Comics writer Si Spurrier (Hellblazer, The Flash) joins Byron to discuss his highly anticipated new projects, the Ignition Press techo-folk horror series Minotaur and his new DSTLRY experimental portal fantasy project A Mischief of Magpies, two fantastic books dropping on the same day in July! We discuss the wide ranging roots of Minotaur including the basic premise from writer Arthur C. Clarke's classic assertion that advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic to the possible ramifications of the singularity getting loose, do a deep dive into its main protagonist photographer Gloria Monday, delve into the collaborative process with series artist Mike Dowling, and how Si avoids nihilism in dark storytelling.
Today's show is sponsored by Huion, makers of the Huion Kamvas 22 (Gen 3) — a 21.5" pen display with a gorgeous 2.5K screen and really smooth performance. Bottom line: it feels great to draw on — and it punches way above its price. • Check it out at https://comiclabshop.com • Use code COMICLAB5 for an exclusive 5% discount! (Valid through June 14th) This week, Dave returns from Alaska Comics Camp — https://minicon.alaskarobotics.com/comics-camp/ — with a glowing review of what he calls one of the most meaningful experiences of his professional life. He explains how the camp blends education, community, mentorship, and artistic growth in a remote setting that forces attendees to disconnect from technology and reconnect with one another. Along the way, Brad and Dave discuss what makes the camp special, the value of peer-to-peer learning, the recent panic over Kickstarter's updated NSFW guidelines, Eisner nominations, and the realities of pursuing recognition in comics. Alaska Comics Camp Alaska Robotics Comics Camp is a four-night creative retreat in the southeast Alaska rainforest for comics pros, visual storytellers, and adjacent creators — writers, game devs, filmmakers, journalists, musicians, and more. You have to apply to attend. It's not a standard “buy a badge and show up” event; accepted campers attend after the Alaska Robotics Mini-Con in Juneau. Cost: Camp is listed at $800, which includes four nights of lodging, meals, and transportation to/from downtown Juneau. Financial aid is available, and asking for aid does not affect application review. What to expect: workshops, presentations, peer conversations, campfires, board games, hanging out, and wandering through the woods and nearby ocean beach — basically “a professional development conference for people who don't like conference rooms.” Comfort level: rustic but not brutal — heated cabins, bunk beds with mattresses, flushing toilets, hot showers, power outlets, meals, snacks, coffee/tea, towels, and comfort items are provided. There's no regular Wi-Fi or cell service at camp, though service is reachable by hike or ride. How to participate next year: watch the Alaska Robotics Mini-Con / Comics Camp site and their social channels for the next application window. Recent camps have used an application process with deadlines months ahead of the event, so don't wait until spring to start looking. https://minicon.alaskarobotics.com/comics-camp/ Topics Covered A complete tour of Alaska Comics Camp and how it evolved from a small Juneau event into an international gathering of cartoonists School visits, library presentations, the Alaska Robotics Mini-Con, and the camp experience itself Why the lack of cell service is one of the camp's greatest strengths Classes taught by attendees on topics including storytelling, lettering, humor writing, character development, publishing, and business An NSFW-comics discussion that impressed Brad with the camp's openness and professionalism The importance of "Comics Rules" (similar to Chatham House Rules) in creating a safe environment for sharing industry information Real-world discussions of publishing contracts, agents, income, and career sustainability The anonymous income survey that helps attendees understand the wide range of successful cartooning careers Why Alaska Comics Camp has become one of Dave's favorite events in all of comics Stories from ComicLab listeners who attended camp after hearing about it on the podcast Dave's observations about Alaska's landscape, culture, and strong sense of community The tale of a failed camp water pump and Pat Race's MacGyver-level solution involving a distillery, a fire department, and a garden hose The viral misinformation claiming Kickstarter had banned pornography What Kickstarter's updated NSFW guidelines actually said Why Stripe — not Kickstarter — is the real concern for adult-content creators Brad's emergency solo Pro Tips episode explaining the new guidelines How creators can avoid overreacting to social-media panic cycles Listener feedback about what Brad and Dave's voices sound like to non-Americans Congratulations to friends of the show, including Ryan North, Glenn Fleishman, Tony Cliff, and Steve Lieber, on their Eisner nominations A discussion about award submissions, advocacy, and why creators must nominate themselves The realities of comics awards, including Eisners, Ringo Awards, Hugos, Reubens, and Ignatz Awards Whether award nominations come from changing your work — or simply years of steady improvement and persistence You get great rewards when you join the ComicLab Community on Patreon$2 — Early access to episodes$5 — Submit a question for possible use on the show AND get the exclusive ProTips podcast. Discord: https://discord.gg/zPH6EeEgfXCanale Telegram: https://t.me/blablafantasPagina Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bla.blafantasy

