On this week's AIPT Comics Podcast, we're joined by writer Rob Williams to talk all about Hidden Springs, his wild new series that blends retired Hollywood legends, a baby kaiju, and a desperate race against the military. It's a fun, heartfelt conversation about building flawed characters, mixing comedy with tragedy, and why stories about second chances hit harder when everything's on the line. Visit our Patreon page to see the various tiers you can sign up for today to get in on the ground floor of AIPT Patreon. We hope to see you chatting with us on our Discord soon! Hidden Springs has such a wonderfully strange premise: retired Hollywood legends protecting a baby kaiju. Where did the initial spark for this story come from, and when did you realize this was the right mix of heart, comedy, and monster chaos? 2. The cast of characters is incredibly eclectic, from a rocker reminiscent of Ozzy Osbourne to a classic Hollywood beauty, a trailblazing female director, a stand-up comedian, and a career TV star. How did you approach building such different personalities and making them feel like a believable found family? 3. Nil Vendrell Pallach is handling the art. What did Nil bring to the project visually that made them the perfect collaborator for a story that moves between comedy, nostalgia, and kaiju action? 4. There's something inherently funny about ageing celebrities being the only ones capable of protecting a world-ending monster. What interested you about pairing the idea of aging, fading fame, and second chances with something as huge and destructive as a kaiju? 5. With all these Hollywood types, I was reminded of Caccoon, about a group of old folks who encounter an alien eggs that give them youth, with your new series on the way do you think this the old person encountering sci-fi elements is an underused corner of fiction? 6. What made dark horse the right publisher for this? 7. You've written everything from Judge Dredd to Petrol Head. Where does Hidden Springs sit for you creatively? Does it tap into a different storytelling muscle compared to your other work? 8. (Fun question) Your heroes include a rocker, a comedian, a movie star, and a legendary beauty escorting a baby kaiju across the countryside. If you had to add one more retired celebrity archetype to the team, who would it be and what ridiculous skill would they bring to the kaiju babysitting mission?

This week's spotlight interview is with Timmy Heague, co-writer of Lost Fantasy #9, and is especially revealing, not just because of the wild hooks (Nazi dinosaurs, bazooka swords, monster hunting), but because of the unique vantage point he brings as both a writer and a longtime comic shop owner. That dual perspective shapes everything, from how he thinks about audience expectations to how stories are built to connect on the shelf. This interview goes far beyond Lost Fantasy #9. Timmy Heague digs into his unlikely path from comic shop owner to working writer, how collaborations with Curt Pires and Franklin Jonas actually function behind the scenes, and why being on the retail front lines gives him a sharper read on what fans want than most creators. You'll also hear about the realities of breaking in, the push and pull of co-writing, and the mentors who helped shape his voice. It's part origin story, part industry insight, and a candid look at how comics really come together. Dave: Black Cat #9 (Variant by Kris Anka) Chris: Iron Man #4 (Ryan Stegman-Frank Martin Main Cover) Interview: Timmy Heague on Lost Fantasy #9, mixing craft, collaboration, and story teases: You're stepping into Lost Fantasy #9 during a moment where Henry is already physically and emotionally battered. What interested you most about picking up his story at this breaking point? You're working with Eamon Winkle on the Bombshell story. What makes Bombshell a compelling lens into this world, and how does her story complement or contrast Henry's? You're co-writing this issue with Curt Pires and Franklin Jonas, while also contributing to a backup that ties into Fireborn. How did you all divide the storytelling responsibilities, and what did that collaboration look like on the page? You've recently come off co-writing Archie vs. Minor Threats with Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum, which thrives on tonal contrast. Did that experience influence how you approach tone here, especially with the mix of action, sci-fi, and character work? The solicit teases Henry being pulled into a new case while still recovering. How do you balance forward momentum with giving weight to his injuries and trauma? The issue introduces the “Cyber-Ronin,” which is an instantly striking concept. What was the creative spark behind that character, and how does he challenge the world of hunters in a new way? Lost Fantasy blends genres in a big way, from cyberpunk elements to mythic hunting lore. When you're writing in that kind of sandbox, how do you keep the story grounded and emotionally clear? Fun one: if you had to drop Bombshell into another comic universe for a one-shot, where would you send them and why?

