Send us a textHEDWIGBefore we say auf wiedersehen to Season 14 with its eight revamps of the previously covered during the show's first five years, the boys of TGTPTU reveal their unexpected special little packages: 1x1's, wherein each host shall choose a single film by its merits of discussion and unlikelihood to be exposed on a future 4x4, creator, or thematic season. The first of these darlings is Thomas's: HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH (2001). Adapted from the rock musical of the same name that started as the collaboration between frontman of the NYC-based band Cheater (performing on stage as Hedwig's band) Stephen Trask and then actor later turned actor-director with this debut film John Cameron Mitchell. Hedwig's story, on stage told in song and monologue, of male-to-female surgery so as to marry an American GI and leave East Berlin originated from Mitchell's own experiences as a military brat in Germany and Kansas trailer parks while the jealousy and newer betrayal Hedwig expresses toward her protégé and superstar success/successor Tommy Gnosis (also played by Mitchell in the play but embodied by Early Aughts indie film darling and pod-contentious actor Michael Pitt) is elevated by Trask's music and lyrics and is expanded and enriched with animation, locations, and added characters (most notably Andrea Martin as the band's manager) for the silver screen. Learn more about the progression from stage to screen from Thomas on research; jam out to Rock Facts with Ryan (sorry, mineralogists, but we're talking glam and punk rock here); former host Jack on vibes in the rhythm section wakes up mid-episode to like the film and dig the hand-drawn animation; and Ken lands his rimshot, getting to tell his joke that calls back to TGTPTU's Nolan coverage (Season 12). Spoiler: You'll be hearing from four Hed heads. Reminder: You don't put a bra in a dryer! CONTENT WARNING: At least once during the episode the “f” word (“Ferengi”) is used. If you're a reader, listener, viewer, or follower of BEHIND THE LENS, then you know that this week is a very special show as it's the last show of 2024 AND the last show of the first TEN YEARS of BTL!!! And I think this is a special befitting the occasion thanks to my special guest w/d JOHN CORCORAN talking about his debut short film SKYFOREST, plus my exclusive interview with JACK HUSTON talking all things DAY OF THE FIGHT. We kick off the show with my exclusive interview with writer/director JACK HUSTON discussing his narrative feature directorial debut, DAY OF THE FIGHT. A truly knockout directorial that shows me that as good as Jack is acting onscreen, he's even better as a director and writer behind the lens. Written and directed by JACK HUSTON, DAY OF THE FIGHT boasts a megawatt cast including, among others, Michael Pitt as "Mikey", Ron Perlman as MIkey's trainer and father figure "Stevie", John Magaro as "Father Patrick", Steve Buscemi as Mikey's uncle, and Joe Pesci as Mikey's dad, along with Nicolette Robinson and Cameron Williamson. Then writer/director JOHN CORCORAN joins me live fresh off his West Coast premiere, discussing his directorial debut with the short film/concept film SKYFOREST, a sci-fi thriller that will have you wanting more as soon as it ends. Hard to believe that so much tension and anticipation can be built within 15 short minutes, but John together with his editor Jordan H. Johnson does just that. Truth be told, I didn't want to see this short end! http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

I have such a vivid memory of watching this in the theater, basically because I was obsessed with the two actors, Ryan Gosling and Michael Pitt.Even though it's not a holiday movie like at all, I enlisted Mikey to take a walk down the seedy roads of early 00s forensic true crime-ish films. We talk about how the thin script is really made up by the acting, Michael Pitt being amazing, and all the sexual tension between every character. Phil and Alex discuss episode ten of Hannibal Season 2, Naka-Choko, in which Vincenzo Natali goes sicko mode, Michael Pitt dares another television production to fire him, and Will Graham perfects the Jason Vorhees slow walk and teleport which seems to only work on panicking females struggling to perform everyday tasks. Today we say goodbye to our annual MOVIES ARE GAY theme for June and it's one of our favorite months. So eye opening. Sometimes hole opening. We're coasting out strong with our last selection and it just so happens to be (I think) our first official musical and it's one that took us by surprise waaaaay back in 2001 when we happened to lay eyes on it in our movie theaters and dorm rooms. It was intensely appreciated in its time by a small audience but John Cameron Mitchell & Stephen Trask's undeniably entertaining rock musical has proven influential and enduring. Of course we're discussing the 2001 queer cult classic “HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH” directed by John Cameron Mitchell and starring himself, Miriam Shor, Andrea Martin and Michael Pitt with music by Stephen Trask. A young boy growing up in East Berlin finds her way to America following a botched gender reassignment surgery. Hansel, now carrying her mother's name, is alone in an isolating new world. She reinvents herself through music and falls in love. Of course it doesn't work out so we come into the story of Hedwig through bitterness, salad bars and solid rock and roll jams. Will Hedwig find the fame that was stolen from her? Will she become what she was always meant to be? One way or another we all do. Shit, dawg, that's deep ((hits blunt)). We got that Criterion up at the house but here's a version we found online in Spanish: https://archive.org/details/Hedwig.And.The.Angry.InchAngeeParaZoowoman.website_201804 Don't gat mad at us if it's a dead link.

