Scot and Jeff discuss Deep Purple with Ivan Pongracic. Introducing the Band: Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by guest Ivan Pongracic, William E. Hibbs & Ludwig von Mises professor of Economics at Hillsdale College. Ivan has a career nearly as storied as Deep Purple's -- a 1984 immigrant from the former Yugoslavia (Croatia, specifically), an accomplished professional surf guitarist, and now economics professor at Hillsdale. Ivan's Music Pick: Deep Purple Get your jackhammers out boys, it's time to carve the story of rock into a mountainside. Yes, Deep Purple went through many evolutions during their career (which still persists to this day), but what they will forever be synonymous with -- in the best possible way -- is bone-crunching, riff-driven hard rock. The gang -- Ivan and Jeff especially -- argue that Deep Purple was in fact the platonic ideal of whatever it is we've come to apply the broad label of “hard rock” to over the past half-century: compulsively driven, secretly smart music that combined steady beats and metallic shredding with formal (and often British-inspired) commitment to structure and hooks. Deep Purple may have gone through a goofy -- and shockingly interesting -- embryonic phase as Vanilla Fudge-like pop crooners, but when they finally emerged with Deep Purple in Rock (1970) they created a template that legions of bands would slavishly dedicate themselves to imitating (not least of all Spinal Tap, whose story is largely theirs, remixed). You know them from “Smoke on the Water.” Maybe you've heard that song about space truckin' ‘round the stars. What we're here to prove to you today is that Deep Purple is so much more than what you might have casually heard. In their unpretentious, hard-driving way, they provided the matrix of countless bands that followed after them, and all for the better. Click play and become the speed king you always wanted to be. Episode 326: Smoke & Mirrors: Learning to See Clearly in the Wellness WorldPodcast: The Thrive Forever Fit ShowHost: Jay NixonThere is no shortage of health information today. But there is a shortage of clarity. In this episode, Jay pulls back the curtain on the smoke and mirrors that dominate both the wellness industry and modern medicine and explains why so many well-intentioned people feel confused, overwhelmed, and stuck despite “doing everything right.”This is not an anti-medicine conversation. And it's not fear-based.It's an honest look at how large systems simplify messaging, manage symptoms, and sell solutions at scale and why those systems are not designed to create long-term metabolic health. If you've ever felt like health advice keeps changing, trends keep cycling, and no one is telling the full story, this episode will connect the dots. Why changing nutrition guidelines rarely change behaviorHow wellness trends create activity without progressThe difference between information and understandingWhy modern medicine excels at acute care but struggles with chronic healthHow medications can mute symptoms without resolving root causesWhy pharmaceutical marketing creates a false sense of safetyThe hidden cost of unquestioned long-term medication useHow to separate signal from smoke in health decisionsWhy metabolic ownership starts with education, not fearUpdated food pyramid and dietary guidelinesWhy health-conscious people already knew the flawsWhy the people who need guidance most are rarely impactedWellness trends and biohacking cultureWhy more tools have not led to better population healthHow context matters more than tacticsOmeprazole and long-term medication useWhy relief is not the same as resolutionWhat patients are rarely told about long-term trade-offsHow symptom suppression can delay real solutionsInformation alone does not create healthRelief does not equal healingApproved does not always mean optimalMedicine is powerful but incompleteHealth requires context, systems thinking, and ownershipClarity reduces harmAsking better questions changes outcomesAnyone confused by conflicting health advicePeople relying on medications without understanding long-term implicationsThose frustrated by wellness trends that don't move the needleAnyone ready to stop outsourcing their health decisionsPeople seeking clarity instead of noiseMost people are not careless with their health. They are simply never taught how to filter information, question assumptions, or understand systems. This episode explains why having a place to learn, ask questions, and think critically about health decisions matters and why long-term metabolic health requires more than headlines, commercials, or trends.Healthy people don't need more information. They need better filters. When you can see through the smoke, you can finally move toward real, sustainable health.

