Bruce is a best selling author and technology leader from the UK.  He is one the most respected thought leaders on the subject of workplace culture and the future of work. After 12 years running Twitter in Europe and previously YouTube in the UK, his book on improving workplace culture, The Joy of Work, became a Sunday Times number one business bestseller in 2019. His new book, Fortitude: How to Unlock Your Inner Strength, is already repeating this success. In Fortitude, Bruce disproves the myth that only extraordinary people are successful, showing how we can achieve a sense of control through simple mind exercises, and, above all, how we can draw on those around us to empower ourselves and build our inner-strength. The book, and this conversation, set out a practical path to greater self-confidence and courage, not just for the elite few, but for us all.Listen as we discuss:All of the bad information on resilience floating around. How the explosion in Beirut triggered his pursuit of understanding resilience. Why do some less fortunate kids do better than others?Gen Z is far more willing to express and address their emotions. We are not predetermined to end up as a victim of our experiences. The most elite athletes have had moments of trauma. We should speak about resilience as the strength we draw from each other.People naturally come together in disasters, despite what Hollywood shows. When people own their identities, they live healthier lives. How does control improve resilience? The lack decision making power in our jobs, despite our liabilities, hurts us.Bruce's secret for happiness at work? Manlihood.com/brotherhood For More From Josh Hatcher at Manlihood.com http://manlihood.com http://joshhatcher.com In World War II, paratroopers would yell “Geronimo!” as they jumped out airplanes into battle. Growing up on Looney Tunes, I heard the shouting of that name many times over the years, and associated it with bravery and courage. But who was Geronimo? By all accounts in his day, he would have been seen as an outlaw. A rogue Apache on the run from the US Government. But his story is one of a man with an unquenchable fire to fight for freedom for his people. He was born in 1829 in what would eventually become Arizona. His actual name, Goyahkla, means “one who yawns.” He lived among the Chiricahua tribe of Apaches, and as he came of age, his people were at war with the Mexicans in the South and the US government to the North, as well as a constant war with the Comanche and Navajo. In 1851, a group of Mexican soldiers led by Colonel Jose Maria Carrasco attacked his family camp while he was away, killing his wife, his mother, and his three children. As was custom, he burned his family's belongings and headed into the forest to grieve. Goyahkla said he heard a voice in the wilderness that told him, “No bullet will ever hurt you. I will guide your arrows.” Imbued with courage from this prophecy, He declared his own war, and stalked and killed the soldiers that murdered his family. Historians aren't sure where the name Geronimo appeared. It could be a mispronouncing of his name, or could be associated with the sound of Mexican soldiers crying out to Saint Jerome as they were being killed by the vengeful warrior - but somehow, the name Geronimo stuck in the cultural consciousness. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/manlihood/message

November 1: All SaintsSolemnity; Liturgical Color: WhiteHeaven is populated with holy people known to God aloneMartyrs were so revered in the early Church that their places and dates of death were sanctified by the candles, prayers, and votive offerings of the faithful, grateful for their witness. So many were the martyrs, though, that by the early fourth century it became impossible to solemnize each individually on the Church's crowded calendar. There thus arose, over centuries, and in different ways in different regions, the custom of commemorating the memory of all the holy ones on one specific day of the year. By the early eighth century, a Feast of All Saints was celebrated in Rome on November 1. The Feast was extended to the entire Church in the next century. The universal sanctoral calendar of the Catholic Church is like a saint's All-Star team. Only the most talented make the cut. There are many more canonized saints besides those on the universal calendar. Some saints are commemorated only locally or regionally, others are historically obscure, and still others did not give a sufficiently universal witness to merit inclusion on the Church's universal calendar. The Church defines a saint as a soul enjoying the Beatific Vision in heaven. So, besides the famous saints found on the universal calendar and the lesser-known saints not on that calendar, there are still many more souls in heaven not officially recognized as saints at all. These are the saints we celebrate in a particular way today. The Solemnity of All Saints commemorates all those holy men, women, children, martyrs, confessors, and unknown