On this week's AIPT Comics Podcast, we're joined by Matthew Rosenberg to talk about one of the most ambitious creator-owned books on the horizon: If Destruction Be Our Lot. For a story about the end of humanity, this one is surprisingly full of life. We dig into how the series came together, from its strange and instantly compelling premise of a robotic Abraham Lincoln wandering a post-human world, to the deeper themes driving it. Rosenberg opens up about how the book grew out of his own creative evolution, how it responds to the current moment for artists, and why this isn't a bleak dystopia so much as a story about connection, purpose, and trying to find meaning when the system no longer makes sense. We also get into the craft behind it all, including the long development process, the collaboration with his brother Mark Elijah Rosenberg, and why artist Andy Macdonald might be doing some of the most exciting work in comics right now. Of course, we also talk Spawn and what it means to step into that world, but the heart of this conversation is If Destruction Be Our Lot and why it might be Rosenberg's most personal and layered work yet. Steve Orlando is one of the busiest writers in comics right now, and this week on the AIPT Comics Podcast, we're running our full, uncut conversation with him. Earlier this week, we published a written feature focused on his Scarlet Witch run, but this episode expands far beyond that, covering everything from Deadweight with Bobby Lee to Valiant Beyond: X-O Manowar, DC x AEW, his chance to judge on Dragula Titans season 2, Tarzan Beyond, X-Men Infinity, and even a teased return to Midnighter! Dave: The Amazing Spider-Man #23 (Taurin Clarke Cover) Or Maybe Alex: X-Men #26 (Gurihiru Marvel Monster Variant) Interview: Steve Orlando Deadweight (GUNGNIR Publishing) (with Bobby Lee & Matthew Medney) Deadweight sounds completely unhinged in the best way, blending martial arts chaos, horror, and absurdist comedy. When you're co-writing something that springs so directly from Bobby Lee's comedic voice, how do you balance honoring that raw unpredictability while still building a story with emotional stakes and structure? Valiant Beyond: X-O Manowar (out Feb 18) In Valiant Beyond: X-O Manowar, Aric joins the PunX after millennia of isolation, and suddenly honor is tied to community rather than conquest. How has it been carving out your own corner of the Valiant universe? Good Bones Good Bones gathers your horror work into a single anthology, and many of the stories explore queer identity through transformation, secrecy, and bodily autonomy. When you write horror rooted in identity, are you consciously using the genre as metaphor, or does that symbolism emerge naturally through character? Dragula (with Todd McFarlane) You co-judged Dragula alongside Todd McFarlane, which feels like a collision of comics horror and performance art. Did that experience teach you anything about spectacle and theatricality, or inspire you when you're comics work? DC AEW DC and AEW both thrive on spectacle, but they also rely heavily on character-driven drama and long-term storytelling. When writing DC x AEW #1, how did you balance the over-the-top, live-event energy with making sure the character pairings felt emotionally and thematically right, rather than just fun visual mashups? Scarlet Witch Can you talk about or tease the status of Wanda and Vision's relationship as of now? Agatha Harkness is your main antagonist in Sorcerer Supreme, what makes her fun to write? Agatha is the Vishanti's chosen sorcerer supreme, I was curious if you're drawing from any personal life experience having someone be picked over you when writing this story arc? Your run on Scarlet Witch has been released via miniseries, are there advantages (and disadvantages) to this format? Wanda Maximoff has worn a lot of labels over the years—Avenger, sorceress, reality shaper, occasional cosmic wildcard. How do you personally view her place in that ecosystem? Additional General Questions Your bibliography moves fluidly between superhero epics, indie horror, licensed work, and now chaotic comedy with Deadweight. How do you recalibrate your voice between projects without losing what makes a story feel unmistakably yours?
Bob and Matt finish up their run through the work of Al Ewing.

Bob and Matt continue their discussion of Al Ewing's Ultimates.
The latest DC Spotlight episode for the week of February 4, 2026 features Jace and Rocky breaking down a strong slate of eleven new DC releases while reflecting on a rare week free of industry-wide bad news. The discussion is led by the return of The Nice House by the Sea #7, with James Tynion IV and Álvaro Martínez Bueno resuming the series after a long hiatus and using character guides and carefully integrated recap to maintain narrative momentum, followed by Batman: Static Beyond #3, which gains traction as Miguel Mendonça's art and a more action-driven focus push the Elseworlds concept forward. Batgirl #16 marks a turning point in Cassandra Cain's arc, delivering resolution to the Unburied storyline, expanding the Lazarus mythology, and setting up a return to Gotham, while DC KO: Night Fight #4 closes its mini-series by exploring Batman's exile from the tournament, alternate futures, and the consequences of loss before re-inserting him into the larger DC KO event. The episode also covers Batman #6, emphasizing character fallout and the status shift for Tim Drake, Poison Ivy #41, which advances Pamela Isley's path toward running for mayor through a jail-cell-centered narrative that keeps her agency intact, and DC KO: Boss Battle #1, a crossover-heavy one-shot pairing DC characters with external properties in a high-concept escalation of the tournament. Additional discussion includes JSA #16 continuing its Year One focus on early team dynamics, Absolute Green Lantern #11 deepening Al Ewing's dense mythology with escalating threats and spectrum lore, Absolute Superman #16 introducing an Absolute Hawkman origin while advancing Lex Luthor and Brainiac plot threads, and Superman: Chains of Love Special #1, a Creeper- and Livewire-focused story that rounds out the week, before the hosts rank their favorites and preview the looming impact of DC KO #4.