With both Brad and Dave nominated for awards this year, the guys spiral into a surprisingly deep conversation about awards, marketing, ego, and whether creators should plaster “award nominee” stickers all over their books. Later, they tackle a listener question about using 3D models, digital sets, and reference material in comics production — leading to a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how both creators actually build comics pages in tools like Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop. Along the way, they discuss why imperfections matter in cartooning, how typography affects visual storytelling, and why “cheating” is often just another word for “working smarter.” Today's Show Should you put an award nomination on a book cover? Do you have a hard time calming your nerves? Author Raina Telgemeier tries a practice to get out of her head, one step at a time.Summary: In this episode of The Science of Happiness, bestselling graphic novelist Raina Telgemeier reflects on growing up with anxiety, panic attacks, and emetophobia—the fear of throwing up—and shares how transforming those experiences into stories helped her feel less alone and inspired young readers to seek support. Through a week-long walking meditation practice, Raina explores what it means to slow down, reconnect with her body, and face discomfort with curiosity rather than avoidance. How To Do This Practice: Choose a small, quiet space: Find a place where you can walk slowly back and forth for about 10–15 steps without interruption. This could be a hallway, living room, backyard, or even a hotel room. Set a timer for 10 minutes: Giving yourself a set amount of time helps you stop checking the clock and allows you to settle more fully into the practice. Begin walking slowly and naturally: Walk at a comfortable pace, paying attention to the sensation of each step—your heel touching the ground, the shift of your weight, and the movement of your body. Focus on your breath: As you walk, gently notice your breathing. You might take a slow breath before turning around at the end of each pass, letting your breath help anchor your attention. When your mind wanders, return to the movement: Thoughts, worries, memories, or distractions will come up. Rather than judging yourself, simply guide your attention back to your steps and breathing. Notice how you feel afterward: When the timer ends, pause for a moment before moving on with your day. Take note of any shifts in your body, mood, or pace of mind, even subtle ones can matter. Opening hook / origin Chris, you've said that roadside coyote scene was the first thing you wrote, even before you knew the full story. What was it about that moment that felt like the right entry point into this world? 2. Tone and influences You're blending eco-horror and neo-noir in a really striking way here. What's each of your relationship to those genres—are there specific books or films that shaped how you approached them, or personal favorites that were on your mind while making this? 3. The prose chapter choice That opening prose chapter from Oilfield Graveyard: Tales of the Wildcatter Myth is such a bold structural swing. What does prose allow you to do that comics alone wouldn't, especially in setting up the mythology? 4. The Wildcatter as a presence The Wildcatter evolves from something almost abstract in issue #2 to something disturbingly human in issue #3. How did you approach revealing it piece by piece without losing the mystery? 5. Character and transformation The grandmother's descent is genuinely unsettling. How did you think about her transformation in relation to the oil itself, is it possession, corruption, or something more symbolic? 6. Visual storytelling and horror lineage Charlie, you spent years defining the visual language of long-form horror on The Walking Dead. When you approach a story like this, how does that experience inform your instincts—and where do you find yourself deliberately doing something different? 7. Pacing and silent storytelling Charlie, one thing that really stands out is how much space you're given for quiet, atmospheric sequences—scenes that breathe and flow without a lot of dialogue or overt plot movement. How do you approach pacing those moments visually so they still feel propulsive, and what do you think comics can do in those silent stretches that other mediums can't? 8. Fun / silly question: If the Wildcatter had a playlist, what's the one song that absolutely has to be on it?

Ideally, books offer something for kids and adults alike. Chances are if you and your child are independently enjoying a book, you probably will enjoy reading that book together.

