‘It's so far from your reality because I didn't know anybody and I was an immigrant'Anita Rani speaks to the Beijing-born director Chloé Zhao about her career and her latest film, Hamnet.Zhao made history in 2021 when, at the age of just 39, she became the first woman of colour - and, at the time, only the second woman ever - to win the best director award at the Oscars. Now, just five years after her Oscars triumph for Nomadland, Zhao is making headlines once again as the director of the critically-acclaimed movie Hamnet, a dramatisation about the son of the English playwright William Shakespeare. It won two Golden Globe awards, including one for ‘Best Drama Movie', and has recently been nominated for 8 Academy Awards too.Thank you to the Woman's Hour team for their help in making this programme. In Episode 365 of Jay Movie Talk, I continue January's Loners, Drifters, & Outsiders series with a dive into Drive. One of the most polarizing and influential films of the 2010s.This episode explores the Driver as a modern loner: a man defined by silence, routine, and strict personal code. I talk about how the film uses restraint, minimal dialogue, and sudden violence to tell its story, and why Drive continues to spark debate over whether it's style over substance or something far more layered.i break down the film's direction, performances, and atmosphere, including:*Ryan Gosling's internalized, minimalist performance*Nicolas Winding Refn's controlled visual style*The role of silence and routine in character development*The shocking use of violence and moral consequences *Cliff Martinez's iconic score and its impact on the film's identity.Whether you love this movie or bounced off it, there's a conversation to be had. and that's exactly what this episode is about.

This video breaks down why silence about challenges in your relationship protects trust, attraction, and intimacy, and explains the hidden ways oversharing slowly contaminates strong relationships. Most relationships do not fall apart because of betrayal. They weaken quietly when too many people are involved.

What if the “dumb party metal” you grew up with turned out to be one of the sharpest mirrors of 1980s America? In this episode of Dig Me Out: 80s Metal, we sit down with author, professor, and 80s tribute-band guitarist Jesse Kavadlo to talk about his new book Rock of Pages: The Literary Tradition of 1980s Heavy Metal and why those songs about girls, demons, and good times were actually wrestling with nuclear fear, censorship, and what it meant to grow up under the Cold War.Jesse walks us through how 80s metal lyrics connect to classic literature, from Def Leppard reimagining Genesis and Paradise Lost to Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne grappling with existential dread, addiction, and the possibility of global annihilation. We dig into the PMRC hearings and satanic panic, the way MTV videos turned escapism into literal chains and magic portals, and how Stranger Things surprisingly nails the mix of danger and freedom that metal kids actually felt in the 80s. Along the way, we talk subculture vs. streaming-era playlists, why Dio and Iron Maiden might be the true heirs of Romantic poetry, and how heavy metal may have nudged the Cold War toward its end at the Moscow Music Peace Festival. If you care about 80s heavy metal, the MTV era, or just love thinking about how songs work under the hood, this episode is for you. Fans of Iron Maiden, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Poison, Bon Jovi, Dio, and even Steel Panther's parody universe will hear this music in a new way. And if you're into how culture and politics collide in sound—think the way punk, hip-hop, or grunge carried the anxieties of their eras—you'll find a lot to chew on here too.Episode Highlights0:00 – Intro / Setting the stage How Jesse went from Brooklyn club stages and opening for Danger Danger to a PhD in literature and an 80s tribute band in St. Louis, and why 80s metal still gets written off as “by and for dummies” while Dylan and Kendrick win major literary prizes.5:12 – Are 80s metal lyrics actually literature? Cassette liner notes, goofy rhymes, and serious themes: Jesse breaks down how synecdoche, personification, metaphor, and symbolism show up in songs by Def Leppard, Metallica, and Twisted Sister.12:45 – PMRC, Tipper Gore, and the fight over teenage imagination We revisit the 1985 PMRC hearings, Dee Snider's testimony, and why “Under the Blade” and “Suicide Solution” say more about adult panic than teen corruption.20:30 – Cold War metal: Bon Jovi to Nuclear Assault How videos like Bon Jovi's “Runaway” and songs by Metallica, Ozzy, Megadeth, and Nuclear Assault carried nuclear anxiety, class conflict, and apocalyptic dread beneath all the hairspray.28:10 – Escapism, fantasy, and why Dio matters From Dungeons & Dragons to Iron