It's very common for leaders to throw training at every performance problem we see. Yet not all performance problems result from a skill gap. In fact, many are due to other factors, such as mindset or motivation. The problem with this is that performance won't change if you offer training in these cases. So, in this episode, I'm breaking down how to  determine if something is a mindset, motivation, or skill gap problem, and why this matters for successful behavior change.▶️ How to Spot a Mindset or Motivation Problem (Not a Skill One) ▶️ Key Points:0:00:00 Why training isn't always the right solution0:02:44 A quick lesson on behavior change0:05:18 Four questions to spot the root cause of a problemResources from this episode:Check out The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg.Learn more about James Clear and his book Atomic Habits.Catch up with these previous episodes if there's a lack of trust or psychological safety in your organization:Episode 151: How to Build a High-Performance Team Starting with TrustEpisode 149: Key Ingredients in a High-Performance CultureJoin the Nonprofit Learning and Development Collective: https://www.skillmastersmarket.com/nonprofit-learning-and-development-collectiveWas this episode helpful? Air Week: December 8-14, 2025 Don & Dewey Don Bowman and Dewey Terry never scored a national hit record, but together as the 1950s duo Don & Dewey, they remain one of R&B and early Rock n’ Roll’s best kept secrets. They grew up as friends in Pasadena, CA, joining fellow students at John Muir High School to form The Squires. In 1955, the group scored a local Los Angeles hit with “Sindy,” which has since become a vocal group classic, but when no follow-up hits materialized, Don & Dewey were persuaded to go off on their own by local manager John Criner. After a few sides for local labels Spot and Shade tanked, Criner sold their contract off to Art Rupe, owner of the much larger Specialty Records in LA. Rupe and his A&R man, Bumps Blackwell worked with Don (who was now known as Don Harris) & Dewey, trying to turn their frantic brand of up-tempo jump blues into something, but it never really caught on. Don & Dewey remarkably wrote most of their own material, which was not a standard practice back in the ’50s and though they couldn’t score hits with their own recordings, other artists were able to. Dale and Grace took Don & Dewey’s “I’m Leaving It All Up To You” to the top of the pop chart (#6 R&B) in ’63 and the Righteous Brothers cracked the pop chart with their version of “Justine” in ’65. The Olympics made a hit out of “Big Boy Pete” in ’60, while The Premiers entered the top 20 with “Farmer John” in ’64. This week, Matt The Cat reveals the story of one of early Rock’s craziest duos as he loads the ol’ Rockola Juke with their jumpin’, jivin’ sides on the Juke In The Back.  LISTEN BELOW

You'll learn why the right material works, how to transform inspiration into your own content, and why audio quality matters less than energy when you're trying to make fans say, "who is this band?" It's about creating cultural moments, fueling FOMO, and turning one-time listeners into repeat buyers. This is where "Always Be Performing" extends beyond the stage into every piece of marketing you share. Intuitive Communication With Animals Creates Powerful Healing