Garth Heckman The David Alliance TDAgiantSlayer@Gmail.com Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so is the lazy one to those who send him.”** – Proverbs 10:26 (NASB) When Laziness Becomes a Liability*** Most of us have experienced irritation that lingers: – Smoke burning your eyes – Sour vinegar shocking your teeth Solomon compares laziness to these two deeply uncomfortable sensations. This is not mild annoyance. This is painful frustration. God is showing us that laziness doesn't just hurt the lazy person — **it hurts everyone connected to them. The lazy Dad hurts his wife, his kids, his boss and his own psyche… Laziness is not a personal weakness — it is a communal burden. 1. The Cultural Meaning of Vinegar and Smoke** Vinegar to the Teeth In the ancient world, vinegar was cheap, acidic wine. If you expected refreshing grape juice and received sour vinegar instead, your mouth would recoil. It shocks. It irritates. It disappoints. Smoke to the Eyes Smoke was a daily irritation in ancient homes. Cooking fires filled small houses, burning eyes, blurring vision, causing tears and coughing. Smoke disorients. Smoke blinds. Smoke frustrates. together, these metaphors paint a picture: Laziness creates irritation, disappointment, confusion, and emotional strain. 2. The Problem Isn't Slowness — It's Unfaithfulness** The proverb says: “So is the lazy one **to those who send him.” This isn't about personal motivation. This is about assignment, responsibility, and trust. The lazy person: * Was sent with a purpose * Was trusted with a task * Was expected to deliver But instead: * They delay * They deflect * They disappoint They act drained… but its only those around them that are truly drained due to their behavior. Biblical Insight: Laziness is not neutral. It is unfaithfulness with delegated authority. - ITS DOING NOTHING AT ALL THE WHILE GIVEN THE POWER AND THE PRIVILEGE TO DO IT. Jesus echoed this principle in **Matthew 25 (Parable of the Talents)** — the servant who buried his responsibility was not rebuked for inability, but for slothfulness and fear.

EPISODE 676 - Jennifer Celeste Briggs - Watching Sarah Rise - A Journey of Thriving With AutismJennifer Celeste Briggs has a BA in English Literature from Swarthmore college. She lives in Pittsburgh, PA with her husband and two daughters. Her daughter Sarah has a genetic anomaly and autism. When Sarah was four, Jenny decided to run a Son-Rise Program for her, calling it Sarah-Rise, and training at the Autism Treatment Center of America. The Son-Rise Program is a loving child-centered approach to helping those with autism and other challenges connect socially, verbally, and through increased eye contact. Organizing hundreds of hours of therapeutic play time for Sarah, Jenny trained and coordinated multiple volunteers who contributed their love and creativity to the venture. Jenny started a blog to share the experience of Sarah-Rise and has heard multiple times that her words were helpful to others dealing with life struggles. Jenny wants to help parents feel understood and to spread the word about The Son-Rise Program. She hopes that her words bring comfort, joy, and inspiration to readers whatever their challenges and journeys may be.Sarah is a feisty and determined four-year-old with autism and a unique genetic blueprint. Her mom Jenny is equally feisty and determined, which leads to clashes and strife but also leads to phenomenal connection and progress as Jenny runs a Son-Rise Program for her, calling it Sarah-Rise.The Son-Rise Program is an approach to working with people with autism to foster social connection. It provides intensely loving, focused one-on-one therapeutic play time, meeting Sarah where she is and never stopping her repetitive behaviors. Sarah's language explodes, her eye contact intensifies, she plays games, plays imaginatively, uses the potty, eats healthily, reads, and writes.Playing with Sarah is deeply rewarding for the volunteers who spend time in the Sarah-Rise room. While Jenny sometimes doubts herself and criticizes her parenting, she also explores new pathways to gentleness, joy, and laughter. She celebrates Sarah's successes, marveling at the depth of love and creativity that her volunteers bring to the scene and stretching her own creative self. Accompany Jenny from Sarah's birth through the decision to run Sarah-Rise, and follow the years of Sarah-Rise, pretending that markers are flowers and number flashcards are snowflakes. Taylor had experienced unexplained things before—small moments she'd learned to live with rather than question. But one night, while alone in her apartment, something happened that didn't fit into anything she'd experienced before. She woke to find the room filled with red smoke, the color of clay soil, moving slowly through the space. It circled the bed, close enough to notice, quiet enough not to announce itself. It didn't feel dark or aggressive. It simply felt present. At the time, she didn't know what to call it. She didn't know if it belonged to a dream, a waking state, or something in between. And for years, she assumed she was alone in having seen it.It wasn't until much later—while listening to others share their experiences—that she realized someone else had seen the same thing.