In addition to the main storyline, four supplemental "Tales of the Sinestro Corps" one-shot specials and a Blue Beetle tie-in issue were concurrently released. The story centers on the Green Lanterns of Earth—Hal Jordan, Kyle Rayner, John Stewart and Guy Gardner—and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps as they fight an interstellar war against the Sinestro Corps, an army led by the former Green Lantern Sinestro who are armed with yellow power rings and seek a universe ruled through fear. A 1986 Alan Moore "Tales of the Green Lantern Corps" story was the thematic basis of the storyline. Many characters were changed, killed off, or re-introduced as a result of the event.Critical and fan reception to "Sinestro Corps War" was highly positive. Many reviewers ranked it among the top comic books of the year, and the storyline's first issue garnered a 2008 Eisner Award nomination for Best Penciller/Inker or Penciller/Inker Team. The storyline was also a financial success, and several issues underwent multiple printings. "Sinestro Corps War" is the second part of a trilogy in the Green Lantern storyline, preceded by the 2005 miniseries Green Lantern: Rebirth. The conclusion of "Sinestro Corps War" sets up the third and final part of the trilogy, Blackest Night, which was published in 2009.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:07 UTC on Tuesday, 21 April 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Sinestro Corps War on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Matthew.

A Note from James:This is why I love doing podcasts—talking to people like Dr. Sheena Howard, author of Why Wakanda Matters. Wakanda is the country where Black Panther is from, and Sheena has written extensively about comics, including work on Black Panther itself. We talk about comics, race, and storytelling. I asked a question I was almost afraid to ask—whether the Black Panther movie was racist against other Black people—and she gave a surprising answer. We also talk about a time she was abducted in Jamaica, along with a lot of other topics.I loved this conversation. Please listen. Episode Description:James sits down with Dr. Sheena Howard—scholar, comic book writer, and Eisner Award winner—for a conversation that moves between pop culture, publishing, and personal survival. They use Black Panther as a lens to examine how stories shape identity, how representation evolves, and why cultural narratives are often filtered through systems that weren't built to support them. Sheena breaks down the tension between nationalism and isolationism in Wakanda, and why audiences interpret the same story in radically different ways. The conversation also goes deeper—into how gatekeeping works in publishing today, how creators can bypass it, and why building your own audience may be the most reliable path forward. And then there's the story she didn't tell for years: being abducted at 19. What happened, why she stayed silent, and what it reveals about psychology, fear, and resilience. This episode is about storytelling—but also about control: who has it, who doesn't, and how to take it back. What You'll Learn:Why “Black superheroes don't sell” is a myth—and how the industry perpetuates it anywayThe real gatekeeping mechanism in publishing today (and why audience ownership matters more than ever)How subtle bias shows up now—not in obvious barriers, but in shifting goalpostsWhat makes a story resonate across audiences (and why Black Panther worked at scale)The psychology of abusive situations—and how awareness and boundaries are built over timeTimestamped Chapters:[03:04] A Note from James[03:53] Favorite Superheroes: From Captain America to Black Panther[04:27] Why Black Panther Connected Culturally[04:43] The $1.2B Question: Why So Late for Black Superheroes?[05:17] Luke Cage, Netflix, and the “Myth” That Black Stories Don't Sell[05:39] Tyler Perry and the “Outlier” Problem[06:23] Pressure on Black-Led Films to Be Perfect[07:00] What Wakanda Represents (Uncolonized Possibility)[07:53] Killmonger: Anger, Oppression, and Relatability[08:23] MLK vs. Malcolm X Parallel in Black Panther[09:00] Identity Formation: African vs. African American Perspectives[09:47] Are Black Superheroes Designed to “Feel Safe”?[10:28] Gentrification, Stereotypes, and Media Influence[11:50] Media Isn't “Just Entertainment”[12:00] Early Representation and Cultural Messaging[12:28] Who Created Black Panther—and Why That Matters[13:07] Rewriting History: What Would She Change?