others who lived lives of such holiness that upon death they either entered directly into God's presence in heaven or duly purified their soul of every imperfection in purgatory before then advancing into His presence. All-Star saints such as Saint Augustine and Saint Francis of Assisi stand shoulder to shoulder in heaven with forgotten grandmas, quiet uncles, and unknown martyrs. These unrecognized but holy souls did not convert entire tribes, found religious communities, or have their bones crushed by the jaws of lions in the arena. Maybe they just kept their mouth shut when they had just the right words to humiliate a family member. Magnanimity. Perhaps they cooked dinner night after night for their family out of a sense of duty, while they gazed out the kitchen window, dreaming of another life far away doing greater deeds. Humility. Or maybe they refused to cooperate with an immoral boss and lost their job, never to recover financially, their dreams ruined for a principled stance. Fortitude. The dense population of heaven is unknown to us on earth, but not to God, the audience of One we should most desire to please. There are as many pathways to God as there are people, since God wants to make a project of each and every one of us. All the saints lived heroic lives in their own unique ways. Some were the steeple to the village, seen by all and inspiring others to greatness. But most saints had lower profiles. They were more like the squat stone blocks forming the church's foundation, silently holding up the entire structure. They received little notice or credit despite buttressing the entire building. Without their support, the church and all of its luster would collapse.Today we commemorate those silent and sturdy ones who, without cease and without complaint, buttressed the family, the marriage, the parish, the Church, the community, the faith. Among the communion of saints are some few illustrious citizens whose virtues sparkle on their special days. But today we honor, remember, and seek to imitate that broader population of heaven never raised to the public altars but who offered their lives in quiet ways to God. They received the Body of Christ and lived His teachings in an exemplary manner in season and out of season until all seasons converged and God called them back to Himself. All holy men and women, so close to us yet still so far, gather our prayers to yourselves and intercede in heaven on our behalf. May our holy desires be accomplished through that chorus of prayers you constantly present to the Father surrounded by all His angels in heaven.

John Muir was also known as “John of the Mountains” - which is a moniker that I'm sure captured the heart of this Scottish-American naturalist. This Episode is Brought To you by HAINES KNIVES Find your new favorite knife at HainesKnives.com/mancast or follow on social media @birdforge Testicular Fortitude means having deep seated masculine courage and strength. Balls. Guts. Manlihood. Testicular Fortitude on the Manlihood ManCast is where we take a look at men who have beat the odds, men whose courage has left a lasting legacy. John Muir's adventuresome heart reflects the courage and wanderlust of a man with Testicular Fortitude. A philosopher, zoologist, botanist, glaciologist, and an advocate for the preservation of the North American Wilderness, he earned the title of “Father of National Parks.” Born in Scotland, he endured many whippings from his father for pursuing “anything other than Bible studies.” Those pursuits included exploring the forests and coastline, and fighting. His family moved to Wisconsin was he was 11, and he later went on to drop out of college, with enough chemistry, botany, and geology knowledge to devote to study the wilds. He took a job in an Indianapolis wagon wheel factory, and his innovation and creativity helped him move up to the role of supervisor, but a freak accident would change the course of his life. A file slipped and cut his cornea. And he spent the next several weeks recovering in a dark room hoping that he would regain his sight. That pivotal moment in the darkness caused him to evaluate his purpose… Muir said, “This affliction has driven me to the sweet fields. God has to nearly kill us sometimes, to teach us lessons". And he then devoted his life to exploration. He set off on a thousand mile hike from Kentucky to Florida, then he sailed to Cuba where he studied sea shells and plants, and after many other journeys, he ended up at Yosemite, where he fell in love with the land. He founded the Sierra Club, which would advocate for the preservation of Yosemite and other places that would go on to become National Parks. He personally guided President Teddy Roosevelt on a tour of Yosemite, and they slept beneath Sequias, and became friends. Muir's many writings describe not only the scientific observations of nature, but a theological and philosophical perspective that viewed nature as “straight from the hand of God.” I'm honoring John Muir as a man with Testicular Fortitude, not only for his passion for nature, but for his ferocity in preserving it. At a time when the industrial revolution was in full swing, and progress and expansion required more and more from our natural resources, Muir fought back, and advocated not that progress should necessarily cease, but that wilderness itself was a virtue, and worth preserving. I'll end with this quote from John Muir. “Keep close to Nature's breasts… and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb those voluptuous mountains or spend a week deep in the woods. Wash yourself clean…seriously wash yourself, you could get a disease or something.