    Breathe Love & Magic

Have you dabbled in communication with animals? Even just for fun or out of curiosity? If so, you already know how surprising, heart-opening, and downright magical it can be. And if you haven't tried it yet… buckle up. The possibilities for emotional healing — plus personal and spiritual growth — are honestly astonishing. Animal Communciation That's exactly what I talked about with animal communicator Genie Joseph in this week's whimsical episode of the Breathe Love & Magic podcast. Genie brought stories, wisdom, and humor to t he show. Our conversation was a reminder that animals are so much more than companions — they're teachers, healers, guides, and sometimes even philosophers in furry bodies. The Philosophical Rabbit Genie started by sharing an enchanting story about her friend Paloma, an animal communicator in Switzerland. Paloma's rabbit, Spot, was not your average carrot-crunching cutie. He had a giant personality. According to Spot, he was a philosopher. And he had no problem telling Paloma that she simply wasn't on his level. Apparently, he’d had a few human lives. At one point he literally said, “You're not at my level. Go back and study.” Can you imagine being put down by a rabbit? Each time Paloma returned, eager to collaborate, Spot sent her back to do more inner work. Only after she'd grown spiritually and emotionally did he finally agree to partner with her on writing a book. This story cracked me up, but it also highlights something profound. Animals have rich inner worlds and unique perspectives. They're funny, wise, stubborn, intuitive, and deeply aware, often far more than we give them credit for. Wolfie Knew His Time Was Up Next came the story that changed Genie's life and honestly, it gave me chills. Her beloved cat, Wolfie, introduced her to the mystical world of animal communication. Toward the end of his life, Genie was torn about what to do. The vet suggested euthanasia, but her heart wasn't ready. She felt confused, guilty, and overwhelmed. This what people feel when you love an animal deeply and want to do right by them. In a moment of desperation and tenderness, she asked Wolfie what he wanted and to her complete surprise, he answered. Wolfie telepathically communicated that he wanted to pass peacefully at home. He provided the exact day and time he intended to leave his body which was between 3 and 5 AM. And just as he said, Wolfie passed at 3:30 AM. This experience affirmed for Genie communication with animals was real. That moment became her turning point, the doorway that led her into a life long devotion to understanding and teaching intuitive animal communication. You might think of her as a pet psychic. Everyday Wisdom from Animals Wolfie's guidance started earlier in as he helped Genie with everyday decisions, including her movie projects. If she wasn't sure which script to choose, she'd spread them out on the floor. Wolfie would quietly wander over and plop himself on the one that ended up being the best choice. He was always right. Eventually, Genie trusted him so much she referred to him as her “business partner.” Animals pick up your moods, your energy, your hesitations, andyour excitement. Sometimes they see the bigger picture long before humans do. It makes you think, how many times has your pet has been trying to tell you something, but you just didn't realize you were being guided? Healing with Animal Therapy Genie then shifted into the deeper purpose behind her work, which is emotional healing. She shared the story of Oscar, a rescued dog with scars, missing teeth, and a heartbreaking past. Yet, despite everything he'd been through, Oscar became a powerful therapy partner for soldiers suffering from PTSD. That’s because Oscar had a rare gift. He could sense the person in the room who was in the most pain. Not the loudest or the one with the biggest personality. Oscar sensed which person silently felt like they were at the end of their rope and were at the greatest risk of suicide. He'd wander over, rest his head on their lap, and stay with them until their energy softened. Time after time, he found the soldier who needed him most. Genie watched veterans open emotionally, often for the first time in years. Oscar's presence reached places that traditional therapy often couldn’t go where trauma hides. Animals don't judge. They don't push, need you to “explain.” They simply see you and comfort you. Sometimes, that's just what someone needs to begin healing. Communication with Animals One of the things Genie emphasized which I loved, is that animals have feelings and very real opinions. She shared the story of a horse who became cranky and withdrawn after being moved to a new barn. Nothing seemed physically wrong, but his behavior was off. When Genie tuned in, she discovered he was upset because he used to spend all day with his companion, a female horse and not just the evenings. He missed the 24/7 connection with her. Once his caretakers understood this, they changed his living situation and suddenly, the horse relaxed and returned to his bright, affectionate self. Sometimes the fix is emotional, not physical and the animal is just waiting for someone to ask what is needed. Conversations with Animals Who Passed Genie also talked about communicating with animals who have passed on. According to her, this can be even easier because they're no longer limited by their bodies. The messages they send are often clearer, more detailed, and incredibly loving. People who felt guilty about euthanasia decisions or worried they hadn't done enough often found deep peace after hearing from their pet. These conversations helped them release burdens and understand their animals truly knew how loved they were. It's comforting to think that your pets still check in and are available to offer guidance from the other side. Marvels of Intuitive Connection At one point, I shared some of my own experiences with intuitive communication with animals. Like the time I negotiated with starlings who were dive-bombing a pool. Or the rabbit who mucnhed down my roses until I had a little “chat” with him. These moments may seem small, but they show how communication can create understanding, harmony, and even cooperation between humans and the wild world around us. Animals listen, respond and they appreciate being spoken to with respect and awareness. Exploring the Human–Animal Bond My conversation with Genie opened a doorway into an entirely different way of relating to our animal companions. Her work through The Human Animal Connection helps pet owners worldwide deepen their relationships, understand their animal's inner world, and dissolve emotional barriers. This is much bigger that solving behavior problems. This is really about soulful partnerships. Animals speak to you all the time, through energy, intuition, behavior, and subtle emotional cues. When you slow down and listen, you discover they've been sharing wisdom, comfort, and support all along. The Secret World of Animals Is Waiting This week's episode is a beautiful reminder of the secret world waiting right at your feet, curled up on your couch, napping on your lap, or chirping outside your window. Your animals may have insights you've never imagined and it’s possible they’ve been trying to help you more than you realize. And they may have little pearls of wisdom (or sass!) just waiting for you to hear. So tune in, get curious, and let the magic of communication with animals open your heart in new ways. Or get a session with an animal communicator like Genie to speak with your pet for you. You ever watch a couple and feel your gut whisper, “Something's not right here”… but you can't quite explain why? Homie, THIS is the episode that finally gives language to what your intuition already knows. Former CIA spy Andrew Bustamante is back, and together we break down the viral Lily Allen & David Harbour house-tour video — frame by frame — to reveal the micro-expressions, distancing behaviors, passive-aggression, and emotional patterns that almost no one catches on the first watch. This isn't gossip. This is about giving YOU the tools to spot manipulation, insecurity, emotional withdrawal, and mismatch long before it ruins your confidence, drains your energy, or makes you dim your damn light. Andrew exposes the real signals of discomfort, resentment, performative affection, sensory-driven conflict, and how small “jokes” can reveal massive cracks in a relationship. We go deep, from abandonment cues, to validation bids, to open-relationship dynamics, to the heartbreaking red carpet moments you absolutely must pay attention to. If you've ever ignored your gut… If you've ever questioned whether you're “overreacting”… If you've ever felt unseen or minimized by a partner… This episode is your permission slip to trust what you see. This week's episode is a true mixed bag in the best “We Saved You a Spot” way. Hannah and Barbi jump into holiday talk—sharing their favorite celebrations, Thanksgiving memories, and thoughts on the Macy's Day Parade—before taking a wild detour to Snake Island (yes, the one crawling with venomous golden lanceheads). They also chat about The David Movie, sprinkle in more Thanksgiving chatter, and welcome Mario to the conversation for a fun cameo. It's a relaxed, slightly chaotic, but still heartwarming episode full of laughs, side roads, and classic Mom-and-Hannah (and Mario) energy.