[13:49] Designing a Modern Black Superhero[14:47] Why a Modern Hero Might Be “Invisible”[15:44] Publishing Barriers and Gatekeeping Conversations[16:36] Social Media vs. Traditional Publishing Access[17:26] Building 163K Followers—and Still Not Enough[21:47] The Instagram Post: “I Was Abducted at 19”[22:11] How It Started: Cheap Tour, No Money, Bad Decision[23:05] The Trap: Locked House and Escalation[25:00] Refusal and Survival Strategy[26:02] Car Crash and Escape Attempt[27:00] Walking Away and Getting Home[28:30] Why She Stayed Silent for Years[29:20] Abusive Relationships and Self-Blame[30:26] Leaving Abuse: The Role of Her Son[31:06] Love Bombing and Early Warning Signs[33:02] Recognizing Red Flags in Relationships[35:45] Teaching Kids Boundaries and Self-Worth[37:21] “Is Wakanda Racist?”—The Big Question[38:00] Nationalism vs. Racism Explained[39:00] Isolationism vs. Imperialism[41:00] Why Some Black Superheroes Don't Break Out[43:00] The Loss (and Survival) of Great Storytelling[46:14] How She Got Hired by Marvel (Cold Email + PI)[48:29] Why Pitching Ideas to Marvel Often Fails[50:00] Cold Outreach: Being Seen Before Heard[52:00] Do You Need Social Media to Sell Books? Today on Word Balloon, I'm joined by Jim McCann, a creator whose career spans stylish indie storytelling and major superhero runs, and he's back with something new. Jim joins me to talk about The Other Half, his brand-new detective comic from Ignition Press. It's a sharp, modern homage to the high-society sleuths of the 1930s and '40s. Very much in the tradition of Nick and Nora Charles, where glamour, wit, and mystery collide. We dig into the tone of the book, the appeal of that classic era, and how Jim updates the form without losing its elegance. We also look back at Jim's Eisner Award–winning graphic novel Return of the Dapper Men, his time at Marvel Comics writing Hawkeye & Mockingbird, and his years working behind the scenes as Marvel's marketing director. It's a wide-ranging conversation about craft, career pivots, and why some styles, and some stories...never go out of fashion.

If you're into comics and graphic novels, you probably know of Raina Telgemeier and Scott McCloud. Telgemeier rose to "first-name-only status" among middle-grade readers with her adaptations of The Babysitters Club and award-winning autobiographical graphic novels including Smile and Guts. Scott McCloud is a leading comics theorist, having spoken and written about the art form since the 1980s. In fact, Telgemeier credits McCloud's work for inspiring her when she was a teenager. Now these two leading artists come together to discuss the unique power of comics and their new graphic novel, The Cartoonists Club. Their book centers around four characters: Makayla, who is bursting with ideas but doesn't know how to make them into a story; Howard, who loves to draw but struggles to come up with ideas and his dad thinks comics are a waste of time; Lynda, who constantly draws in her sketchbook but keeps focusing on what she feels are mistakes; and Art, who simply loves being creative. Throughout the book, Telgemeier and McCloud infuse how-to advice on comics creation that, they hope, will inspire a new wave of cartoonists. They both have seen renewed enthusiasm for the genre, especially among younger readers and are teaming up to provide an entertaining and practical guide to the magic of comics storytelling. Raina Telgemeier is the #1 New York Times bestselling, multiple Eisner Award–winning creator of Smile, Sisters, and Guts, which are all graphic memoirs based on her childhood. She is also the creator of Drama and Ghosts, and is the adapter and illustrator of the first four Baby-sitters Club graphic novels. Facing Feelings: The Art of Raina Telgemeier is a companion catalog for an exhibition held at Ohio State University's Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum. Raina lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. To learn more, visit her online at goraina.com. Scott McCloud is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art; Making Comics: Storytelling Secrets of Comics, Manga, and Graphic Novels; Zot!; and The Sculptor. He is a frequent lecturer on the power of visual communication, creator of the international 24-hour comic movement, and, in 2021, was inducted into the Will Eisner Awards Hall of Fame. His art and stories are available in more than 30 languages and on the web at scottmccloud.com Buy the Book The Cartoonists Club Brick and Mortar Books