White - Venom Unleashed #15 uncut!Let's dig into our two poll questions. The first was:Jordan hinted that one moment in Death Spiral has been locked in since the very beginning of planning the event. What are you most excited to see when that moment arrives?A whopping 40% said they'd like to see a major MJ's symbiote relationship (30.8% said a big Eddie vs. Carnage throwdown). Given how strongly readers responded to the idea of Mary Jane's symbiote journey, what was it about pairing MJ with a symbiote that felt essential to Death Spiral, and how early did that relationship start shaping the story?AIPT: For the second poll, we asked:Jordan suggests MJ might be shifting from “anti-hero” to something else entirely. What do YOU think her 2026 role will look like?Over 50% of the answers said they want something they haven't even guessed yet (second place was a full street-level hero arc with 32%). Might they be on the right track? AIPT: Venom #253 is out now (January 7th), and with it's a whole new ballgame with AIM. Madame Masque is a character not often used, at least in the last decade. Might you have a favorite story she's kicked butt in?AIPT: And for our monthly gotcha question: What's a better TV show, Buddies or Friends?Onto fan questions:Spencer asks: What can you tell us about Torment? One more about Torment from Patrick: Was the name of Death Spiral's villain, Torment, inspired by the Todd McFarlane story, or is it a coincidence that the name has a history with Spider-Man?Ol' Monster-Face asks: Last time you got asked about taking the story in a space opera direction… What about a Wild West theme? "Death Spiral" does look like it could set up a classic "The Good The Bad And The Ugly" standoff…Barrett asks: With two big Spider / Symbiote events coming up very soon will the main ASM book and Venom books both be tie-ins for the foreseeable future?Anonomous asks: Will Dylan and Sleeper be an important role in Death Spiral? They are related to both Eddie and the Venom symbiote after all.Murphy asks: Did you look at any prior stories when writing the Rick Jones and Toxin bond? It reminds me of the relationship he had with Genis, especially when he went off the rails.Garlador asks: As a repository of host memories, Venom is uniquely aware of many characters current conflicted feelings - Peter, MJ, Eddie, Dylan, Flash, etc. That's been an off-limits locked box issue with MJ, but can we expect to see Venom share more of prior hosts' buried feelings with her soon, or is that too messy for now?RadiantBlue asks: Which Venom host is your favorite?Midnighter82 asks: Symbie, Spider-Man's symbiote companion in his galactic adventure, is he bound to a host or not? Jimmy has a food and calories question: So, what is it like for Mary Jane in her daily life? The symbiote probably weighs at least twice her weight and leaves a bunch of goop all over after fights, so presumably that would be lots more food than she would be used to having.Anonomous asks: Its kinda frustrating seeing VENOM everywhere and no Carnage. If you could would you tackle a carnageverse? Besides the Anne Lethal Protector universe, are there worlds where carnage is an anti-hero? Jeduwin asks: As a fan of Eventuality, how much is it kept in mind when you're writing Eddie Brock? Its existence seems like it shifts where Eddie's stories are headed, since all roads lead to the King in Black.Another Flash question from Symbiobro: In All-New Venom #10, we got to see a deep dive into both MJ's and the symbiotes relationship with Eddie, but Flash Thompson also played a big role in both these people's lives. Can we expect a similar delve into how he helped shape the symbiote into what it is today?

Our tour of DC's Absolute Universe continues with Absolute Superman Vol. 1: Last Dust of Krypton by Jason Aaron and Rafa SandovalBut first, who can we blame for one of our least favorite interviews? Is Rodney Barnes returning to the podcast? Why does Rodney like Cody so much? Is Anthony blowing up in the comic book world? How would we rank the first 3 Absolute series? Is this a fresh take on Superman? How was Superman's lore changed for this series? Is Clark Kent not an element in this story? Is this Superman anti-AI? Does a big part of this volume take place on Krypton? Is this a Superman for the working class people? Does this section of the Absolute universe reflect our own world more than the others? Are the Peacemakers equivalent to ICE? Could new readers easily jump into the Absolute Universe? How does it also appeal to legacy readers? How do Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen compare to their original versions? What role does Ras al Ghul play in this comic? Should villains for one hero cross over to other heroes? Who is Absolute Lieutenant Dan? Does the Absolute Univefsr feel cyberpunk? Who is Omega Prime? What Absolute series that hasn't been announced yet would we like to see? What is Absolute Evil? What is Captain Cold's eyewear possibly made out of? What makes Absolute Gorilla Grodd so different? What's going on in Absolute Green Lantern by Al Ewing? Do we need to do more Earth One episodes? Why is Marvel already ending the Ultimate Universe? Are we torn between Marvel and DC? Have we covered Batman more than anything else on the pod? Will there be no more Chronic in 2026 or ABSOLUTE CHRONIC? Who is Satan busy torturing? What is the trap door theory? And we play fuck, marry, kill with the Absolute Trinity!