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/manlihood/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/manlihood/support

Fall is beginning. That means winter is coming. Nothing new there - it's been happening for thousands of years. But before we move on or start looking ahead too soon, we should slow down and smell the... pumpkins? Maybe not. But we should slow down and think for a while - not about the world or even your nation, but you...personally. What is happening in your life and what future are you headed towards? How have you actually grown so far this year? These questions are easy to ask and read (or listen to), but will we take the time to consider and answer them? This episode is not a conversation. I am reading two articles from the Fall 2022 edition of the Magnolia Journal. I'm reading it because I found them useful and hope you will as well. Are you ready for a history lesson that has more meaning than ever today? This week you'll learn about a PHILOSOPHY that originated more than 2000 years ago and flourished during the Roman and Greek empires.  I've invited RYAN HOLIDAY for a fascinating discussion about STOICISM.  He is one of the foremost experts on this way of thinking that teaches ETHICS, VIRTUE, SELF-CONTROL, and FORTITUDE as a way of overcoming destructive emotions. What you're about to hear will blow your mind and open you up to IDEAS you've never heard before. Ryan has been studying stoicism all his adult life. He is going to give you straight answers to the questions…Why is it that nobody has more pain than the LAZY?What makes COURAGE, SELF-DISCIPLINE, JUSTICE, and WISDOM so important to stoicism? What makes AMBITION a double-edged sword and PERFECTIONISM a vice?Stoicism is also predicated on finding an optimal relationship with DISCOMFORT.  Ryan will help you FRAME YOUR THINKING to succeed the best way possible by taking on tough challenges.  Part of that also relates to how you structure your MORNING ROUTINES which are critical to how successful the rest of your day is.We're also going to get into an extended discussion of DISCIPLINE VS. TEMPTATION.  If you want to get anywhere in life, you've got to cultivate discipline.  Part of that also involves how you deal with losing control over your EMOTIONS and why SILENCE is often an essential form of STRENGTH.Although STOICISM dates back more than two millennia, the ideas are timeless, and I think the principles Ryan espouses may be a perfect way forward in a world that feels like it has frequently lost its way.Open your mind, listen, and I think at the end of the hour, you'll agree…

Lexi Czar is a 27-year-old young woman from Creston, BC, Canada. She created Lyme disease awareness apparel and is and is thinking about relaunching her brand in the future. Prior to suffering the extreme symptoms of Lyme disease, Ms. Czar was a full-time student with a part-time job and was involved in many extracurricular sports and activities. She traveled throughout British Columbia and Alberta and was an extremely happy person with a great group of friends. Ms. Czar struggled with health issues as a child after a bad case of mono, but once she entered college her symptoms became more persistent. She had severe migraines and chronic fatigue which were dismissed and attributed to being a stressed college student. Unfortunately, Ms. Czars symptoms continued to worsen and expand, including body pain, insomnia, restless legs, bone issues, anxiety, and depression. After contracting dengue fever and being exposed to toxic mold, she was finally diagnosed with Lyme disease when she was 22. Ms. Czar was bit by another tick and reinfected with Powassan virus, Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF), Babesia, and Bartonella after making progress recovering from her initial Lyme diagnosis. Some of the treatment modalities she has used over time include stem cells, kambo, peptides, microdosing (with psilocybin), herbal antibiotics, ozone, light therapy, Rife, the FREmedica WAVE device, and more. If you would like to learn how a young woman from Canada is using a variety of non-standard treatment protocols to recover from chronic Lyme disease and co-infections, then tune in now! TESTICULAR FORTITUDE is brought to you by HAINES KNIVES - http://hainesknives.com Imagine taking a lead musketball to your arm, having it sawn off in a field hospital, and