“I Love My Husband. I Also Love My Boyfriend.” How an Open Marriage Really Works

What really happens when you open up your marriage? This week on No Filter, Kate Langbroek sits down with writer Deepa Paul, whose book Ask Me How It Works chronicles the decade she has spent in an open marriage with her husband, Marcus. While the conversation around open relationships has been everywhere lately, Deepa’s story offers a different perspective. For her, non-monogamy didn’t break her marriage. It reshaped it. Deepa was raised in the Philippines, where divorce is still illegal and the expectation for women is clear: marry once, stay devoted, stay desirable, stay monogamous. But after moving to Amsterdam with her husband, Deepa discovered a version of herself she’d never had permission to explore. One that included desire, autonomy, and eventually, a boyfriend she also loves deeply. In this candid conversation, Deepa answers the questions so many people have about open marriage but rarely ask out loud:How does it work? How do you handle jealousy? What happens when one partner gets more attention? How do you parent inside a non-traditional structure? And what do you do when you fall in love with someone else? You can follow Deepa Paul here. How do you find hope when life unexpectedly thrusts you into the valley of loss? How do you navigate the rugged terrain of pain? For Nothing is Wasted's Podcast Producer and Content Director, Catherine Fitzgerald, the heartbreak and trauma of losing her brother, Zac, plunged her into a valley unlike anything she had ever experienced. In the aftermath came secondary losses of community and identity and a spiritual desolation that felt like a dark night of the soul. She found herself wondering how she would ever find her way back to faith. And yet, God met her there—through the book of Psalms and through the stories of others, like Davey Blackburn—offering a glimmer of light to guide her toward hope. Now, in Nothing is Wasted's latest project, Catherine has gathered and edited a collection of stories from past podcast guests, Nothing is Wasted Coaches, and team members. Each story weaves together personal journeys through pain, loss, and trauma with reflections on the Psalms, forming a powerful new devotional—Hope in the Valley: 42 Days of Healing Through the Psalms After Loss, Grief, and Tragedy. In this episode, Davey and Catherine look back on their own stories and their shared journey through Nothing is Wasted. Together, they explore how loss reshapes every part of our lives, the often messy wrestle for hope, and why stories are such a vital part of nurturing faith in the valley of pain.If you've ever believed that hope simply means “looking on the bright side,” this conversation will remind you that true hope is far more complex—gritty, raw, and worth fighting for. And often, it's the stories of others that become our most powerful weapon in that fight. And now, they're back with new valves, pacemakers, and high-margin cardiac devices. Domestic players, meanwhile, grew fast but still struggle with data, technology, and trust. Hello, listeners, and welcome back to First Principles, Episode 48, or the 7th episode of season 3. This is part 2 of the conversation. The host, Rohin Dharmakumar, first crossed paths with Deepak Abbot back in April 2015, even before The Ken had been founded. Rohin was chasing down an insightful breakdown of the tech ecosystem's huge user numbers during the Free Basics debate, and Deepak, a veteran operator and former product head at Paytm, was the go-to source for his data-filled, analytical posts. That same data-driven curiosity is what led Deepak to walk away from corporate life in 2019. He was clear: he didn't want to just manage; he had years left to actively "build products, you know, with my own hands". What he built was Indiagold, targeting the massive opportunity of gold in a market VCs often dismissed as an 'old economy product'.In this episode, Rohin sat down with Deepak Abbot, co-founder of Indiagold, to discuss how they are transforming India's massive $1.5 trillion gold reserve—an asset often locked away and doing nothing—into a productive force. Deepak calls this gold a "dead asset" and explains that Indiagold's mission is to change the mindset around it. They are not just giving gold loans; they are monetising a secured asset for the 250 million Indians who are excluded from formal credit due to thin or non-existent credit scores. By enabling customers to safely leverage their gold reserve, the company helps jumpstart a formal credit history and provides essential working capital.Listen in as Deepak charts his operator-to-founder journey, shares how he navigated initial VC skepticism, and details the strategy behind turning a seemingly archaic commodity into a modern fintech solution for one of India's most fundamental credit problems. Plus, a fascinating look inside a unique company culture, including why Indiagold operates without a CEO.