Al Ewing is best known as the writer behind the critically-acclaimed comic series Immortal Hulk. It's a comic nominated for the Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series in 2019. In the time before proximity precautions and the COVID-19 pandemic, Al Ewing was booked to appear at the Toronto Comicon. The convention was eventually postponed – along with every other public gathering – but before it was, Aaron had this conversation with Al in promotion of his con appearance. As a result, it's a little different than the typical conversations Speech Bubble fans have become accustomed to. Since Al lives across the pond in the UK, this chat is the first this podcast had recorded over the phone and Aaron was given a tight 20 minutes to speak with him. (obviously, Al Ewing is a very busy man) Never the less, when you get an opportunity to speak with Al Ewing, writer of, in Aaron's opinion, the best comic book Marvel is publishing right now and, as he told Chip Zdarsky, one of the top three writers working at Marvel – you don't say, no.So here we are. Though his accent can make him difficult to understand at times, you're in for a great and rare conversation. Obviously, the two talk about Immortal Hulk, and how the decision to make the big green monster immortal came to be, but they also dive into Ewing's earliest relationship with comics and his transition from fan to professional. You'll also hear what he actually thinks about the comparisons between Immortal Hulk and Alan Moore's classic, Saga of the Swamp thing? Plus, get a little taste of what it's like writing the next big Marvel Event – Avengers/Fantastic Four Empyre – with Dan Slott. (Iron Man, Fantastic Four) This episode is sponsored by Hairy Tarantula and Project I.M.P.A.C.T. – a new Canadian superhero comic with issues #1 and #2 available on Comixology.Speech Bubble is also now on Patreon@Al_EwingAl Ewing on MarvelAl Ewing on WikipediaThe interview with Jim Zub referenced on this episodeSponsorsHairy TarantulaProject I.M.P.A.C.T.

I hope you're ready for a super dose of #YAWP Retro Reviews as we serve up a review of TWO (TWOOOOOO!!!) shows this episode. Since Al won Stomping Grounds and DDT won Fyter Fest, we had to combine them all into this jam-packed Great American Slam episode of Summerslam 97 (Al's pick) and Great American Bash 89 (DDT's pick). Plus, do you know why Captain Lou Albano was at Summerslam 97? Then we would love to hear from you! Oh and also Nick picks a match as well since he hasn't won anything yet. So this past week our social media manager Annielaurie took back her duties on the instagram. Along with a little sabotage from our project manager KC. She took the strategy of having a good aesthetic and making our instagram look good. She also was trying out commenting on others peoples posts and promoting more engagement. We also went from 430 followers to 492 followers. Although we grew in followers this didn’t seem to improve how many views/likes we got on our posts. The posts got about the same amount of likes and views as previous posts. For our twitter she went with the tactic of talking about the Cleveland Cavaliers. She did live tweets during the game from a girls perspective. I think she really embarrassed her brother and most of her family, but it paid off because people found them to be hilarious. She had a goal of getting 10 retweets on one tweet and she actually reached 11. Before we only had 39 twitter followers and we have actually reached 50 followers. On youtube we had 66 subscribers at the start and have reached 72 subscribers. Our 10k calorie challenge video on YouTube has reached up to 143 views and we are hoping that will continue to go up. Facebook we struggled with meeting our goal of 150 likes but we did move up to 98 likes. We will have to continue to brainstorm ideas for facebook and how to grow our following. Twitch we are still working on getting all of our videos uploaded, it took a lot longer than we thought it would so that will be an ongoing process. Snapchat we are also still playing around with, last week for week three we had our interns take over the snapchat. Each day we had a different intern be in charge of the snapchat basically just adding their friends to it and posting what they do here. So overall I think we can all agree that Annielaurie is the social media manager for a reason. Since AL blew us out of the water for the rest of our summer experiment we are going to complete these as a team. Here are some strategies and goals she has for the week. Goals Instagram- 510 followers Facebook- 150 likes Twitter- 60 followers, 15 retweets, 20 likes Snapchat-Continue to add friends, and grow our stories Youtube- 78 subscribers, 200 views Twitch- Continue to upload content Strategies Instagram– Run a contest https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/245100 -------------- Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/giantkiller... We tread a little new ground here, as our choice of the new release Ghost in the Shell marks the first movie we weren’t fully simpatico in our desire to go see. Since Al was cautiously interested, but Anthony was much less so, it made for a different viewing and discussion experience. We open up the movie talk with a fun little tangent on the recent trends in movie trailers (it’s relevant, Ghost in the Shell followed the trend) before we get to the heart of the matter. Our discussion covered a wide range of topics, including the effects of expectation on our perception of a movie we were unsure on. We dabbled in some more world building talk (it’s no John Wick as Anthony would say), as well as the cinematography and visual aesthetic that makes this movie somewhat unique in the current movie landscape. Plus don’t get us started (this was probably our favorite part) on the cast, which is really where this movie was at its strongest. From the stars we know (Michael Pitt sighting!), to the relative unknowns (seriously how did it take Al that long to recognize Euron Greyjoy), this cast is the life of the party on screen. Finally, we made up for the trepidation going in by drinking a beer we were both really excited to try, the inaugural and inimitable Al’s Ales Reserve Label Russian Imperial Stout (Spoiler Alert: it was really good). SO check out this brand new offering from Flix & a Six, only on the Spinchoon!