The film really never rose to prominence or critical acclaim on release but to people who appreciate the flick it offers a totally unique take on a slasher film. As a pediatric hospitalist, Dr. Michael Pitt is familiar with the importance of making the rounds at a hospital. But within that system, he saw inefficiencies that led to patients and their families being uncertain of when they'd see their doctor next. That meant having to wait potentially hours without knowing when the rounds would take place.Dr. Pitt asked the question: why can we see where we're at in line for a haircut or a restaurant reservation, but not for hospital rounds? So he and his team created Q-rounds, a software that connects doctors, patients, nurses and families so they know when the doctor will be visiting next. On this week's episode of the Medical Alley Podcast, Dr. Pitt joined our Frank Jaskulke for a conversation about how the platform works and what sort of results the Q-rounds team has seen so far since it was deployed. He also shares what it was like to go from being a doctor to being an entrepreneur and the lessons he learned along the way.Follow Medical Alley on social media on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

“It's what I have to work with.”Adapted from the critically acclaimed Off-Broadway musical, Hedwig and the Angry Inch tells the story of an East German rock star on a journey of self-discovery. Directed by and starring John Cameron Mitchell, the film premiered at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue the 2002 Film Independent Spirit Awards Best Cinematography Nominees series with a conversation about Hedwig and the Angry Inch. With standout performances from Mitchell as well as Michael Pitt and Miriam Shore, Hedwig wrestles with difficult questions around gender that still resonate today. While our opinions differ on certain story elements, both agree the trailblazing musical remains an artful and subversive work.We discuss som musical numbers, the complex journeys of Hedwig, Yitzhak, and ‘antagonist' Tommy Gnosis, as well as supporting roles from Andrea Martin and Stephen Trask. Jack Huston has worked with Scorsese, Ridley Scott, David O' Russell, The Coens, had meaty roles on series like “Mayfair Witches,” “Fargo,” and, maybe most notably, “Boardwalk Empire,” where he played Richard Harrow. His latest project is Lulu Wang's Amazon series “Expats.” On this episode he talks about gaining 30 pounds for that part (which wasn't as much fun as it sounds), why it all starts with the voice for him, writing and directing his passion project “The Day of The Fight” for Michael Pitt and Joe Pesci, and he reveals a common trait of all great directors he's known. Plus we discuss the current state of Independent Film, what we think should change, and much more. “Expats” streams on Amazon Prime starting January 25th. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram
Let's derange the world because the profile doesn't fit the profile, which means that we're covering Barbet Schroeder's 2002 film Murder By Numbers. Tagging in for this lively conversation are Patrick and Gena of the Kill By Kill podcast. Join us as we go all in on this "thriller" that's filled to the brim with queer overtones (courtesy of a baby Ryan Gosling and Michael Pitt), while trying to figure out which of the two main storylines is the more interesting one. Bullock is innocent, though! Plus: one very random baboon attack, absinthe etiquette, Claire Redfield's jacket, showy psychos, curtain bangs and a mind-bogglingly huge $50 million budget. Questions? Yair Elazar Glotman, a film composer and a musician based in Berlin, delves into his score for new Netflix thriller, Reptile, starring Benicio Del Toro, Justin Timberlake, Alicia Silverstone and Michael Pitt. He also explains how he was introduced to Genelec monitors early on in his musical education for multi-channel compositions and spatialisation work.
