One of the most vocal objectors to a planned data centre on the outskirts of Ennis is accusing the company behind it of "deception" and claims the development will increase electricity prices. The High Court has cleared the way for the €1.6 billion project on the Tulla Road which it's argued would emit as much greenhouse gases each year as 500,000 people. Responding to the High Court ruling finding in Art Data Centres Limited's favour in the judicial review proceedings, its co-founders said it "recognises that there is a future for environmentally-sensitive data centre developments". They've described the project as a "responsible use of renewable energy" featuring "grid-supporting generation technology and heat-recycling for both agri-food and local heating schemes". Clare County Council granted permission for the 200-megawatt scheme comprising six data halls covering 145 acres in August 2022. This was appealed to An Coimisiún Pleanála which backed the council's decision in April 2024 and this was followed by a judicial review process, which resulted in the commission admitted it had "erred" in its initial ruling. Despite this, the remaining hurdles have now been cleared in the High Court, paving the way for the development to commence. With 1,200 jobs to be created during construction as well as a further 1,000 when operational, Ennis Fianna Fáil Councillor Pat Daly says it's welcome news. Friends of the Irish Environment claims the data centre will emit 700,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases each year which is the same as the carbon produced by 500,000 people. The developer has argued that enough surplus electricity will be generated by the scheme to heat up to 1,100 homes in the area. Ennis-based physicist Dr Colin Doyle, who objected to the development at various stages, doesn't believe this will materalise however as the required infrastructure isn't in place. He insists any suggestion the project is carbon neutral is "total nonsense" and an example of "smoke and mirrors.

This year Rheannon is new to the candy cane game. Tamara is really leaning into the mini candy canes. There is a thing of too much sugar for the kids in her life, and what really is the appropriate amount of sugar before bed. After saying no one too many times, Tamara has bought a coin to flip instead. Now a coin will say no instead of Tamara having to say no. Rheannon thinks that she should invest in a weighted coin that always says no. Rheannon is sad that ski season is delayed, and the whole family is missing the sun at this point. The information about care for our horses is overwhelming and often conflicting. The reason is simple: accurate science with horses is impossible due to the expense. The rule for scientific study follows a simple roadmap. First, suggest a hypothesis, which is a supposition based on observation but not on facts or evidence. Then, scientists work hard to disprove the hypothesis. If they can't prove it wrong, then it must be right, and, therefore, the hypothesis becomes a theory based on fact. Several problems arise in collecting facts, such as ensuring there are enough subjects in the study and that they represent all subjects in the world. Studying engineering or mathematical questions can be done anywhere in the world, countless times, and with standard variables. However, in living things like you and your horses, too many variables exist to make the facts rock-solid in their validity. Studies on our horses require large numbers of horses to be examined over long periods, and the expense of doing so prevents good, accurate science. The results are sophistry, or smoke and mirrors. Facts are twisted to shape the theory, leading to conflicting, confusing information for the horse owner. There are only two ways for horse owners to resolve this dilemma:      - Return our care for horses to a time before human intervention, when evolution shaped their needs.      - Ask this question: Is what is being done today to our horses in their best interest, and does it support or distract from how they developed? Have those two letters shown up in just about every app you use - whether you want them to or not? Yeah. Same. These days, it seems like  you can't go an hour without hearing that Artificial Intelligence is going to radically remake our world. But… is it? There's so much hype it can be hard to really know what people even mean when they say AI. It  can't all be ChatGPT helping you with cover letters and AI-generated images of the Balenciaga Pope, can it? Dr. Timnit Gebru is one of the voices speaking loudly and honestly about AI outside of the Big Tech hype bubble. And she has the bonafides to back that up. Timnit holds a BA, Masters and a PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Vision from Stanford. Plus, She co-led Google's Ethical AI research team… until, in 2020, she and her co-lead sounded the alarm about the potential harms of large language models in a paper they titled “On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots: Can Language Models Be Too Big.”  That paper led to an abrupt end to her time at Google. But Timnit hasn't stopped working on how AI and Machine Learning can be developed in ways that serve all communities - most recently as the co-founder and Executive Director of DAIR.
