In this episode, Charlie Higson digs into the dark world of a man sometimes called the first serial killer.Gilles de Rais was accused of, and eventually confessed to some awful, depraved crimes, and this was a man who was a companion in arms of Joan of Arc!At his trial, he was hanged for the murder of 140 children, both young men and women, killed for sexual pleasure and to help him in satanic rituals. So did he do it? There were confessions, many of which you can read even today, full of disturbing detail, but nevertheless, from nearly 600 years ago, still there for us to try and decipher. A far easier route however is to press 'play' on this podcast as Charlie and Matthew Lewis try and separate fact from hearsay. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Potter Discussion: Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts and the Wizarding World Fandom
Send us a textIn this episode we discuss cameos that should appear in the new Harry Potter TV show. Enjoy!Topics/Summary:· 2:14 Tom Felton as Lucius Malfoy. If we have a reminder of all Draco went through in the films, we could understand his character earlier on. Perhaps we could make deeper revelations on his character by the end of the TV show compared to the film. · 11:38 Harry Melling as a background wizard. Dudley's arc is one of the most heartwarming in the story, despite the fact that he starts as a big bully. If we see him as a wizard, that will show us his evolution as a character. We get a glimpse at what life could have been when he says goodbye to Harry, and I want to keep that at the back of our mind when watching his character from the beginning.· 18:53 Matthew Lewis as a herbology assistant. Neville grows up to be the herbology teacher at Hogwarts. We can't put him in as Professor Sprout, but on the side would work well. I want to give the viewer the reminder that Neville has a long arc ahead of him and is headed for greatness.· 22:55 Mark Williams as Slughorn. Slughorn is very wishy-washy when it comes to the memory, and I want Mr. Weasley to come in and bring some integrity to the character. That would be a great choice to bring some honor to Slughorn.· 25:15 The reason why I chose these cameos is to remind us where we came from. I want to keep the films in mind when watching the TV show, but we shouldn't lean on them and use them as the sole point of comparison. The TV show should be another piece to the fandom that will give us another perspective on the characters we think we know so well.Having anything you want to hear or say? They are the titans of the spy novel, who have elevated thrillers to the level of literary fiction. Much imitated, much adapted by the big and small screens, Ian Fleming and John Le Carré have painted our picture of post-war espionage: Fleming through the dashing figure of James Bond, with his lush locations and Martinis as icy as his heart; Le Carré through his damning portrait of the British secret service drawn from his own time in MI5 and MI6. But which of the two novelists is the greater? In this thrilling contest, Fleming's case was made by Anthony Horowitz, creator of the bestselling Alex Rider spy novels and author of the official Bond continuation novel Trigger Mortis. Championing Le Carré – whose memoir about his life as a former spy currently sits in the bestseller lists – was David Farr, Emmy-nominated screenwriter of the BBC's adaptation of The Night Manager. Actors Lesley Manville, Simon Callow, Matthew Lewis and Alex Macqueen joined us to bring both authors' works to life along with our host, author and critic Erica Wagner. ---- If you'd like to become a Member and get access to all our full ad free conversations, plus all of our Members-only content, just visit intelligencesquared.com/membership to find out more. Why are housing and urban land use so central to climate policy? In this episode, I try to answer the question squarely, in dialogue with Matthew Lewis of California YIMBY. We discuss why EVs alone can't decarbonize transportation fast enough, how the climate-driven insurance crisis will bankrupt states, why the climate movement's own internal NIMBYs are its greatest impediment, and when green philanthropists and leaders will finally catch up. Right trusty and well beloved, we greet you well! On the 16th November 1272 Henry III died after a 56 year reign. His rule spanned the better part of the 13th century, and took England from the disaster that was King John to the conquering macho that was Edward I. Neatly sandwiched in between these two vastly different kingships is Henry III, the man who gave us Westminster Abbey , peace with France and Scotland; and Parliament, as a regular place of meetings for government officials. Henry may not have the best posthumous PR, but we're here to fix that. Please welcome to the podcast Matthew Lewis, historian, author and podcaster. That's right. This was the episode I cried. The