Chris and Taylor review the crime thriller film, Reptile, directed by Grant Singer in his feature-film directorial debut, from a screenplay he co-wrote with Benjamin Brewer and Benicio del Toro, and a story he co-wrote with Brewer. Following the brutal murder of a young real estate agent in Scarborough, Maine, a hardened detective attempts to uncover the truth in a case where nothing is as it seems, and by doing so dismantles the illusions in his own life. The film stars Benicio del Toro, Justin Timberlake, Alicia Silverstone, Eric Bogosian, Ato Essandoh, Domenick Lombardozzi, and Michael Pitt.Follow us on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thepotentialpodcast/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thepotentialpodcastTwitter: https://twitter.com/thepotentialpodSupport us on Patreon:patreon.com/thepotentialpodcastThanks to our sponsor: AURAAura:Get a 14-day free trial of Aura for individuals, couples and or their family by going to aura.com/potential ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
This week, we speak to composer Yair Elazar Glotman about his score for the latest prestige thriller from Netflix, Reptile, a stylish neo-noir starring Benicio Del Toro as a mercurial detective looking into the murder of a real estate agent. Everyone's a suspect, from the victim's boyfriend (Justin Timberlake) to the creepy guy down the street (played by Michael Pitt), even to some of Del Toro's fellow officers (incluidng Ato Essandoh, Domenick Lombardozzi and Eric Bogosian). It's the directorial debut of music video director Grant Singer, who fills each corner of the frame with cold, calculating and precise compositions, painting an isolated, alien world of hidden motivations and untold terrors hiding within the mundane. Singer's work in Reptile closely mirrors the work of David Fincher, and it's an intriguing experience to behold -- not least because of Glotman's dissonant, visceral, textural score. Building eerie combinations of altered string compositions and textured syths, Glotman's work fills in the empty spaces left by Reptile's sparse, opaque script, echoing through the vast voids of understanding the central mystery leaves its viewers. Now, I'm pleased to have Glotman on the podcast to talk about how he got started in music and composing, his work with Singer on Reptile, and his fascination with pulling apart the sound of things to see what he can find. You can find Yair Elazar Glotman at his official website here. Reptile is currently streaming on Netflix. You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Netflix Music.
In this episode of Deep Focus, your host Rodrigo Perez sits down to chat with Grant Singer, the director of the crime thriller/drama, "Reptile." Yes, it's a crime film, superficially—a hardened detective investigates a mysterious murder— and resembles, in some respects, the grim mood of a serial killer procedural in the vein of, say, David Fincher. But it's also a character-driven drama and murder mystery—featuring excellent and consistently surprising supporting turns by Alicia Silverstone, Justin Timberlake, Michael Pitt, Eric Bogosian, and more— that maybe more resembles something like Denis Villeneuve's “Prisoners,” mixed with the system-is-rigged futility of “Chinatown.” This is high praise, obviously, but it's deserved. Singer makes his feature-length directorial debut with "Reptile" which is co-written along with Benicio del Toro, and we spoke about what del Toro brought to the project, both as an actor and writer, the process of getting him and dive deep into its many themes of shedding skin, dreams, broken dreams and more. It's an underrated movie and you should check it out asap. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/support
Actor-turned-director Jack Huston on the making of his directorial debut "Day of the Fight", casting Michael Pitt, and its tale of redemption. The post “Day of the Fight”, interview with director Jack Huston and producers Josh Porter and Emma Tillinger Koskoff appeared first on Fred Film Radio.
This week, Matt Goldberg (formerly of Turner Classic Movies, currently of the Substack Commentary Track) joins us for the mighty return of... gasp.... John Travolta in a good role? First, we cover Jackie Earle Haley's directorial debut, Criminal Activities, a messy but ultimately interesting Tarantino riff in which a group of down-and-out high school buddies (Michael Pitt, Christopher Abbott, Rob Brown, Dan Stevens) ends up inadvertently in debt to a cheeky, Macbeth-quoting mob boss (Travolta, having a grand old time). They can get out from under his thumb, if they do one big job for him -- kidnap the failson (Edi Gathegi) of his mob rival. Twists, turns, and darkly comic antics ensue, as a deeply-overqualified cast leans into the film's innate goofiness. On the other side of the coin comes Oliver Stone's poorly-aged, deadly serious, self-righteous political biopic Snowden, charting the life of Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, doing his best Elizabeth Holmes impression) as he goes from dull intelligence agent to dull whistleblower. Cage shows up for a few minutes as Snowden's jaded mentor, but otherwise it's two-plus hours of Stone's overwrought self-insistence that what you're watching is The Most Groundbreaking, Earth-Shattering Discovery About Government Surveillance Ever.
