Pastor Greg continues our sermon series through Colossians, and discusses and encourages us with the apostle Paul's directive to walk in wisdom and speak with grace towards those outside the church.
Rocky Mountain Bible Church is an independent nondenominational church where the Bible is central to all that we teach and practice. We believe in the fundamental truths of the Bible: that the Word of God is verbally inspired and without error; that Jesus
Paul often mentions the word wisdom in his writings. James too defines wisdom in a beautiful way. Bro. Hughes considers the idea of walking in wisdom. What does walking in wisdom look like in everyday living? What is the evidence in our lives that we walk in wisdom? In previous messages in this series, we learn that walking refers to a way of living. In part two of our series, we find that there are two kinds of wisdom: man’s wisdom and a higher wisdom. When we talk in wisdom we are talking about a life that is shaped and controlled by the highest principles; God’s principles. Wisdom is something that must be sought after. We are not born with God’s wisdom; we must seek it. James says that if we lack wisdom, we must ask for it. We are walking in wisdom, it will affect every aspect in our life. The rewards for living wisley are all through the Bible. The reward for living in wisdom is a blessed life. Paul mentions wisdom all through his writing to the church at Colossae. In doing so, he contrasts the wisdom of the world versus the wisdom of God. So why do we follow wisdom’s path? Because it brings us into harmony with God’s will, His word, and His purpose for our life.
There are influences in life that will affect the outcome. How we yield to these influences determine how we end up. Bro. Hughes is captured by the phrase “Walking in wisdom” That should be the goal: To elevate our lives to a higher plane and align with God’s plan for our life. Paul writing to the Colossians says to redeem the time. The literal translation is to take advantage of every opportunity. Bro. Hughes returns to our study of the two wisdoms presented in James 3 and hits close to home in eveluating how we as a church demonstrate that wisdom in our ministry.
Paul uses two words in our text that open a treasure trove of blessing to us if we can understand them. Those words are walk and wisdom. He is speaking about more than just a mode of transportation and knowledge. There are several meanings in the Greek used for our word walk. There are things we need to talk toward or away from. One translation of walk means to occupy. There are things with which we need to be consumed. Walk can also mean to align with. There are things with which we need to conform, and many more with which we should not. We need to walk in a purposeful manner. We need to walk in a way that brings honor and glory to Him. The second word is wisdom. The word wisdom is powerful. It literally refers to practical skills. In Greek, it means higher or lower; worldly or spiritually. There are two types of wisdom: There is wisdom about man and then there is wisdom from God. One of these two wisdoms is influencing us and directing us in life. One of these wisdoms determines how we are walking. Each kind of wisdom has an effect. Bro. Hughes asks which kind of wisdom do we want to influence our life?
This is the second half of a text that was first dealt with March 11. While the other message focused on prayer, this message focuses on how we live our lives - particularly around non-believers. The point is, our life should match our words and vice versa.
Jesus set a perfect example for us of how to respond to sexual brokenness.

Sharing the Gospel is most effective when we LIVE like Jesus, 5 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Colossians 4:5 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:18 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. 1 John 2:5-6 11 Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. 1 Peter 2:11-12 and when we SPEAK like Jesus to everyone. 6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. Colossians 4:6 15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 17 For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. 1 Peter 3:15-17 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. Acts 2:42-47
Paul gives instruction for walking with outsiders.
To a watching world, the Christian life needs to be shared with our words, but also by our life. If our message does not line up with our walk, anything we say will fall on deaf ears. In this final message from our Colossians series, we will see just what we are called to do when it comes to speaking the gospel; and living it out.
To engage the culture, we have to walk toward messes.