latest episode of The KJ Today Show is now live, and it's packed with incredible moments and meaningful moments. We delved into the world of darts, pop culture, and even had a special guest from Harry Potter! Here are three key takeaways from this episode: 1. Positive Vibes and Happy Tears One of the standout moments from this episode was when I nervously shared a personal story about finding joy and happiness after a period of grief. It was a powerful reminder that even in challenging times, we can rediscover ourselves and experience moments of pure happiness. The podcast highlighted the importance of embracing change and growth, even after facing significant losses. Hear how our trip to New York for the US Darts Masters re-ignited my joy and hopefully inspires you to do the same! 2. Engagement News and Proud Mom Moments From interviewing top darts players to chatting with Matthew Lewis from Harry Potter, the episode showcased how no matter what you do in life, family matters. From the engagement announcement by darts world champion, Luke Humphries to a proud "Look What I Did, Mom" moment from fellow darts pro, Nathan Aspinall, get ready for all the feels. 3. Building Community and Creating Magic Through Darts The conversation with Matthew Lewis about the differences between darts culture in the UK and the US provided fascinating insights. The discussion touched on the unique aspects of darts as a sport, the role of tradition and community, and how the sport is evolving to attract a diverse audience. For Halloween 2023, we bring you one of the craziest novels of all time (or certainly of the eighteenth century). Matthew Lewis's The Monk (1796) is a tale of horny Catholics – men and women, in the clergy and not – sexy nuns, ultraviolence, and, as Katie puts it, “dinosaurism.” See, Satan turns into a pterodactyl to open up a can of whoop-ass on the Monk. Based. Another extremely based thing that happens, this smokin' lady monk named Matilda turns out to be a wizard, does a full-on black mass, AND DOMMES THE PRINCE OF DARKNESS HIMSELF. It's trashy as hell, it's metal af, and we're talking all the classic gothic themes – sex, desire, critiques of power and patriarchy, and how eighteenth-century Britons are constitutionally incapable of being even slightly normal about the “Romish religion.” We read the Oxford edition with notes and introduction by Nick Groom, but we kinda recommend the Penguin for the cover art alone, which really gets at the dinosaurism in question (it also has full frontal, which is very much in keeping with the spirit of The Monk). For more on the gothic and Lewis's place within it, we highly recommend friend-of-the-pod Michael Gamer's Romanticism and the Gothic: Genre, Reception, and Canon Formation, as well as Angela Wright's chapter on Lewis and Ann Radcliffe in The Cambridge History of the Gothic, Vol. I. In this thrilling contest, Fleming's case will made by Anthony Horowitz, creator of the bestselling Alex Rider spy novels and author of the official Bond continuation novel Trigger Mortis. Championing Le Carré – whose memoir about his life as a former spy currently sits in the bestseller lists – will be David Farr, Emmy-nominated screenwriter of the BBC's adaptation of The Night Manager. You may have never heard of redeye bass or seen one. Yet they are a wonderful fly-rod fish. They live in spectacular, clear mountain streams and take a fly very well. They're mainly found in the deep South, particularly in Alabama, so they're a great fly-rod target in places where you would not ordinarily think of fly fishing. They're a native species that deserve more visibility from the fly-fishing community and my guest, Matthew Lewis [44:27], is perhaps the world expert on fly fishing for them. In the fly box this week, we have some interesting questions and great tips from listeners, including: What percentage of the time do trout in lakes feed on the surface? What is a go-to fly for late summer fishing on small streams? What can I do to prevent foul-hooking so many fish? And when I hook a trout in the belly, is it sure to die? Do oils from our hands harm trout? Do you have some general rules of thumb for how rain affects fly fishing? I am using wide gape hooks and missing a lot of small brook trout. Is it the hook that's my problem? I saw some large brown trout in shallow water around spawning season and could not get them to take a fly. What can I do? What do you think of the Double Davy Knot? A listener shares a killer nymph pattern he developed. When I practice casting, why does the end of my leader fray and my fly line loop come apart? Do you ever guide? I fish a stream with rainbow trout, and for the first six months of the season I can't find them. Where do they go? How much less backing fits on a spool when I use 30-pound backing instead of 20-pound? Are the natural materials we use for fly tying from ethically treated animals?