Maiden and Dio, we explore metal's love of magic, fantasy, and portals as a deeply human response to a world that often felt unlivable.36:40 – MTV, chains, and the magic door We unpack the visual language of 80s metal videos: breaking out of asylums and prisons, falling through mirrors, and what it meant to “escape to the concert” once metal hit the mainstream.45:05 – Outsiders selling millions of records Why metal fans still felt like misfits even as the music dominated MTV, and how that outsider identity overlaps with the way readers and writers see themselves.52:30 – Van Halen, class struggle, and 1984 From “Running with the Devil” and “Jump” to “Hot for Teacher,” we look at David Lee Roth's working-class storytelling, school-as-prison imagery, and the eerie resonance of naming an album 1984 in the synth-drenched futureshock of the mid-80s.1:01:10 – Cowboys, Road Warriors, and the end of the world How metal videos borrowed from Escape from New York, The Road Warrior, and cowboy mythology to build a visual language of lawless survival and American ruggedness.1:09:45 – W.A.S.P., Nine Inch Nails, and moving the line What it means that W.A.S.P.'s “Animal (F*** Like a Beast)” got pulled from shelves while “Closer” became a critical darling, and how censorship lines shifted from the 80s to the 90s.1:18:20 – White Lion, Living Colour, and the politics hiding in band names We get into White Lion's unexpected political conscience, the uncomfortable optics of Pride, and how Living Colour wore their politics more explicitly.1:25:40 – How to listen differently after Rock of Pages Jesse explains how he hopes readers (and listeners) revisit 80s metal: with streaming open, videos queued up, and an ear tuned to metaphor, context, and the way these songs helped kids survive their era.1:33:50 – What's next and where to find the book Jesse hints at possible 90s projects and shares where to find Rock of Pages through Bloomsbury, indie bookstores, and the usual suspects. If this conversation makes you want to pull your old cassettes out of the box (or at least re-open your 80s metal playlist), don't stop here.Dive into the full archive of 70s & 80s metal episodes, history-of-the-band deep dives, and mixtapes at digmeoutpodcast.com.Join the DMO Union for bonus episodes, new release reviews, polls, and our private Discord community at dmounion.com.Subscribe, leave a review, and share this episode with the friend who still swears 80s metal was “just for fun.” Let's prove, once and for all, that the music that raised us was doing a lot more than just partying. In this episode, we hear a story of life transformation. Ever since September of 1992, when Chris McCandless was found deceased inside a bus in remote Alaska, the story of why he chose to walk into wilderness has captivated the world. Chris has been idolized, questioned, criticized and immortalized by strangers for decades. Books have been written and movies have been made to share his fascinating story, but were incomplete in their tellings. In 2014, Carine, Chris's sister published her own version of the story we have come to know as Into the Wild. In her heartbreaking memoir, the world gets a view into their world, and a chance to understand Chris in a brand new way, through the eyes of the person who knew and loved him the most.Banff film festival tickets For a full list of our sources, visit http://npadpodcast.com/episodesFor the latest NPAD updates, group travel details, merch and more, follow us on npadpodcast.com and our socials at:Instagram: @nationalparkafterdarkTikTok: @nationalparkafterdarkSupport the show by becoming an Outsider and receive ad free listening, bonus content and more on Patreon or Apple Podcasts. In my latest episode I sat with Simon Frederick to discuss his journey as a self-taught photographer, filmmaker, writer, director and producer. We talk about his upbringing in the UK with roots in Grenada. He talks about his mother's influence and wisdom which helped him navigate things as a child, and how he relies on her insights even today. Simon talks about what being a father means to him in the midst of all his artistic endeavors. We discuss in-depth some of his great works which include "Black is the New Black," "They've Gotta Have Us," and "The Outsiders". Lastly, I ask Simon about his thoughts on current cinema and how black brits have been portrayed in that medium. https://www.simonfrederick.uk
Are we ready for when outsiders start coming in? We recap the NFL playoffs and the coaching carousel, but mostly we focus on Josh Allen's troubles and Justin Herbert's allergy to winning big games. Brad also tries to process the trauma of the Patriots being just one win away from another Super Bowl, on top of the Knicks being officially a mess. So, he's distracting himself by looking ahead to seeing The Outsiders on Broadway this Thursday.