then going on to explore uncharted and impassable rivers on a raft with only one good arm… As his name would suggest, John Wesley Powell was the son of a Methodist preacher. He grew up with a fascination for exploration and nature, and as a young man, went on several river expeditions to study fossils and geology along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. But then the Civil War broke out, and he earned a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the Union Army. At the battle of Shiloh, his right forearm was shattered by a minie-ball, and his arm was amputated. He continued to serve in the army throughout the war, helping with Sherman's artillery. After the war, he assumed the role of professor of natural sciences at Illinois Wesleyan University and curator of the Illinois Natural History Society Museum. But you can't keep a man like Powell contained to the classroom. With one arm, he went on to explore Pike's Peak and the front range of the Rockies. In 1868 he put together an expedition to explore the Colorado River from Wyoming down through the Grand Canyon. Powell, along with a crew of hunters, trappers, civil war vets. He was begged not to go. One arm through dangerous uncharted rapids is dangerous business. But he went anyway. And that trip was worthy of those warnings. One of the party's rafts sank in Utah, tanking about a fourth of their supplies and most of their scientific equipment. Four days later, the party entered the Grand Canyon, and marveled at the beautiful rock formations… but they almost lost another boat, and in that mishap, they lost even more of their food. Three men left the expedition, tired of the hard journey. Those three men were killed by a band of natives who thought they were invading their territory. As Powell and the remaining crew made it to area that is known now as Lake Mead in Nevada, he halted the expedition, returning two years later with another crew to make accurate maps of the Colorado River. These expeditions yielded much geographic information, as well as linguistic and cultural information about the Native Americans living in the area. Anytime we look at history, we can see positives and negatives. Critics of Powell's work say that some of his ideas and opinions about the native population dehumanized them and had a large impact on the public policies that would have a brutal effect on their relationship with the US Government and the Westward Expansion. And while I may not agree with everything Powell said, did or thought, we can certainly agree that he was a man whose courage and relentless adventuring spirit show that he had testicular fortitude! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/manlihood/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/manlihood/support

This episode carries content warnings for violence, displacement, insects, and a  brief description of a corpse.  The Divine Fealty knew what they had seen instantly, identifying it in something before or beyond language. Appropriate, since the Twilight Mirage, once its home, had always been more than just a simple place or a proper noun. It did not matter if their elect, Veronique, could understand what they'd seen in this way, only that she would support Fealty in what must be done. And so, an escape. And so, a kingdom among debris. And so, a kidnapping. And so, a confrontation between Divines. Now wounded, the two Anchors float back in the direction they came from, drawing ever closer to the purple dot in the distance.    This week on Friends at the Table: The Road to PALISADE: HOUNDs Pt. 2 Records Recovered from the Divine, Arbitrage Factions The Divine Principality: Stitched together thousands of years ago from the remains of the Divine Free States and the Principality of Kesh, it is largest empire in the history of the MIlky Way Galaxy. Even now, divided against itself, any subdivision of its arms stretches further than any kingdom or confederation ever has before. An utter failure.  Stel Kesh: Among the oldest operating powers in the stars. Devoted to the Past even though they've long lost control of the Divine who shares its name. Snobbish historians, ineffective parliamentarians, and stubborn reactionaries. Kesh is generally aligned with the Curtain of Divinity.  