To hear eps as originally intended, please listen on the Patreon or Substack. We're picking back up our brief, alternative history of American class violence, the anticommunist apparatus, and anti-syndicalist dynamite false flags, much wider spread than even I would have realized, this time honing in on a number of rhyming, causal & effective deep events rippling down the welded wrought iron links of the anchor chain of history, largely Chicago and Milwaukee concentric sagas of strike action and counterinsurgent reactions by the capitalist powers that be.File today's episode under: the Haymarket Affair; the Bay View Massacre at the North Chicago Rolling Mills steel foundry that left at least seven Polish, German, and Native workers dead the day following the bloodbath in the Windy City; the 8 Hour Work Day movement; the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions (FOTLU), precursor to AFL; the snake Samuel Gompers; Milwaukee Central Labor Union socialist Paul Grottkau; Catholic Church Knights of Labor's Robert Shilling; Gov. Rusk; "shoot to kill" orders; Cpt. Treaumer muttering "halt" orders under his breath; the N. Chi Rolling Mills into Illinois Steel Company and then rolled up into US Steel come J.P. Morgan's Carnegie and otherwise monopolistic consolidation; Kosciusko Militia; FOTLU and Gomper's feud with the Knights of Labor; the labor significance of the phrase "amalgamated" (formed of individual craft unions) and what this says about ST protagonist Hicks McTaggart's work as strikebreaking PI for UNamalgamated Ops; Pynchon gets real Hobsbawmian, Gramscian, and Adamic-ian with it; "Haymarket FRAME-UP job"; explicitly references Bay View and Rolling Mills; Debs Rebellion; Pullman Strike; Henry Clay Frick nearly merc-ed by Berkman; the Gov. Steunenberg dynamiting; Big Bill Haywood's framing close shave; James McParland; Harry Orchard's confessions under duress; Pinkerton's; more US Steel; Mine Owners Association; Clarence Darrow; WFM; Wobblies; the McNamara Affair, the LA Times Building Bombing, and brothers J.J. and J.B.; surprise guilty pleas kneecapping the Job Harriman socialist mayoral candidacy in LA; spies catch Darrow bribing jurors?; Propaganda of the Deed comes to Milwaukee... or maybe not; the Italian Evangelical Church; ex-Catholic priest Rev. August Giuliani, MPD and BOI/DOJ informant; rabble rousing in the Third Ward, singing jingoistic songs, proselytizing to Catholics (which they didn't take kindly to from an apostate priest cum Protestant), and offering to pay for any anti-war anarchists or leftists of varying stripes' return tickets to the boot of Italy, all painting a picture of the gadfly pastor acting on behalf of federal law enforcement and local business interests with his troublemaking in the Ward; faced down by anarchists like Maria Nardini; the Bay View Riots, multiple Italian immigrant residents of Cream City killed by officers of the law with false flag violence (Antonio Fornasier and August Marinelli killed in the fray); the Milwaukee Station House Bombing of 1917; the comedy of errors; single deadliest day for law enforcement in American history up until 9/11; the curious lag in MPD response to the bomb's arrival at Giuliani's church; the claim the IMOPIO or infernal machine was anarchist made being sourced from BOI agent Julius Brown and possibly a Milwaukee congressman by way of MPD Capt. John T. Sullivan; the Galleanisti, followers of anarcho-communist Deed-Propagandist and advocate of various nitroglycerin and lead means for affecting change, squarely in the crosshairs; and much much more, breadcrumb trails we'll resume tracing next time.

Today, we're refining our BS reader with one the BEST in the biz - Jennifer Welch - from “I've Had It”!  Together, JVN and Jennifer dive into how to hold people accountable, discern the news we're watching,  and call out hypocrisy in both everyday life and in U.S. politics. Jennifer leads by example how we can practice accountability at home, in friendships, on social media, and with our elected leaders — without losing our joy or our sense of humor. Jennifer Welch is a designer and cohost of the hit podcast “I've Had It” and “IHIP News,” where she and her best friend Angie “Pumps” Sullivan say what so many of us are thinking about politics, culture, and everyday nonsense. I've Had It has turned into a viral space where elected officials get pressed on their choices, not their talking points. Jen has marched for justice — including the No Kings Rally this past June in Oklahoma City where she and JVN marched together.
