Today, we welcome legendary alternative comics creator Evan Dorkin for a wild and woolly interview that (sometimes) explores his unique career and projects. He shares his origin story of discovering comics as a kid growing up in Brooklyn and Staten Island, working at comic retailer Jim Hanley's store during high school, and his transition from wanting to study animation at the School of Visual Arts to focusing on comics at NYU. We jump into his cult classics Milk and Cheese and Dork (from Slave Labor Graphics), discussing the independent comics scene in the late '80s and early '90s and how he developed his unique brand of anarchic humor that both celebrates and satirizes fandom. Evan opens up about his most beloved and infamous creation, The Eltingville Club, which earned him multiple Eisner Awards for its brutal takedown of toxic fan culture. We touch on his work writing for animation including Space Ghost Coast to Coast and Superman: The Animated Series (where he and wife Sarah Dyer created the character Livewire), his irreverent Superman and Batman: World's Funnest one-shot, and his multiple Eisner Award-winning collaboration with Jill Thompson on Beasts of Burden. We even get into his satirical superhero character Fight-Man, why this is the greatest time to be a geek, and why we all still complain so much! You can find and follow Evan all over social media, including Instagram, Bluesky, Tumblr and more: @evandorkin. Coming later this year, American Caper is a crime fiction series from the Head Writer & Creative Director behind the incredible popular and immersive worlds of the Grand Theft Auto Franchise, Dan Houser. Presented by Dark Horse Comics, Houser along with Eisner-Award winning artist David Lapham with finishes by Chris Anderson and colored by the extremely talented Lee Loughridge, the series is being produced by Grand Theft Auto veteran Lazlow who is contribution additional writing as well. Planned for 12 issues with the first being released on November 12th, Jace sat down with David and Lazlow at this year's San Deigo Comic Con, where American Caper had a big presence at the Dark Horse booth, and spoke to the two creators about the series, what fans can expect and how comics can reflect real-life while allowing an enormous amount of creative freedom. Listen in to the interview and don't forget to pre-order a copy of issue #1 before October 15th.
Today's episode is a first for the show—we're joined by an Oscar nominee! Michael Grover, also a Harvey and Eisner Award nominee, sits down to talk about his genre-defying webcomic Deeply Dave, which is being collected into a vertical format graphic novel with Henry Holt. As a longtime fan, I was eager to learn how he's adapting such a multimedia-rich experience—complete with GIFs, music, and animation—into print form. We also dive into his upcoming project Jake Spooky and the Wolves Within Him, where, you guessed it, werewolves take center stage. I can't help myself with the werewolf projects. Michael's work pushes the boundaries of what comics can be, and if you're interested in the future of storytelling, you won't want to miss this conversation.

Should Chip Zdarsky's promotional magazine, Zdarsky Comic News, win an Eisner at this weekend's San Diego Comic-Con International ceremony? We brought the question to him directly, and as you'll hear, he rejected the whole notion of a nomination extremely quickly. Zdarsky is having a ball working on his free periodical every month. He puts tremendous time, energy, and thought into each issue. Still, as far as the category of Best Comics-Related Periodical/Journalism is concerned, he wants someone else to take home the statue, and “knows” that someone else will take home the statue. We shall see the results very soon. Zdarsky Comic News began as a lark, as most things with Chip Zdarsky do. He turned his back on social media, adamantly believing it served no positive purpose, especially when it came to promoting his comics. Zdarksy Comic News' primary mission was to inform folks in comic shops about what he was working on and give them a little chuckle in the process. Since the first issue, however, Zdarsky Comic News has become its own unique monster. The cartoonist is slowly building a staff around himself, and it's time to decide whether or not to kill the beast or let it grow into something larger and more significant. Through advertising, Zdarsky Comic News pays for itself, but it might need a little more to become the next Comics Journal, or its evil stepbrother. Shortly before the 2025 Eisner Awards, we spoke with Chip Zdarsky about his free pamphlet, and that's all we talked about, which seemed to surprise him. If you want more Captain America talk or Public Domain conversation, you'll have to go somewhere else. We were only interested in Chip Zdarsky's mad side-hustle and what he thinks about the current state of comic book journalism. You can find Zdarsky Comic News at your local comic book shop, and you should also consider subscribing to Chip Zdarsky's Substack. I immensely enjoy the serendipity that can happen on our show. Right after the 2025 Eisner Award nominations were released, I threw a post out on BlueSky highlighting the folks we'd talked to over the last year that had been selected for nomination. It was through that unlikely path that I met one of the unsung indy comics heroes who has been cranking out original autobiographical comics for two decades now, Jonathan Baylis. From his early days interning at Marvel and Valiant to working with the Topps trading card company, through his book So Buttons Jonathan has chronicled his life through his comics for over 20 years. It is a humorous behind the scenes documentary of everyday life and it's one of the most interesting comics journey's I've ever heard on the show. “So Buttons is who I am—on the page and in real life.” We snuck this in right before San Diego Comic Con so fingers crossed he gets to