In memory of Kenosha's own Michael Schumacher, who passed away on December 29, 2026 at the age of 75, we are going to be devoting the next few Saturday episodes of the podcast to archival interviews featuring Schumacher. This interview is the first interview that I did with Schumacher. The year was 1999 and the book in question was "Francis Ford Coppola: A Filmmaker's Life." One of the greatest film directors in cinematic history, Coppola directed The Godfather, The Godfather Part Two, Apocalypse Now, The Outsiders, Peggy Sue Got Married, and The Rainmaker .... co-wrote the screenplay for Patton .... and produced American Graffiti, The Secret Garden, and The Black Stallion. I hope you enjoy this. GB
In Episode 364 of Jay Movie Talk, I continue January's Loners, Drifters & Outsiders series with The Place Beyond the Pines. A haunting, ambitious story about fathers, sons, and the weight of legacy. This episode explores how the film uses a bold, multi-generational structure to examine masculinity, desperation, privilege, and the consequences of choices that echo far beyond one lifetime. From Luke Glanton's quiet self-destruction to Avery Cross's moral compromise, the movie refuses easy answers and challenges the audience to sit with discomfort.I talk about the film's structure, performances, and themes, including: *Ryan Gosling's portrayal of a modern drifter searching for purpose.*Bradley Cooper's evolution from idealism to ambition.*Fatherhood, inherited trauma, and cycles that are hard to break.*Masculinity without guidance or emotional tools*Why does this movie hit harder with ageAlso, I talk about why The Place Beyond the Pines continues to grow in reputation over time, why some viewers might struggle with its narrative gamble, and why it fits perfectly within January's reflective tone.If you've seen the film, drop your thoughts on which storyline hit you the hardest, and whether you think the cycle was ever truly breakable.

In the previous episode, a catastrophic fall high on Siula Grande forced an impossible decision. With Joe badly injured and hanging in space, Simon cut the rope, believing his climbing partner was lost. Now, high in the Cordillera Huayhuash Reserve, both men must attempt to get off the mountain alive. Joe is alone with a shattered leg and no supplies. Simon is stranded high on the face with night closing in and no clear way down. Survival is no longer about the climb, but about whether either of them can endure what comes next.Sources:Simpson, Joe. Touching the Void, The 25th Anniversary Edition. In this unedited, on-site conversation with cosmologist Dr. Brian Keating, we examine what counts as evidence in modern physics by pressing on one of cosmology's most trusted observations: the cosmic microwave background. The discussion centers on a core tension between measurement and interpretation—specifically whether a near-perfect black body spectrum can reasonably be attributed to an early-universe plasma. As assumptions about the Big Bang, black body radiation, and material physics are questioned, the exchange becomes increasingly uncomfortable, revealing how deeply theoretical commitments shape scientific judgment. What emerges is not a verdict, but a rare, unfiltered look at how evidence, authority, and first principles collide in contemporary physics.PATREON https://www.patreon.com/c/demystifysciPARADIGM DRIFThttps://demystifysci.com/paradigm-drift-showHOMEBREW MUSIC - Check out our new album!Hard Copies (Vinyl): FREE SHIPPING https://demystifysci-shop.fourthwall.com/products/vinyl-lp-secretary-of-nature-everything-is-so-good-hereStreaming:https://secretaryofnature.bandcamp.com/album/everything-is-so-good-here00:00 Go! January kicks off with a defining entry in cinema history: Taxi DriverIn Episode 363 of Jay Movie Talk. I begin the Loners, Drifters, & Outsiders series by revisiting Martin Scorsese's haunting character study of isolation, alienation, and violence in post-Vietnam America. Fifty years later, Taxi Driver remains as unsettling, provocative, and conversation-worthy as ever. This episode dives deep into Travis Bickle as a character, the dangers of romanticizing loneliness, and how the film places us inside a fractured mindset rather than asking us to admire it. I discuss Scorsese's raw direction, Robert De Niro's career-defining performance, and why the film's ending still sparks debate decades later.I also explore how Taxi Driver has influenced modern cinema, why this archetype keeps resurfacing, and whether the film feels even more relevant today than it did in the 1970s .This isn't an easy watch, but it's an essential one. And it sets the tone for everything coming this month.