*****This episode was mixed and mastered by Rajiv CN.Write to us at fp@the-ken.com with your feedback, suggestions, and guests you would want to see on First Principles. If you enjoyed this episode, please help us spread the word by sharing and gifting it to your friends and family.***** Join The Ken as a Podcast Producer and work with India's most ambitious storytellers! When she opened her first bra as a teenager—a plain white cotton thing inside a plastic egg—she was deeply disappointed. That moment, she says, is where it all began. If the world wouldn’t make things beautiful, she would. In this conversation, Dita opens up about the art and discipline behind the spectacle that made her a global icon. She talks about her early days as a model and Playboy cover star, the power and intention behind creating the Dita Von Teese persona, and how she’s kept mystery alive in a world prone to oversharing. She also shares what it was like collaborating with Taylor Swift on Bejeweled and how rare it is, even now, to be approached by another artist with such genuine respect for her craft. Dita explains that while many have imitated her, Taylor came to her as a true collaborator. It was more than a milestone. After a single policy change, foreign universities are rushing to claim their place in India's higher-education market. States are competing to host them, and universities are chasing new revenue abroad. Everyone seems to be winning. But beneath the glossy partnerships and big promises, what does this experiment really mean for students? And what happens when a “foreign degree” no longer means going abroad?Tune in.Daybreak is produced from the newsroom of The Ken, India's first subscriber-only business news platform. He was born Jason DeFord in Nashville, Tennessee. By the time he was a teenager, he was in and out of jail, surrounded by addiction, violence, and survival. He thought his life would end the same way it began: in chaos. But somewhere inside those walls, he started writing lyrics and dreaming about music. Today, the world knows him as Jelly Roll, one of the most unlikely success stories in country music. He has gone from a decade behind bars to the top of the Billboard charts, winning CMA Awards and earning Grammy nominations along the way. His songs are raw, confessional, and painfully honest. They are about addiction, faith, shame, forgiveness, and the long, slow road to redemption. In this deeply moving conversation with Kate Langbroek, recorded backstage at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney minutes before he hit the stage, Jelly Roll went deep about how he turned his pain into purpose. He shares the stories of the people who saved him, including his wife, Bunnie XO, and his children. He opens up about his years in prison, his mother’s struggles, his faith, and the moment he learned that forgiveness starts with yourself. It is the story of a man who refused to give up on himself, even when the world had. A boy who became a better man, a husband, a father, and one of the most honest voices in country music today. Across India, lenders like HDFC and Kotak are repurposing the same algorithms that once judged credit risk to run hyper-personalised marketing campaigns. These systems now predict who's ready for a credit card, or insurance plan by studying every transaction, payment, and habit — turning customer data into personalised sales pitches. The RBI has drawn clear lines for how AI can be used in lending. But when it comes to marketing, the rules are still fuzzy. That leaves space for India's biggest banks to experiment—and for AI to quietly reshape how finance sells itself.Tune in.Daybreak is produced from the newsroom of The Ken, India's first subscriber-only business news platform. Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with JulieAnn Bornales, Creative Operations & Marketing Consultant, and Podcast Producer. She highlights the lessons learned from career setbacks, finding your voice in challenging environments, and the importance of asking for what you're worth.   In today's episode, we discuss: Don't overlook the power of self-belief when facing challenges or workplace uncertainty. Trusting in your ability to solve problems encourages you to keep going through setbacks, helping you recover faster and reach your goals. Know your worth and stand firm in negotiating it, even if it feels uncomfortable initially. Advocating for yourself early in your career can lead to better pay and opportunities later, so get used to asking for more, even if you're eager just to get your foot in the door. Be bold and reach out to people or platforms outside your comfort zone. Sometimes the simplest act of curiosity, like sending an email or asking a question, can lead to big opportunities, so never underestimate the power of taking that next small step. Explore passions and hobbies outside your job to boost creativity and emotional resilience. Participating in activities you enjoy, like baking or theater, can decrease stress and help you bring fresh energy and new ideas back to your main pursuits.   