Stel Nideo: WIth origins in the long lost Twilight Mirage, Stel Nideo are architects of our current era, dread controllers of the Present. Along with shaping mass media, popular culture, and educational standards, they now operate both Received and Progressive Asterism, the former run by the corrupt Cycle and the latter by the grotesque puppet of the lost prophet Gur Sevraq. These priests, pop idols, and patriotic poster children are largely aligned with the Curtain of Divinity. Stel Orion: For hundreds of thousands of years, Stel Orion—under countless names and forms—has repeated a cycle of exploitation and revolution. Competing spirits of individualism and camaraderie ebb and flow, but industry remains. Is it any wonder that it remains associated with the raw breadth of Space itself? Currently, Orion is at war with itself, with countless small factions not only differing in position on the larger civil war in the Principality, but also on many additional issues like wealth, religion, and culture. Stel Columnar: Famously “courted” by the growing Principality many generations ago, this nation of humanoid synthetics traded freedom for the prestige and security of the Principality. They hid behind imperial walls and pursued the Future, pushing boundaries not only in technology, but in art, commerce, and war. I suppose I can call them cousins, but not with much fondness. Today, they share righteous screeds and fight for the return of something like democracy as part of the Pact of Necessary Venture. What a comedy.  Stel Apostolos: An ancient people, ever obsessed with external conquest and internal freedom, and utterly uninterested in understanding their own contradictions. They are dedicated to the pursuit of forward Motion, and I suppose I can respect such bullheaded devotion. It is, at the very least, not boring. They are the meat and muscle of the Pact of Necessary Venture. The Curtain of Divinity: For generations, the Curtain of Divinity operated in the shadows of the Principality, partly as intelligence agency, partly as shadow government. Now they have been dragged into the daylight, and serve as one of the two ruling factions of the whole Principality. Though there are some divisions along questions of secularity, humanism, and cultural taste, in general, leaders of the Curtain are conservative, traditionalist, and nationalistic. They seek the reunification of all five Stels and the permanence of the Divine Principality. Led, in public at least, by Cynosure Whitestar-Kesh, the Peaceful Princept. In fact, the Curtain has five divisions, each led by a ruthless individual known only by a codename: Silk (diplomacy), Damask (research & inquisition), Lace (military), Linen (economics), and Gabardine (espionage and collaboration). The Pact of Necessary Venture: As their (current) name suggests, the Pact began as a cooperative exploratory committee founded in the late 14th Century of the Perfect Millennium. They sought new territory to conquer, breaking an old taboo in the process, and inviting destruction and fracture. Which is appropriate, as their vision for the future is one where each Stel is granted more autonomy and independence—some even claim that they would see the Principality utterly destroyed and replaced by a loose affiliation of free states.  Despite this, the Pact are no radicals: While they want more independence from the Principality, they have little interest in shaking up the internal power structures of the Stels themselves. After all, their founders were all Elects, and though only two remain (Gallica, elect of the Divine Present, and Rye, elect of the divine Space), they are led by Dahlia, who serves as both Apokine and Glorious Princept. Millennium Break: Terrorists, thieves, and revolutionaries. Founded on the moon of Partizan in 1423-1424 PM. A wrench in the wheel, a fly in the ointment. Critical in pushing the Principality into chaos. Now spreading dissidence through the galaxy. Their manifesto, such as it is, is thus:  We will help those displaced by the war. We will claim supplies only when it adds losses to the ledgers of the unjust. Free and fair elections will be held every two years. Burn thrones, build tables. When we provide for ourselves, we can provide for others. We will not turn our back on allies in need. If we must play their game, make sure to bloody their noses. When we reach the edge, we will Leap. Look sick as shit.  The words of children. Persons Veronique (she/they): Elect of Fealty. A loyalist. A protector. A runner, in a previous life. Fealty (any, they/them): A Curtain Divine of glittering chrome and sculpture. Cynosure Whitestar-Kesh (he/him): “The Peaceful Princept,” supposed leader of the Curtain of Divinity. Growing, ever so slowly, into the title. Pressure Cove (they/them): Captain of the Fox in the Snow and leader of a group infatuated with Fealty and their promised way of life. Gucci Garantine (she/her): Once, when she operated the revolutionary group HORIZON, true heir of the Rapid Evening, she called herself Saint Dawn. Now she simply calls herself one of the MIllennium Break's commanders, albeit through gritted teeth. Conviction (she/her) & Amaryllis (they/them): Conviction is among the proudest of all Kesh Divines, a caped, golden, horse-knight who speaks with absolute confidence. Their elect, Amaryllis, spent years in the shadow of Veronique, their junior in all things. Until now, of course. Fortitude (it/its) & Acacia (they/them): A Divine from an era before my own, and in that way at least, a curiosity. It spreads its strength across many military units. As always, its need for an Elect is a disappointment. Locations The Skarnoc Debris Fields: The remnants of a battle from the era before the Twilight Mirage, where the Rapid Evening fought and lost the Divine Nobility. Besides the normal ship debris, the field has gathered strange crystalline spires. Articles A Dash of Purple: Fealty, of course, knew what it was at once. How could they not? Hollows & Hallows: Mechanized military vessels, often in humanoid shape. The latter are enhanced by the touch of a Divine.  