In this episode, we’re chatting about Science Disrupt 2.0 - what we mean when we talk about ‘disruption’, what deeper conversations we now need to have about science, and how and why our own ideas have evolved over the last 4 years. We talk about what’s changed in science since 2016, including the more open nature of critical conversation in academia; how the cult of personality (of consultants, startups and VCs) can make a mockery of science and tech, and what deeper questions aren’t being asked while many still problematic practices continue in research and tech transfer.

I'm excited today to say that we have a guest on the show - Gemma Milne, who has written a book, Smoke and Mirrors, about how technological hype distorts the future. I really enjoyed the book, which deals with nine areas of considerable hype in technology, and not only takes you through some of the fascinating near-term applications for these technologies but also grounds them in reality. It was a fascinating conversation that I'm glad to be able to present you with.  You can find more of her work on Twitter @gemmamilne or on her website at www.gemmamilne.co.uk and you can listen to the newly relaunched Science:Disrupt podcast, which has a recent episode about science communication in the age of coronavirus, which is obviously extremely topical. As for us, you can find the show at physicspodcast.com where you'll find all of our past episodes and a contact form. You can send any questions, comments, concerns, episode ideas, people you'd like me to interview that way - it always makes my day to get communication from you guys so do send it over. You can follow us on the web @physicspod or the Facebook page, Physical Attraction. There's also a Patreon which I really need to use more which you can donate to, and a paypal link for one-off donations if you want to support what I do; we are and remain totally independent and solo, a passion project for me, and anything you can do to support us from telling your friends to listen to the show, to reviewing the show on various platforms, to sending us advice or encouragement, is all greatly appreciated. We have some more interviews in the pipeline for you that will be out soon. Our theme music is by melodysheep and used with kind permission. Until next time, then, take care.

In This Episode:    Gemma Milne is a Scottish creative science nerd obsessed with deep tech and good writing.    She writes about science, tech and the broad cultural issues surrounding anything that comes out of science labs and into the real world.    Gemma is also a science startup advisor - scouting them for funds, and helping them tell their stories. And she's Co-Founder of Science: Disrupt, a media org connecting and showcasing those innovators, iconoclasts and entrepreneurs creating change in science.   She's an engaging public speaker, a published author, and self-made journalist. Today she shares how she landed a book deal with one of the biggest publishing houses in the world, how she became an in-demand public speaker and journalist without any formal training, and how you can credentialize yourself in any skill you're pursuing.    Episode Highlights   How Gemma shifted into writing from the (very different) world of science and tech  The reality of landing a book deal with a major publishing house How Gemma professionalizes her skills and became widely known as an expert without any formal training Her terrible book idea that got her laughed out of her agent's office How to choose your battles when your editor starts cutting your work Why you should always push back if a client asks you to write about something you don't believe in How she monetizes her books and leverages them in the rest of her business The fastest way to add public speaking to your repertoire (even if you have zero experience) Her advice for changing your positioning or branding when you want to pursue something new  Why freelancing isn't for everyone (and why that's not a bad thing)

This episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Gemma Milne, a science and technology writer whose book, Smoke & Mirrors: How Hype Obscures the Future and How to See Past It, just recently came out. Her work explores science, tech and the broad cultural issues surrounding their advancements, and she has a particular interest in deep tech, including biotech, agriculture, energy, space, health, quantum computing, AI. Gemma is also a deep tech advisor to governments, investors and other organisations working in these spaces, and she's the Co-Founder of Science: Disrupt, a media organisation that connects and showcases innovators and entrepreneurs creating change in science. In this rich conversation, we talk about everything from hype, advertising and fake news, to simplified narratives and emotion-laden messaging, and how all of these things can influence our perception of the world and the situations around us. We explore why there's such a great need for robust critical thinking, especially in this moment, and why it might serve us better not to think so much in terms of fixing broken systems, but assessing them according to the values on which they were built, so that we might more consciously choose the values on which to redesign them. My guest today is Gemma Milne, the science/tech writer and author of Smoke & Mirrors: How Hype Obscures the Future and How to See Past It . Her works have been featured in the BBC, The Times and she is the co-founder of Science: Disrupt – a media outlet covering advances in science startups, research processes and industries such as space, energy, health and advanced computing. She works with the World Economic Forum as one of their Global Shapers, and is also an advisor to the European Commission and Innovate UK, helping them decide which scientific innovations should be funded with government money. So she's pretty impressive basically. Her book is all about the smoke and mirrors of many different industries, and how we can spot 'hype' and 'illusions' especially online. The book encourages critical thinking, the nuance of conversations and why we should be taught to scrutinise things more. I found her book and this conversation super interesting, hope you do too! xo See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