High in the Cordillera Huayhuash Reserve of the Peruvian Andes, two British climbers attempt the first ascent of the West Face of Siula Grande. The mountain is remote, unforgiving, and lethal to mistakes. After reaching the summit, a catastrophic accident during the descent forces a decision that places survival and death on opposite ends of a single rope. This episode of Kliq This wastes no time setting the tone. Kevin Nash and Sean Oliver come in hot, questioning the rituals people pretend still matter and poking holes in the way grown adults convince themselves certain days are special. The conversation immediately makes it clear that this is not a celebration episode. It is a reality check delivered with zero patience. From there, the show spirals into the kind of unpredictable territory listeners expect but never quite anticipate. Cultural habits, public hypocrisy, and modern obsessions are dissected in a way that feels reckless on the surface and oddly precise underneath. The humor lands because it is rooted in lived experience, not hot takes for clicks. The episode also taps into how technology, media, and trends quietly reshape behavior without anyone stopping to ask why. The discussion veers into places most podcasts would never touch, blending uncomfortable truths with offhand jokes that linger longer than expected. It is the kind of segment that makes listeners laugh first and then pause afterward. As the episode unfolds, Nash brings perspective that only comes from decades in wrestling, entertainment, and watching cycles repeat themselves. Observations about performers, audiences, and what actually matters when the lights are on cut through nostalgia and online noise. There is an underlying question throughout about what draws money versus what just draws reactions. By the end, the episode feels less like a recap of topics and more like a snapshot of how these conversations naturally evolve when nothing is off limits. It is loose, opinionated, and unapologetically unfiltered. For listeners who prefer honesty over polish, this one delivers exactly that. Let's start 2026 with a banger! Actor Malcolm McDowell returns to Ojai Talk of the Town for a wide-ranging, unhurried conversation about craft, longevity, and creative freedom.Rather than a press interview, this episode is a reflective dialogue — about working with great directors, living with iconic roles, playing outsiders and villains, and how one's relationship to the work changes once there's nothing left to prove. McDowell reflects on the surprises of a long career across stage, film, television, and voice work, and what a genuinely good day looks like now, when nobody's watching. We also talked about the Ojai Playhouse, local restaurant reviews and the changing faces of the community we both love. We did not talk about the Reivers of the northern English borderlands, the War of the Three Kingdoms or local roadwork.Smart, candid, funny, and occasionally philosophical, this is a conversation that rewards listening all the way through.

Not many of us would accept a job that risked life and limb, but for a brief moment in time, young men did just that - just to carry the mail. It may have only been in operation for 18 months, but the legacy of the Pony Express has lasted generations. A 2,000 mile horseback ride from Missouri to California posed risks of all kinds, but with no telegraph wires or trains connecting the coasts, brave men and their trusty steeds stepped up and battled the elements, warring nations and each other to keep the nation connected. Shane MacGowan lived his life as an outsider. He was an Irishman living in England, a troublemaking jug-eared punk with rotten teeth and a voracious appetite for drugs and alcohol. And with his band, The Pogues, he created a powerful synthesis of the traditional music of his homeland and a modern punk attitude. It was this gift for melding the sacred with the profane that led to the creation of one of the finest and most unique Christmas songs ever: "Fairytale of New York."
