More than 2,500,000 acres have burned so far during Oregon’s record-breaking wildfire season. Earlier this summer, smoke from the wildfires led to air quality advisories being issued across most of the state, including in Southern Oregon.    John D. Sutter, an independent climate journalist and assistant professor of environmental media at the University of Oregon, traveled to the region in July for a reporting assignment for The Guardian. He headed to Josephine County, which was tied with Trinity County in California for the highest number of deaths linked to wildfire smoke during a 15-year period ending in 2020, according to a study published last year in the journal Nature.    Sutter spent a week hearing from dozens of residents in places like Cave Junction and Grants Pass, from frontline healthcare workers to medically vulnerable seniors and business owners. Sutter joins us to share some of those perspectives and the toll worsening wildfire smoke is taking on the tight-knit communities he visited and wrote about in his recently published story.

On this episode we talk with Daniel Vaughn about his journey from architect and barbecue blogger to one of the most respected barbecue journalists in the country, his travels in pursuit of great barbecue, and the people and traditions that make American barbecue such a fascinating part of our culture. Doug Sisk is a former Major League Baseball pitcher who spent nine seasons in the big leagues, most notably as a member of the New York Mets' pitching staff during their unforgettable 1986 World Series championship season. A right-handed reliever known for his sinking fastball, Sisk was particularly effective at keeping the ball in the ballpark—he surrendered just 15 home runs in more than 500 innings during his Major League career. A native of Washington state, Doug attended Green River Community College and Washington State University before signing with the Mets as an amateur free agent in 1980. He made his Major League debut with New York in 1982 and went on to pitch for the Mets, Baltimore Orioles and Atlanta Braves. His career totals include a 22-20 record, 3.27 ERA, 33 saves and 523⅓ innings pitched. Doug was an important member of the 1986 Mets, appearing in 41 games during the championship season. He also pitched in the World Series, helping the Mets capture one of the most memorable championships in baseball history. On this episode Doug Sisk takes us back to his playing days, his journey to the Major Leagues, and his experiences with the 1986 New York Mets. What would you do if somebody sent you a photo — and the exact location — of a 200-inch whitetail? On Episode 339 of the Chasing Giants Podcast, Don Higgins and Terry Peer dive back into one of the most debated subjects in hunting: the difference between what is legal and what is ethical. After last week's discussion generated more than 100 comments, Don explains why hunting ethics have to go beyond simply asking whether something is legal. That conversation leads directly back into thermal drones — including the story of a hunter who spent $10,000 on a thermal drone, used it for only a few months, and then sold it because he believed the technology crossed an ethical line. Then Don addresses controversy surrounding a recent Whitetail Master Academy clip about receiving tips on giant bucks. Don explains exactly what happens when somebody sends him information about a big deer, why most tips never make it beyond his computer, and why he has walked away from opportunities to hunt tremendous bucks when doing so would step on another hunter's toes. Pallavi first arrived in Beijing in 2002 to teach at the Beijing Broadcasting Institute and went on to spend the better part of a decade as The Hindu's China correspondent — for much of that time, the only Chinese-speaking Indian foreign correspondent in the country. That period produced Smoke and Mirrors: An Experience of China, still one of the very few sustained attempts to look at China through Indian eyes. After 16 years away — years spent in Brussels, Jakarta, Tokyo, and Madrid — she's back in Beijing, and turning her gaze inward with her latest book, Travels in the Other Place: Pursuing the Self in Eight Acts.