bring an award home. So Buttons website Jonathan on BlueSky So Buttons #14 : Life and Death In Jonathan's words With my life, it's full of coincidences and brushes with celebrities and comix folk since I've been in entertainment and comics for my whole career. But I was hoping for something a little more high stakes this issue. Don't ask for high stakes, because you just might get it. My comic book dealer of 40 years passed away. And then… my mom. That's this comic. In the tradition of Harvey Pekar's American Splendor, Baylis matches his stories with groundbreaking artists to capture down-to-earth slices of everyday life and pop culture. About Dean Hale Dean Hale is the New York Times bestselling co-author of over 20 books for young readers, including Eisner Award-nominee Rapunzel's Revenge, popular early chapter book series The Princess in Black, two graphic novels about young Wonder Woman, and two novels about the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. I have been looking forward to getting Patrick Horvath on the show for some time now and no better way to do it than to chat about his new IDW Dark project that builds on his break out success Beneath The Trees Where Nobody Sees. It's back with the next installment called Rite Of Spring which is a significant departure from the original but fear not, or maybe you should, our beloved murder bear Samantha is back. I think Patrick and I are long lost relatives because it's rare that I get to make a connection with someone on the relative merits of using Diet Coke to remove flesh from bone. We get into that, how he's avoiding the sophmore comics slump, how a decade's passing effects the people of the world, Sam's new nemesis Monica, and much more. This was one of the funnest and funniest, if dark, episodes I've recorded in some time. Patrick's website Patrick's newsletter Byron's shout out: Bakelite by Julie Gautier Beneath The Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite Of Spring from IDW Dark From the publisher The six-issue return of the Eisner-nominated cozy horror smash hit! It's been eight long years since a bloodlusting brown bear drove into the city, kidnapped a kind young duck, dissected his body, and buried the pieces in the woods. The duck's family painstakingly sought justice... but this brown bear was smart... she covered her tracks... and in the '80s, there simply wasn't a way for the duck's family to find answers. But it's not the '80s anymore. Almost a decade after cuddly brown bear Samantha Strong solidified herself as the sole serial killer in Woodbrook, the world is entering a new era. As Samantha will soon find out, there are no secrets in the age of the internet. And those who lost loved ones to her massacre haven't given up the flame of justice. A reckoning is coming to Woodbrook. Join visionary writer and artist Patrick Horvath for one of the most anticipated comics of 2025. Free For All from Oni Press From the publisher From Eisner Award-nominated writer/artist Patrick Horvath (Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees) comes a 56-page, self-contained one-shot that delivers a brutal new vision of capitalism by combat . . . In the future, the World Finance League exists to benefit all, randomly choosing those from among the billionaires and trillionaires of the world and presenting them with a choice: either donate half of their assets to the common good-or defend them in ritual combat. Reigning champion and real estate magnate Ted Brooks has 22 victories under his belt-defending the wealth he schemed and stabbed to get-when he is forced to face his ex-wife, Luella Dominguez, in a fight to the death. Luella has been training, waiting for this moment. But will she have what it takes to defeat the man who would do anything-absolutely anything-to keep his fortune? Born in Columbus, OH, Kelly Sue moved around a lot as a child and eventually got into comics professionally through adapting translations of manga. In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery speaks with Kay Sohini about her graphic memoir, This Beautiful, Ridiculous City: A Graphic Memoir (published by Ten Speed Graphic, 2025). A vibrant graphic memoir of a woman—an immigrant, a survivor, a writer, a foodie, and, ultimately, an optimist—who rebuilds her life in New York City while recovering from the trauma of an abusive relationship. “An intimate portrait of the city not only as a place of dreams, but as a vital source for healing and self-discovery.”—Nick Sousanis, Eisner Award–winning author of Unflattening On her first night in New York City, Kay Sohini sits on the tarmac of JFK Airport making an inventory of everything she's left behind in India: her family, friends, home, and gaslighting ex-boyfriend. In the wake of that untethering she realizes two things: she's finally made it to the city of her literary heroes—Kerouac, Plath, Bechdel—and the trauma she's endured has created gaping holes in her memory. As Kay begins the work of piecing herself back together she discovers the deep sense of belonging that can only be found on the streets of New York City. In the process she falls beautifully, ridiculously in love with the bustling landscape, and realizes that the places we love do not always love us back but can still somehow save us in weird, unexpected ways. At once heartbreaking and uplifting, This Beautiful, Ridiculous City explores the relationship between trauma and truth, displacement and belonging, and what it means to forge a life of one's own. About Kay Sohini: Kay Sohini is a South Asian researcher, writer, and graphic novelist based in New York. She holds a PhD in English from Stony Brook University and her essays and comics have been featured in The Washington Post, The Nib, and more. Her work focuses on utilizing comics in the scholarly examination of healthcare justice, environmental humanities, resisting disinformation, and creating an equitable future for all.
