Apple TV+ is first to market in this month's battle of the brand-new streaming services, and Slate's TV critic Willa Paskin is joining us to talk about it -- starting with its fanciest new series, The Morning Show, but also touching on See, For All Mankind, and Dickinson. Sarah stars in an abbreviated Around The Dial to talk about the season finale of The Great British Bake Off. Then it's on to a discussion of whether American Vandal S01.E05, "Premature Theories," should be inducted into The Canon. After naming the week's Winner and Loser, it's on to the return of a Game Time classic. Grab your coffee and Red Bull and listen! In podcasting terms, that makes us positively Methuselahian. Since the start of EHG, our listeners have asked if we had a tip jar or donation system and we'd look at each other and say surely that is a joke, people don't pay other people to do podcasts. We'd email them back "Ha ha ha, good one, Chet" and go about our business. Now we are told this is a real thing that real nice people do. Value for value? In today's topsy turvy world? It's madness but that good kind of madness, like when you wake up a 3:15am and clean your house. Or something. In all seriousness, we are humbled by your continued prodding to get a Patreon page up for EHG and here it is! Extra Hot Great on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Decoder Ring's a new monthly podcast hosted by Slate's TV critic Willa Paskin that tries to crack all kinds of cultural mysteries. So far, it's deciphered clowns and when and why they got so scary, and also unpicked a fan theory about the BBC TV series 'Sherlock' and a possible homosexual relationship between Holmes and Watson. This episode, called 'The Laff Box' looks at the history of the laugh track, the canned laughter you'll have heard on many TV comedy shows that was once a big thing but has now fallen out of favour.