Miscellany The Perennial Wave: Perennial is something like a god, or at least I think she imagines she is. Her wave is her arrogant whim, made manifest. Functionally infinite nano-particles, spread throughout the galaxy, hampering all technology except (curiously) Divines.  Kalmeria Particle: A so-called miracle of modern science, providing those that master it power akin to what was wielded before the Perennial Wave. Like most miracles, there is an explanation, but most people have neither the knowledge of nor interest in what it really is or where it came from. Some know that it is named for the rogue engineer Kal'Mera Broun, but few know that it is the result not only of their research into the divine Asepsis, but also the particular consequences of Millennium Break's battle with Motion and her siphoning of so-called “Autonomy Itself.”  Hosted by Austin Walker (@austin_walker) Featuring Art Martinez-Tebbel (@atebbel) and Jack de Quidt (@notquitereal) Produced by Ali Acampora (@ali_west) Music by Jack de Quidt (available on bandcamp) Text by Austin Walker Cover Art by Craig Sheldon (@shoddyrobot)

This episode carries content warnings for violence, abduction, and risk of suffocation.  Welcome to the Road to PALISADE, an interlude connecting PARTIZAN to PALISADE, our upcoming season (which will be played in Armour Astir: Advent by Briar Sovereign)!  Unlike 2019's Road to PARTIZAN, please know that this season will likely contain broad spoilers for COUNTER/Weight, Twilight Mirage, and COUNTER/Weight. In many ways, we see both the Road to PALISADE and PALISADE itself as opportunities to weave many important threads from the Divine Cycle together. Another way in which this interlude season is different from the Road to PARTIZAN is that we aren't necessarily telling a linear history from point A to point B. While many key points on the five years separating the two seasons will be hit, the Road to PALISADE is intended to be less of a direct history and more of a series of snapshots, capturing events happening as the Principality's civil war continues.  As a fun note, all of the stories we play this interlude season are generally inspired by the cast's answers to Crunchyroll writer Adam Wescott's question about what sort of PZN spinoff we'd all want to do! There are (thus far) two exceptions, and this episode is the first of those. When I first read Tyler Crumrine's HOUNDs, I knew instantly that this was how I wanted to kick things off. And as you'll see, Jack and Art proved that it was the right decision.  Okay, given how long this particular Road is going to be—it's still in production as this first episode hits the main feed—I better shut up and let you get on with listening. Sierra (they/her): The bashful intelligence which pilots the agrivessel the Hen and Chicks. Gucci Garantine (she/her): Once, when she operated the revolutionary group HORIZON, true heir of the Rapid Evening, she called herself Saint Dawn. Now she simply calls herself one of the MIllennium Break's commanders, albeit through gritted teeth. Fortitude (it/its) & Acacia (they/them): A Divine from an era before my own, and in that way at least, a curiosity. It spreads its strength across many military units. As always, its need for an Elect is a disappointment. Layer Luxurious (he/him): A "podcaster." What a waste. The Treaty of Permanent Peace: An agreement of terms and conventions between the Curtain and the Pact, negotiated by the Elect Rye and the Peaceful Princept. By all accounts, this was the first great achievement of the latter. Without the safeties, guidelines, and structure provided by the Treaty, the less technologically advanced Curtain would have lost the war within the first two years of its start, with countless civilians left dead across core Curtain worlds.  Miscellany The Perennial Wave: Perennial is something like a god, or at least I think she imagines she is. Her wave is her arrogant whim, made manifest. Functionally infinite nano-particles, spread throughout the galaxy, hampering all technology except (curiously) Divines.  Kalmeria Particle: Most people don't know what it really is, or where it came from. Some know that it is named for the rogue engineer Kal'Mera Broun, but phew know that it is the result not only of their research into the divine Asepsis, but also the particular consequences of Millennium Break's battle with Motion and her siphoning of so-called “Autonomy Itself.” Hosted by Austin Walker (@austin_walker) Featuring Art Martinez-Tebbel (@atebbel) and Jack de Quidt Produced by Ali Acampora (@ali_west) Music by Jack de Quidt (available on bandcamp) Text by Austin Walker Cover Art by Craig Sheldon (@shoddyrobot)