On today's episode, I talk to comics writer Brian Michael Bendis. Originally from Cleveland, OH, Brian knew from an early age he wanted to make comics. His late teens and twenties were spent making his own comics, some of them published by Caliber Press, and in 1996, a lot of this work was collected together at Image. This led to working on the Spawn spin-off Sam and Twitch, and in 1998, he began releasing Powers, which would go on to garner both critical and commercial success, as well as Harvey and Eisner Awards. In 2000, Brian co-created Miles Morales when he began writing Ultimate Spider-Man. The next year, Brian began a defining run on Daredevil and co-created Jessica Jones with the start of Alias. And this is essentially just the first decade of his career! Since then, he went on to write defining runs on comics like Avengers and New Avengers, events like House of M, books like Superman and Action Comics for DC, and most recently, for the 25th anniversary of Powers, Brian and artist Michael Avon Oeming are creating a new 12-issue series at Dark Horse, and it's great! Drawing from her experience as an author and cultural critic who consistently challenges predictable opinions, Roxane Gay urges us to embrace the danger and discomfort of dissent. But in an age of polarised opinion warfare, this comes at a personal and professional cost. Courage is an essential ingredient in this strategy, but it can only take you so far. When the tide of viral criticism, is both toxic and overwhelming, it can seem rational either to give up on nuance or withdraw. What does it take to stand your ground and fight for complex and difficult ideas? Ben Passmore closes out this season of The Truth in This Art.Ben Passmore (DAYGLOAYHOLE, Your Black Friend, Sports Is Hell, BTTM FDRS; contributor to The Nib) joins Rob Lee to discuss his new book, Black Arms to Hold You Up.An Ignatz and Eisner Award-winning cartoonist whose work ranges from the fantastical to the autobiographical, Passmore brings sharp, often humorous social commentary on politics, activism, white supremacy, sports, and the Black American experience. In this episode, Passmore shares the story behind Black Arms to Hold You Up—why he chose graphic nonfiction, how he approached making it, and the care required when drawing real people and histories. He breaks down craft decisions that make complex ideas legible without flattening them, and how he balances clarity, intention, and voice. The conversation also digs into audience and context: making art in rooms where you're often the only Black person, how perception shifts outside community, and what cultural moments reveal about how we frame Black artists. It's about how comics can carry culture, memory, and critique—connecting personal storytelling to broader histories while inviting readers to keep learning.Topics Covered:Exploring intent, process, and responsibility in nonfiction comics with Black Arms to Hold You UpWorking across fantastical and autobiographical modes with social commentaryNavigating audience, context, and perception in art spacesMaking complex ideas accessible without losing nuanceMake the conversation count: buy Black Arms to Hold You Up. Passmore's new graphic nonfiction holds contradiction with care, keeps the humor respectful, and carries history without flattening it. Should Chip Zdarsky's promotional magazine, Zdarsky Comic News, win an Eisner at this weekend's San Diego Comic-Con International ceremony? We brought the question to him directly, and as you'll hear, he rejected the whole notion of a nomination extremely quickly. Zdarsky is having a ball working on his free periodical every month. He puts tremendous time, energy, and thought into each issue. Still, as far as the category of Best Comics-Related Periodical/Journalism is concerned, he wants someone else to take home the statue, and “knows” that someone else will take home the statue. We shall see the results very soon. Zdarsky Comic News began as a lark, as most things with Chip Zdarsky do. He turned his back on social media, adamantly believing it served no positive purpose, especially when it came to promoting his comics. Zdarksy Comic News' primary mission was to inform folks in comic shops about what he was working on and give them a little chuckle in the process. Since the first issue, however, Zdarsky Comic News has become its own unique monster. The cartoonist is slowly building a staff around himself, and it's time to decide whether or not to kill the beast or let it grow into something larger and more significant. Through advertising, Zdarsky Comic News pays for itself, but it might need a little more to become the next Comics Journal, or its evil stepbrother. Shortly before the 2025 Eisner Awards, we spoke with Chip Zdarsky about his free pamphlet, and that's all we talked about, which seemed to surprise him. If you want more Captain America talk or Public Domain conversation, you'll have to go somewhere else. We were only interested in Chip Zdarsky's mad side-hustle and what he thinks about the current state of comic book journalism. You can find Zdarsky Comic News at your local comic book shop, and you should also consider subscribing to Chip Zdarsky's Substack.