RESOURCES: Master's Thesis  Imagery implications of MTV : teen pop, adolescent girls, and sex role behaviors: https://scholarworks.sjsu.edu/etd_theses/3364/   Guest Bio A native of Northern California, JulieAnn received a double undergraduate degree in Sociology - Organizational Studies and Communications from the University of California at Davis and earned her Master's Degree in Mass Communications, writing her thesis on MTV, music videos, and gender identity at San Jose State University.  A music industry veteran of over 15 years, she spent the majority of her career at Warner Music Group, contributing across sales, marketing, digital strategy, and creative development—driving cross-functional initiatives that supported both artist growth and brand innovation.  She was a key contributor to the launch of Warner Music Group's first FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television) channels, helping to program the company's expansion into this rapidly growing digital media space.  She also played a central role in unifying podcasting initiatives across international markets and served as producer of the award-winning, Chartable-ranked series Totally 80's: The Podcast.  A proud alumnus of the Atlantic Theater Acting School in New York City, JulieAnn has also appeared in Off-Broadway productions, web-series and short films. There’s one thing you definitely know about Elizabeth Gilbert. She wrote Eat Pray Love - a book that became a global phenomenon, a movie, and a blueprint for millions of women seeking transformation. It made Liz one of the most famous writers in the world. But behind that fame was a deeper story - one Liz never told. Until now. In her new memoir, All the Way to the River, Elizabeth Gilbert tells the truth about the love of her life, her best friend-turned-partner, the late Rayya Elias. It’s a story that’s fierce, complicated, and far from the romantic ideal many people projected onto them. It’s also about Liz’s own descent into addiction; not to drugs or alcohol, but to sex and love. “I am a sex and love addict,” she writes. “I have caused tremendous harm to myself and others.” In this brutally honest conversation, Liz opens up to Holly about the darkest chapters of her life; the chaos of living with a partner relapsing into addiction, the shame of her own destructive patterns, and the moment she contemplated something unthinkable. But this is also a story about healing, truth, and grace. About the kind of honesty that can save your life. And about what happens when you stop running, and finally let yourself be seen. This is Elizabeth Gilbert like you’ve never heard her before: Unfiltered. Grieving. Funny. Fierce. And ready to tell the whole truth. She speaks about growing up in the shadow of losing her mother, her shy first attempts at romance, the highs and lows of talk show success, and the very public feuds that made headlines. It's easy to get caught up in the podcasting grind—churning out episodes, tweaking gear, tracking downloads—only to wonder if any of it's actually moving the needle. For a lot of entrepreneurs, it becomes just another thing on the to-do list instead of something that drives real connections. The frustrating part is knowing your message has value, but feeling like it's just floating out there with no direction. What's often missing isn't content—it's clarity on what you really want it to do for you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G27RM8Uxy_w John Corcoran is a former lawyer turned podcasting strategist and co-founder of Rise25, helping B2B companies use podcasts to grow their client base. With experience writing speeches at the White House and hosting 2,000+ interviews, he's built a career on connection. Today, he explains how podcasts can drive real business growth by building relationships, not just content. He shares his “Dream 200” method—targeting ideal guests who can become clients or key partners. His focus: use podcasting as a smart, strategic networking tool. Stay tuned! Quotes: “If someone held a gun to my head and said, ‘Your website or your podcast?' I would say, ‘Take my website.' I will keep my podcast, because a website is basically a glossy brochure on the internet, and the podcast is a tool for building relationships.” “Business is about who you know. A podcast is a tool for knowing more people, knowing them in a deeper way—getting to know people you don't know right now, who are busy, who are successful, and who aren't going to carve out time for a get-to-know-you call, but will spend time for a podcast.” “In an era where we can't tell what is real from what is fake, authenticity will be the new currency.” Resources:  john@rise25.com The Rise25 ‘Dream 200' strategy connects you to your ideal clients.
