question is whether they become a court, with or without the formal act of acquisition and whether they can write that account.

From the military to athletics to campus fraternity and sorority life, students and others endure hazing to satisfy the basic human desire to be part of a group. It operates in the shadows, but when hazing does appear in the headlines, it is often associated with tragic consequences. Elizabeth Allan, professor of higher education leadership at UMaine's College of Education & Human Development, has studied hazing throughout her career and become an authority on the subject. Founder of StopHazing.org, Allan's recent hazing education efforts encouraged Congress to craft legislation, which was recently signed into law, that addresses this national phenomenon.
