Avian flu is on the rise again and this summer increase in cases is being linked with seabirds. New stricter biosecurity rules have been introduced for shoots in England after a number of outbreaks in game birds, and there are also more coastal cases of the disease. Bird flu is usually associated with the winter and migratory birds, but seabirds were very badly hit in 2022 and researchers say the H5N1 virus is again affecting them. A consortium of UK scientific organisations form FluMap which is studying bird flu. We speak to Dr Tom Peacock from the Pirbright Institute who says gulls are currently spreading the virus. It's peak salad season and we visit a producer who uses state-of-the-art technology to grow lettuce under glass using aeroponics. The plant's roots are grown in the air, and the nutrients they need are delivered in a vapour which itself is created using ultrasonics, or sound waves. The cider apple harvest has started early in some orchards. Most apples are picked in the autumn and even varieties which ripen early aren't usually ready yet but as we've been reporting this year many harvests have been earlier than usual. We find out what this year's apple harvest's looking like.Farmers are still dealing with the aftermath of Scotland's biggest ever wildfires. In June and July this year more than 29,000 acres of land in the Highlands were affected by fire - with firefighters joined by gamekeepers, farmers and local communities to tackle them. The damage has been described as 'devastating'. We hear from a couple who may have to sell some of their livestock if they can't find alternative grazing soon.Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney

Welcome back to the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast.Today's episode dives into what the future of fund administration could look like with a tech-forward approach and the application of AI.We sat down with Juniper Square CEO and Co-Founder Alex Robinson to discuss how and why they've built a digital first fund administrator for private markets, starting with real estate and since expanding into other asset classes.Fresh off of a $130M Series D fundraise led by Ribbit Capital, Juniper Square has expanded globally, into fund administration through its acquisition of Forstone, and has launched JunieAI to bring AI to fund administration.Alex and I had a fascinating conversation. We discussed:Why Alex started Juniper Square and how his two entrepreneurial endeavors has informed how he's built the firm. The problem Alex set out to solve by building Juniper Square. After dealing with FedEx's to make investments, how he set out to build an investor experience that was digital. How AI will impact fund admin. Why every GP should have an AI agent according to Alex. Why Juniper Square decided to move from a technology firm to add fund administration capabilities in house.Does AI benefit larger firms or smaller firms more? Thanks Alex for coming on the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast to share your expertise and wisdom on fund administration and AI.A word from AGM podcast sponsor, Juniper SquareWhen was the last time things were easy for GPs?Fundraising remains challenging, providing liquidity to investors is even harder—and broadly speaking, most GPs are underwater operationally. It's not about to get easier, either. Especially for managers vying for capital from the wealth channel. Sure, there's increased demand from HNW and UNHW investors to gain private markets exposure…but managing their expectations for the investing experience is a whole different ballgame.Reams of paper and a new KYC process every single time they subscribe to a fund? 90 Miles From Needles with Chris Clarke and Alicia Pike

Episode Summary: In this chapter of the landmark 100th episode of the "90 Miles from Needles" podcast, journalist David Morales, known for his insightful "Three Sonorans" newsletter, joins the discussion to unravel the complexities behind this development and how a community united to challenge a potentially devastating project. The episode highlights how Project Blue, backed by Amazon Web Services, planned to establish a massive data center in Tucson, Arizona. This project raised alarm due to its anticipated consumption of scarce desert resources, including water and energy. Community activists scrutinized the implications of this center, revealing its environmental impact and the economic motivations linked to enticing tax exemptions. Morales passionately articulates the broader significance of this victory and how it exemplifies a stand against exploitative initiatives pushing the limits of desert environments. The episode educates listeners on the historical connections of resource extraction in Arizona, the racial aspects of environmental degradation, and the importance of thoughtful modern policies that respect both indigenous heritage and future sustainability. With phrases like "manifest destiny" still ringing true in new forms today, this episode serves as an inspiring example of local advocacy effecting meaningful change. Key Takeaways: Project Blue's proposed data center in Tucson faced significant opposition due to excessive water and energy demands in a desert region. The initiative exemplifies environmental racism and reflects historical patterns of extraction and exploitation in Arizona. Community activism was pivotal in stopping the project, showing the power of collective action in confronting large corporations like Amazon. Kevin Dahl, a Tucson City Council member, took a hard oppositional stance that contributed to the council's unanimous decision to halt the project. The "Three Sonorans" newsletter provides valuable insights into indigenous and progressive perspectives on environmental issues in Tucson. Notable Quotes: "Now's your chance today. Stopping Project Blue is your way of stopping manifest destiny today.""It's all connected because you have energy, you have coal, you have water.""You have to know the history. You have to know all of it together.""They were trying to build this out here because our last governor passed this bill in 2013 to give huge tax incentives to data centers."

Sam and Alicia discuss what's been key to that success, including the chain's smart kitchen technology that has improved speed and accuracy at the brand.
