What comes to mind when you think of the phrase “flamed-grilled” burgers, or even to “have it your way”? For over seven decades, Burger King built its identity around its freshly flame-grilled burgers and the iconic Whopper. But behind that familiar bite, is a giant food empire altogether. The brand is part of Restaurant Brands International, a company formed in 2014 following the merger of Burger King and coffee chain Tim Hortons. Today, the Toronto headquartered company owns four of the world’s most prominent fast food chains, namely Burger King, Tim Hortons, Popeyes and Firehouse Subs. It is more notably one of the world’s largest quick service restaurant companies with nearly US$49 billion in annual system-wide sales generated across over 33,000 restaurants in more than 120 countries and territories. Restaurant Brands International is a company to look at not just because of the sheer scale of its operations, but also because of its recent efforts to rejuvenate APAC business in the past three years. In late October 2022, Restaurant Brands International’s subsidiary PLK Apac appointed Fei Siong Group to run the Popeyes fried chicken chain in Singapore after working with Malaysian restaurant operator Revenue Valley for over a decade. The firm also launched the Popeye’s brand in Indonesia and South Korea that same year, and announced a nationwide expansion in China the following year. Then came the year 2023, where its coffee brand Tim Hortons entered the Singapore market, and made a plan to open over 150 outlets in South Korea in five years. But perhaps what’s even more exciting was a move by Restaurant Brands International to buy Burger King China back from Turkish restaurant franchise operator TFI and global private equity firm Cartesian in 2025. Later that year, the company announced a joint venture with Chinese alternative asset manager CPE to reimagine the next phase of growth for Burger King, with the aim to expand the burger chain’s footprint from roughly 1,250 outlets to over 4,000 by 2035. So why is the firm aggressively expanding in Asia right now? Rund 60 deutschsprachige Filme, viele bekannte Schauspieler, spannende Premieren und jede Menge Gespräche mit den Menschen hinter der Kamera stehen auf dem Programm. Zwei Tatort-Stars in Biberach: Adele Neuhauser und Maria Furtwängler Gleich zwei bekannte Tatort-Gesichter stehen in diesem Jahr im Mittelpunkt. Die österreichische Schauspielerin Adele Neuhauser, bekannt als Ermittlerin Bibi Fellner aus dem Wiener Tatort, wird mit dem Ehrenbiber ausgezeichnet. Schon 2024 begeisterte sie das Biberacher Publikum mit ihrem Film „Ungeschminkt“, der damals den Publikumspreis gewann. Auch Maria Furtwängler, die Millionen Fernsehzuschauer als Hannoveraner Tatort-Kommissarin Charlotte Lindholm kennen, wird in Biberach erwartet. Gemeinsam mit Adele Neuhauser ist sie im Fernsehfilm „Glückspilze isst man nicht“ zu sehen. Neuhauser ist außerdem in „Wenn das Licht gefriert“ und im Rahmen eines Specials in „Überleben in Brandenburg“ auf der Leinwand vertreten. Weitere angekündigte Gäste sind unter anderem Philipp Hochmair, Petra Schmidt-Schaller, Henriette Confurius und Andreas Pietschmann. Rund 60 Filme und eine Weltpremiere Los geht es am Mittwoch, 28. Oktober, um 19.30 Uhr in der Stadthalle Biberach. Eröffnungsfilm ist die Komödie „Lieblingsmenschen“ von Helena Hufnagel. Darin treffen eine 101-jährige Frau und ein 31-jähriger Geflüchteter aufeinander und gründen eine ziemlich ungewöhnliche Wohngemeinschaft. In den Hauptrollen sind Katharina Thalbach und Bardo Böhlefeld zu sehen. Auch Krimifans kommen auf ihre Kosten. Neben dem „Tatort – Zwischenwelten“ feiert der Fernsehfilm „Der Geier – Blut und Zweifel“ mit Philipp Hochmair seine Weltpremiere in Biberach. Dazu kommen zahlreiche Dokumentarfilme, sechs Debütfilme, sechs mittellange Filme und insgesamt 26 Kurzfilme, die in vier Blöcken gezeigt werden. Hauptspielort ist wieder das Cineplex-Kino in der Biberacher Innenstadt. Geschichten von Familie, Vergangenheit und Neuanfang Ein Schwerpunkt des diesjährigen Programms sind Geschichten über Familiengeheimnisse, persönliche Krisen und Neuanfänge. Dazu gehört auch „Frieda – Kalter Krieg“ von Autor und Regisseur Felix Hassenfratz mit Julia Jentsch in einer der Hauptrollen. Die bekannte Schauspielerin feierte mit „Sophie Scholl – Die letzten Tage“ ihren internationalen Durchbruch und spielte unter anderem im Kinohit „Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei“ und in der erfolgreichen Krimiserie „Der Pass“. „Frieda“ erzählt von einem Mädchen, das 1984 in der süddeutschen Provinz mit einem verdrängten Familiengeheimnis konfrontiert wird. Für Regisseur Felix Hassenfratz ist es eine Rückkehr an einen vertrauten Ort: Bereits 2018 gewann er mit seinem Kinodebüt „Verlorene“ den Debüt-Biber. Ein Jahr später saß er selbst in der Biberacher Jury. Auch „Eurotrash“ von Frauke Finsterwalder beschäftigt sich mit einer schwierigen Familiengeschichte. In der Verfilmung des Romans von Christian Kracht begibt sich ein Schriftsteller gemeinsam mit seiner todkranken Mutter auf einen ebenso absurden wie schmerzhaften Roadtrip durch die Schweiz. Nachwuchstag, Tickets und große Abschlussgala Schon vor dem offiziellen Festivalstart gibt es am Sonntag, 25. Oktober, einen Nachwuchstag. Wer selbst einmal vor oder hinter der Kamera arbeiten möchte, bekommt bei Workshops zu Schauspiel, Kamera, Schnitt und Drehbuch Einblicke in die Filmbranche. Auch das Rahmenprogramm wird erweitert. Geplant sind unter anderem Gespräche über Drehbücher, Casting und unabhängige Filmproduktionen. Natürlich darf auch die Filmfestparty am Freitagabend im Hotel Kapuzinerhof nicht fehlen.
